The Empowered Feminine With Ciara Foy
Is It Hormones or Your Nervous System That Are Causing Perimenopause Chaos?

What if I told you that the question itself – hormones or nervous system – is missing the point entirely? A recent post by Dr. Bradley Campbell sparked something in me that I had to address, because it touches on one of the most important conversations we're not having about perimenopause. The conversation about how everything in your body is interconnected, and why the either/or approach to women's health is keeping us stuck. If you're navigating perimenopause and feeling like you're caught between conflicting advice – hormone therapy versus lifestyle changes, medical intervention versus natural approaches, your symptoms being "all in your head" versus them being completely out of your control – this episode will help you find your way through the noise. I'm sharing my clinical experience working with hundreds of women, my own personal journey with hormonal shifts, and what I've learned about the delicate dance between our hormones, nervous system, and the choices we make every single day. What we'll explore together: Dr. Bradley Campbell's Post (01:11) The controversial perspective that started this conversation and why it matters for every woman in perimenopause Clinical Experience (02:22) What I've witnessed in practice – the real stories of women whose lives transformed when we addressed the whole picture, not just isolated symptoms Empowerment and Responsibility (05:02) The difference between taking responsibility for your health and being blamed for your symptoms – and why this distinction changes everything Truth Behind Hormonal Symptoms (06:50) Your body is always giving you signals – what your symptoms are actually telling you and why dismissing them (or over-medicalizing them) both miss the mark Personal Resilience and Lifestyle Choices (17:18) How building resilience isn't about perfection – it's about partnering with your body through sustainable, compassionate choices Stress and Women's Health (18:41) The invisible load that's wreaking havoc on your hormones and why addressing stress isn't just about bubble baths and meditation Hormone Therapy vs. Lifestyle Management (32:40) Why this isn't an either/or conversation – it's about finding what works for YOUR unique body and circumstances Here's what I want you to know: It's all connected. Your hormones don't exist in isolation from your nervous system, your stress levels, your sleep, your relationships, or your daily choices. And neither do you. You deserve more than being caught between extremes. You deserve nuanced, compassionate care that sees all of you – and that starts with understanding how beautifully complex your body truly is. Ready to dive deeper into your own hormone and nervous system connection? Visit Ciarafoy.com or connect with me on Instagram @ciarafoyinc – I'm here to support your journey toward feeling empowered by your body, not defeated by it. Don't forget to leave a rate & review if this resonates – it helps other women find these conversations when they need them most.

In this episode, Naim Alkhouri, Mike Betel, Michelle Long and Jeff McIntyre join Jörn Schattenberg and Roger Green to look back at The Liver Meeting 2024. This conversation reviews two sessions promoting healthy livers and asks panelists what they anticipate for #TLM2025. This last conversation starts with Jeff describing the session that moved him most and praising a panel that Mike co-chaired on Lifestyle Management of MASLD and MASH. Jeff spoke on this panel, and he describes the breadth and quality of speakers and topics. While Jeff spoke about social determinants of health, others discussed commercial, regulatory and lifestyle determinants, all intermixed with practical advice on managing patients' lifestyle issues. Finally, he comments on a presentation from Meena Bansal discussing several concurrent posters in the meeting that aligned with the discussion in the session.  After Jeff shares the content of the meeting, he comments on the large number of providers and industry executives who attended this patient-centered session. Roger notes a similar distribution of attendees at the Health Livers, Healthy Lives session on building momentum for prevention. In wrapping up the session, Roger does not share another presentation but notes how many modes of action have produced successful Phase 2/3 trial results. He notes that we may have 4-5 different modes of action available five years from now. In the rest of the session, panelists describe what they believe will be different and exciting at #TLM2025. Answers vary, but most focus on advances in drug development and/or NITs.

