Richard Marshall is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist living and working in Portland, OR. Out of college and no idea what to do with his life, Richard did everything from scooping ice cream, playing guitar in the NYC cult punk band Alice Donut, working a string of "comically atrocious" temp jobs, and finally 10 years as a paralegal. After an emotional reckoning in his 40's led him to seek out a new career path, Richard moved to Portland and attended grad school in pursuit of becoming a therapist. Richard talks about how addressing his own mental health challenges in therapy inspired him to want to help others; the various models and aspects of the therapeutic relationship that help clients get better; how his job differs from pop culture portrayals; and how being a therapist has helped him to better understand the true nature of the human condition.Producer: Robin LandyFollow @90000hrspod on InstagramEmail: ninetythousandhourspod@gmail.comFollow along @90000hrspodIntro: "Crossing The Line" - Eric Andrew KuhnUnderscore: "Summer," "Today I'm Not Remembering Anything" - Eric Andrew Kuhn "Part and Particle" - Silian Railhttps://silianrail.bandcamp.comSupport the show at https://www.patreon.com/90000hourspodSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/90-000-hours/donations

The obligatory introductory episode. Steve and Keith establish their bona fides as musical tastemakers (or lack there of). They summarize their years as college radio DJs, album reviewers, and interviewers of obscure bands with strange names. It's always darkest before the dawn, and while next episode's album will showcase Rush in the act of defining their legacy, this time around we're dealing with a glaring misstep that even the band doesn't like -- 1975's "Caress of Steel". This record has a misprinted cover which has been frozen in time. It also has a metric shit-ton of "hobbit-humping bullshit" in the lyrics, and contains exactly three songs (plus two very lengthy hodge-podges of half-finished ideas). Not an impressive deal, but an arrested spiel. Put on your robe and wizard hat and get ready to "rock" in a decidedly beard-stroking fashion.
