Today on the show with Dan Tyre, we talk about how infusing your business with a human centered outlook at every level can help you achieve exponential growth while maintaining healthy relationships. Dan is a rapid growth expert and has many tips from years of developing several massively successful startups. We talk about some of the most important keys to growth such as niching, effective websites, human centered sales, and the “freemium” business model. This conversation is a much needed reminder to treat each other like humans and do our best to help others. When you strive for this, your business, and the world, will become a much better place! Key Takeaways  The best way to grow in 2023 is to have a very narrow niche. Embrace the “freemium” model by using free stuff to hook potential clients, build trust, and create raving fans. For serious growth, your customers are more important than your sales team. Utilize your website to get a conversation started with potential clients, don't try to sell to them immediately. About Dan Tyre Dan is a 14-year-veteran of HubSpot, hired as employee number six. While initially the first salesperson, Dan has since helped expand the sales team through management, recruiting, and training. He is also a frequent contributor to the HubSpot Sales Blog and coined the term "Schmarketing" to describe the necessary alignment between sales and marketing. Outside of HubSpot, Dan leverages his 42 years of multidisciplinary business experience in sales, marketing, and service to help scale fast-growing companies and coach those that want to harness the power of Inbound Marketing to improve their bottom line. In April 2018, he published a book with Wiley Business Press with Todd Hockenberry called Inbound Organization: How to Build and Strengthen Your Company's Future Using Inbound Principles, and he regularly shares his knowledge through guest appearances on podcasts and as a speaker at worldwide events. In his local Arizona community, Dan puts pen to paper with his life motto of “always be helping” and spends time advising startups and mentoring executives and young people with ambitions with the Arizona Commerce Authority and Galvanize location in Phoenix. He also demonstrates his commitment to social responsibility with mentorship at Seed Spot. Most proudly, Dan has been married to the beautiful, smart, and thoughtful Amy Tyre for 33 years, and they share two children, Eli and Sally, and a rescue pup named Stinson. Selling With Social Sales Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 28, 2021 43:19

The global pandemic that has stretched into its third year has seen not just a boom in digital sales but has ushered with it a change in how modern sellers can attract and engage with modern buyers. Traditional “spray and pray” methods that once worked, no longer have the same success rate, which has forced sales leaders to employ a new set of selling techniques. What exactly will work in 2022 for prospecting and building sales pipeline is the main topic of discussion I had with sales genius, Dan Tyre, in this episode of the Modern Selling Podcast. Dan Tyre, Director at HubSpot is one of the leading inbound marketing and sales experts on the planet. As a member of the original team in May of 2007, Dan has led the recruiting, training, and growth of HubSpot's sales team with vigor. Before HubSpot, Dan worked at four other startups of note: Businessland, as Area Director; ALI Technologies, as Founder & CEO; CelebraTech, as Co-Founder and VP of Sales; and Groove Networks, as Regional Manager. At HubSpot, Dan has pioneered the concept of alignment between sales and marketing known as "Smarketing," a core tenet of inbound marketing now followed by thousands of companies around the world. He's been instrumental in the creation and growth of several sales teams that are now thriving hives of activity at HubSpot. Dan continues to inspire and teach HubSpotters as a sales trainer, as a creator of the HubSpot Leadership program, as a blogger on the HubSpot blog. Dan's infectious high energy, especially when he talks about ‘marketing' is why I am so excited to welcome him as a guest on the Modern Selling Podcast. Download the full episode and get a taste of Dan's genius as he discusses the top sales strategies to use in 2022 to crush prospecting and better convert leads into loyal customers. How has Sales changed since 2020? I've seen a rapid evolution, here at Vengreso, with more and more companies seeking out our digital sales training courses such as Modern Sales Mastery for Teams. However, I wanted to hear Dan's insights and better understand the shifts he's seen happening and what he anticipates to come next in the world of sales. Dan shares, “I've read that over 1M sales jobs will disappear in the next 18 months. With the Great Resignation, the way that companies do business will have to change. Sales are no exception to this either. So, it's a must now than ever before to know how to be a better salesperson in 2022.” With my own sales teams, I've placed a heavy emphasis on making our sales calls, even if they are through Zoom, as interactive and engaging as possible. Modern buyers are much more sophisticated and skeptical than before, so finding ways to connect digitally with