Jason welcomes Daniel Solis, art director at WizKids as well as Chris Cieslik from Asmadi Games to chat about the future of AI art in board gaming. Job creating or job apocalypse? New promises, or seven fingered crap? We answer many questions and offer new ones to think about.
Welcome to our year-end eleganza extravaganza! Lists are compiled. Harsh truths confronted. For example, while one generally takes a while to acclimatize to the using the new year in dates, 2022 seemed immediately apt and people switched over effortlessly. 2023 still seems weird, though--as evidenced by the fact that we forgot to change our tags for our 2023 episodes thus far! How embarrassing.Games Played Last Week:01:32 -Good Puppers (Chris Cieslik, Asmadi Games, 2021)03:21 -Woodcrafters (Ross Arnold and Vladimír Suchý, Delicious Games, 2022)06:55 -Robotech: Reconstruction (Dr. Wictz, Strange Machine Games, 2023) 12:59 -Black Rose Wars (Marco Montanaro, Ludus Magnus Studio, 2019)18:46 -Ankh: Gods of Egypt--Pharaoh (Erc M. After much popular demand, we present to you the much-anticipated return of Masterpiece Theatre. Our esteemed patron--who is utterly unaware of our existence, such is his focus on his twin demesnes of fastness and furiousness--deserves no less. Of course, should His Grace, the Reverend Doktor Doktor Vincent, Duke of Diesel, Esq. O.B.E. ever condescend to acknowledge us plebs, we would no doubt swoon from appreciation. Walker has yet to inform us what agenda the aliens are pursuing in Argentina during their relentless campaign of cow abduction. Do the alien overlords practise colonialism in the same way as their human counterparts? Do the inscrutable extraterrestrials differentiate between different humans, perhaps much as they differentiate between cows? Are their secret machinations behind the British East India Company as well? Walker, what are you hiding!01:54 AYURIS: Faiyum (Friedemann Friese, 2F-Spiele, 2020)Games Played Last Week:05:22 -Spire's End: Hildegard (Greg Favro, Favro Ventures, LLC., 2022)07:36 -Innovation (Carl Chudyk, Asmadi Games, 2010)07:44 -A Feast for Odin (Uwe Rosenberg, Feuerland Spiele, 2016)07:50 -Jetpack Joyride: Deluxe Edition (Michał Gołębiowski, Lucky Duck Games, 2019)08:12 -Ankh: Gods of Egypt (Eric M. Say what you want about the evils of filthy lucre, but I find it amazing how managers turn communitarian and high-minded when it comes to fair remuneration. "Don't you believe in the project?" "Aren't you committed to the team?" et al get deployed all the time when people want to, you know, get compensated for their work. One can't help but notice that racialized workers and women get subjected to such nonsense at a higher-than-average rate. Volunteerism is noble and good, but stiffing workers is not. When someone is trying to elide the difference, you can bet that they're up to something.Games Played Last Week:01:12 -Wonderland's War (Tim Eisner, Ben Eisner, & Ian Moss, Druid City Games, 2022)04:36 -Fantasy Realms: Deluxe Edition (Bruce Galssco, WizKids, 2022)08:55 -Lands of Galzyr (Seppo Kuukasjärvi and Sami Laakso, Snowdale Design, 2022)12:12 -Horizons of Spirit Island (R. "Planned obsolescence" is not just an economic term, it is a way of life for some companies. It is the practice of deliberately making a sold item frail or of limited use until it is unfashionable; this forces the consumer to replace it sooner than they would otherwise. Analysts tell us that it is best deployed by oligopolies to increase their sales volume. Completely unrelatedly, we talk about Games Workshop in the news.Games Played Last Week:01:26 -Mindbug (Skaff Elias, Richard Garfield, Marvin Hegen, & Christian Kudahl, Nerdlab Games, 2021)03:36 -Ticket to Ride: Germany (Alan R. It was a thrill to have a pan-Anglo alliance together to raise money for Food Banks Canada, with many current or prior Commonwealth countries represented either on the stream or in the donations. That is globalism we can get behind here at SVWAG. That said, let us make our next planned fundraising endeavour yet more international: a Kickstarter campaign to fund Mark's acquisition of a Ferrari Portofino. NB: "Language independent" can be a loaded term, and we confess we used it a tad sloppily in our discussion of Tribune. Latin is used throughout the game, and ain't nobody speaks Latin as their first language anymore, but nonetheless in hindsight we could have been more sensitive to those