Hello, friends! So: Does Jane Austen even do happy endings? It's a very fair question! And one we've explored at the Austen Connection - and now diving deeply into this question is a fascinating new book: Jane Austen and the Price of Happiness is just out, from Hopkins Press. Professor Inger Brodey is the founding director and co-host of the marvelous conversation, dialogue, and seminar program Jane Austen & Co., and many of us here at the Austen Connection have engaged with their conversations series such as Race & the Regency, and also their seminars from the Jane Austen Summer Program. And now with this new book Dr. Brodey has produced a deep study on Jane Austen's endings: How happy are they really, and what's she doing with them? The answers are surprising: They involve token survivors, metafictions, ambiguous resolutions, and crashing the fourth wall where Austen's narrators slow down the pace of the narrative, peer behind the veil of fiction, and talk to us. The reader. If that all involves aspects of Jane Austen's stories you've never thought about before - stay tuned. Author Inger Brodey is a highly original thinker and scholar, and this conversation explores Jane Austen as not only a young woman of the Regency, and as a weaver of these classic, iconic stories we know, but also as: an Artist. This is all in the conversation we're honored to have with Inger Brodey in our latest podcast episode. You can listen here and wherever you get your podcasts - and if you prefer reading, here's a transcript of the conversation, lightly edited. Enjoy the conversation! —--You can find more discussion on this podcast episode at the Austen Connection, at austenconnection.substack.com.Links and mentions:Jane Austen & the Price of Happiness is by Inger Brodey, from Hopkins Press.More on Jane Austen & Co - Many of you here already know Dr. Inger Brodey from Jane Austen & Company's wonderful research and conversation series, or you may have engaged with the popular Jane Austen Summer Program. Also discussed in this conversation - Dr. Brodey's favorite Austen film adaptations, which are explored in her book, including: Autumn de Wilde's EMMA. 2020 film, Ang Lee's Sense and Sensibility, Amy Heckerling's Clueless (of course!), and an unexpected favorite, Pride and Prejudice: A Latter-Day Comedy, by Andrew Black. You can listen to this conversation and all our conversations at the Austen Connection podcasts right here, and wherever you get your podcasts. The late scholar Alison G. Sulloway's book is Jane Austen and the Province of Womanhood - it's a big fave here at the Austen Connection.Professor John Mullan's book is What Matters in Jane Austen.Further discussion- here are some Austen Connection archive posts on Austen's HEAs, Austen's Token Survivors, and Austen's Fleabag-style breakage of the fourth wall. Ben and Jeff had a blast talking to the incredibly talented Andrew Black (touring bassist for MIZMOR and new solo black metal project, LITHA). We begin by sharing our love of ambient music and making hypnotic sounds. Andrew is an accomplished sonic explorer who specializes in sublime tape loop manipulations, floaty minimalist piano, and dubby beats. A prolific artist of 12+ ambient albums it was fun to talk to Andy about his sound craft process. Moving freely we also dig into Andy's long trajectory as a metal guitar player growing up in the small Salem scene, his earliest band Fink and the sludgy metal goodness of Sorcerer. We spotlight Andrew's incredible new project as LITHA. Reflecting on the self-titled album on Bandcamp, Ben wrote: "An incredibly personal album that serves as therapy for the artist and listener alike. Gloriously bleak and lugubrious black metal that is at once fragile and beautiful. The contrasts are captivating. Despite the darkest of times, the sun will rise. A stunning and fearless achievement to be savored." The title of this episode is from LITHA's self-titled debut on Tarturus Records in Europe - the album was recently released on vinyl. Music from this episode includes a short tape loop from Part 4 from Andrew Black's wonderful album "Today," and we conclude with crushing "I am many" from LITHA in its entirety. So crack open your favorite brown bottle flu cure and enjoy!

A bill to introduce a digital ID is making its way through the Australian Parliament to better protect government-based identities and stem the flow of consumer data from insecure vaults. Bank-based digital identity verifications systems are already operating and international companies are, with government blessings, setting up shop in the country. But the true question will be can anyone convince sceptical Australians that this isn't the much-feared "national ID"? And will ideas like singling out First Nations people to link their Aboriginality to this ID just allow the same conservatives who tried to torch digital health records do the same with this? We interview Endava consultant and payments expert David Marsh and ConnectID managing director Andrew Black about the future design of an Australian digital identity system, why interoperability is needed for this not to be a failure, and what is required to convince Australians that this is not the Orwellian dystopia they fear. Produced by Rachel Williamson and Charis Palmer, with sound engineering by Kevin Hirshorn. Music credits to Raz Burg and BalloonPlanet.