leads is critical to the success of the modern seller. Dan agrees, “Today we have to contend with the empowered buyer. This is someone who has done their research before they ever talk to a salesperson. They're going to know more about the basics of what they're looking to buy than they've ever had before and salespeople have to be ready to field in-depth questions.” Listen in to the conversation to hear what free sales resources Dan suggests that sales leaders have their teams complete to be successful in 2022. How to Win with Inbound Sales When it comes to finding data-driven ways to improve the sales process, Dan is the leading expert on what works and what will work well into the future. So, I asked him to share his expertise and insights on how sales teams can master the inbound sales process. Dan's unique six characteristics of a winning sales process is something we all should study and look to implement as soon as possible: Treat people like human beings. According to Dan, the emphasis has to be on connecting with your prospect, instead of looking to pitch them to buy. Build rapport, to establish trust first and foremost. Look to help, not sell. As I always say, selling is the art of helping – and Dan agrees. As sales professionals, we have to look to provide a solution as opposed to selling a product or service. Focus beats bandwidth. Traditionally, sales teams would take a ‘spray and pray' approach – going after volume in leads, instead of the quality of leads. Dan suggests honing in on one particular buyer persona and mastering selling to them first. Solve a problem. As with #2, when sales teams can offer solutions to their customers' problems, then they'll get much farther in their sales outreach attempts. Customer experience is the only sustainable advantage. Dan explains that the average company has 47 competitors in the marketplace. So chances are very good that someone offers the exact same service or product that you do. The difference for leads often comes down to the customer experience.  Manage sales data. This is where the role of Revenue Operations is so important. To learn more about this and AI-driven sales enablement, check out my podcast with Howard Brown. Dan provides a host of other tips and strategies you won't want to miss. Tune into the full episode to hear his sales advice and what you should be doing now to stand out in your sales conversations. Strategies for Prospecting in 2022 While we were on the discussion of what's likely to work in the future, I wanted Dan to share his perspective on prospecting. I know at Vengreso, over the past four years when we surveyed sales professionals, prospecting has continually been ranked as the hardest part of the sales cycle. In fact, out of 1,295 sales reps polled in November 2021, 69% of them said that prospecting was the most time-consuming step. So, I was curious to hear Dan's advice based on his 40+ years of sales experience. The guidance he shared is very similar to what I teach our new sales reps in their onboarding training. Dan suggests that when prospecting, especially during cold calling to: Always stand up and smile – this helps you bring high energy and engagement to the call. Thank the prospect for answering the phone – how often are we thanked for picking up the phone? Dan says that this alone is a game-changer for sales reps. Introduce yourself and pause to hear their response – prospecting is your first chance to have a conversation with the hopes of building a relationship with your lead. There's no better way to do this than to give your prospect plenty of opportunities to speak (without you launching into a full-blown sales pitch). Be sure to download this episode of the Modern Selling Podcast to learn more about the Sales Flywheel and why it can be a key differentiator for your sales teams in 2022.

Dan Tyre devotes as much effort to giving away what he’s learned as he does at his job. Dan was the first salesman on the original team at HubSpot in 2007. Now he’s sales director, overseeing “smarketing” — sales + marketing — for more than 750 employees. But he admits his own mission is more ambitious still: “I want to do the most good I can for the universe,” Dan says, and he starts by sharing what he knows. “I’ll sit with entrepreneurs and ask, ‘Where are you stuck?’” Dan says, “because entrepreneurs hit these things all the time. So if you find somebody else who’s been through it, who’s seen that movie before, that’s very valuable.” ______ Rise Grind Repeat Podcast powered by EIC Agency ______ Hosted by Dustin Trout Produced by Andrei Gardiola __________ Check out the full video episode at: https://bit.ly/3dlwjnJ https://spoti.fi/2Mgfpe6 https://apple.co/2MiQdUv For more information visit our website at https://eic.agency/ We are also on Instagram @EveryImpressionCounts

No one wants to be cold called by an irrelevant company anymore. TV ads and direct mail can be just as bad. There's a reason why outbound marketing is called “interruption marketing.” In 2021, inbound marketing is the solution that your customers want — and that you need to succeed. We invited Dan Tyre — employee No. 6 at HubSpot, angel investor, and author (among other titles) — to present his talk, “5 Reasons to Start Inbound Marketing in 2021.”

