San Francisco has such a rich history of comedy. No one can argue against that. In this bonus episode, meet SF Sketchfest co-founder and co-director Cole Stratton. I chatted with Cole about: his early days in Michigan and his and his mom's move to Davis, CA going to SF State, moving to The City meeting folks (David Owen and Janet Varney) with whom he later helped create Sketchfest how his desire to act drove him to Los Angeles, where he lives today the sketch crew he was in, which lead to the festival the 2002 launch of SF Sketchfest this year's 18-day event, which kicks off tonight! Go to SFSketchfest.com for tickets and more info. We recorded this podcast on Zoom in January 2025.

The 21st Annual SF Sketchfest is underway in San Francisco, bringing comedians, improv performers, writers and lots of chuckles together for over two weeks of shows: from literal sketches to musical performances and improvised Shakespeare, on stages big and small across the city. But, why San Francisco? In this episode of Bay Current, KCBS Radio's Mallory Somera sits down with SF Sketchfest co-founder Cole Stratton to talk about the comedy festival's run, what makes San Francisco a good audience and the legacy of “Nash Bridges.” For more Bay Area stories, subscribe to Bay Current on the Audacy app or wherever you get podcasts.
James Heaney and Cole Stratton swing by the nonexistent Super Legit studio to answer the question, “When do you lie?” We can't even pretend we recorded this one recently, but with talks about more strikes, it's deeply prescient! We get into social lies, parenting lies, inconsequential lies, and resume lies. We revisit a cop who's always got his pants down, a mother who will go to any length to keep her son at home, some truly terrible gifts, find out which cast members have definitely been watching And Just Like That…, and so much more! Invaluable comedian, actor and former podcaster Cole Stratton stops by to reminisce on how his comedienne friend Lorraine Newman is his neighbor, approaching make-up based acting, cancelling out internet trolls, how comedians get dramatic acting opportunities & memories of the legendary Robin Williams' appearances at his co-founded comedy festival, The San Francisco SketchFest! It all collides in grand fashion so don't miss an hour of this inspiring yet cheerful interview chat! Welcome to this milestone episode of our little soundcast, which is – this week – celebrating TEN YEARS of doing whatever it is that we do. It made only be Episode 248 (maybe we didn’t drop installments quite as regularly as we should have for a big chunk of the past decade…), but it is still 10 friggin’ years of churning out that sweet, sweet soundcast magic. In honor of that, and the fact that we seem to be solidly on the downward side of the bell-shaped curve coming out of the coronavirus pandemic, the staff and management of this show have decided to return to our original title. Starting with this episode we are, once again Succotash, The Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. As we flip the first page on the next ten years, this is also now officially Season 5 – a fact you should see reflected in the refreshed show logo on the service where you’re downloading or streaming this show. If you’re a regular listener to Succotash (in or out of pandemic mode), you‘re savvy to the fact that we either play clips from comedy soundcasts around the web or that we do interviews with soundcasts, comedians, comedian/soundcasts, and other show biz folk. Well, this episode is going to be a little different. In observance of our decade of soundcastery, we’ve gotten a little self-indulgent. For the first time since we began, we’ve actually pulled together host Tyson Saner, producer/engineer Joe Paulino, booth announcer Bill Heywatt, and me, your humble executive producer and other host Marc Hershon. We cobbled together a multi-studio experience through Zoom and spend about an hour and a quarter talking about the show’s origins, the various features we've done, how Tyson came to us in the early going and got folded into our team, and more. We re-hash a classic old Boozin’ with Bill segment, in which our announcer almost poisoned himself and me with a noxious concoction so hideous it should have been criminal. Bill also favors us with a live show introduction, a live show close, and a live reading of a commercial from our long-running sponsor Henderson’s Pants – it’s an announcement of their release of a new product in honor of this show’s anniversary, Henderson’s Anniversary Pants. We also take a few minutes out to pay homage and send out love and healing energies to political and social comedian and commentator Will Durst, longtime contributor to this show of our Burst O' Durst segment. Will suffered a severe stroke in the Fall of 2019 and is on the super-slow backroad to recovery. He's even getting back up a microphone now and again, and we play a little clip of his appearance from January on the San Francisco Points of View soundcast with Will Durst & Wille Brown. Will's recovery is a slow and expensive process. You can help out in a very real way by contributing to the GoFUndMe page that has been set up as way to collect money to offset his hospital bills: https://www.gofundme.com/f/awukk-will-durst-needs-your-help Finally, interspersed within the show, we play some audio bouquets – well wishes from friends we’ve made during the last 10 years who have been featured either through clips, interviews and, in some cases, both. Those friends include: Cole Stratton, Dana Carvey, Davian Dent, Dean Haglund, Dom Risk, Dr. London Smith, Dr. Norman Trousers, Ed Wallick, Francis Cronin, Geoffrey Welchman, Hunter Block, Jason “Jabs” McNamara, Matt Knudsen, Matt WeinHold, Megan Pentecost, Phil Leirness, River Zambezi, Tommy Royal, and Travis Clark. Thank you, friends, for sending those along! That’s about it. We will continue to bring you clips of what we find out there in the soundcast wilderness, as well as chats with some of the interesting characters we collect along the way, each and every week. In return, if you’d be so kind as to rate and review Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast on Apple and Google Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, iHeart Radio, the Laughable app, YouTube, Podbay, or anywhere else you happen to listen to us. Next week, Tyson will be back with a sheaf of clips for you in Episode 249, and I’ll be diving in the week after that for Epi250 (!), and so forth. In the meantime, be good to each other and if anyone asks if you’ve heard any good soundcasts lately, p-lease be sure to pass the Succotash! — Marc Hershon