00:00:00 – Surf's Up: Season 5 Episode 26 - Last month, close to 8,000 hepatology stakeholders convened in San Diego for The Liver Meeting 2024. Hepatology Key Opinion Leader Naim Alkhouri, Novo Nordisk International Vice President for Medicines Michelle Long, and patient advocates Jeff McIntyre from the Global Liver Institute and Michael Betel from the Fatty Liver Alliance join Jörn Schattenberg and Roger Green to discuss highlights. 00:03:23 - Introduction and Groundbreaker - Highlights include recent travel, cultural events, and the Third Annual Primary Care Summit from the Fatty Liver Alliance.00:11:35 - Describing TLM2024 - Participants shared a word or short phrase they felt best captured their feelings about TLM2024. 00:14:51 - The ESSENCE Trial - Naim starts the session by describing ESSENCE, a Phase 3 trial of semaglutide in non-cirrhotic MASH patients, which he describes as "the most exciting news of the meeting." Panelists describe the benefits of this trial from a variety of perspectives. 00.22.49 - A Challenge to Trial Recruitment? - Roger asks the group whether the presence of two approved MASH medications that do not require biopsy will make recruiting clinical trials that require them more challenging. The group doubts this will not add a significant new challenge to already-challenging trial recruitment. 00:29:22 - Other keys in drug development - Naim begins a discussion of two topics: the value of synergy between resmetirom and the GLP-1 agonist, and the importance of different genetic polymorphisms in predicting the impact of drugs on specific patients. Michelle mentions a recent paper in Nature identifying distinct clusters of patients based on how their SLDs progress over time. Roger identifies two particular challenges in this area, one posed by Lean MASH and the other specific to Hispanics in the US. 00:34:42 - FGF 21s - Jörn highlights a paper from the later breaker session on efimosfermin alfa, an FGF-21 dosed q4w. Roger and Mike comment. To Jörn, this and other studies demonstrate the place FGF-21s are likely to have in MASH therapy.00:40:29 - FDA Corner and the Role of Surrogates - Michelle praises the FDA Corner session, particularly the agency's transparency and willingness to engage industry and academia in finding paths to move away from biopsy. She is optimistic about the scientific community coming together to address these issues. Jeff notes the pivotal role he believes patients must play in this process. 00:48:33 - Patient Insights - Mike describes a poster he presented (and was lead co-author), titled Patient Voice in MASH Initiatives:  Foundational Principles for the Conduct of Patient-Centric MASH Research. He lists the groups participating in this broad effort and the foundational principles that emerged. Michelle and Jörn share their thoughts on which principles have the greatest impact on them in clinical research. Jeff praises a panel that Mike co-chaired on Lifestyle Management of MASLD and MASH. He praises the breadth and quality of speakers and topics. He also comments on the large number of providers and industry executives who attended this patient-centered session. Roger notes a similar distribution of attendees at the Health Livers, Healthy Lives session on building momentum for prevention. 00:58:36 - Wrapping Up - Roger comments on the breadth of modes of action that have produced successful Phase 2/3 trial results. They delve into Amanda's inspiring journey from her early fascination with travel to establishing a successful luxury travel business. Amanda shares her unique approach to client service, emphasising the importance of personalised experiences and seamless journeys, which set her apart in the competitive travel industry. KEY TAKEAWAYS Minerva Private Travel emphasises a highly personalised service, focusing on the entire journey of the client, from pre-departure communication to seamless transitions at airports. The business model relies on referrals and recommendations rather than traditional advertising, which has proven to be a successful long-term strategy for building a loyal client base. Challenges such as the aftermath of 9/11 and the COVID-19 pandemic highlight the volatility of the travel industry. Adapting to these challenges, including diversifying services and maintaining a positive mindset, is crucial for survival and growth. Building a strong team and delegating tasks is essential for efficiency. Investing in the right people allows for a focus on core business activities, leading to better overall performance. "The travel industry is the most volatile industry in the world... It only takes one person to say something, and they're like, 'Oh, I'm going now, cancel.'" "The term luxury is an interesting one. I think it's overused, in my opinion." "You have to be humble in hard times... If things got bad again, I'd have to do the same. And I would be prepared to do that."   