A note from Josh Fedie, Founder of SalesReach and host of The Buyer Enablement Podcast about this episode: Smarketing. It's a word you either love or hate. But that does not change the fact that the relationship between Sales and Marketing roles functioning together are more critical today than they have ever been. If you work in a customer facing role, I don't need to tell you that sales has changed. You experience this every day. This episode is not to discuss just what has changed, but how you can refine your efforts to change within the new framework of buyer expectations with the goal of helping you find success in your business development and customer success activities. And if you're in a marketing role, to help shed some light on what your team-members in the trenches are going through so you can better support them in the pursuit of revenue. Helping to deliver this message is Dan Tyre. An individual that is no less than epic. An advisor to multiple startups, 5-time startup founder and 6th employee of HubSpot who has helped them reach incredible milestones in revenue, but more importantly helped thousands of companies learn from the inbound methodology and find success themselves. Dan is a personal friend, an incredible resource, and a wealth of knowledge always looking to be of help to anyone. If you don't yet know Dan, join me and get to know a little more about him. Held various positions in sales, management, recruiting, training and more.  He also created the term SMARKETING to help create alignment between sales and marketing.  Dan mentors so many reps aside from asking others to go mentor others and pay it forward.  Check out his best-selling book,Inbound Organization.  Learn from his experience working at 2 person startups to organizations of 45,000 people. Dan:BOOOOOOOOM!JB:You’ve had such an interesting career working with so many different people and recently training agency partners at scale on how to sell and grow their businesses. How did you get into sales?DT:Desperation.  Sold books door to door to work my way through college. Went to Colgate university in 1976 and didn’t have a lot of money, couldn’t go back sophomore year unless he made $5K. Southwestern Corporation, Nashville, TN. As long as I can make $5 grand, I’m in! Incredible sales experience.  COMMISSION ONLY! Sent to Bellingham, WA.  95% of people quit. I couldn’t quit because I didn’t have enough money to get back home.  I had to consult with bank Presidents to gas station attendants and it was a fantastic introduction to the sales process. We read Tommy Hopkins and learned consultative selling. I was a slow percolator and it took me a while to get it.  I was out in the field 2 weeks and I was scared, would fumble through stuff and didn’t have high confidence. A lady took me in, gave me a cookie as I stumbled through my sales pitch and said SHE WOULD BUY! Took the $25 and ran to McDonald’s to eat my first meal in a week!Door to door selling carrying his Dictionaries in a rolling case. Building rapport, at the time had to “wait for my husband to come home” DAN → that’s exactly what your neighbor said….Ms Joyce said the same thing, but realized she could spend the $$ because it’s her kids education → now his customers were ready to buy showing proof of sales from their neighbors. Last month using that strategy closed 40% of people after everyone knew him and got a deposit from most people! First year Individual Contributor $5,0002nd year 9 guys recruited, got a cut from that , 7 quit, 2 stayed and made $8 grand!Junior year went to Vegas playing pokerGraduated college in 1980  from Colgate University Played bass in heavy metal rock and roll band Being a bass player is a great foundation for being a great business person1982 tired of making $25/week - 14 computer stores in BostonWalked in to Computer Store, Roger Lund gave him a shot and Dan became #1 sales person in 3 monthsRoger left for Startup, wanted to take Dan with him and would pay dan $1,500/year more. Topics Discussed and Key Points: How the internet and social media changed the lead generation game Why marketing is more important than sales Qualities of an inbound organization The basic philosophy and foundational principles of inbound marketing What touchpoints to put in place to qualify leads as reliably and efficiently as possible Why having happy customers is more important today than ever before The difference between marketing qualified leads and sales qualified leads and how to advance each A primer on lead scoring Best practices around workflows and marketing automation Why use HubSpot?   