The beginning of every year, as far as comedy is concerned, can be celebrated with the venerable SF Sketchfest, one of the biggest, most respected, longest running comedy festivals in the world. It's three weeks of hundreds of shows and thousands of the best performers in comedy all over San Francisco making for the first big comedy event of the calendar year.Of course, that can't happen this year due to COVID-19 and SF Sketchfest co-founder Cole Stratton zooms with TCB's Jake Kroeger about what to do in place of nearly a month of live in-person shows with one big virtual comedy extravaganza (and fundraiser for SF Sketchfest itself) Festpocalypse. Cole also details how doing improv has adapted to the virtual space as well as "hot" takes on Chappelle getting COVID-19, the CA stay-at-home order being lifted, and the debacle of combining the late night and sketch variety categories with the Emmys.Oh yeah, we'll remind you once more: don't gather in person to watch the Super Bowl. Watching it alone is fine.Follow Cole @colestratton on Twitter and @strattoncole on IG. Get tickets and more info about SF Sketchfest: Festpocalypse this Sat. First Draft Episode #219: Janet Varney Janet Varney, Emmy-Nominated actor, comedian, writer, producer, and podcaster. She has appeared in dozens of TV shows, including You’re the Worst, Take My Wife, Burning Love, Stan Against Evil, and Fortune Rookie, and the voice of Korra in The Legend of Korra. She is also the co-founder, creative director, and producer of SF Sketchfest: the San Francisco Comedy Festival (now in its 19th year!), and hosts The JV Club podcast. Links and Topics Mentioned In This Episode Take the First Draft listener survey! David Owen and Cole Stratton were in a sketch group, Totally False People, with Janet Varney. Together the three of them founded SF Sketchfest, and continue to run the annual month-long comedy festival to this day Totally False People got asked to perform at the Aspen Comedy Festival, and Janet was scoped out by Mad TV Bruce McCullough, one of the members of influential sketch comedy group Kids in the Hall, is one of Janet’s closest friends. They met in Janet’s capacity as producer of Sketchfest One of Janet’s earlier roles was on Love, Inc., a Busy Phillips project about a matchmaker Janet was able to craft her character on Burning Love with the blessing of Ken Marino and Erica Oyama, creators of the movies Janet plays “Janet Varney” on her IFC show, Fortune Rookie Janet (and I) went through the Upright Citizens Brigade improv school, which is focused on “game” as opposed to iO West and The Groundlings, where comedians create broad characters. Matt Besser is one of the four founders of UCB. Janet was the voice of Korra in The Legend of Korra, the sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender (not for nothing, but I interviewed Michael DiMartino, co-creator of Avatar, and you can listen to that conversation here). Much like with Korra, I have read that the cast of Adventure Time recorded the show all in a room together. Janet’s podcast The JV Club is amazing! Check it out — you can start with my episode, if you like! Doug Benson’s podcast, Doug Loves Movies, and Jimmy Pardo’s podcast, Never Not Funny, were two comedy podcasts that were around when Janet started her own Pete Holmes’s You Made it Weird and Marc Maron’s WTF with Marc Maron are two long-form interview podcasts that inspired me to start First Draft Memento was a wildly original movie, but Janet argues that level of uniqueness should not be the standard all creators hold themselves to. Cole Stratton (SF Sketchfest, Nash Bridges, Pop My Culture Podcast) is a lifelong improviser and one of the founders and directors of SF Sketchfest. We discuss all facets of the acclaimed, long-running comedy festival. He also just released a limited series podcast with Janet Varney and a stable of improv heavy hitters called The Bat: Improv In the Dark. We chat about the pros and cons of literally performing in the dark as well as talk about his history with comedy, the early days of HBO, his scrappy underdog kittens, his marriage, advice for launching a festival, who's easy to work with and who's hard to work with and so much more including Topic Sombrero and Just Me Or Everyone. Pat Francis, Wayne Federman, Dave Holmes & Cole Stratton read from the 4 greatest books ever written… The individual KISS autobiographies! This show was recorded in front of a LIVE audience on January 20, 2017 at Doc's Lab in San Francisco, CA as part of SF Sketchfest. Kyle Dodson drops the digital needle on some great KISS tunes.
Something a little different this time out — a live epi of Succotash Chats, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast, presented as part of the 16th Annual San Francisco Sketchfest! (l-r) Cole Stratton, Paco Romane, Will Durst, Marc Hershon, Wayne Federman, and Joe Paulino (For those who may be offended by my use of Frisco in the title this week - often an affront to some from the City By The Bay - please bear in mind this was a time-honored handle for San Francisco until Chronicle columnist Herb Caen decided to make it a "thing", including writing a book entitled, Don't Call It Frisco! But screw him. He was from Sacramento originally anyway. I grew up in and around this city and I'll call it whatever I want…) We had a delightful show on a Sunday afternoon at the Piano Fight nightclub in the Tenderloin district with a slim crowd in attendance. (I like to blame the low turnout on the thunderstorm that was going on.) Our beloved booth announcer Bill Heywatt was there, live and in person, and went beyond simply introducing the show and reading a commercial for Henderson's Pants Hippie Hiphuggers — he sang a song, The President's A Trump, based on The Lady Is A Tramp. And he was accompanied on piano by guest Wayne Federman, co-host of the Human Conversation soundcast. Special thanks to Wayne, who was performing the previous night and was due to fly home early Sunday, but stayed over until evening and paid the extra money to switch his flight just to join us. In addition to Bill and Wayne, we had political comedian and social commentator Will Durst who read a live Burst O' Durst segment and also helped me host the event. And on our panel of soundcasters we also had Paco Romane, co-host of the Sup Doc show, and Cole Stratton, co-host of Pop My Culture (and also co-producer of the SF Sketchfest.) Interestingly, both Wayne and Cole's soundcasts have dropped their last episodes. (Pop My Culture actually put up its last show the week before as part of the Sketchfest offerings.) THE PERFORMERS Will Durst is a five-time Emmy nominated political satirist, seven-time nominee for Best Male Stand-Up of the Year, a nationally syndicated columnist, author of four books, and has released five CDs and is sworn enemy to all tyrants foreign and domestic. He is now touring with his new acclaimed one-man show about Baby Boomers. BoomeRaging: From LSD to OMG, and can be seen as one of the three subjects in the new documentary 3 Still Standing, currently available from Amazon Prime. Wayne Federman is a comedian, actor, and writer. He has been touring clubs, colleges, alternative rooms, and theaters for over 30 years. He has performed on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and has his own stand‐up special on Comedy Central. Wayne has