This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. In the latest episode of the Capitalist Investor podcast, hosts Derek and Luke discussed several important financial and investment-related topics that can help you make informed decisions. Here are the five hot topics discussed in this episode:1. Peloton's Financial StrugglesPeloton, once a pandemic success story, is now facing financial hardships, with bankruptcy looming over its future. Derek shared how he had invested in a Peloton bike before the company became a household name during the pandemic. Despite its current financial situation, Peloton's journey offers valuable lessons for investors—highlighting the importance of assessing long-term viability even when a company is thriving in the short term.2. Understanding Retirement Spending and the 4% RuleA significant part of the episode was dedicated to the topic of retirement spending and the safe withdrawal rate. Derek and Luke delved into the well-known 4% rule, discussing its origins and contemporary relevance. They emphasized that understanding your lifestyle and expenses in retirement is crucial for creating a sustainable financial plan. They also noted how inflationary pressures and changes in market conditions might necessitate adjustments to this rule. 3. Adjusting Return Expectations in Financial PlanningLuke brought up the changing landscape of market returns and how historical rates may no longer be applicable moving forward. He stressed the need for conservative rate of return assumptions in financial planning to better prepare for future economic conditions. Derek echoed this sentiment, cautioning against relying on flat rate assumptions that could significantly overstate one's financial success prospects.4. The Purpose of Financial Planning Beyond Wealth AccumulationThe hosts addressed a common misconception: the belief that the role of a financial advisor is primarily to maximize wealth. Instead, Derek and Luke explained that the true goal is to help clients identify their life goals and develop strategies to achieve them. They emphasized balancing risk and return to meet lifestyle needs rather than aiming for high-risk, high-reward investments that could jeopardize financial stability.5. Importance of Lifestyle Management for Younger GenerationsIn a message directed at younger listeners, Luke discussed the pitfalls of "lifestyle creep," where increasing income leads to higher spending rather than saving. He encouraged young professionals to be mindful of their spending habits and to prioritize financial freedom over material possessions. This segment served as a timely reminder that wealth isn't just about income but also about how you manage and allocate your resources. These hot topics offer valuable insights into making informed investment decisions, planning for retirement, and managing personal finances. Whether you're a seasoned investor or just starting your financial journey, these discussions provide essential knowledge to help you navigate the complex world of finance.

It's not you; it's your hormones. We spill about the ride women's hormones can take you on monthly, the impact of toxins on our bodies, and how to rock those golden years with style and grace! If you aren't feeling right, it might be time to leave those standard labs behind and seek a hormone specialist. You don't have to suffer through any stage of life with the proper support.Stacy's goal is to educate everyone about hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and help us feel like our best selves as we journey through the different stages of life. She's all about that personalized approach, using tests like urinary metabolite and saliva testing to understand our unique hormone levels and pointing out the need for a more comprehensive medical evaluation. Standard labs may put you in the healthy range, but it doesn't give you the whole picture. There may be something hiding beyond what Western Medicine is able or willing to test for. She drops some real truth bombs about environmental factors messing with our hormones and credits using non-toxic beauty products for a healthier balance. We're discussing finding the right lifestyle groove to keep those hormone levels in check and make aging feel good.Stacy's got your back if you're looking for ways to manage hormonal changes. From feeling good through hormone-related libido issues to her approach to aging confidently, this episode is packed with easy tips and wisdom to get you feeling better in no time. So, grab your favorite beverage and join Stacy and me as we chat about the phase of womanhood together! Do you wish you had someone to understand what you're going through or have been through?I fell in love with a man that had the most attractive energy I had ever met. He was attentive, sexy, strong, intelligent, enthusiastic and had a quick wit. He was the best hype guy and ready to ride at anytime. Want to get a coffee? Yes. Want to meet for a drink? Yes. You want to move? Yes. I was drawn into a relationship with someone because of his powerful energy of willingness and his ability to lock his attention onto me. The attention that I was getting from him made me feel like I could accomplish anything because he had such a strong ride and fly attitude. It dissolved the fears of post trauma, of being alone or abandoned. That's why I married someone with bipolar without knowing it. My story is from the view of the partner that has fallen in love with someone with a very serious illness and the intimate details of what we went through as the illness unfolded. Bipolar tore our life down and we had to fight to restore it, and 15 years later, I'm still telling the story. But I've been hearing your stories too, and all the people that have reached out to me over the years have lit up a passion in me to never let anyone be alone with bipolar. This is my mission and my heart's call to change the way we do a relationship with a loved one with bipolar. Connect with TempleTempleleffingwell@gmail.comInstagramFacebookAmazon / Kindle"Whoops, I Married Bipolar: An Inside Look at A Real Relationship with Mental Illness" Book / AudioBookLinksHeart Healers Brain GangMajor TransformationHealing Foundation90 Minute One on One Post Production for I Married Bipolar is done by:...