Episode Summary: In today's episode, Debbie speaks with Dan Tyre on inbound marketing and marketing automation. Dan is the author of Inbound Organization: How to Build and Strengthen Your Company's Future Using Inbound Principles (2018). He is a speaker, blogger, mentor, and coach for those who want to harness the power of inbound marketing to improve their bottom line. Dan joined HubSpot as a member of the original team in 2007, and today serves as the company's Sales Director. Potential buyers, both B2B and B2C, like to consider their options anonymously if possible, and oftentimes do their research well in advance of making their final decision (sometimes up to a year or so) depending on the size of the investment. What they see, in the absence of a salesperson (who they wish to avoid at all costs) is paramount to making the sale. This is why, according to Dan, marketing is more important than sales. As opposed to focusing purely on sales, “the attributes of an inbound organization is they like to help people,” says Dan. “They do things out of the goodness of their heart.” In fact, in 2014, Dan published an article titled “Always Be Closing Is Dead: How to Always Be Helping”. As little as ten years ago, there were more gatekeepers and other such hurdles to reach prospects. You had to pick up the phone and make calls. Today, the amount of online tools and platforms you have at your disposal makes inbound marketing an available option even for smaller companies. On the other hand, the average company has 44 competitors today. As Dan stresses, it is important to “add value before you extract value” if you want to stand out. Listen in as Dan unleashes a treasure trove of best practices for today's inbound marketer, including how to define your persona, qualifying (and disqualifying) prospects, creating an effective sales funnel, and HubSpot's competitive advantage over other growth platforms.   Reach out to Dan at https://www.dantyre.com or dtyre@hubspot.com, and order a copy of his book at https://www.inboundorganization.com/

HubSpot was founded in 2005 with zero customers. Today, over 78,000 businesses in 120 countries use HubSpot to grow. With the company pulling in $675 million in revenue last year, HubSpot is one of the most impressive growth stories of the past 15 years - from the raw numbers and thought leadership to their culture and transparency. What would you ask someone who was in the room where it happened that first year and has been instrumental at the company every step of the way since? Dan Tyre, director at HubSpot (HubSpot employee #6), is that person. I recently spoke with Dan about coaching sales reps and instilling the inbound mindset throughout your organization for the Modern Sales Management podcast. During this episode, we discussed increasing sales by teaching your sales reps to be more helpful, including: How has managing sales teams changed in the past few years?Should sales people expect to get inbound leads? How have video emails from sales people changed the game? What is the inbound sales methodology? Is there more revenue in being a generalist or a specialist in 2020?How do you systematize inbound selling values in your sales organization? What words can salespeople use to disarm buyers and create opportunities faster (hint: you have to mean it)?Does cold calling still work? What is warm calling in sales? How did the concepts, processes, and tips in Dan’s book, The Inbound Organization, get created?Who benefits most from reading The Inbound Organization? What does an “inbound organization” do differently than other types of companies? What is a MSPOT and how does it help your business gain a competitive advantage? How does a CRO or VP of Sales apply the principles of an inbound organization to increase revenue? What are the biggest pitfalls sales managers make when implementing an inbound sales methodology?Do introverts or extroverts make better sales people? What is the role of diversity and inclusion in creating a powerhouse sales organization? What is the number one question Dan gets as he speaks to groups around the world? No matter how many Amazon reviews you have on a product, you always need more. Colleen Quattlebaum of eComEngine joined me to chat about the power of Amazon reviews and why you shouldn’t be complacent once you’ve reached a high number. Now Amazon reviews versus buyer feedback are two different things and affect your listings in different ways. Reviews help boost your visibility and inspire others to buy when they are recent, well written, and come from a trusted source. Reviews once given also can’t be erased or changed. Buyer feedback on the other hand affects your Amazon SEO and a negative feedback can be changed. It is still extremely important to have amazing feedback scores. Listen as Colleen shares how eComEngine approaches the review process and why you should be asking your customers to leave reviews.  If this isn’t already an integral part of your process… then you have some work to do. Listen in to see how you can start implementing systems and processes around requesting reviews, today.   In This Episode: [00:29] Welcome special guest and Amazon Sellers group sponsor Colleen Quattlebaum.  [02:28] Hear a bit about Colleen’s background and her experience with EcomEngine. [04:10] How important is it to have reviews on amazon and why?  [05:46] What are the top things that differentiate very similar products?  [07:57] Are there best practices for getting reviews early on?  [09:29] Do certain products fare better with the early reviewer program?  [10:05] Aside from early reviewers, how else can a new seller get reviews?  [12:54] What type of verbiage is appropriate for requesting reviews from purchasers?  [15:15] Is the manual request a review button better for conversions than automated requests?  [16:45] How EcomEngine automated the request a review button.  [19:59] Can you keep the automated request a review action from sending out to someone who has already left a review? [21:47] What’s the best system for getting higher numbers of reviews?  [22:27] Learn other ways to get reviews for your products.  [23:26] What should sellers be aware of right now with Amazon and reviews versus feedback? Our ideas about customer experience have probably changed drastically due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Customer experience is no longer just about getting value from a service or experience. It's actually about helping each other survive.   When customer experience is that essential to keeping our livelihoods and lives safe, we have to revisit its deepest foundation: relationships.   In this episode, I interview Todd Hockenberry, Consultant, Advisor, and Coach at Top Line Results, about customer centricity and inbound organization.   What we talked about:   - Alignment is actually about teamwork   - True customer-centricity means knowing more about the customer than they know about themselves   - A traditional playbook is just frustrating your reps & customers   - We are all connected, and no one can succeed alone   Check out this resource we mentioned during the podcast:   - Dan's book is Inbound Organization   - His coauthor Dan Tyre was also a guest on the Customer Experience Podcast   Subscribe, listen, and rate/review the Customer Experience Podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Play or Google Podcasts, and find more episodes on our blog.

Dan Tyre explains why he goes silent.  How comfortable are you with silence?  Here are the reasons Dan Tyre uses silence in a conversation; Silence shows you are interested in the response of the person you are talking to. Silence is part of active listening. Silence prevents you from rambling about stuff the other person doesn't care about. Dan suggests you should be talking only 30% of the time when you are talking to a prospect.

Guest - Dan Tyre from HubSpot We are excited to have Dan Tyre join us on this week’s episode of the Catalyst Sale Podcast.  The conversation went so well, we ended up recording our longest podcast to date.  Let us know how you like this format, and who you would like us to invite to join us on the podcast. Dan is a director at HubSpot, entrepreneur multiple times over & inbound expert. We cover the do’s and don’t’s when thinking about outreach and connecting with your prospects.   Building rapport - It isn’t just small talk, it is important.  Invest your time in the information gathering phase, and it will pay dividends. When thinking about the connect call - don’t use this as your opportunity to qualify - You have not earned the right to do so.   It is so important to get the person on the other end talking, and focus on the positive.  So many times reps miss with this step.  They start with their agenda, or talking about their company.  Be helpful.  If you are not researching, you don’t deserve the person on the other end to pick-up the phone.   The connect call is focused on helping, be human, provide context.  Be an effective warm caller, by investing time into your prospects.   What’s the best time to call your prospects? What’s the best time to send an email? How many voicemails should you leave before expecting a response? Why does Dan recommend calling early in the morning? Very few people take this from the perspective of respect.  Remember, you are an executive speaking to an executive. Put yourself in front of your customers as one human being to another.   Dan and Mike share their experience, a number of best practices, and ultimately an approach that you can apply today to get results. In this episode (#30! I can't believe it!) I'm in the lab with Dan Tyre, Director at HubSpot. Dan is Hubspot's employee #6. He's been there almost from the beginning and has been a key part of their growth. Dan also developed the concept of smarketing at HubSpot. 1. Can you tell us a little bit about your journey? What led you to HubSpot? I graduated from college in upstate New York, at Colgate University. While I was at school, and afterwards, I was a bass player in a heavy metal rock band. Which was a lot of fun, super exciting, but didn't pay a whole lot. My bass playing days were very fundamental in understanding how to deal with different types of people. I sold dictionaries, working my way through college, door to door in Washington and Oregon. I knew I had a skill there, so I started selling computers in Boston. Then my boss moved to a company by the name of Businessland, a company that IPO-ed in 1983. I had an eight-year run with Businessland, where I worked as a salesperson, sales manager, and general manager. We went through fantastic growth, and I got addicted to fast-growing companies. 