appeared in over twenty films including Knocked Up, Step Brothers, The 40‐Year‐Old Virgin, Legally Blonde, 50 First Dates, Funny People, and is featured in the upcoming Will Ferrell/Amy Poehler comedy The House. Television viewers know Wayne from his his recurring role on Curb Your Enthusiasm as well Shameless, Hello Ladies, Documentary Now!, The Larry Sanders Show, Community, and New Girl. He is both an Emmy and WGA-award nominated writer. He has had articles published in The Atlantic, Vulture, and Splitsider and was the head monologue writer for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon as well as co‐authoring a bestselling sports biography on Pistol Pete Maravich. His critically acclaimed 3-volume comedy retrospective, The Chronicles of Federman, was released in 2015 by ASpecialThing Records. Paco Romane’s authentic, engaging, and unpredictable style has established him as an audience favorite. His act is a “mashup of all things funny – stand up, sketch, improv, you name it” – and with his experience in improv and sketch comedy he’ll regularly spin any live moment with the crowd into his act. Paco has appeared on Comedy Central, is a frequent guest on The Todd Glass Show and was twice voted Best Comedian in San Francisco. He has also appeared in numerous films and national commercials, and is a sought after voice-over actor. Check out his comedy album Shaped Like A Thumb and his podcast Sup Doc. Cole Stratton wears a lot of hats. Not literal ones, as he has a tiny head and it just doesn't look right. He is the co-founder of SF Sketchfest. He’s also co-host of the popular (and recently shuttered) Pop My Culture soundcast. He has also guested on other soundcasts, such as Sklarbro County, Jordan Jesse Go!, Competitive Erotic Fan Fiction, Totally Laime, The Long Shot Podcast and James Bonding. Due to planet alignment, he has appeared on TV’s Nash Bridges, re-enacted on America’s Most Wanted, played with puppies and Betty White on the Animal Planet original The Retrievers, thrown-down like the sarcastic white boy he is on Wilmer Valderrama’s Yo Momma, and was a cast member on NBC’s competitive comedy show Comedy Colosseum. He’s a lead in the indie comedy Callback opposite Kevin Farley, has also appeared in the films Around the Fire, Dead Man on Campus, and the festival hit horror/comedy The Selling, where he plays obnoxious office gossip Ed, a role which he will be reprising in the upcoming end-times comedy Diani & Devine Meet The Apocalypse. HOW CAN YOU HELP? Great question! To help us to keep the mics on, you can do one (or all) of several things to offset our production costs. 1) Visit http://SuccotashShow.com and click on the cheery Donate button in the upper right side of the page, OR 2) Visit http://SuccotashShow.com and click on the Amazon banner at the top of the page - we get a little taste of everything you buy from the World's Greatest Anything Store, OR 3) Purch some merch from our Succotashery which, oddly enough, is available at http://SuccotashShow.com! Thanks so much for reading this, listening to the soundcast, and passing the Succotash! — Marc Hershon
Yes, it’s me. Marc Hershon. Your host and fully articulated artificial resuscitation dummy for Epi137 of Succotash, the Comedy Podcast Podcast. Or The Comedy Soundcast Soundcast, as the case may be. This time around we bring you an edition of Succotash Chats, featuring my interview with Matt Knudsen — comedian, actor, bon vivant, and host of the Grabbing Lunch podcast. Matt was kind enough to have me and Cole Stratton, co-host of the Pop My Culture podcast, as guests on his show when I was in LA last year. As he was recently playing a Tuesday night here in Northern California, I thought I’d return the favor. A few weeks ago, we grabbed dinner and a chat at the Piazza D’Angelo in Mill Valley before his show. We talk about his early days as a merchant marine before he caught the comedy bug, and some of the acting and other stuff he's been up to since. (We don't talk specifically about any of these, but Matt's appeared recent in such TV shows as The Mindy Project, Rosewood, The League, and Why? With Hannibal Buress.) ALSO THIS EPISODE We’ve got a Burst O’ Durst segment in this episode. I always appreciate political comedian and social commentator Will Durst's segments on the show but especially with this year’s Presidential race being so wonky — and publicly embarrassing for Americans with what we’ve got running on both tickets. We also have a call via the SpareMin app with Reverend John Price, a faithful listener who is on the verge of dropping his own soundcast soon. And this whole mess is brought to you by Henderson's Back To S'cool Pants. Where would this show be without Henderson's Pants? Well, the same place we are, actually, which means we still can use you vigorous use of our Donate button up at our homesite, http://SuccotashShow.com. While you're there, don't be afraid to use the Amazon banner at the top of the page to do you shopping at the world's largest everything store — because we get a little taste of whatever you spend there. And we've got a link on our site to our Succotashery, whould you want to grab a t-shirt, mug or other piece of merch festooned with the Succotash logo! PODCAST VS SOUNDCAST I mentioned last episode, Succotash Clips Epi136, that I’m going to start a movement to replace the name “podcast” with “soundcast”, because why should Apple retain hold of the medium in the name with the vestige of a technology they've basically discontinued?) So I’ve contacted our musical director, Scott Carvey, and asked if he’d be able to retool his portion of our theme song to say “soundcast” instead of “podcast”. And our booth announcer, Bill Heywatt, is getting ready to record new intros and outros for the show that reflect that change as well. It’s likely going to take some time to make the switchover and then will come the long, hard road to getting an entire world to change how they think and talk about the medium but what the heck? I’ve got nothing better to do with my time. And, in fact, our friend Dave-In-The-Cave, former co-host of former podcast Taco Tuesday, is about to start his new show, the Thunder Taco Soundcast. More on the soundcast situation as it unfolds. Until next time, thanks for passing the Succotash! — Marc Hershon
Janet Varney (Burning Love, The Legend of Korra, The JV Club) and Cole Stratton (Pop My Culture Podcast, Rifftrax) talk with Jamie about starting SF Sketchfest, what they look for when booking the festival, and making your own opportunities. Plus: Homemade sound effects
SF Sketchfest co-founder and Pop My Culture co-host Cole Stratton (@colestratton) joins Andy and Matt to discuss the upcoming Probably Science SF Sketchfest show on January 14th with Adam Savage, academic decathlons, bringing spoiled wine back to life, Phineas Gage, Strange Bedfellows and Chuck and Larry, Hogan vs. Sandler, the Amber neighbor mystery, an old satellite that came back to life, red mercury, letterboxing and summer births.