more familiar with non-Latin alphabets. Thus, we should say that the original Primus Inter Pares expansion and the new Spielworxx Tribune are language-independent but not alphabet-independent. I dare any game with an appropriate time period as a theme try to get away with cuneiform. If Walker doesn't want Mark to speak to excess, he really shouldn't be teeing him up by asking about Macross. Or Robotech either, because the difference thereto is a whole discussion unto itself. Of course, Walker is an accomplished troll, willing to return to any subject once raised. Mark has repeatedly been exhorted to not feed trolls, but really, that's just blaming the victim. At this point it's mostly just mutual trolling, like an ouroboros of nonsense. Walker's got this friend with a problem--not Walker, no not at all, a friend, you see, his name is... Bike Docker... and Bike has this problem that he judges a game by its cover art. Mike I mean Bike is so blinded by his prejudice that it causes him to rag on games like El Grande or GMT's entire catalog just because the cover doesn't appeal to his sensibilities. There are so many life lessons to be learned from the presidency of Richard Milhous Nixon. For one, shave before debates. For another, hire limber secretaries with flexible standards on truth. Always be sure to hire expert lockpickers. Make sure your vice president will have your back (Nixon at least got a mulligan on that one). Lauren talks to Alanna Cervenak of Asmadi Games (https://twitter.com/AsmadiGames) about One Deck Dungeon (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/179275/one-deck-dungeon) and One Deck Dungeon: Forest of Shadows (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/224821/one-deck-dungeon-forest-shadows). Special Guest: Alanna Cervenak.
Alanna Cervenak of Asmadi Games (1001 Odysseys) and Christopher Badell of Greater Than Games (Sentinel Comics: The Roleplaying Game) discuss the many roles and duties in game development, and how stressful it can be to just let someone else do their dang job. We also have an in-depth discussion about our many horrible adopted cats, which was fully unrelated and entirely delightful.

Jason chats with Chris Cieslik and Julia Urquhart from Asmadi Games about one of his most anticipated games for 2019 - 1001 Odysseys! We've talked about it before during our PAX Unplugged recap episodes. For this Preview Series, we really blow it out and get under the hood with this cooperative story telling game. If you liked Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, this is the game for you! We get into the very simple mechanisms here, how they directly answer to some of the other storytelling and Choose Your Own Adventure games that came before. However, when you try to solve design problems, you might create new ones. Jason gets into some critical issues that might arise from such a simple, open-ended system, such as retaining the ability of players to make meaningful choices. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/asmadigames/513161662

Mark has recommended it to him, but apparently Walker's contempt for his co-host's opinions is not limited to games, but extends also to the podcast they produce together about games. As it happens, games do not spawn ex nihilo, fully armed and armored from Zeus' forehead. I'm certain that's what most of you believed, but it's not true! Jenny and her mother Shannon (of STG 10 fame!) deliver an after-action report on Save Against Fear 2017, held Oct. 13-15 in Harrisburg, PA! Everyone had a great time, and the con was exceptionally well-run and definitely worth attending next year. Some specific shoutouts: First, to our former co-host Branden, who was in attendance and ran a fantastic Mistborn game! Also to the Harrisburg Mall for providing an excellent con space; Harrisburg University's game design program; and of course to The Bodhana Group for putting on a great con and continuing to be wonderful people doing good for hurting people. The guys dive into one of Nathan's favorite geek topics: board games, also called tabletop games. Chris and Dallas ask him how he got started with gaming, talk about the different kinds of tabletop games, and discuss some of their favorites. They share their thoughts on the community-building aspects of gaming, and help listeners with where they can find games. In this episode I review One Deck Dungeon from Asmadi Games.
