Ep 181 - 3 Reasons Why You Mustn't Wait to Hire a Career Coach (Like Me!)

Her Ambitious Career

What if you learned something new that made you think: 'I wish I had known this 10 YEARS AGO!' How might life, or your opportunities, have been different? A number of my clients have said this exact thing to me about the career strategies they learn in my program... let's dive into why getting a coach earlier - even today - will set you up for success. In this ep, I am exploring how to find out if you'd benefit from working with a coach, like me (or otherwise!)...We are talking ambition, goals, (as well as having neither)...We are talking about feeling stuck, lacking visibility and support...What to expect from an initial call with a coach...And the 3 very tangible reasons why you must NOT wait another month, another week, another day before reaching out to a coach and getting the support you need to succeed!Something I said today:"My coaching niche is two-fold. It's about career strategy first and foremost. What's in it for you? What do you want from the next 12 months or 5 years? It's also about giving you the strategies - and the structure - to help you fast track your career, whether that's fresh opportunities or promotions to leadership or something else entirely that will give you the meaning and stretch you're looking for." Your team is full of individuals with different values (preferences and styles). The question I am posing today is: do you see merit in, or do you judge, values that are different from your own?I am looking at two different values-preferences today:1. Rational vs Emotional2. Impulsive vs ThoughtfulHow do you identify with each of these paired groups? Are there people in your team with the same preference/ style as you?Are there people in your team with the opposite approach to you?Do you see merit in all approaches or do you judge those that aren't like your own?Are you benefitting from the collective intelligence your team has because of these differences, or not?Something I said today:"As a leader it's important to look at the team as a whole and ask if you're fully utilising your collective intelligence - which means valuing different approaches to solving problems as being equally worthy." Do you tend to over-catastrophise situations, or feel guilt too easily with setbacks? You might layer on 'meaning' to all sorts of situations but there's a much simpler way! Stay in control, feel better and more free with this strategy today!I went to my yoga class last night… it was heaven. My yoga studio overlooks the beach, the sun was still low in the sky and I could hear the waves lapping the beach as I stretched and relaxed at the end of my class. My yoga instructor, Annie, was whispering deep and meaningful suggestions to the room and then she said, "Sometimes a thing is not good; it's not bad; it just is."And despite the fact I wasn't supposed to get distracted, I did. What a thoughtful idea. If you know you tend to layer on meaning to difficult situations (or your interactions with other people perhaps) and it can have a detrimental impact on your emotions and wellbeing, you will LOVE this discussion. xLinks:*** Watch my FREE masterclass right now and learn the steps and strategies to get promoted to leadership in 2025Listen to all podcast eps Follow our Show on Apple Podcasts:Also, if you haven't done so already, follow the podcast. I'm grateful for this opportunity to thank our listeners as I reflect on the progress we've made and share our goals for the future. In this episode, we discuss: The idea of "letting go" and being open to opportunities, as opposed to using brute force to achieve goals. Advice for anyone starting a business and the importance of loving your customers and getting that first sale. The evolution of different kinds of businesses: Strengths Mugs, 10X Vets, and the Academy Fund, and the unique scaling challenges that each business model presents. The concept of "collective victory" and how it aligns with Scott's top Clifton Strengths. The impact of in-person events for 10X Vets and fostering authentic connections. How the Academy Fund has grown through organic connections and introductions rather than traditional hiring processes. The importance of tapping into intuition and being open to unexpected opportunities in business and life. Ginni's perspective on creating space for miracles and allowing things to happen naturally rather than through constant effort. It's been another fantastic couple of years on the SABM Podcast. “That's the beauty of note investing. You don't have to do it locally. It's not like a development deal or a rental property where you have to be semi-local because there are no tenants or maintenance. It's vacant land that is the collateral on these notes. We do deals in 30-plus states and that's how we're able to really scale it.” -Quinn McArthur, USMA ‘08 Quinn McArthur is the Co-Founder and Fund Manager of Legacy Land Fund, a real estate fund that focuses exclusively on the distinctive and expanding land investments sector. By securing a 1st lien position, imposing stringent requirements for robust down payments and credit scores, and maintaining a carefully balanced 50-60% loan-to-value ratio, Legacy Land Fund ensures a secure and reliable approach to land investment and allows for passive income for its investors through mortgage note investing. He explains that because his strategy of buying discounted notes on the secondary market is niche, there is less competition and more opportunity. “You can sometimes convince somebody to buy a bottle of your whiskey the first time because of the story that you have, and I think we have a good story, but if the whiskey is no good, then they're never going to buy another bottle. So the ideal combination is you've got a really good story and you've got a really great product.” -Ted Dumbauld, USNA ‘81 Ted Dumbauld is the Founder and CEO of SoNo 1420, an innovative, Double Gold award-winning distillery in South Norwalk, CT known for its ultra-premium brand whiskeys, vodkas, ready-to-drink vodka-based cocktails, innovative Threesome Ready-to-Mix Cocktails, and botanical gins. Before starting SoNo 1420, Ted was a successful investment manager of public and private securities and an aggressive and creative deal-maker. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Systems Engineering from the United States Naval Academy and his Master of Science in Finance from the MIT Sloan School of Management. In this episode, we discuss: Ted's inspiration for starting SoNo 1420 and what makes his product unique How the special “1420 Finished At Sea” product offering is made The key elements to building a successful spirits brand from scratch The most important relationships Ted has related to sales and marketing Ted's most important goals for 2024 and the biggest challenges he is currently facing Ted shares the challenges that are unique to the spirits industry as it is a three-tiered system made up of producers, distributors, and sellers. Because SoNo 1420 works with many different distributors to get its product out there, there is a lot of work involved when entering into a new market. As an emerging brand, Ted works hard to come up with creative ways to market his products so customers are familiar with them once distributors get them on the shelves in retail locations. We enjoyed speaking with Ted about what it takes to build a successful whiskey brand in the competitive spirits industry. Cheers to the growth of SoNo 1420!