In this episode, we speak with Andrew Black, Managing Director of ConnectID, which is part of Australian Payments Plus. Andrew, who is an expert in the convergence of IDtech and open banking, sheds light on a unique approach to building bank-backed digital identity and the user experience that it enables. It was fascinating to unpack the role governance plays in ConnectID with some tangible examples, and analyze how the UX of an identity exchange differs from that of an identity wallet. We also speculate a bit on why both true open banking and true interoperable digital identity have weaker-than-expected adoption, and how to balance solving business problems with building a future we all want to live in.To contact Andrew, you can reach out on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrew-black-a5118239/. If you don’t think of Oklahoma City as a prime culinary destination, Andrew Black would suggest that you think again. The chef and owner of Grey Sweater — a tasting menu-only restaurant where Black’s staff interviews guests as they take their reservations to plan out their meals — and the more casual Black Walnut, says he’s not the only restaurateur in the city to flex his culinary muscles for a group of well-heeled and well-traveled customers who, like Black, have come to call this city their home. Originally from Jamaica, Black got his start as a porter at The Boscobel Resort in that country, which eventually arranged for him to study abroad — to the United States where he got a degree in hotel management at Ohio State University. He then worked his way across the Caribbean and Europe and eventually ended up at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis, Tenn. He moved to Oklahoma City to work on the opening of The Skirvin Hotel in 2007 and has been there ever since. Black recently discussed his restaurants and why he believes in a great gastronomic future for his adopted home.

This episode of The Ambient Vault podcast features special guest Andrew Black. Andrew is a songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist from Portland, Oregon. Born and raised in Salem, Oregon, he learned guitar from his father as a child, fell in love with synthesizers shortly after, and has continued to make music in several metal, electronic, and ambient projects ever since. For his ambient work he finds inspiration in his home environment of the Pacific Northwest, the human condition, and his narcolepsy, which he was diagnosed with in 2009. Andrew was generous enough to share a mix of tracks for this episode and I'm so grateful for the chance to share them with you here. Phil and Jake are joined by EDT second-timer Dave Walsh (from Space Cadet, The Loved Ones & The Explosion) to rank dogs, cats and capybaras on the List of Every Damn Thing.Get Space Cadet's record “Lion On A Leash” on Wiretap Records, listen to them on Spotify, and follow them on Instagram (@space_cadet_band). And go to one of their upcoming shows! If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: We mention Dave's previous band The Explosion, which he was in with friends-and-guests-of-the-pod and guests Matt Hock and Andrew Black. But we somehow fail to mention The Loved Ones, which he was in with other friend-and-guest-of-the-pod (and other Dave) Dave Hause. We couldn't find an image of Jake's monkey-on-a-skateboard The Explosion t-shirt, but you should check out the other incredible artwork of Linas Garsys. Phil has a bestiary, which is a book about all animals, translated from Latin by T.H. White (who wrote The Sword in the Stone and a lot of other things). You can read the bestiary here. If you like dogs, Dave recommends the TV show Lucky Dog. Poochie from The Simpsons is a dog who rocks the telly. He's half Joe Camel and the third Fonzerelli. He's a kung-fu hippie from the Gangster City. He's a rapping surfer. You're the fool he pities. Here's the scene from Snatch that Jake refers to. Cats' eyes emit light rays. We don't know if this is because of science or because of magic. Probably both. The CDC's FAQ on toxoplasmosis doesn't mention attraction to cats as a symptom, but it doesn't refute it either. Jake suspects the Batman Returns version of Selena Kyle aka Catwoman has toxoplasmosis. We talk about the 1980s cartoon Heathcliff and the Catillac Cats, which Phil only ever saw the second segment of growing up, because of the scheduling. The first segment was about Heathcliff doing the kind of things he does in the newspaper comic strip. The second segment was about a group of cats who lived in a junkyard, led by Riff Raff, an orange cat who wears a big white hat. In South America, guinea pigs are frequently eaten, and are called cuy, probably named after the sound they make. Phil mentions seeing them in the frozen food section at Trade Fair supermarket in Astoria Queens, NY. There was an escaped capybara in California, and friend-of-the-pod Victor made twitter for it. The government will today announce changes to its much criticised MIQ system. Thousands of New Zealand passport holders are trapped overseas, many having tried for months to get home. One man, marine engineer Andrew Black, left for Australia last December for work. His wife has been living here alone while he has missed out on the new randomised lobby system five times. RNZ has found the current lobby system for bookings is already being gamed by a third party group. Black told RNZ MIQ reporter Katie Todd that the current system doesn't reflect people's situations.