2. How do you maintain work/life balance and productivity? There is no such thing as work/life balance. I've got a beautiful wife Amy, who I've been married to for 25 years. We try to set the right boundaries. She knew when we got married that I was pretty hardcore. She's been incredibly accepting of that lifestyle for most of our marriage. If it gets too bad and the travel doesn't work, she's very upfront and will tell me. My family is great and very supportive of all the times I jump on planes. It's not always easy, but they've been a solid support. The only things I do are work and my family. I only have a couple of other outside interests. But work for me isn't work. Work for me is getting on the phone and talking to people like you, doing the Startup Grind, or talking with customers. And that's a ball of fun. I laugh all day. My dog, when I work from home, thinks I'm insane. 3. You've been a driving force in the growth and scale-up of several businesses, and even your own. Are there any keys to to success or tips you can share for an entrepreneur trying to grow their business? 1. Focus: If you're trying to do too many things, you can't concentrate. Any time I come to a guy who's running three or four businesses, I'm always a little skeptical. Running HubSpot is like five full-time jobs. 2. Stay Positive: You're never as good as you think you are, you're never as bad as you think you are. 3. Be Resilient: Being an entrepreneur, by definition, means you're going to get whacked around a little bit. That's the fun of it. If it was easy, everybody would do it. 4. Learn to Sell: Selling is a hugely valuable skill. Everybody is selling every hour of every day. Even on this podcast, you're either buying what I'm saying, or you're not. It's helpful to understand which side of the equation you're on. There's some great books to help with that: New Sales Simplified by Mike Weinberg and SNAP Selling by Jill Konrath. 5. Goals: Figure out your business goals and work towards them. 6. Don't Stop: You can't beat somebody who refuses to stop. Even if you're miserable, even if it's really hard, just put one foot in front of the other. 4. Are there any common challenges you see entrepreneurs struggle with the most? You have to pick your first few employees very selectively. When you're first starting a company, you're going to be hanging with these people a lot. You're going to have to bust tail. We're talking 60 or 80-hour weeks for months and years. Then it becomes a little easier when you have 100 people. But up to that time, everybody's wearing 14 hats. Picking the right people, that you're going to spend all that time with, making sure they have a good attitude, and making sure you have a good business model. 5. Did you have a mentor that helped shape your career and the type of business person you are today? Steve Levy, who was CEO of BBN, a federal contractor for the US government. They actually built the ARPANET, the precursor to the internet. I knew his son, and he said, "If you ever start a company, let me know." He assembled a board of directors for me that was unparalleled. I had this little, less than a million-dollar company. We pulled all the guys on the board together. Four times a year, they would come in and tell me what I needed to do to run my business strategically. They essentially invested my company and helped me grow to do that. All I had to do was buy them dinner four times a year. They weren't big drinkers, so it was a cheap date. They were the smartest guys, and it was such an education to understand board governance and scaling. The only thing Steve asked me to do was, when I got successful, if I could help encourage other entrepreneurs to do the same thing. 6. At Startup Grind, you talked about your approach to managing a team. Can you talk more about it? Motivating people and motivating a team is an incredibly important component to being an entrepreneur. In any relationship, whether it's your significant other, your parental relationship, a business relationship, you have nothing unless you have trust. Trust is critically important. When I take over a team for the first time, or when I recruit somebody, I tell them, "For the next 30 days, all we're going to do is build trust." I also want to make sure I understand their goals. There's a great book by Heidi Grant Halvorson called Success: How We Can Reach Our Goals. The people who set goals, time frames for goals, and tangible goals are going to accomplish more, live longer, be healthier, have stronger relationships, and make more money. I give this book to all my subordinates, tell them to read it, and then ask them to do their goals. 7. Do you have a favorite productivity tool or best practice you can share with entrepreneurs? I'm obsessive about preparation. The reason I wanted these questions in advance is because I think pretty quickly on my feet, but I want to have a logical process. I'm a prep monster. I teach all my folks that until you're really good, and it's like second nature, you always prep. That's my best practice. 8. How can folks connect with you? LinkedIn, Twitter, dtyre@hubspot.com, and dantyre@gmail.com.   