STRESS. It even sounds stressful. Today my guest, Stress and Lifestyle Management Coach Kathleen McDermott reminds us that we are not alone in our struggles during challenging times. Life is unpredictable and does not follow a set pattern. We often feel pressured to keep up a frantic pace in life, but sometimes all we need is to slow down and take time for ourselves. The culture of being constantly stressed and busy is not a badge of honor; it can lead to detrimental effects on our health and well-being. Stress affects all aspects of our body, and healing requires addressing both the mind and body. Becoming aware of our triggers and reactions is crucial to breaking free from habitual responses and finding better ways to cope.We are talking about the importance of self-care and setting boundaries and the idea of instead of seeking perfection, focus on doing things in a way that feels right for you.We explore the significance of sisterhood and the support that other women can provide. She encourages us to create a new legacy for ourselves and future generations by taking charge of our lives and seeking ways to feel better. Ultimately, the key to stress management lies in awareness, self-compassion, and choosing better ways to respond to life's challenges.Make sure to sign up for the RELATIONSHIP RESCUE SUMMIT happening the week of August 7th.  SO MANY amazing presenters to help you come back to YOU! Every day, humans make multiple choices about what to eat. Some of those decisions will be better for our health than others - but what if we allowed a machine to decide for us? In this programme, Adam Shaw explores what would happen if we let artificial intelligence (AI) design our diets and whether that might improve our health. Adam visits a laboratory in the UK to meet AI researcher Dr James Neil, from the Centre for Nutrition Education & Lifestyle Management, whose company is developing machine-learning systems to create personalised diets. He speaks to dietician Pennie McCoy, to find out how a digital therapist called ‘Hope' is learning to help Australians stay on track with their weight-loss goals. Dr Mariette Abrahams, dietician and CEO of Qina, a company in Portugal which offers strategic advice on the personalised nutritional market, tells Adam about the potential and the pitfalls of the new tools. And Dr Eric Topol, professor of molecular medicine and executive vice president of Scripps Research in the US, considers whether AI-driven diets will be used for a small group of people, or whether the technology could fundamentally change everyone's approach to food. On this episode of Build Better Brands, Danielle Clarke is joined by Anthea McCourtie about her career from full-time employment to finding her passion, to having a side hustle which eventually became her full time job as a nutritional therapist.KEY TAKEAWAYSAs a teenager I was into the dieting approach, I was very obsessed with calories and all the unhealthy attitudes that a lot of us had in the 90s. I became really interested in what food could do for us, so I did a BSc in nutritional therapy part time while I was working and finally qualified at the end of 2012. I was also doing martial arts about 14 hours a week until I had to have shoulder surgery which meant I had some free time, so I got a personal training qualification which bolted on to nutritional therapy.People are never just looking for help with their nutrition, there's factors of weight loss or fitness. Now I work with my one-to-one clients at their homes (for the initial consultation at least) so I can get a feel for how they're living and their lifestyle. If they do the transformation programmes with me, they'll be doing nutritional therapy as well as personal training and/or yoga. We work on lifestyle changes as well, it's more all-encompassing than when I first started.Becoming more of a personal brand, with You By Anthea, to incorporate the different things that I do gave me a lot more freedom because, at the end of the day, you're buying from the person. When I work with people one-to-one, they are buying into me. That allows me to put a lot more of myself into what I do than in my early days on Instagram, it was soulless and very factual. Now I post pictures of myself climbing and doing pole fitness, I don't teach those things but I feel like I can show it because I want to share what I'm about.Calorie counting is a massively flawed