Yes, it’s me. Marc Hershon. Your host and cruise director for Epi112 of Succotash, the Comedy Podcast Podcast. This is a Succotash Chats episode, featuring a delightful conversation with our Special Guests: Phil Leirness of The Chillpak Hollywood Hour and Lily Holleman, one of the two hosts of a brand new podcast called Am I Right, Ladies? We recorded the chat on their lovely rooftop at the edge of Hollywood as the sun was setting, drinking martinis. I think this is the most civilized episode of this show recorded so far. (Please forgive the occasional gusts of wind, traffic noise, and sirens that make listening a bit of a challenge during portions of the interview…) I've featured both Phil and Lily on the show before but it's been a while and this is the first time that we've had them on doing a "team interview". In addition to Phil's long time co-hosting of Chillpak — now into it's ninth year – he is a filmmaker, an acting teacher, and a violence prevention specialist. Lily is a film producer, a stage and screen actress, a writer, and the toast of the 90-year-old Los Angeles Breakfast Club. One of the other reasons I was doing the "SoCal Shuffle" this weekend is to hang out on the Grabbing Lunch podcast with Matt Knudsen, where I’ll be dining with him and the co-host of the Pop My Culture podcast – and past Succotash guest – Cole Stratton, later today. I’ll let you know when the episode of Matt’s show drops. In addition to our convo with Phil and Lily – or “Phily”, to give them their appropriate Hollywood “Power Couple” portmanteau – we’ve got some delicious Burst O’ Durst with our resident political comedian and social commentator Will Durst. Iin fact, we have a double dose o' Durst — the first segment deals with the fracas over the Confederate Flag, while the second is Will's observance of the 4th of July holiday in the US of A. We also have an ad from Henderson’s Pants – this episode is brought to you by Henderson’s new Pain Pants. We’ll dip into the ol’ Tweetsack. And we DO have a couple of clips – I know it’s a Chats episode – but these clips will be from the shows of our two guests. On the podcast review front, just to keep you up to speed, this past week I reviewed a somewhat silly podcast called Hello From The Magic Tavern, a show featuring sort of D&D characters that are actually hosting a podcast rather than adventuring, and it’s actually pretty funny. I’ll clip ‘em the next Succotash Clips epi. And I also mentioned a couple of other p-casts: A new one to me called You Better DON’T and a special extra episode of Welcome to Night Vale. You can find those reviews and mentions up at Splitsider and Huffington Post. Next episode will be a Succotash Clips show. We've already got a full rack lined up but it you're a comedy podcaster and would like us to feature your show, you can upload a 3-5 minute MP3 clip directly to us at http://hightail/u/succotash. Until next time, thanks for passing the Succotash! — Marc Hershon

At long last, here is Epi97 of Succotash, the Comedy Podcast Podcast. I put this installment together while on vacation in Hawaii — not the first time we've come to you from Paradise — but, just as usual these days, I did my recording from Studio F (in this case, a rented Fiat 500C), so the sound quality of my wraparound portions will sound remarkably the same as always. Went a little bit different with the show this time out. This episode we’ve got not just some comedy podcast clips for you but also a few of the interviews that I did recently at the 3rd Annual Los Angeles Podcast Festival (which was about a month ago now…) Among the many folks I got a chance to talk to while I was in the SquareSpace Podcast Lab and whose interviews I share this episode include… Janet Varney from the JV Club podcast. Yes, I FINALLY got my old friend Janet to sit down and chat for a bit. I’ve known her since before she got out of college, when she and her fellow sketch performers (Cole Stratton, David Owen, and Gabriel Diani) were in a group called Totally False People and used to open for my improv group The Riffingtons in the San Francisco Bay Area. Needless to say, she and her compatriots have FAR outstripped my show business career on many fronts and I love it. She’s great and her podcast The JV Club is going great guns. Christine Blackburn from the Story Worthy podcast. Christine’s always fun to talk to, plus she kept finding new people for me to interview while I was at the podcast festival, which was great – I made some new podcaster friends and found out about some great show I’d never heard of before which we’ll be featuring on future episodes of Succotash. We also talked about working together to try and get Story Worthy on the boards, live, somewhere in the Bay Area soon. Matt Weinhold, co-host of the Monster Party podcast. Always great hanging out with Matt whenever I’m in LA and I was especially happy to have been asked to jump into the Monster Party with him and the guys. Before that happened, though, he dropped by the podfest after work so we chatted it up, then we wandered around poking our heads into the shows going on, then we gorged ourselves on late night eats at Jerry's Deli in the Valley. In addition to the interviews, we play clips from all three of their shows, not to mention a trio of other podcasts, which were harvested by our ace Associate Producer Tyson Saner. N0 TWEETSACK OR 10 MOST ACTIVE SEGMENTS THIS WEEK Because I knew this was going to be a long show, there's no Tweetsack segment this week. And the Top 10 Most Active Shows in Stitcher's Top 100 Comedy Podcasts List is on hold because Stitcher apparently hasn't updated their stats on that list in the past month. Who do they think they are? Succotash? Of all the nerve. Nonetheless, we do have our Burst O' Durst at the end of the show, featuring political comedian and cultural commentator Will Durst, this time talking about the spooky upcoming midterm elections. CLIPS Chillpak Hollywood HourA way longer-than-usual visit with Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness, plucked from their somewaht recent "partycast" in Los Angeles, where they took time out to interview…me. The New HollywoodTyson sent along a clip from a podcast I hadn’t heard before this show: The New Hollywood. I’m not sure this qualifies as a comedy podcast – the show’s homesite describes the show as “a podcast interview show about the greatest films from the 70's – by the people who made them.” - but there are sure some great funny stories in some of the episodes. This clip is from a few weeks ago when actor Stacy Keach and host Brian Flaherty discussed Keach’s career, and when he and a partner wrote what could have been a war epic for producer Roger Corman. The JV ClubHost Janet Varney kicked this podcast off over 130 episodes ago, mostly talking talking one-on-one with female guest from the arts (although her "Boys of Summer" shows allow her to stretch the format a bit.) This clip features her guest, actress Noureen DeWolfe, whom she appeared with in the popular web/TV series reality show spoof Burning Love. Bad ReceptionWe have a clip from a podcast that’s just getting started, called Bad Reception, with host Jordan Scherer. It’s only a few episodes in, and the show’s homesite says that Jordan talks to himself and guests about life, pop culture, and comedy. In the clip Tyson pulled, the host is talking his listeners about