Phil and Jake are joined by Andrew Black-- drummer for Laughing Matter, The Explosion and The Primals-- to rank the 2002 movie Drumline, and the PG-13 movie rating on the List of Every Damn Thing.Find Andrew on Instagram (@blacksrecords), and his band Laughing Matter is there as well (@laughingmatterla). And you gotta listen to Laughing Matter on Spotify (where you can also find The Explosion and The Primals). If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: We talk about a lot of movies in this episode, including Back to the Future Part II, Bring It On, Akeela and the Bee, Caddyshack, Enter the Dragon, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Overboard, Adventures in Babysitting, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, D.C. Cab, Howard the Duck, Judgement Night and Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. Wazzup (1999) was a Budweiser ad directed by Drumline director Charles Stone III based on his own short film "true" which was based on a real event in his life. Here's the Make 7… Up Yours commercial starring Orlando Jones. Malik is the drummer who Andrew recommends following on Instagram. We talk a bit about Washington D.C. go-go music, which is a regional musical style that never got the widespread recognition it deserves. Da' Butt by Experience Unlimited is probably the most well-known go-go song. We make reference to HBCUs. There are about 100 historically black colleges & universities in the US. Atlanta A&T is a fictional school. Morris Brown is a real college though and that's their band in the movie. We give props to the Judgement Night soundtrack. Jake was right that there's an Onyx / Biohazard collabo on it, but Andrew's right that it's not the song “Slam”. DuckTales is a Disney cartoon adventure show about Donald Duck's nephews and uncle going on adventures. The original 1980s run was heavily based on the 1950s comics that taught Phil how to read. Phil's son watches the new series which features Paul F. Tompkins as Donald's cousin, Gladstone. Andrew Black is the deputy mayor of Sackville.
Thanks for your time, with all you do, I know how demands can pile up. Today I learned about Sackville, all of them, upper, lower, the middle one, plus New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. About the UMNB, which stands for, Union Municipality New Brunswick and is having there annual general meeting at the begining of October. Then I learned about the 9 zones that make local service areas like regional districts or countys. Its always so informative to hear about my municipal peers in another province. How the tools of colleagues and communication can mirror each other on either side of the countries coasts. We talk about Mount Allison university and the additional seasonal ballooning of 2500-3000 people. We talked about loads of other stuff, too many to list but i do endeaver to. Housing prices, taxation without representation, minister of municipal reform as mayor of 40-50% of the province, the dirty word (amalgamation), ripple effects, martitine life, coming back to where you grew up after moving away to Toronto, Boston & Connecticut. How it feels to be "not from here" townies, students and tourists, collabouration quad riding, grooming and maintaining multi use trail systems, lumber, J D Irving. From the tip of the bay of fundy to massive agriculture and food of future generations. How it feels when you talk about it a lot because it effects us all, but it can still go nowhere. The shared sense of urgency around issues like the local hospital cutting its hours. The way that death by a 1000 cuts means you eventually bleed out. Cuts to education can take awhile to over cone, if ever. Plus with climate change top of mind to many i learn about his other, other gig at the Blugenics Innovations warehouse doing shipping logistics and supply chain work. Also comparing some similarities with coastal economic development and tourism opportunities. Good times!

