They take an in-depth look at the ‘responsive' part of Responsive Fundraising and talk about what it really means to be personal with your donors when communicating with them. Other Topics Include: - The changing demographics in the fundraising landscape - Why donors have started to lose trust in nonprofits, and how to overcome it. - Using data and technology to connect with your donors - The dilemma surrounding ‘mass customization' - How leadership can either make or break a nonprofits ability to embrace change Discover more at virtuous.org/podcast. #170 | What if we’ve got the essence of fundraising all wrong?

I wonder if we’ve got the essence of fundraising all wrong? As Riccardo shared his story, it occurred to me that it was the conversations that most characterized his gift-giving experiences at MIT. We would do well to consider that the essence of great fundraising is a conversation; or, to be more precise, a series of regular and ongoing conversations. We all know that it’s become quite cliche to suggest that fundraising is about relationships; however, I believe we’re all deliberately ambiguous about what that means for fear that we will be found a fraud. If conversation is the essence of great fundraising then perhaps our concern should be the quality of those conversations. Let’s be real: absent genuine conversation, what is a relationship anyway. As I mentioned at the beginning, Responsive Fundraising's 2020 recovery plan is now available for download here. Shelby has been a part of the team at Colby College for 5 years. In her role, Shelby leads audience-centric strategy and content for annual fund communications in addition to managing relationships with class volunteers to help them reach ambitious goals. Colby is currently in the midst of a campaign for $750M, the largest campaign in liberal arts college history. Shelby and the team at Colby are aware that their unwillingness to take on risks is actually the biggest risk of all. They collectively understand that "We've always done it that way" is an especially expensive way of thinking and just don’t buy it. What occurred to me during our conversation is that Shelby really enjoys her work, which isn’t something I always pick up on with other guests. She appreciates her team’s sense of community and collaboration as well as their willingness to scrap bad ideas. She believes fundraising should not be rote or mechanical and doesn’t have to resemble an assembly line. Later this week, our recovery plan will be available free for download. Karlene is a passionate advocate for the life-changing impact of education and libraries and finds much joy in creating partnerships with her donors. Karlene has co-authored two books about library fundraising and has taught graduate courses for UNC, Greensboro, the University of Tennessee, and the College of William & Mary. As a dancer, Karlene described the pivot as a turn on an axis without going anywhere. The term has long been a buzzword for startups however it seems to have taken on new meaning recently. It occurs to me that pivoting is just one of a number of skills that we expect of talented dancers. When it comes to fundraising, perhaps rather than allowing recent upsets in the economy to persuade us to move in another direction, we just need to be certain that they know how to dance in the first place.  On Wednesday, our twelve-month recovery plan will be available to download for free. SUMMARY David Kamp shines light on a bright, optimistic movement in his book, Sunny Days: The Children's Television Revolution that Changed America. When a group of progressive intellectuals, artists, and activists decided to focus on disadvantaged children, a children’s television revolution began. Driven by their agenda was to “do good,” this group also believed “the federal government could and should play a major role in early-childhood initiatives.” Fortunately, political winds blew in their sails, providing both funding and enthusiasm for a plethora of children’s television educational programming in the 60s and 70s. Meanwhile, the social sciences were also gaining credibility, adding psychological and educational underpinnings to what may have otherwise been perceived as simply silly or fluffy. With the burgeoning popularity of Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and the political will to provide free access to learning, children’s television enjoyed the “Age of Enlightenment, Jr.” Further fueling this critical movement were “media professionals, thought leaders, and politicians alike prioritizing children and education as they never had before—and in so doing, changing the lives of millions.” In short, Kamp’s Sunny Days, substantiated by interviews and research, helps paint a picture of a rare time in history when people chose to put the public good above their own careerism. KEY PEOPLE & PROGRAMS Joan Ganz Cooney & Lloyd Morrisette – led the charge to leverage television for preparing preschoolers for school Bob Keeshan - founder, creator, and main character of the show Captain Kangaroo; eschewed using children’s television to promote children’s toy guns and other toys Children’s Television Workshop (CTW) – original American nonprofit responsible for the production of several educational children's programs—including its first and best-known, Sesame Street Sesame Street – the granddaddy of all children’s television programs developed in the 60s and 70s Jon Stone – original conceiver and key showrunner of Sesame Street; brought a certain hipness to TV, making the show popular with children and adults alike Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In – American sketch comedy show that inspired the pacing for Sesame Street Jim Henson’s Muppets – held magic in their abstract nature; stimulated imaginations Electric Company – a fast-paced spinoff of Sesame Street designed to teach Schoolhouse Rock – conceived by ad men at McCaffrey & McCall when they recognized children could easily memorize words to songs Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood - long-running children’s program conceived by Fred Rogers and informed by developmental pediatric psychiatrist Margaret McFarland Matt Robinson – creator of Muppet character Roosevelt Franklin whose mannerisms and speech were primarily representative of an African-American man Free to Be…You and Me – program hosted by Marlo Thomas; promoted a strong feminist agenda QUOTE FROM KAMP “Children’s advocates…had high regard for children, believing them capable of intellectual and emotional engagement, and of seeing through cutesy artifice.” BUY Sunny Days: The Children's Television Revolution That Changed America RECOMMENDATION BUY Puppet Pals, brightly-colored, oversized children’s puppets (designed and sold by Andrew Olsen). Leadership is influence.2. Everyone is a leader and everyone has to grow to maximize leadership impact.3. Leadership is about people. If the people aren’t better as a result of your presence, you’re not leading well. 4. Leading is challenging. As John Maxwell says, “If you’re a leader, there will never be two easy consecutive days in your live.” 5. If you wouldn’t follow yourself, why would you expect others to follow you? 6. The power of “just relaxing” in your leadership.7. Telling people what you think they want to hear isn’t leadership. You have to care enough to be candid, even when the feedback might hurt a little. 8. In leadership, character trumps skill all day long.9. The most influential leaders love people, but they don’t depend on being loved by people. 10. If you’re going to grow as a leader, you’re going to have to take risks. You’ll fail sometimes, but that’s ok. That’s part of the process. There’s so much more in this episode than what I’ve outlined here.