why they should give podcasting a try themselves. Story WorthyFeaturing hosts Christine Blackburn and Hannes Phinney. In this clip from the recent "Trouble In My Pants" episode of Story Worthy, we share part of a story that starts out favorably but seems to very quickly head south in a story related by storytelling guest Iris Bahr. Happy Sad Confused Our associate producer Tyson tossed us an episode from Happy Sad Confused with host Josh Horowitz. He talks to celebrities about "everything and anything", according to the show's homesite. I don’t know about that but he recently chatted up Justin Long about working with Kevin Smith, who directed him in the oddball film Tusk. Monster PartyWe've featured clips from Monster Party before, with co-hosts James Gonis, Shawn Sheridan, Larry Strothe, Matt Weinhold, and a different guest each episode. This particular episode, MAd Doctors, which dropped this week, features ME! It's funny in spite of that fact… Just a closing note to let you know that I appreciate all of you who have been mentioning the show on Twitter and Facebook and especially everyone who has taken the time to rate and review us on iTunes and "Thumbs Upping" us on Stitcher Smart Radio. And a reminder that, if you’re shopping on Amazon.com, visit us first at http://SuccotashShow.com and click on the Amazon banner at the top of the page. That will take you to the Amazon site and anything that you buy, they’ll send us a tiny cut of it. If you want to help us offset the costs of production, you can also click on our Donate button at the Succotash site or you can even buy some merch in our Succotashery. So many ways to help pass the Succotash and so little time, really. Thanks once again to Tyson Saner, our associate producer, Joe Paulino, our engineer/producer, an Bill Heywatt, our booth announcer. Thanks for passing the Succotash! — Marc Hershon

This is Episode 82 of Succotash, the Comedy Podcast Podcast, and I AM your host, Marc Hershon. Terribly sorry for the delay between shows. My wife and I have been in the throes of moving - not far, really only about 10 minutes from where we were living - but you know what moving can be like. Especially for a podcaster - you misplace one box with important equipment in it and it's like your show never existed. Anyway, last episode I had fun with our Associate Producer Tyson Saner co-hosting the show. This time out our special guest is Hal Lublin from The Thrilling Adventure Hour and The David Feldman Show. We first interviewed Hal last year when he was up for the 12th Annual San Francisco Sketchfest. This year he was up for the 13th edition and we caught up with him again. (During the interivew we had some short unplanned cameo appearances by Ben Blacker, Cole Stratton, and Scott Lifton, but that's what happenes when you set up in the lobby of the hotel Sketchfest was using as their main HQ for this year's event…) In addition to our catch-up session with Hal, we've got some clips and not one but TWO of our Bursts O' Durst with political comedian Will Durst. THE TEN MOST ACTIVE SHOWS IN THE STITCHER TOP 100 COMEDY PODCAST LIST Who moved the most up or down the Stitcher Top 100 Comedy Podcast list this past week? Just listen… AT MOVED 22. We had him as our Special Guest back in Epi29 – maybe we can rope him into another interview soon. HENDERSON'S PANTS LOGO A few weeks ago, I tweeted that I would like to have folks submit designs for a Henderson's Pants logo, with the idea we might start to sell some t-shirts, open a phony website, who knows? Listener and podcaster Dr. Norman Trousers rose to the challenge and submitted several, one of which appears here: I love it! Anyone else have an idea, you're going to have to go Doc Trow one better. Plus he and his co-host cut us a special clip from their Casa Mirth podcast for this episode! CLIPS What Say You?As you may know, I’m one of the gang of reviewers that contributes to This Week In Comedy Podcasts up at Splitsider.com every week, along with Zoe Schwab, Pablo Goldstein, Josh Sorokach, Robert Schoon, Scott Reynolds, and Jenny Nelson. This week I reviewed What Say You?, hosted by Brian Quinn and Sal Vulcano. If you watch Impractical Jokers on TruTV, these are two of those guys. And Brian is also part of the Tell ‘Em, Steve-Dave podcast on the SModcast network. What Say You? Is just these two guys – Brian and Sal – talking about whatever comes into their heads. The lastest epsiode has a story about a pair of women’s pants that Sal received via UPS by accident and what he ended up doing about them. It’s, well, not normal… And that’s how it starts. The story get so funny that Brian ends laughing so hard that he actually ends up throwing up. As I concluded on in my review on Splitsider for this show: Podcast Gold. Casa MirthI always appreciate when a podcast wants to send along a clip of their show. Promos I'm not as keen on but one thing that only happened afew times in the almost three years that I've been doing Succotash is someone taking the time to put together a custom clip. Dr. Normal Trousers and his partner-in-podcasting River Zambezi have done just that. Coupled with the Henderson's Pants logo that Trousers did, Casa Mirth ranks right up there with the best! HMS CodcastAs I just got done writing about, I'm not a big fan of the pre-fab promo but I got one in that's from a pretty original show and put together by a fellow podcast who's recently had some tough breaks, healthwise. Nigel Boydell had been doing a very funny show called Uncle Arthur’s Bollocks as well as a second program, CSI Troutbeck. One of the complications from his health issues was that he had to have 16 teeth removed. Yikes! This has left him with what he calls "a pronounced lisp." But podcasting is what he wanted to do so he ended up WRITING one and engaging podcasters from all over the place to help read the passages from a series of continuing misadventures of a ship’s crew on a voyage to discover the New World. So far he’s got episodes voiced by the likes of the aforementioned Dr Norman Trousers (Casa Mirth), Matt LeRoy (Wicked Radio Network), Matt Brundage (Another Damn Trivia Show) and Jenny Sorens, wife of podcaster Kat Sorens (Strange Times Show) Salty LanguageOne of our frequent retweeters is the Salty Language podcast with Bryan Stewart, Tony High, and Tate Hayes. These guys and a gal talk about a lot of stuff and recently they were on about The Beatles big 50th Anniversary on the Ed Sullivan show. Tony isn’t on this clip which our Associate Producer Tyson Saner clipped for us, but you’ll get the idea of the show’s flow. The Bitter SoundA longtime supporter of Succotash is Davian Dent, the host of both The Bitter Sound podcast as well as co-host of The Strange Times podcast. The Bitter Sound is a truly strange and wonderful combination of odd ramblings, ambient music, disturbing soundscapes and visits from a variety of people. In fact, our own announcer Bill Heywatt is slated to be a future guest on the show. Me1 vs Me2I got a recommendation from Andy McHaffie, who tweets as @AndyMcH, to give a listen to Me1 vs Me2 Snooker, which features British comedian Richard Herring in an ongoing series of snooker games played by himself playing with himself. Well, not playing with himself. Playing AGAINST himself, really. And also serving as the commentators and the referees for the games. With a premise that odd, it had better be good. And so it is… Not too many clips this episode but the Hal Lublin interview runs about 50 minutes, so you're still getting a lot of show! Enjoy…and remember to please pass the Succotash! — Marc Hershon
