Des Bishop! Comedian! Author! Polyglot! Delight! Des is a super funny comic and here is the proof in the form of nice things that have been said about him and it: “Funny, erudite and effortlessly delivered.” - The Scotsman “Charismatic, sincere, eloquent and always seeking the angle.”- Chortle “Fast paced and clever. A sure-fire winner.” - The Sunday Age, Melbourne Des Bishop's new comedy special, Of All People, is an hour of original stand-up and a culmination of years of experience on stage all over including in Queens, Ireland, and China. Bishop crafts high-energy stories and jokes, bringing the audience on a wildly entertaining ride through tales of his international travels and the gap between his looks and attitude. The openness and honesty of his presenting style combined with his restless imagination and perceptive observations make Des Bishop a must-see for fans of unique, insightful and provocative comedy. Des's material often focuses on cultural differences he noticed being a transplant into Irish Society from Queens, NY at a young age. He always incorporates a lot of material about language. He is likely the only comic many of us will see doing some of the set in Mandarin and some in Irish, which he learned so he could do comedy while living in China and Ireland. He spent 1 year in China to learn Mandarin and 1 year in Ireland to learn Irish, and he's done 60 minutes of comedy in both languages. And he remains an international presence, with a home and massive career in Ireland, and a life in the United States. Of All People is the third hour from Des Bishop. You can see the special as of Oct 22, 2024, on the 800 Pound Gorilla Media YouTube channel and comedy hub. About Des Bishop: Now a massive star in Ireland, native New Yorker Des Bishop moved from Queens to Ireland in his mid-teens in 1990. The openness and honesty of his presenting style combined with his restless imagination and perceptive comic observations make Des Bishop a must-see for fans of unique, insightful and provocative comedy. He came to Irish fame with TV shows, The Des Bishop Work Experience (2004), where he lived on minimum wage working different jobs in Ireland, Joy In The Hood, where he taught stand-up comedy in disadvantaged areas of four major Irish cities, and In The Name Of The Fada (2008, winner of the IFTA Best TV Series Award) about when he decided to learn Irish from scratch and perform a 60-minute stand-up comedy routine in the Irish language. In 2010, Des wrote his most personal show called My Dad Was Nearly James Bond, inspired by his father, Mike who was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Bishop won an Irish Book Of The Year Award for his memoir of the same name, and brought a solo show version to the Edinburgh Fringe to widespread acclaim and five-star reviews. In 2013, Bishop went to Beijing, China to learn Mandarin. He is now fluent and the show about his experience, Breaking China was another major hit series with another acclaimed Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Des has appeared on many live stand-up shows including Edinburgh Comedy Festival Live (BBC), Live at the Comedy Store (Comedy Central) and Australia's Spicks and Specks (ABC). "Humor is a way to deal with failure, because you'll be onto something much bigger. Nothing is the defining moment of your life — if you don't let it be.” Did you know that several P&G Alumni have become (inter)nationally known stand up comedians? In honor of World Laughter Day (May 1st), we decided to go deeper and chat with not one, not two, but THREE P&G alumni who are now full-time in the world of comedy — Greg Warren, Josh Sneed, and Rajiv Satyal. And if you count P&G Alumni Podcast co-host Drew Tarvin as a “Humor Engineer” - consider it 3.5 P&G Alumni Comedians. We want to learn about life as a creative entrepreneur, how humor applies to work, and how a business mindset can help anyone in their passion project - because when comedy is your day job, it's no joke. Ever thought about hiring random children to show up to your buddy's funeral and weep at the coffin while crying out Daddy? Or, have you considered who you would want as your celebrity groomsman or pallbearer? And, when you go to prison do you choose top bunk or bottom bunk? These questions and many more are answered by our guest, comedian Josh Sneed. A native of Cincinnati, Josh is forced to decide for which mascot he would trade the Queen City's beloved hippopotamus, Fiona, and whether Mark Twain was dissing Cincy when he suggested the city is always 20 years behind the times. Which product does he describe as the brown paper bag for middle class white men? Tune in to the episode to find out. Josh is an acclaimed, nationally touring comedian who has performed at famed festivals around the world such as the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal and the Aspen Comedy Festival. First Draft Episode #219: Janet Varney Janet Varney, Emmy-Nominated actor, comedian, writer, producer, and podcaster. She has appeared in dozens of TV shows, including You’re the Worst, Take My Wife, Burning Love, Stan Against Evil, and