Bianca Fernandez-Clark is a 7x Ironman finisher, Chair, and co-founder of Women in Tri UK, a charity on a mission to bring more women into triathlon and break down barriers in the sport. With no background in sport, Bianca laced up her trainers at age 29 to tackle a 10km as a way to manage her mental health. From there, she progressed to marathons and, in 2016, took on the challenge of learning to swim and cycle to complete her first triathlon. As a Black/mixed-race woman, Bianca has been vocal about the lack of diversity in triathlon, especially at long-distance events, and has worked to highlight the barriers faced by the Black community in accessing swimming.  In 2022, she co-founded Women in Tri UK, and the organisation has been growing ever since, working hard to make triathlon more inclusive and accessible for women everywhere. By day, Bianca works full-time in the financial sector, but every spare moment is dedicated to continuing her own triathlon journey and supporting the work of Women in Tri UK. ***  New episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast drop every Tuesday at 7 AM (UK time)! Make sure to subscribe so you never miss the inspiring journeys and incredible stories of tough women pushing boundaries.  Do you want to support the Tough Girl Mission to increase the amount of female role models in the media in the world of adventure and physical challenges? Support via Patreon! What happens when our young boys have positive, male role models? They learn the lessons of respect, kindness and equity. Let's talk about this vital topic today. In this episode I am sharing a personal story. My son is 8 and he plays football (soccer) with his mates three times a week. Not only is he improving his football skills, he is also cementing his learning to be a good kid - and ultimately a good man. How? Because the lead coach at his club is a natural leader and one who (seemingly) effortlessly earns the respect of the other coaches, the kids and the parents. This is such an important topic and one I hope you'll listen to til the end. Mental load, burnout, and imposter syndrome create a perfect storm that significantly contributes to the gender pay gap. In this episode, we delve into some very concerning statistics from the 2024 Imposter Syndrome Research Study that show how these issues disproportionately affect women, leading to chronic stress and limiting their career growth. The research highlights that over half of female employees are 'very concerned' about burnout, and 31% are at 'high risk'. Many are being driven to exhaustion by a combination of Imposter Syndrome coping strategies, impossible workloads, too many meetings, and juggling household responsibilities alongside their professional lives. This episode challenges the cultural assumptions that still exist in workplaces, including the outdated notion that leadership roles are designed for people with housewives. Join Clare as she explores actionable steps to address these systemic and cultural issues and shares practical solutions for a more equitable work environment for everyone. What We'll Cover:The combination of mental load, burnout, and imposter syndrome is fuelling the gender pay gap.Women face a unique perfect storm of challenges that make it harder for them than for men to get promoted.Mental load often falls disproportionately on women, creating chronic stress, limiting their career growth, and forcing them to quit jobs they love. The problem with flexible working when you get promoted, and how this is driving the gender pay gap and lack of equity in leadership roles.Men play a key role in changing the conversation about this in the workplace. How we need to rethink what 'allyship' really means. Why organisations need to rewrite the rules on how work works, no longer designing senior positions that rely on outdated assumptions about domestic responsibilities.Resources For This Episode:Get the white paper here - www.impostersyndromeresearch.comHow is Imposter Syndrome impacting your organisation? Lauren Wesley Wilson: What Do You Need? Lauren Wesley Wilson is a leading thought leader on media relations, diversity and inclusion, and crisis communications. At 25, she became the founder and CEO of ColorComm Corporation. Prior to that, Lauren worked as a communications strategist at a prestigious crisis communications firm in Washington, D.C. Lauren has been featured in The Washington Post, Forbes, and People, as well as on MSNBC and CNBC, and more. She has been recognized by PR Week's 50 Most Powerful in PR, Ad Age's Women to Watch, and New York Women in Communications. She is the author of What Do You Need?: How Women of Color Can Take Ownership of Their Careers to Accelerate Their Path to Success*. Many of us wish to be good allies in the workplace, especially to those who are underrepresented. Yet, what we assume that means isn't always what's most wanted or needed. In this conversation, Lauren and I discuss what leaders and peers can do to be better allies. Key Points Instead of asking “How can I help?” consider, “What do you need?” That's more likely to generate specific actions. Women of color feel like they are putting in tons of work into relationships with the majority culture, but it often feels unreciprocated. White folks think of allyship as speaking out against discrimination. Women of color say it's way more critical to advocate for new opportunities. Tie allyship to economic goals: conference attendance, nominations for recognition, inclusion on high-profile committees, and position/promotion considerations. Make invitations to people of color to be at the table. This contributes more substantially than proclamations of support. When you make a mistake, apologize, own it, and move on. Don't tell a story to explain yourself. Are you aware of how your biases—both conscious and unconscious—impact your investment decisions? Brie Williams of State Street Global Advisors joins me in this conversation to talk not only about the impact of biases on decision-making but how to cultivate an awareness of your biases to change your behavior, ultimately leading to better decisions.  You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... [1:33] Brie's role at State Street Global Advisors [3:33] The role of emotion in decision-making [7:00] How your mindset can influence behavior  [11:15] Common investor biases that influence decisions [19:05] Ways you can manage your biases [23:36] How to overcome anchoring bias [30:38] Embracing resilience as an investor  Common investor biases that influence decisions What are the most common biases that impact decision-making? Most can be grouped into cognitive and emotional biases. Hindsight bias, confirmation bias, and anchoring bias are typically the most impactful cognitive biases in the realm of finance. Hindsight bias occurs when an investor tends to believe that after an event occurred that they predicted it. So when the market crashes they claim they “knew” it was going to happen.  