Biz Hack This week's biz hack is about how to hack your marketing and overall business recipe by first learning the recipe for creating a pancake. This one actually comes from Christopher S. Penn. If you don't follow him, check out his blog here. In a nutshell, he relates marketing to a simple pancake recipe. Here's the essential elements of a pancake (or any recipe, for that matter): Flour: provides stability Milk: the liquid protein provides the gluten to further support the dough's matrix Baking powder: further supports the dough's matrix (or leavening) and gives the pancake its fluffy characteristic Then of course there's the salt, sugar, and oil to enhance the flavor and keep the pancake from sticking to the pan. So where is all this headed? Well, the folks who know the foundation for a good pancake, and what each of the components does and why it is used, can then make any variety of pancake: paleo, vegan, gluten-free, chocolate chip, pumpkin, banana, blueberry, buttermilk… the list goes on. In these cases, you can swap out certain ingredients for others (cow's milk for almond milk) or increase the amount of others to compensate for eliminating a particular ingredient. Marketing, and even building your business, can also be thought of as a recipe in which the recipe is the tactic. Christopher puts it best: "If you just blindly follow marketing recipes without understanding what they do or what the outcome is supposed to look like, then you'll forever be locked into the same way of doing things, rather than adapting to change." First, you have to know what your end goal is (what is the outcome supposed to look like) and the essential ingredients (the components that can't be changed). Say, for example, you find a recipe that suggests you create a media kit and pitch, and you send it to the 25 top national media outlets. Taking a step back, what is this outcome of this? Establishing your brand's messaging or story (a media kit and pitch force you to document this)? Building brand awareness and credibility (positive media coverage can do this)? But media outreach is not the only route to achieving this outcome. You just have to know what those ingredients do. Then, you can determine what to change. For brand awareness, if reaching out to media is not your gig, you can create an online advertising campaign, speak at notable conferences, or seek out awards for your company. The list goes on. One last thing to keep in mind: while the recipe is the tactic (and a cookbook is your book of tactics), the strategy is the menu. It's more of a high-level look at how each of the recipes fit together. For instance, when a chef is planning a tasting menu, they won't start with a steak and red wine, then dish up a salad paired with a white wine to follow. For winter menus, they also tend to stick to more soul-warming foods, not light, cooling recipes. The season, your audience, your budget, and your goals will all impact your marketing menu (strategy) and the recipes (tactics) you use to achieve that outcome. Action Item Spend some time determining the underlying structure of your marketing or business goals. What is the menu? And what recipes or tactics can be used to make that menu successful? Most importantly, what do each of those recipes do, and how will they help you achieve your end goal? Quote of the Week "There is no failure except no longer trying." — Elbert Hubbard   Join me next week, when I'll be testing out a slightly different format. You'll still get the podcast, but I'll also be posting a video interview to go along with it. This was a suggestion from our next guest, Chris Stark. He is the founder of Digital MGMT and is an incredibly brilliant entrepreneur and digital marketer. It came as no surprise that he suggested I step up my game with video. We talk all about online marketing—a big question mark for a lot of folks. Be sure to tune in! For past Biz Hacks, Action Items and Quotes of the Week, visit, SuccessLabr.com. How To Hire the Right People with Juan Kingsbury

The SuccessLab Podcast: Where Entrepreneurs Collaborate for Success

Welcome to the SuccessLab Podcast episode #29. I'm in the lab with Juan Kingsbury, founder of Career Blindspot. We discuss how to find and hire the right people, and perhaps more importantly how to find your role within in your own company. A lot of times, as entrepreneurs we have to wear so many hats - initially it's just something that must be done. But as you grow and begin to hire people on, how do you know what role you should play in the company and where you will be most effective? Can you give us a little background on you? I'm 32 and for the last two years I ran my own consulting company now known as Career Blind Spot. I worked for about 6 years for a assessment company that provided personality profiles to other consultants that use them in their businesses. From fortune 500 to mom-and-pops, they would coach, help them hire the right people, deal with poor-performing employees, etc. As a background player or a third party I would help these other companies and one day I