We've featured other members of his team in Episode 21 & Episode 26 so thought it was time to talk to the guy who started it all. We were worried that he'd start feeling left out. Show highlights include: Why focusing more on operations rather than production is the key ingredient to growing a successful business (3:09) The weird way growing too fast can bankrupt your business (10:41) How promoting your project managers to owners prevents them from bailing on your company for something else (and helps you keep your sanity as your grow) (18:32) The “Incubator Secret” that attracts the best builders to your team Constantly finding ways to improve in every aspect of the business (22:13) Truthfully it's not that hard to have high revenue. What's hard is to have an NOI at the end of the year that's positive (30:34) How your operations are the difference between a 7 or 8% NOI and a 0% NOI (even if you're a multi-million dollar business) (31:14) If you'd like to get in touch with Andrew you can email him at andrew.black@alairhomes.com or send him a DM on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/alairhomesforesthill/ To get the most out of this podcast, head over to https://buildernuggets.com and join our active community of like-minded builders and remodelers.
On this episode we're talking about bringing a higher standard to cannabis production. With the federal legalization of hemp and the continuing state-by-state rollout of recreational cannabis, the industry is just picking up steam in the U.S. A California-based nonprofit started by David Bronner is aiming to lead the way on setting regenerative and socially responsible standards that empower farmers and farm workers in a rapidly expanding agricultural sector. In this episode we're joined by Andrew Black, the executive director of Sun+Earth Certified, a beyond-organic standard for cannabis and hemp, and Josh Gulliver, a regenerative hemp and herb farmer based in Oregon, to talk about the challenges and opportunities on the horizon for cannabis growers. This episode is particularly relevant right now, as three U.S. Senate Democrats have just presented a plan to end the federal prohibition on cannabis. This interview was recorded back in April, so that's not part of the conversation, but what we do talk about is the increasing need for cannabis producers to lead the way on what it means to be truly regenerative. Right now we are at a crossroads. Does cannabis become just another commodity crop or can we use it as a vehicle to transform agriculture? In this episode, we go deep into Sun+Earth Certified standards and what that means for the future of cannabis. Sun+Earth, if you don't already know, is the non-profit started by David Bronner, who is the head of Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps as well as an outspoken cannabis activist. The non-profit has set ambitious standards for cannabis production that include earth care, human empowerment and community engagement. To find out more about Sun+Earth Certified go to sunandearth.org. Today our guest is Steven Hall, author of The Raw Sharks Texts a seminal and amazing book that was released almost 14 years ago and published in pretty much every language in the world. It won the Somerset Maugham Award and should be a movie soon. Steven has written for Granta and Lonely Planet and build tons of video games. But today we will be talking about Maxwell’s Demon, Steven’s new book which is being released on April 6th in the US by Grove. Thomas Quinn is having a hard time. A failed novelist, he's stuck writing short stories and audio scripts for other people's characters. His wife, Imogen, is working on a remote island halfway around the world, and talking to her over the webcam isn't the same. The bills are piling up, the dirty dishes are stacking in the sink, and the whole world seems to be hurtling towards entropic collapse. Then he gets a voicemail from his father, who has been dead for seven years. Thomas's relationship with Stanley Quinn--a world-famous writer and erstwhile absent father--was always shaky, not least because Stanley always seemed to prefer his enigmatic assistant and prot g Andrew Black to his own son. Yet after Black published his first book, Cupid's Engine, which went on to sell over a million copies, he disappeared completely. Now strange things are happening to Thomas, and he can't help but wonder if Black is tugging at the seams of his world behind the scenes. Absurdly brilliant, wildly entertaining, and utterly mind-bending, Maxwell's Demon triumphantly excavates the ways we construct meaning in a world where chaotic collapse looms closer every day.

