Walker has yet to inform us what agenda the aliens are pursuing in Argentina during their relentless campaign of cow abduction. Do the alien overlords practise colonialism in the same way as their human counterparts? Do the inscrutable extraterrestrials differentiate between different humans, perhaps much as they differentiate between cows? Are their secret machinations behind the British East India Company as well? Walker, what are you hiding!01:54 AYURIS: Faiyum (Friedemann Friese, 2F-Spiele, 2020)Games Played Last Week:05:22 -Spire's End: Hildegard (Greg Favro, Favro Ventures, LLC., 2022)07:36 -Innovation (Carl Chudyk, Asmadi Games, 2010)07:44 -A Feast for Odin (Uwe Rosenberg, Feuerland Spiele, 2016)07:50 -Jetpack Joyride: Deluxe Edition (Michał Gołębiowski, Lucky Duck Games, 2019)08:12 -Ankh: Gods of Egypt (Eric M. Say what you want about the evils of filthy lucre, but I find it amazing how managers turn communitarian and high-minded when it comes to fair remuneration. "Don't you believe in the project?" "Aren't you committed to the team?" et al get deployed all the time when people want to, you know, get compensated for their work. One can't help but notice that racialized workers and women get subjected to such nonsense at a higher-than-average rate. Volunteerism is noble and good, but stiffing workers is not. When someone is trying to elide the difference, you can bet that they're up to something.Games Played Last Week:01:12 -Wonderland's War (Tim Eisner, Ben Eisner, & Ian Moss, Druid City Games, 2022)04:36 -Fantasy Realms: Deluxe Edition (Bruce Galssco, WizKids, 2022)08:55 -Lands of Galzyr (Seppo Kuukasjärvi and Sami Laakso, Snowdale Design, 2022)12:12 -Horizons of Spirit Island (R. The Smart Car was truly out-of-the-box thinking. "Why do passenger cars all have to be the way they are?" asked some clever group of designers, and designed the minimalistic teensy Smart Car. Of course, the challenges posed by manufacturing the little thing, or driving the little thing on a highway, or walking away from a crash in the little thing, proved to be compelling arguments in favour of more traditional passenger car manufacture. What I'm saying is that sometimes the box exists for a reason, notwithstanding the virtues of experimentation. Mark had to reign himself in considerably this week, what with the song temptations of the Talking Heads followed by his favourite torch song teased by Welcome to the Moon. He also tried to workshop a Gourds of Atlantis joke, but responses were--to put it mildly--not encouraging. It wasn't a total loss, as he managed to sneak in some Norse mythology in Telestrations. It is a strange thing for one's hobby to be utterly infused with a nominally competitive structure. I would venture to say that knitters, for instance, devote precious little thought as to whether they can knit more or less well than their fellow crafters. Perhaps it is different for scrapbookers, I don't know, they seem like a ruthless lot.01:16 AYURIS: Aristeia! I mean, if Justices Breyer and/or Alito heard us impugn their oracular insights, no doubt we would be put on blast; much like those terrible journalists for having the sheer gall to posit that judges are, well, human and all. Perish the thought! We also apologize for suggesting that textualism does not ineffably guide one to the True and Correct Opinion, just like it did in Bostock, where textualist methods gave you at least three competing interpretations.01:05 AYURIS: Clinic Deluxe Edition (Alban Viard, AVStudioGames, 2019)Games Played Last Week:03:40 -Tinners' Trail (Martin Wallace, Alley Cat Games, 2021)07:09 -Merchants of Amsterdam (Reiner Knizia, Rio Grande Games, 2000) 10:59 -Merchants Cove (Jonny Pac, Carl Van Ostrand, & Drake Villareal, Final Frontier Games, 2021)13:26 -Ra (Reiner Knizia, alea, 1999)15:17 -Isle of Cats (Frank West, The City of Games, 2019)17:52 -For Science! A serious game for serious gamers that defies expectations in the best possible way. Here's an admission, we were a bit nervous to cover this game and its mammoth decision space. As we explored the game in preparation for this episode, t felt as if no amount of plays would be enough, but perhaps more than anything else that is a testament to the game and engine at its heart. At the end of the day, we give it our best shot! I think you'll find it worth a listen. There's only one way to find out though, and the Interdecisional spaceship is now boarding! It was a thrill to have a pan-Anglo alliance together to raise money for Food Banks Canada, with many current or prior Commonwealth countries represented either on the stream or in the donations. That is globalism we can get behind here at SVWAG. That said, let us make our next planned fundraising endeavour yet more international: a Kickstarter campaign to fund Mark's acquisition of a Ferrari Portofino. Walker's got this friend with a problem--not Walker, no not at all, a friend, you see, his name is... Bike Docker... and Bike has this problem that he judges a game by its cover art. Mike I mean Bike is so blinded by his prejudice that it causes him to rag on games like El Grande or GMT's entire catalog just because the cover doesn't appeal to his sensibilities. Luckily, there are enlightened people like Mike Walker to guide those like Bike Docker. 01:33 AYURIS: Tapestry (Jamey Stegmaier, Stonemaier Games, 2019)Games Played Last Week:03:09 -Street Masters: Aftershock (Adam Sadler & Brady Sadler, Blacklist Games, 2019)04:38 -Fast & Furious: Highway Heist (Prospero Hall, Funko Games, 2021)11:46 -Imperium: The Contention (Gary Dworetsky, Contention Games, 2021)15:23 -Four Gardens (Martin Doležal, Korea Boardgames, 2020)18:12 -A Game of Thrones: The Board Game (Second Edition) (Christian T. Clearly the hosts secretly wanted to have a movie podcast, or perhaps just a podcast devoted to the movie Aliens. To their credit, they at least did not devolve into merely parroting quotes from the film, which is a behaviour as obnoxious and it is difficult to avoid. Hey Now Cabalists! Episode 210 starts out with a little bit of a bummer as we discuss how sad we are the Origins Game Fair won’t be happening this year but before too long, we jump into talking about some great games we've been playing including; Wingspan, Bumuntu, Fields of Green, Tapestry, Lockup: A Roll Player Tale, Claustrophobia 1643 and Small World. Then Don and Jamie jump into a feature review of Spirit Island from Greater Than Games and designed by R. Eric Reuss. Tony T collects and delivers a bonkers series of news articles and currently running Kickstarter projects while the gang chirps in the background. Then finally the Founders discuss various elements of gaming etiquette and the social contract with playing board games. Fatherhood is the overall theme of this week's episode. Imagine Harry Chapin's Cat's in the Cradle, except with the father played by Vladimir the Great and the son by Svyatopolk the Accursed. "When you coming home, dad?" asks the Accursed, to which the reply is "I don't know when. But we'll get together then, son." And then, the son allegedly murders several of his siblings in a vicious power struggle. Just like in the song! Folk music of the seventies is more bloodthirsty than many people recall. You do you, Walker always says, except he almost never does. Mark always says smoke 'em if you got 'em, despite his never uttering those words and frankly not knowing what they mean. He tried smoking once and didn't enjoy it. Why care about such petty things as truth or data when it feels consistent with a narrative you're peddling? You do you, Walker always says, except he almost never does. Mark always says smoke 'em if you got 'em, despite his never uttering those words and frankly not knowing what they mean. He tried smoking once and didn't enjoy it. Why care about such petty things as truth or data when it feels consistent with a narrative you're peddling? Echoes of contemporary politics abound, as we ponder whether a game needs to be balanced so long as it tells a good tale.AYURIS: Rising Sun (Eric Lang, CMON, 2018) 5m26sGames Played Last Week: -Cerebria: The Inside World 8m57s (Richard Amann, Viktor Peter, István Pócsi, Frigyes Schőberl, Nick Shaw, & Dávid Turczi, Mindclash Games, 2018)-Teotihuacan: City of Gods 11m22s (Daniele Tascini, NSKN Games, 2018)-Spirit Island 12m10s (R. We are happy to be joined again by three designers of excellent games with non-traditional themes - Elizabeth Hargrave, designer of Wingspan; Sarah Reed, designer of Oaxaca: Crafts of a Culture; and R. Eric Reuss, designer of Spirit Island.  In this half of the conversation we consider some larger picture questions that arise from their games. They share thoughts on how much background research went into all of their games, and also how they address the issue of problematic depictions of different cultures in games. Finally, we tackle the difficult issue of representation in the game designer and publisher communities. We hope this conversation sheds more light than heat, and that folks with lots of different perspectives can learn from it.