One Deck Dungeon is a roguelike RPG card game from Asmadi Games. As a gift to their kickstarter contributors, an album of SNES style RPG songs was commissioned to provide background ambience for the dungeon crawling adventures. I was heavily inspired by the SquareSoft SNES-era RPGs such as Secret of Mana and FF6. This album was a lot of fun and I did some experimental things such as a 13/4 time signature (Hydra's Swamp) and alternate soft versions of each song. Its pay what you want on Bandcamp. Please enjoy! https://asmadigames.bandcamp.com/album/one-deck-dungeon 2020 Creative Commons CC Attribution Noncommercial No Derivative Works (BY-NC-ND)

In Episode 33, Craig dives into three games that showed up on his doorstep thanks to the magic of Kickstarter. All three games are 2015 releases and have shown up within the past month or so which means he has fought hard to get several plays of each game to bring them to your attention, dear listener. First Craig talks about Vault Wars, the auction game from Floodgate Games, then he digs in the latest installment of the Tiny Epic line from Gamelyn Games, Tiny Epic Galaxies, and he finally wraps us with his newest game obsession, Mottainai, from Asmadi Games. Show Times: Vault Wars (Floodgate Games): 7:00 Tiny Epic Galaxies (Gamelyn Games): 26:00 Mottainai (Asmadi Games): 39:00

No cats were harmed during the recording of this episode. Official SVWAG cat Chandler (aka Potato aka Chan-Chan aka The Chan-Man) had his dignity challenged when Mark laughed at his strange partially-shaved body, but we don't think that counts. Official SVWAG dog Bruno (aka The Dog) resents human non-walk activities, but again, that probably doesn't count. The editorial gibbons and the HR gibbons colluded to classify Mark and Walker as "sub-animal automated speakboxes" and then took Labour Day off.Games Played Last Week:01:10 -Marshmallow Test (Reiner Knizia, Gamewright, 2020)03:30 -Amun-Re: 20th Anniversary Edition (Reiner Knizia, Alley Cat Games, 2023)05:52 -Everything Ever (Nathan Thornton, Floodgate Games, 2023)10:28 -Sushi Boat (Dario Massarenti and Francesco Testini, Japanime Games, 2023)14:49 -Fit to Print (Peter McPherson, Flatout Games, 2023)20:58 -That's Not a Hat (Kasper Lapp, Ravensburger, 2023)22:18 -Lunar Rush (Steven "Skippy" Brown, Dead Alive Games, 2023)29:03 -Aegean Sea (Carl Chudyk, Asmadi Games, 2023)37:16 -Lacuna (Mark Gerrits, CMYK, 2023)News (and why it doesn't matter):39:08 Snow Planner--dice worker-placement ski resort39:48 Rats of Wistar by Simone Luciani and Danilo Sabia41:09 David Thompson and Nils Johansson's Battle Card42:46 Apology--Aegean Sea cannot be a feature game43:45 Feature Game: Race to the Raft (Frank West, The City of Games, 2023)Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
I was originally going to riff on Ginsberg's Howl, but I confess I had completely forgotten what a monster of a piece it is--redolent in imagery and references that are very much of a time since past. I considered then moving on to Nelson's On the Road Again, and faced the opposite problem--man, that song has some simple lyrics. I guess Shelley and Shakespeare are the sweet spot. 01:24 AYURIS: Praga Caput Regni (Vladimír Suchý, Delicious Games, 2020)Games Played Last Week:03:56 -Shadowrift (Jeremy Anderson, Game Salute, 2012)06:41 -Jetpack Joyride: Deluxe Edition (Michał Gołębiowski, Lucky Duck Games, 2019)10:18 -Barcelona (Dani Garcia, Board&Dice, 2023)14:22 -Regicide (Paul Abrahams, Luke Badger, & Andy Richdale, Badgers from Mars, 2020)17:17 -Project: ELITE (Konstantinos Kokkinis, Sotirios Tsantilas, Artipia Games, 2016)20:33 -Ready Set Bet (John D. Perhaps the greatest lingering question is how and why the Ethnos fantasy races were translated into academic professions for Archeos Society's re-theme. Apparently dwarves (Ethnos) are analogous to photographers (Archeos Society), and orcs (orc board!) are akin to curators. Odd. Halflings into students seems appropriately condescending. As much as the comparison stings, though, I can't teally object into making trolls professors. I've met some that truly fit the description.Games Played Last Week:03:07 -Race to the Raft (Frank West, The City of Games, 2023)08:08 -Dorfromantik: The Board Game (Michael Palm and Lukas Zach, Pegasus Spiele, 2022)14:30 -Too Many Bones: Dart (Adam Carlson & Josh J.