system, I don't use it. Calories are not the same across all foods. Half the time they're not measured correctly, especially when you've got food that's more than one ingredient, it's not possible. Calorie output is such a difficult thing to measure – even the machines at the gym or smart watches, it's wild guess work. But also, food is information: 100 Calories of almonds is going to have a completely different impact on my body than 100 calories of gummy bears! So much of it depends on our hormones, our sex hormone balance, sleep levels, cortisol levels, blood sugar levels and insulin response. The gut and the microbiome have a massive impact on how much energy is extracted from food. BEST MOMENTS‘I like to really immerse myself in things, I'm a bit of an all-or-nothing person.'‘I work a lot locally, but since the pandemic we've all figured out we can do more online than we realised before.'‘Having my name in the brand has given me a lot more scope to show myself.'‘My mission is all about empowering mainly women, though I do work with some men as well, to feel amazing about themselves, not just discovering their health, there's a massive mindset thing in there as well that will directly impact their health and their food choices.'ABOUT THE GUESTAnthea McCourtie: I am a registered Nutritional Therapist with a BSc in Nutritional Therapy from the Centre for Nutrition Education and Lifestyle Management (in partnership with Middlesex University).I am a Level 3 qualified Personal Trainer specialising in at-home and outdoor training using a range of equipment including kettlebells, suspension (TRX) equipment as well as Thai Boxing fitness.  I also have a Level 3 award in designing Pre and Post Natal Exercise Programmes and am a Master Kettlebell Instructor. I am a qualified yoga teacher, registered with Yoga Alliance Professionals and offer vinyasa, yin and ashtanga yoga classes as well as individual and partner yoga instruction.I am a full member of BANT (British Association for Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine), the CNHC (Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council) and Personal Trainer.Website: https://youbyanthea.co.uk/ Instagram: @you.by.antheaPODCAST DESCRIPTIONThe Build Better Brands podcast is to inspire small business owners and help them realise that they don't have to be Nike to have a great brand, and the sooner they start to focus on making it better, the sooner they can improve their lives and the lives of others. On the show I'll be talking to business owners that have built brands from the ground up. In that episode, we interviewed Belinda and her husband, Dr. Gary Fettke, and discussed the reasons why her husband was targeted by the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and the Tasmanian Health Service for practicing a healthy fat, low-carbohydrate diet. Belinda took the initiative to research the bio-history of religion and its influences on nutrition policies and dietary guidelines. Her research revealed a massive influence of the Seventh-day Adventist church, their tax-free, financial stake in cereal and plant-based food companies, and their impact on what we are told to eat. Belinda and Gary opened the Nutrition for Life – Diabetes and Health Research Centre, which provides nutritional care around Tasmania and Australia. She is an advocate of a Low Carbohydrate, Healthy Fat (LCHF) lifestyle for the various health benefits, including the reversal of type 2 diabetes, obesity, and other chronic diseases. This week's episode sees Victoria Fenton reunited with her colleague and friend, Alex Manos as he shares with her (and all of you!) his journey from personal illness, to becoming a Personal Trainer, into a nutrition professional and ultimately Functional Medicine practitioner - and from there into both breathwork and psychedelic facilitation training. Victoria and Alex discuss: Why psychedelics - especially psilocybin - and what Alex's experiences with The Synthesis Institute have provided him The journey towards feeling more emotion with psilocybin experiences The current movement of promotion of psychedelics and how that needs to be balanced with temperance and care, and a focus on community and integration The contrast between the Western medical approach and the indigenous, shamanistic traditions The growth of psychedelic experimentation in the UK and Europe The power of psychedelics for shifting