Welcome to Epi81 of Succotash, The Comedy Podcast Podcast. I, Marc Hershon, am not alone this week. Joining me as co-host for the show, via Skype, is Associate Producer Tyson Saner! It was about a year ago that Tyson began sending me a stray clip or two, testing the waters to see if his choices jibed with the "flow of the show". And it wasn't long after that I recognized his value in helping me to canvas the vastness that is Podcastland in our ever-widening efforts to sample comedy podcasts. By the end of last summer he'd been named our Honorary Associate Producer. He supplies the show with at least three and as many as a half-dozen of the clips you hear every week, as well as giving me valuable background info on both the specific clips and the shows from which they've been harvested. At the beginning of the year he became our ACTUAL Associate Producer – as you can now hear in Bill Heywatt's closing credits – and this won't be the last time we hear his dulcet tones on the show, methinks. In the course of the show we find out a little of Tyson's background, how he stumbled into being a massive podcast listener and fan, how he found Succotash and what really catches his attention when it comes to deciding to click that Subscribe button on a show. We also have a DOZEN clips in this show, not to mention our Burst O' Durst, a brand new Henderson's Pants ad, and even a song from out of Tyson's repertoire of original music (most of which is available - for free - from SoundCloud!) PLUS we have a Special Bonus Interview at the very end of this epi! Keep listening after Bill Heywatt says "Goodbye!" to hear my interview with Cole Stratton, co-organizer of the 13th Annual San Francisco Sketchfest and co-host of podcasting's Pop My Culture. We were backstage (or "mid-stage", actually) following his appearance in Speechless (a show I help produce) at the Sketchfest. Our chat is only about nine minutes long but, as it comes at the end of the longest Succotash episode yet recorded, it's a while getting there. Top 10 Most Active Shows In Stitcher's Top 100 Comedy Podcast List No wild swings up or down the Stitcher 100 list this past week, but there definitely was some movement in the chart… AT MOVED 9. SModcast >> Tell ‘Em, Steve-Dave +630. The Brian & Jill Show -737. Fitzdog Radio +552. Keith & The Girl Comedy Talk Show -860. A Mediocre Time with Tom & Dan +772. Jim Florentine’s Metal Comedy Midgets +573. Righteous Prick +785. LightCast -794. SModcast >> FeaB +2097. Never Not Funny/Jimmy Pardo -12 I guess there WAS a major jump up the charts, actually, if you look at Succotash's nuimbers. We went from #5945 last week to #5107 this week, so that's pretty sweet! The 2nd Annual Stitcher Awards were last week and I attended the ceremony, which was held at The Chapel in San Francisco. Many awards were given out for categories across the spectrum. I recount the winner in this episode of Succotash, but you can also go see the list of top prize getters on the Stitcher blog. Burst O' Durst In this episode's installment of comedian Will Durst's running commentary, he takes some potshots at the ultra-rich. Podcast Review For my portion of This Week In Comedy Podcasts over on Splitsider.com, I've reviewed The Nerdist with hosts Chris Hardwick, Jonah Ray, and Matt Mira, interview B.J. Novak, actor/writer from The Office and the author of a new book of short stories. The Clips Chillpak Hollywood HourThis week’s clip from CHH with Dean Haglund & Phil Leirness features them thanking me for catching a big ol’ audio snafu in their recent episode. (Hey, we podcasters have to help each other out, right?) SModcastVintage SModcast (from July 10th, 2008) wherein Kevin Smith turns ordinary circumstances into "What If?" adventure time, pushing Scott Mosier furthur and further outside his comfort zone as the "What if"s become more and more unlikey, bizarre and often outrageous. EdumacationThe idea behind this show (form the SModcast universe) is that Kevin Smith needs educating so Andy McElfresh brings in stories and information from around the world while Kevin asks as many questions as he possibly can which Andy also attempts to answer. Hilarity Ensues. This clip is of Andy attempting to apply real world diagnoses to the cast of The Cosby Kids. Fitzdog RadioBobcat Goldthwait’s always entertaining and this time Greg Fitzsimmons has him. We get an interesting glimpse into the life of the once celebrated madman comedian whose ambition these days is all about making and directing movies. To fuel his interest, he’s back in the clubs, which leads to an interesting series of comedy club anecdotes. Perfectly ImperfectThis panel-based comedy commentary show features four variously "challenged" hosts – Kathy Buckley, Tobias Forrest, Geri Jewell and Mark Povinelli – who take off on, debate, and otherwise have their way with a variety of topics. In this clip, it's about marriage equality and Muppets. Broadcast BasementI was a guest with Chris Lanuti, the main host of podcasting’s Broadcast Basement this week. He asked me what kinds of podcasts I don’t particular like and which ones I do. Also how Broadcast Basement can get mentioned on our show more. Having me on as a guest is obviously one way… Nardwuar, The Human ServietteNardwuar's chats with musicians are among some of the most unique in the history of music interviews. He plays his own version of This Is Your Life complete with memorabilia and gifts for his guests. In this clip, he's speaking with eclectic musician Jaap Blonk. Do The Right ThingAnother fine British recommendation from our friend @Good_Podcasts, Do The Right Thing is a comedy panel show hosted by Danielle Ward with team captains Michael Legge and Margaret Cabourn-Smith. Guest team members this week are Jason Manford & Sara Pascoe. In the “Agony Aunt” sequence this episode, the panel answers a letter about how to deal with a free-loading, loser former best friend. Comedy Bang BangHosted by Scott Aukerman, the premise of the show is simple: Scott interviews celebrities, musicians and comedians. Another comedian or performer comes in after the initial interview and pretends to be someone else – sometimes a famous actor, but often a character from a television show, or sometimes a brand new original character. The featured guest is Park & Rec's Nick Offerman, who is interrupted by a whiny, pissy Paul Giamatti…voiced to perfection by James Adomian. A Mediocre Time with Tom & DanThis show was one of the six podcasts nominated for Best Comedy Podcast for the recent Stitcher Awards. The winner was Comedy Bang Bang, but it must mean something that Tom and Dan got in there. They’ve got a subscription model show and a free version and they do their show out of Orlando, Florida. In this clip, they ruminate about Salem witch trials, a hot new restaurant idea, and they also talk about making it big in Nashville with one of their songs. Adam & JPGot a note AND a clip in the Tweetsack this week from the Adam & JP podcast: “Hey Marc, I just recently found your show and I love it. Really great work! In advance, thanks for giving us a shout out. Basically, we talk all things geek (gaming, comics, movies, music, pop culture) with a comedic slant. We host a two hour radio show on a local station every Saturday morning and do a weekly podcast. I have attached a clip from our latest episode, in case you wanted to use it. Thanks again and we would love to chat with you on the show sometime to discuss your show." J Patrick Pretty funny stuff, guys! That's a pretty full show! Almost TWO hours of Succotash! Enjoy it, savor it, and please remember to pass the Succotash along, too! — Marc Hershon