Confirmation bias is the tendency to seek out information that confirms an existing belief, often accompanied by ignoring contradictory information.  Anchoring occurs when you rely too heavily on an initial piece of information and you anchor future decisions to that piece of information (i.e. you anchored to the price you bought a stock at). Emotional biases stem from impulses or intuitions, heavily influenced by feelings. Examples are loss aversion and overconfidence.  Loss aversion happens when an individual feels the pain of a loss far more intensely than the pleasure of gains. It might manifest by holding on to a stock too long hoping that it will rebound (but selling would be the rational choice). Overconfidence is a bias where an investor has an inflated belief in their ability to predict a market movement or winning investments. You're likely to lean on your research while ignoring the things you can't control, like changing market conditions. We need to recognize that we all have conscious and unconscious biases. We need to gain self-awareness to reflect on how we approached past decisions. Self-reflection allows us to uncover blind spots and recognize patterns in decision-making. Brie points out this is always easier to do with an objective advisor.  How to overcome anchoring bias Anchoring bias comes into play when you're failing to adjust to new information. Do you have a sunnier outlook or focus on the more negative side of the equation? You have to recognize that your life view will impact your definition of success. You need to focus on objectivity when you come across new information so you don't overweight the past.  Mindset is just one factor of many that will shape your decisions and perceptions as an investor. How do you respond? Anchoring exists as a bias but it can be disrupted with practice. Mindfulness and how you approach decision-making is worth working on for a healthier construct for decision-making.  How do you avoid analysis paralysis? How can we close our behavior gap to improve decision-making to achieve better outcomes? In this episode, Johanna talks with repeat guest and one of our favorite sports journalists, Frankie de la Cretaz, about their incisive piece for The Nation, "How Women's Swimming got so Transphobic." Per Frankie's research, "Almost no other sport is as hostile to trans athletes - and that's because its culture created the perfect conditions for transphobia to take root." Frankie first discusses the confluence of 3 main factors upon which the sport's dangerous transphobia has emerged: the sport's whiteness and related anti-Blackness, its history of rampant mainly cisgender heterosexual white men's sexual abuse of mainly cishet white girls and women, and the East German state doping program against its female swimmers during the Cold War. The sport's whiteness is not just a dangerous condition that impacts many people today (check out our 2020 episodes with Kevin Dawson and Matt Hodler if you haven't already); people also use it as a shield to claim that swimming "doesn't have a race problem" in a way that gives foundation to denying cishet Black female swimmers as well as trans women their gender. The invocation of the GDR's doping scandal for transphobia is a misappropriation of East German women's suffering that inaccurately denigrates their experiences and silences trans girls' and women's experiences today too. We also talk about USA Swimming's use of white women on its staff as a possible cover for its sexual abuse history, and how cishet white women are always the main beneficiaries of "diversity" schemes due to their proximity to the white patriarchy. Frankie moreover details the challenges they encountered in finding an outlet that would accept their pitch, and contextualizes the sport's transphobia compared to how other sports are responding to anti-trans activity. Johanna ends with a call to action to fellow cishet white women to directly challenge transphobic rhetoric and policies as they support the resurgence of violent fascism and its attempted genocide of transgender people today.  Read the Sports Illustrated piece that Frankie mentioned about Lia Thomas here.

Ep #130: How Women are Redefining the Economy with Katrine MarçalThere's a belief in economics that self-interest is the thing that motivates economic activity. But what if that's…wrong? I know YOU want the title, the pay increase, and the recognition. And sure, that IS self-interest. And that's great. But we both know that you want so much more than that. You want to land the promotion AND you want to be the corporate badass who brings more diversity to the leadership table. Because women like you aren't interested only in self-interest. You're interested in being part of something so much bigger than that, too. As a world-renowned author and thought leader on women and innovation, Katrine Marçal, says in this episode of Maximize Your Career with Stacy Mayer: “When you add women to the story of economics and stir it around, the whole narrative changes.” In this episode, we get raw and real about how to bring more women into the conversation around money and economics.Join us inside my group coaching intensive, Executive Ahead of Time.

Have you ever considered the consequences of focusing so heavily on women and girls' confidence, or lack thereof? If women and girls are excluded from certain spaces and careers, or don't negotiate salaries, or struggle to ask for what they want in a relationship, the solution is often: “She just needs more confidence…She needs to believe in herself more!” On this week's pod, Shaunna and Lisa discuss their views on the harm created by an over-emphasis on women and girls' confidence and how it obscures the systemic nature of their inequality. In a culture so dedicated to individualism, “leaning-in,” and working hard, it is all too easy to focus on the need for women and girls to change something internally rather than on the traps inherent in the various systems they encounter. Whether employment, family, or sport, it isn't always a lack of confidence that holds women and girls back. This episode was inspired by the article https://www.theatlantic.com/culture/archive/2022/03/limits-women-confidence-workplace-inequality/626562/ (How Women's  Confidence Became a Cult) in The Atlantic, published March 7, 2022 by https://www.theatlantic.com/author/shani-orgad/ (Shani Orgad) and https://www.theatlantic.com/author/rosalind-gill/ (Rosalind Gill). To his "fellow servants" Joseph and Oliver the angel John, acting under direction from the Lord, gave power to further the work of the Lord. Similarly today, the Lord gives His "fellow servants"--both women and men--power to accomplish the work He calls them to do. In our study this week we ask the question: what is the power the Lord has given me, and what does He expect me to do with it. In this episode we get a bit personal and focus on the truths we would help our own young daughter understand as she seeks for her own answers to these important questions. Show Notes: Linda K.