Happy New Years, everyone! Our number one wish here at ENGN is to get more and more games that color outside of the lines, so to speak. New and different games makes the gaming hobby better all around.  To that end, we gathered three designers of games with very non-traditional themes to share their thoughts - Elizabeth Hargrave, designer of Wingspan; Sarah Reed, designer of Oaxaca: Crafts of a Culture; and R. Eric Reuss, designer of Spirit Island.  For this first part of the conversation, we consider questions about tying theme and mechanisms, selling games that don't have zombies and Cthulhu all over them, and some of the weirdest themes we've ever heard of. Thank you to some folks from the 1 Player Guild on BGG for providing excellent questions!

Marc, Orion, and Matt sit down with Eric Reuss, designer of Spirit Island. This is one of our longest podcasts ever, but it might be our best ever. Eric was a delightful conversationalist, and we learned so much about the design and lore of Spirit Island. We were absolutely amazed to hear about all of the thought and work that went into the design. There's so much going on underneath the surface that you only see glimpses of in the game itself. I think you'll be equally enthralled. Music: Sailing The Solar Wind by Abstraction Like the podcast? Want to watch it being recorded, live? Consider supporting it on Patreon.

It is a truth universally acknowledged in eurogames that every famous historical man (it's almost always a man, of course) had a retinue of about 2-5 hangers-on whose sole job was to impress him. They did this mostly by doing stuff he did; maybe after he did them, maybe running states he conquered, maybe even by doing the stuff he was credited with. Their names are lost to antiquity. All we know is that they liked solid colours, and that the famous dude was most impressed with one of them. Games Played Last Week:00:54 -Lacrimosa (Gerard Ascendi and Ferran Renalias, Devir, 2022)06:30 -Tapple (Uncredited, The Op Games, 2021)07:48 -Forests of Pangaia (Thomas Franken, Pangaia Games, 2022)09:48 -Wizards of the Grimoire (Cole Banning and Joe Banning, Grimoire Games, 2022)12:46 -Sentinels of the Multiverse (Christopher Badell, Paul Bender, & Adam Rebottaro, Greater Than Games, 2011)16:51 -So Clover! Some randomness is accepted nearly uncritically by many gamers. Conventional deckbuilders have exceptionally high variance as a rule, but no one bats an eye. We accept that anything martial might have mixed results, even after repeated attempts--in fact, many protest when the wound-making is too deterministic. Tiles from a bag? Sure.