realized I have a learned a lot and I think for the most part I can do this just as well or better. About two years ago I made my official jump and cut the cord. A large part of my time is devoted to helping other consultants to help them figure out what they want to do. You work a lot with people who may not be entirely happy with their current job, how do you generally advise them on making changes? There's not a simple answer. But the reality is most people are too afraid to take that leap and go into something full time. I don't think everyone has to be an entrepreneur. One thing I've found common among entrepreneurs is they don't wait around but you don't have to necessarily have your own business to take control of your career. First, look around. Why are you dreaming about this other job or position? Why is this a mismatch? Self reflect. Identify what kind of work you want to do? Where do you want to be challenged? Decide to put your focus into what it is you want to do. Ask what it will take to get you to that path. Along similar lines, a lot of entrepreneurs struggle with burnout and that can be a product of them not fulfilling a role within their company they are not really happy with. And some times that can be a simple shift. How can they determine that role? First, go to where your mind enjoys doing things. Think about where your mind lights up. What do you enjoy doing? One thing that a lot of people don't realize when they start a business is they have to wear multiple hats. So if you're burned out as an entrepreneur, it's because you are wearing too many damn hats, and it's very real that you may have to do that. But you need to be doing the roles that are most important and hire out the rest. I heard a great quote the other day, “If you expect to be promoted, you need to be replaceable.” Because if someone can't do your job, that means you can't stop doing that job and move on to something else. If an entrepreneur is not in a position to hire, and has to do something they may feel resistance towards doing, how can they overcome that? Do an annual review, and take a hard look at what it's costing you to continue doing this and not get someone else. Of course in the immediate, you're saving money by not hiring someone. And I hear this a lot, that the potential hire can't do this as fast as me or as good as me. Run a cost analysis. If you're doing something that you could've paid someone $10 an hour for, and you're time is worth more than that, then you're wasting a lot of money. Do you have any tips for hiring? Does this apply to contractors as well. It's going to be different for everyone. Most people are bad at it, unless that's your job, most people just aren't great at hiring. It's like dating. Most people are not good at dating. You're good at it when you filter out all the people who aren't the right fit. You have to know what you want first. Then clarify how that job should be done. If you don't do those two things first, you won't attract the right type of person. So know what you want first, and not the superficial stuff like I want someone who will work hard and show up on time. Proverbial phrase - slow to hire, quick to fire. How do you know when it's time to fire? Again, know what you want. You have to have a clear picture of your goals. Identify what superior performance looks like. When you fire it comes down to, ‘Can this person do what they were hired to do?' Then the next question is, ‘Are they willing to try?' Do you have a tip or tool you can share? Something you're loving right now? My tip is if you're a business owner get better at sales. If you can't convince someone that your product or service is valuable, then you don't have a business. My favorite sales book is called “Selling Techniques,” by Bill Brooks. How can people connect with you? CareerBlindSpot.com @CareerBlindspot This week's Biz Hack: This week's biz hack is not so much a hack, but something every entrepreneur should be aware of when planning their 2015 marketing strategy. It's something that could really be detrimental to your plan. So what is it? Last year's tactics. Christopher S. Penn  actually talked about this in a recent blog post. His point was, we too often integrate past tactics and outdated knowledge into new plans, which often leads to ineffective marketing. Of course the big, overarching strategies are still very much relevant, but just look at how quickly marketing tactics have shifted in the past two years. To stay relevant, and effective, connect with customers and potential customers regularly. How, when, where and why do you they like to receive information from you? What do they most want to you, your industry, product or service? Christopher also suggests subscribing to a handful of email newsletters from key players in the marketing arena or in your industry. These folks usually keep a thumb on the pulse of what's happening. Check out Christopher's suggestions. A few he mentions that I absolutely love are Jay Baer's One Thing for content marketing, Search Engine Land for search and SEO, and Social Fresh for social media.