Howdy and Happy New Year from Succotash, the Comedy Podcast Podcast! In typical fashion, this greeting isn't coming until the second week of the new year. We kick off the show with Skype visit from comedian, podcaster, and friend of the show Paul Mecurio. He's going to be at The Punchline in San Francisco this week, so if you're in the Bay Area, be sure to check him out! (I'll be at the Wednesday night show and will be packing some of our Succotash magnetic buttons - just ask me for one!) I'll be meeting up with Paul and doing a face-to-face sitdown for a longer chat which we'll feature on an upcoming epi. Paul's opening intro with me is only a few minutes of this show, which means we've got time for a bunch of clips, our Burst O' Durst - in which political comedian Will Durst gives us his predictions for 2014, an ad for Henderson's Auld Lang Slacks, our Tweetsack segment, and the pilot episode for Adam Barker's new Batfella pod series! As I announce in this week's episode, our Honorary Associate Producer Tyson Saner is no longer honorary, he's actually the Official Associate Producer! While there's no salary or benefits that come with the gig, we're honored to have his services in harvesting clips from the vast field of comedy podcasts out there. And he'll be co-hosting an upcoming episode soon, so you'll get to hear from the man himself. The Dana Gould Hour -13 The Clips Big Pop FunWe’ve featured Big Pop Fun before. That's the podcast hosted by comedian and actor Tom F. Wilson. It’s a nicely put-together interview show and recently the guest was none other than friend-of-Succotash Travis Clark from the Tiny Odd Conversations podcast. (I have my own interview that I haven’t had a chance to get to that I did with Travis and his wife Brandi when I was in LA for the Podfest last October. I'll post it soon. I promise! This Ain’t IowaI’m often talking about how vast the world of podcasting is and comedy podcasts comprise a major continent of that world. It’s so big that it’s hard to see – or hear – everything until it’s too late. This Ain’t Iowa is a podcast out of Las Vegas, hosted by comedian Brian Mollica and it’s been chugging along since 2006. But now that chugging is coming to an end. Brian’s doing his “farewell tour” of the show, as he calls it, and has been having past co-hosts and regular guests calling and dropping in. One of those guest was a guy who was only ever identified on the show as “Wooden Spoon” and Spoon seems to have a somewhat colored and checkered past on the show. Pop My CultureWe haven’t heard from the Pop My Culture podcast for a while, with Cole Stratton and Vanessa Ragland - oh, they've been podcasting, we just haven't played a clip from them recently - but we’re going to hear from them now, along with their guest Armin Shimmerman, who you might know from his role as Quark on Deep Space Nine. Break Room PartyI first caught wind of the Break Room Party podcast on Twitter so I decided to check ‘em out. At first, it sounded to me like one of those dreaded “shootin’ the shit” shows I’ve kind of come to fear having to slog through but I hung in there. Sure enough, the four hosts – Josh, Brandon, Trey & Ryan – didn’t disappoint. What they lack in comedy chops they make up for in comraderie and good natured ribbing. PLUS they dispense business advice. Every episode’s a different topic and this time it was about The Interview. The boys got off into a sideline about How To Turn The Interview Around. UttabullAnother show that came via a Twitter reference is the first podcast that I’d heard of that originates from the Isle of Man in the British Isles. Liam and Jason are the hosts of Uttabull. (Or, rather, Liam seems to be THE host while Jason USUALLY shows up.) They do a segment called Jason’s News and that’s where I pulled this clip from, as the gents get into a story from somewhere in Poland. Hangin’ OutcastTwitter was once again the conduit for me virtually meeting up with the Hangin’ Outcast podcast. These guys – Alex and Justin - are located in the Heart of the Inland Empire, which is another way of talking a whole bunch of nothing off the beaten track in Southern California. From this episode, I pulled the two hosts doling out some advice for those who want some to get into this podcast game. The 31 PodcastTyson Saner clipped us something from a show I hadn’t heard of before: The 31 Podcast. It’s basically a twist on the old “20 Questions” game, in which the host, Brandt Tobler, asks his guests 31 questions. Not sure why. But here he is with his guest Tom Segura, cohost of his own podcast, Your Mom’s House. BatfellaHere's the FULL debut episode of Adam Barker’s parody audio series, The Adventures of Batfella. Written and voiced by Adam along with some guests. Episode one, of many more to come, features the voice talents of British actress Rita Ramnani. If you're an Adam Barker fan (And, really, who isn't?), you should enjoy this show and not just because the two podcasts that Adam normally does – the Oddcast Podcast UK and Its Not Soccer are taking a break until early spring while his girlfriend has a baby. There it is then. Epi79 is done. 2014 is off and running. And all is right with the world. I want to thank you, our listener, for doing us the honor of listening, I hope you continue to listen and, what’s more it would be delicious of you if you were to pass the Succotash… — Marc Hershon
Break out the Entertainment Weekly and pull up IMDb and AV Club in different browser tabs because Rob and I are about to get deep into some pop culture goodness. Rob is an incredibly nice guy and an excellent actor/improviser, and he goes into some really interesting details on how he became a fan of pop culture in general (Looney Toons played a big role!) and how it continues to feed into his creative life (the phrase "Comedy Cops" is used!). Tune in, people. Notes: The hosts of Pop My Culture are Cole Stratton and Vanessa Ragland, but I won't link it because Rob wasn't really recommending it. Doug Loves Movies! My personal favorite podcast. The Escape From Tomorrow episode is October 9th with Adam Scott and Marc Maron. The first episode of Jeeves and Wooster Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova on The Simpsons

Disalmanac Podcast 054 (nine and a half minutes exactly) This week, Disalmanac brings you fact-like facts about the Father of Our Country, George Washington. Although–Maury Povich found that he was NOT the father. You should have seen George Washington dance across that stage in joy. Sadly, Betsy Ross was crushed. And stay tuned for a […]
The co-founder of SF Sketchfest and talented improvisor who performs regularly at the Westside Comedy Theater in Los Angeles, Cole Stratton is also the co-host of one of the most popular podcasts on the interwebs, Pop My Culture, voted so by Rolling Stone Mag, no less. Here he joins the discussion about summer fun and movies, as well as answering some of your emails live.