Fortune Rookie, and the voice of Korra in The Legend of Korra. She is also the co-founder, creative director, and producer of SF Sketchfest: the San Francisco Comedy Festival (now in its 19th year!), and hosts The JV Club podcast. Links and Topics Mentioned In This Episode Take the First Draft listener survey! David Owen and Cole Stratton were in a sketch group, Totally False People, with Janet Varney. Together the three of them founded SF Sketchfest, and continue to run the annual month-long comedy festival to this day Totally False People got asked to perform at the Aspen Comedy Festival, and Janet was scoped out by Mad TV Bruce McCullough, one of the members of influential sketch comedy group Kids in the Hall, is one of Janet’s closest friends. They met in Janet’s capacity as producer of Sketchfest One of Janet’s earlier roles was on Love, Inc., a Busy Phillips project about a matchmaker Janet was able to craft her character on Burning Love with the blessing of Ken Marino and Erica Oyama, creators of the movies Janet plays “Janet Varney” on her IFC show, Fortune Rookie Janet (and I) went through the Upright Citizens Brigade improv school, which is focused on “game” as opposed to iO West and The Groundlings, where comedians create broad characters. Matt Besser is one of the four founders of UCB. Janet was the voice of Korra in The Legend of Korra, the sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender (not for nothing, but I interviewed Michael DiMartino, co-creator of Avatar, and you can listen to that conversation here). Much like with Korra, I have read that the cast of Adventure Time recorded the show all in a room together. Janet’s podcast The JV Club is amazing! Check it out — you can start with my episode, if you like! Doug Benson’s podcast, Doug Loves Movies, and Jimmy Pardo’s podcast, Never Not Funny, were two comedy podcasts that were around when Janet started her own Pete Holmes’s You Made it Weird and Marc Maron’s WTF with Marc Maron are two long-form interview podcasts that inspired me to start First Draft Memento was a wildly original movie, but Janet argues that level of uniqueness should not be the standard all creators hold themselves to. Today’s guest, Brian Lohmann, has, yes, been on “American Body Shop,” “World Cup Comedy,” “Ask Rita,” and “Rugrats,” but what Brian’s really known for is his love of theater and improvisation. Impro Theatre, the company where he’s the associate artistic director, has performed at The Broad Stage, Aspen Comedy Festival, The Globe Playhouse in LA, and The Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Our podcast discussion gets a little “inside baseball,” as the saying goes, but we hit on how theatre makes you a more complete human, finding your passion, and, as Quincy Jones says, finding “your lightning, and ride your lightning.” It’s so worth a listen!

A self-confessed “sad, bearded white dude”, Kyle Kinane has more empathy than the next road warrior, and more bite than the next peddler of whimsy. He talks here about eschewing personality in favour of better jokes; cultivating talent rather than hustle; and how his failure at a big festival led him to discover a more worthwhile goal than wordplay. Rebecca Drysdale grew up in Versailles, France and Vancouver and Montreal, Canada, which makes her sound more like a line of designer clothing then a comedy writer, but comedy writer she is! For the fantastically funny Key and Peele show on Comedy Central. Rebecca attended Sarah Lawrence College for a minute, where she met her writing partner, none other than Jordan Peele himself, and subsequently moved to Chicago to pursue sketch comedy and improvisation. Rebecca is an Alum of Boom Chicago in Amsterdam, and The Second City Chicago, and in 2005 she won the first ever "Breakout Performer Award" at the Aspen Comedy Festival. Fortunately, she was willing to talk about all this and more as she takes us through her unique and what seems like exhausting path to her current state of being which includes the writing gig at Key and Peele as well as on screen appearances in the film Enough Said, Kroll Show, Key and Peele, and the upcoming season of Orange Is the New Black (a great show!) As if that wasn't enough, Rebecca also owns and runs the Clubhouse, an independent improv theatre in Hollywood. So go there! (listen on iTunes)

Andy Rocco (Monkeydick, Underground Americana, The Tony Show) came by and we talked a lot about Dirtiest Sketch Show in NYC, his 30 seconds in Aspen Comedy Festival, and so much more