someone into a different way of being - and the destruction and grief that can be part of that process Breathwork - its role, power, potential, and how to do this right (clue: it's not about the big emotional release) Integrating breathwork into psilocybin retreats and Alex's vision for his professional future The limitations of Functional Medicine and dependency on protocols The felt sense of safety and its fundamental role in healing, irrespective of modality Despite being one of the UK's leading Functional Medicine Practitioners (IFMCP) with a focus in gut health and mould Illness, Alex's interests further extend into physical therapy, movement, resiliency, coaching, biohacking, psychedelics, breathwork, masculinity, spirituality, and the assimilation or ancient wisdom concerning health. By analogy, one can argue that medicine is moving away from the repair model to a different model and purpose. To quote Dr. Bortz, the purpose of medicine is to assist the assurance of everyone's human potential. Now reaching your highest human potential comes down to more than your diet and exercise. With an increasing amount of people surviving into their 90's and 100's, we want to make sure our health span matches our projected lifespan. Part of a good health span includes building up your emotional and intelligence quotient, which is just as important to your overall health as your physical health. In this episode of The Healers Café, Manon Bolliger (Deregistered with 30 years of experience in health), talks with Jenna Howe, about Bowen Therapy, Osteopathy and Concussion Recovery, Healing Back pain, Sciatic and another on healing hip, knee and leg pain. For the transcript and full story go to: https://www.drmanonbolliger.com/jenna-howe   Highlights from today's episode include: Jenna Howe I might see anywhere between 20 and 25 patients a week. And a large majority of them are Bowen based, some of them are just strict Bowen, I've got two sessions this afternoon, actually, that are just strict Bowen. And everything else is a combination. But Bowen has been the foundation of, of my entire healing career. And so, I always come back to that even if it's, you know, outside of the traditional teachings, I'm still infusing it with whatever I need, at whatever time I need. It's, it's always there.   Jenna Howe I was using the protocol, the concussion recovery protocol. I'm using Bowen but having to apply it to chronic situations and figuring out the nuances with these chronic situations and differences between men and women or older people younger people, car accident versus sports injury. And a lot of it was a lot of self-education. And that's kind of how I ended up grabbing up all of these other programs and certifications along the way, is because, you know, the concussion has, there's a lot of layers to that, depending on the type of person that you're working with.   Jenna Howe 17:28 And, in the unfortunate thing is that, by the time people come to see me, they've been suffering for quite a while. And they've been told by specialists and so on, that while this is just the way it is, it's never going to change, you're just going to have to deal with it. And that doesn't help anybody. And I've always been the type of person who, I believe there's a solution to every problem. I may not have the solution personally, but there's going to be a solution somewhere, somewhere, there's going to be a way to deal with whatever is going on.   BIO JENNA HOWE: Jenna approaches her clients with compassion, sensitivity and understanding and is dedicated to finding the root cause to her clients pain and discomfort and has a passion for health and wellness along with learning and educating. Jenna has a Diploma in Fitness and Lifestyle Management, a degree in Psychology, and has several post graduate certifications including: Concussion Health, Cancer and Exercise Recovery, Certified Bowen Health Therapist, Master level Neurokinetic Therapist, Certified ANF Pain Therapist, and is a Certified Yoga Therapist and is a Manual Osteopath. Jenna has been working with concussed clientele since early 2003 and has worked with countless people from all walks of life, ages and stages to get them back into the game of life, sport, and work. Jenna is currently in private practice in Victoria, BC, offering concussion therapy concussion consulting, acute and chronic pain services as well as fitness and wellness services.