Sheena Russell is the co-founder of Made with Local, and her story will inspire anyone who wants to be their own boss, and act on their beliefs and values. Made with Local sources local ingredients and then works with social enterprises to employ people who have barriers to the mainstream workforce. When COVID hits, the government orders this 'high risk' segment of the population into isolation, leaving Sheena with a ton of orders to fill and no one there to help her. Sheena makes a trademark entrepreneurial move - she jumps in with her family to bake, make and ship products, and fast-tracks a new product that is perfect for these times. If that isn't enough to earn your admiration, Sheena is also a Certified B Corp, to reflect a new kind of business that balances purpose and profit. They are legally required to consider the impact of their decisions on their workers, customers, suppliers, community, and the environment. Sheena is part of a community of leaders, driving a global movement of people using business as a force for good. Sheena's challenge is to have her brands compete for attention in some of the world's most competitive food markets. To help her with her quest we invite Andrew Black, CEO of Brand Project, a venture capital firm, Bobby Sahni, from Ethnicity Matters to advise her on tapping into the multicultural market. Kellie Sauriol, from RBC, talks about how to ensure her growth ambitions are supported. Presented by RBC. Humble beginnings (01:24) After graduating from Dalhousie University, Sheena joins the City of Halifax teaching businesses how to recycle but needs a more creative outlet. In 2012, spotting an opportunity to produce healthy and tasty snacks, Sheena starts Made with Local. She starts selling her snacks at local farmers markets on the East Coast, building a strong following and in 2016 enters Sobeys Atlantic with her real food bars. Local ingredients, local partnerships (04:59) Using local ingredients is not enough, Sheena partners with a Nova Scotian social enterprise, the Flower Cart Group, using them to help make her products. With incredible support from SheEO mentors Made with Local expands further. Now with a presence in Sobeys Ontario, a private label partnership with FarmBoy and opportunities to expand their partnership with Loblaws, Sheena’s grassroots approach has paid off. To boot, Made With Local achieves a B-Corp certification. Down, but not out (10:30) COVID-19 strikes! “Well, it hit us like a ton of bricks.” With their production capacity completely shut down, and a large order pending, Sheena had to make alternate plans. It was all hands on deck, Sheena, her husband, and her director of sales roll up their sleeves and baked and packed. As if that was not enough, they were in the process of launching a new product. Expert advice (14:10) Andrew Black, Founder Managing Partner, Brand Project recommend Sheena continue to persevere in retail and do more sampling once COVID-19 allows her to do so. Bobby Sahni, Partner & Co-Founder, Ethnicity Matters, points out that: when catering to different ethnic communities dietary requirements, they are not all are homogeneous. Kellie Sauriol, Regional Vice President, Business Financial Services, RBC suggests focussing on working capital and cash flow constraints and using a forecast to do so. Capitalism has a conscience - Tony’s closing thoughts (22:47) Sheena has proven that profit and purpose can go hand in hand. Sourcing local ingredients and partnering with social enterprise, not as charity, but as a fundamental part the business and culture. And inspire of growing the business in one on the most competitive provinces, Ontario, remained true to her values, values that matter to all of us. The coronavirus is stretching into April and it’s easy to overlook special dates like Passover, Easter, or 4.20! The annual National Cannabis Policy Summit will not be taking place this spring in DC, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t highlight the significance of 4.20 and how far we have come in the cultivation, legalization and potentially full decriminalization of cannabis products. In this episode, Sweta and Taylor talk to Oregon cannabis farmer, Andrew Black, following a C-SPAN panel featuring Sweta and Andrew on how to produce cannabis products sustainably on a warming planet. Sweta, Andrew, and Taylor cover everything from hemp agriculture to why small farmers AND Big Pharma oppose legalizing cannabis. It’s a complicated landscape, but one worth understanding! Sweta and Taylor kick off this episode by trying one of Andrew’s CBD products. Andrew promised there would be no psychoactive effects, and while that held true for both hosts, CBD is NOT regulated. Any therapeutic benefits or promised effects are determined by the manufacturer, and it’s important for potential consumers to conduct due diligence. We also do not recommend mixing alcohol with cannabis products, and please consult credible expert guidance before enhancing this happy hour with us with anything beyond alcohol! Andrew is one of my favorite people, and in a world where race and ethnicity is a very heavy topic of conversation, he sheds some light on what it is like for him of being both half black and half white. He goes into detail about some of his struggle as a young kid and growing up with his family who is predominantly white, and how he handles things now.

On this episode, we talk with Andrew Black – Public Lands Field Director for NWF – and his work with the New Mexico Wildlife Federation to expand access to the Sabinosa Wilderness. And as an ordained Presbyterian minister, we get to hear Andrew preach the gospel of public lands. In this episode, Sammi and Beau are joined by guest Karolinn to wonder why this movie was made, why any movies are made, what is the meaning of art, and why is that pool table inside a black void? Revisit 1995 by way of 2003 with us in 'Pride & Prejudice: A Latter-Day Comedy,' a retelling of Austen's most beloved classic set in the world of the Latter Day Saints.