This title refers to the fact that we're back to an all-clip show this week. No interviews (although we have a goodie coming up next week!) but I did want to thank everyone who commented, tweeted, emailed and otherwise gave me feedback on last week’s Epi51.5, my I-5 Extra Episode. It was experimental, really – just me recording me as I drove back to San Francisco from Los Angeles up Interstate 5. Maybe I’ll try it again on my next road trip. And it gives me the confidence to play a little bit more between clips of the regular podcast, so we’ll see where that goes. To the left is a shot of the sun setting as I trundled through the San Juaquin Valley at the wheel of Studio F, my Fiat 500. (It's not that picturesque but I post it because I love how pissed off people get when they think of me taking pictures while driving...) THE COUNTDOWN I mention in this episode that I'm thinking of dropping the Stitcher Top 10 Comedy Podcast Countdown that we've been featuring on Succotash since the beginning of the year. Reason? The shows just don't change positions enough to be very interesting. None of these, for instance, are unfamiliar: 10. Deathsquad 9. Doug Loves Movies 8. Real Time with Bill Maher 7. SModcast 6. The Nerdist 5. Mohr Stories 4. NPR: Car Talk Podcast 3. WTF with Marc Maron 2. The Adam Carolla Show 1. The Joe Rogan Experience On the other hand, for the first time I also read down the BOTTOM Ten of the Stitcher Comedy Podcasts. Lots of action and places being swapped down there in the cellar. So maybe I'll just do that from now on… 91. Beauty & Da Beast w/Joey Diaz & Felicia Michaels (down 10!) 92. Laugh Out Loud from CBC Radio (up 9!) 93. The Best Show on WFMU with Tom Scharpling 94. The Pod F. Tompkast 95. Walking The Room 96. The Ricky Gervais Podcast (down 13!) 97. Alonzo Bodden: Who's Paying Attention? (up 29!!!) 98. Dining With Doug & Karen (down 31!!!) 99. 76th Street Pod 100. #WeNerdHard DURST This episode our Ambassador to the Middle Will Durst ponders the ex-pontiff and what sort of mischief the former Pope Benedict might get into in his retirement. THE CLIPS JakeThis of Jake Johannsen Comedian Jake Johannsen's podcast is pure Jake. Even when he has guests, it’s got that "Jake" feel to it. I used to hang out with Jake and his guest this latest episode, Bobby Slayton, a lot, as we were all in the San Francisco comedy scene. They were both as the Aspen Comedy Festival recently and Bobby recounts part of a story from when he got to have dinner with Woody Allen. A.D.D. Comedy Podcast David Razowsky is the host, creative force, and backbone of the A.D.D. Comedy Podcast. Ian Foley is the producer and creator. They talk to a lot of comedians, most of whom have come out of the ranks of improv, but also actors and writers. We clip part of David's great interview with screenwriter Carl Gottlieb. Chillpak Hollywood Hour Friends-of-Succotash and podcast royalty Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness continue to fascinate with their Chillpak Hollywood Hour podcast. They get into X-Files memorabilia by way of an email from a listener in this clip. Oh, yes, and they still have a page on MySpace. Too Heavy Too Skydive Gotta clip in from the guys over at Too Heavy Too Skydive, which is still one of my favorite podcast titles out there. This is Matt's interview with Kai, no last name, who you may have seen on the internet a couple of weeks ago when he stopped a rampaging guy by pulling out a handaxe. Making New Friends Pat O’Rourke invites people into his kitchen every week and I guess gets along with all of them because his podcast is called Making New Friends. He sent this clip along and maybe I lost some notes along the way because, even though I checked the website, I’m not sure who his new friend may be. Sup Dude I THINK the Sup Dude podcast is from England so it kicks off our Triple Shot British Invasion clips this show. AJ & Nathan host a show about a bunch of stuff and yet seem to almost always have time to review a James Bond movie. Here they’re getting into Her Majesty’s Secret Service starring that one-off Bond, George Lazenby. It’s Not Soccer Adam Barker of Barker Podcasts is back with his It’s Not Soccer podcasting partner Billy Bilo. Adam didn’t send a clip but he did send where to find this clip in their lastest episode which, really, is the next best thing. It’s about a package delivery that happened to a friend that went south. Uncle Arthur’s Bollocks This clip is a last minute entry to this week’s show, suggested by the aforementioned Adam Barker who says that it’s a great representative of “north English humour”. I guess that’s humor with a “u” after the “r”, right? Uncle Arthur seems difficult to find a lot about so just enjoy his ranting about fat people, won’t you? Pod Awful Jesse P-S has kicked off Season 5 of his Pod Awful podcast. His guest, Mike Blejer, a comedian and host of his own podcast, Malignant Brain Humor, and he spend part of the kickoff episode trying to track down a fortune teller of sorts… Salty Language I’m not quite sure what the main thrust of the Salty Language podcast is about. I think it’s a “shootin’ the shit” show, with hosts Bryan, Tony & Tate doing just that. Here’s a chunk that spins off of reading a news item, so that should be a clue, right? Red Mud and Rolling Hills The Red Mud & Rolling Hills podcast is a sister/brother show, with Dawn Smith and her bro Bo Tate being real from the foothills of South Carolina. Their website proclaims that they use swear words as “sentence enhancers” and there is no shortage of them in the clip we have, where they’re talking about footwear and handsomeness. Once again, we've done our job. Now get out there and do yours: Pass the Succotash! — Marc Hershon