First thing you gotta know is that Epi61 is the longest installment of Succotash, the Comedy Podcast Podcast, that we've done to date. No particular reason for it. The interview with our Special Guest Graham Elwood comes in at about 30 minutes. But we've got a bunch of podcast clips to share, a Boozin' With Bill segment, the TweetSack section, our Burst O' Durst and a new song by musical geekmaster John Anealio. That, plus my usual rambling gum-flapping has us pushing the limits in terms of just how long someone can shovel Succotash into their earholes. Sue me - this stuff's free. I was delighted to talk at length with the aforementioned Graham Elwood. We had tried to link up when he was in San Francisco recently for a face-to-face sit-down but couldn't coordinate schedules. So we Skyped it and it came out fine. Graham's a comedian, an actor, a writer, a podcaster, and most recently, co-producer and organizer of the Los Angeles Podcast Festival (the 2nd annual is this October 4-6 in Santa Monica.) Along with his partner-in-crime Chris Mancini, Graham hosts the Comedy Film Nerds podcast and also co-authored the Comedy Film Nerds Guide to Movies. In addition, he is heard often on Doug Loves Movies, competing against the audience during Doug Benson's live shows on the road. We talk about how he got his comedy start, his podcast start, his podcast festival start...lots of starts. And, most important to our podcaster listeners, reveals what they have in store at this year's LA PodFest to let more of us get into the action of podcasting in relative comfort from the event. (And his latest CD, Palm Strike Dance Party, is available at http://Graham Elwood.com!) GET HIP It's not too late to help friend-of-Succotash Chris Bonno (interviewed in Epi43) as he's just gone through hip replacement surgery. Being as he' a comedian and a painter, he's got zip in terms of health insurance, so paying for his operation is going to be one giant mofo that Obama's health care program doesn't seem set to cover. You can find out how to kick a little money into the hip kitty through his website at http://ChrisBonno.com or else click on the link to get over to the GiveForward website where they're taking care of the funds as they come in. THE 10 MOST ACTIVE IN THE STITCHER TOP 100 COMEDY PODCAST LIST I realized that what I read The 10 Most Active in the Stitcher Top 100 Comedy Podcast List, veroften I don’t even know some of these shows I’m reading about. And they’re in the Top 100 of comedy podcasts – that’s out of literally THOUSANDS. So starting this week I’m going to pick one or two or a few to play clips from so we can all learn as we grow. Here’s the list of, again, the most ACTIVE shows on the list this past week. That means, regardless of their rank, they showed the most movement either up or down the chart. 47. The Champs with Neal Brennan & Moshe Kasher -1059. The World of Phil Hendrie +2163. Sir Darryl Radio Experience +33973. Sex Squad +1779. Conversations with Matt Dwyer +25780. The Dana Gould Hour -1581. Yoshi Didn’t Podcast -1482. Wits +2784. Rollin’ With Dice & Wheels +11398. SModcast FeAB -17 BURST O' DURST FROM THE OL' BOOMERAGER HIMSELF We have our usual Burst O' Durst feature but I wanted to remind those Succotashians who live in the San Francisco Bay Area that Will Durst still has a couple of Tuesday nights (thru June 25th) left in the run of his one-man show, BoomeRaging: LSD to OMG, at the Marsh Theater in San Francisco. Hop over to http://WillDurst.com for showtimes and ticket information. SING YOUR SONG, NERDY MUSIC MAN Our friend John Anealio - from The Functional Nerds podcast with co-host Patrick Hester - has a new song out and we've got it featured in this episode. I'll Be Your Thor is a love song from a nerd to his even nerdier lady for whom only one hero can save the day. Once you hear it on Succotash and you love it, you can download it for FREE over at http://JohnAnealio.com. STRAIGHT FROM THE BOTTLE Our Boozin' With Bill is a little different than our usual visit with Succotash's booth announcer cum bartender. He's unearthed an ancient bottle of creme de menthe and he's determined to see if it's still viable for getting a heat on. THE CLIPS The Sir Darryl Radio ExperienceI’m not sure what this show is all about – or why it shot up 339 places on the Stitcher Top 100 Comedy Podcasts this week. I listened to part of a recent episode where Sir Darryl, who bills himself on the homesite for the show as “The Most Articulate Negro in America”, starts drinking wine and apparently starts to get loopy within just a couple of minutes. Conversations with Matt DwyerComedian, actor and writer Matt Dwyer’s podcast is into its 50s, episode wise, and this week his show's Stitcher numbers leaped up 257 places this week! We feature a slice from his recent interview with Duncan Trussell, who is also a comedian and the host of the Duncan Trussell Family Hour. Rollin’ With Dice and WheelsDice is back. Celebrity Apprentice wasn’t enough and now Andrew “Dice” Clay and his longtime opening act Michael “Wheels” Parise have their own podcast. They’re only into their Epi8 and doing phenomenal numbers – up 113 places this week to make it into the Top 100 on Stitcher. In this recent episode we're clipping, comic Tom Green is co-hosting in place of Wheels. Pop My CultureWe haven’t looked in on Cole Stratton and Vanessa Ragland of the Pop My Culture podcast for awhile. They’re going great guns, after taking a little time away from the mikes, and just dropped their 116th episode, which features guest Dana Gould. Comic, actor, writer, he’s also the host of podcasting’s The Dana Gould Hour. (I’m also featuring this episode for my review in This Week In Comedy Podcasts over on Splitsider.com!) The Paul Mecurio ShowThe Sideshow Network has a massive pile of steaming comedy podcasts, with some really great shows like PodCRASH with THAT Chris Gore, Overview with our pal Rick Overton, and Story Worthy with Christine Blackburn & Hannes Phinney. It’s also home to The Paul Mecurio Show. I’ve clipped Paul here before but it’s been a while. Paul’s guest this week was Jay Leno. I don’t think I’ve heard of Jay being on any podcast before – is that possible? Anyway, Paul got him – they have a bit of a history together – Jay bought the very first joke Paul sold before, which gave him the inspiration to give up his law practice to become a comedian. The Bitter Sound PodcastAlthough I’ve played a few bits and pieces and show ID’s from Davian Dent over at The Bitter Sound podcast, I think I’ve yet to feature a bona fide clip…until now. He’s also a co-host of the Strange Times podcast along with Kat Sorens from the Rigid Fist podcast and Bonn from The Bonn & Obo show. But he’s off in his own thing here, with music, sounds and a great set of pipes to boot. The Geek GenerationRob Logan over at the Geek Generation podcast did what every red-blooded internationally-heard comedy podcaster should do – he sent in a clip! It’s easy to do: Just send along a 3-5 minute MP3 clip of your show to marc@SuccotashShow.com. If you want to include a little written descriptor of what the clip’s about, even better. Like Rob did – here’s what he says: "Rob Logan and Mike Volpe get inspired by the upcoming Fall TV schedule and pitch some show ideas of their own." Whew! That's a lot of show! Hope you enjoy it - don't be shy about letting folks know about it, either! Go on up to iTunes and give us a rating and a little review. And you can give us a thumbs up at Stitcher.com and leave a comment. Or visit our Facebook page and leave us a comment there. Then there's always Stitcher. See you in the next episode but, in the meantime, don't forget to pass the Succotash! — Marc Hershon
I have declared myself to be a "counter Resolutionist" this year and, accordingly, 2013 is right on track since I have broken no resolutions. You can't break what you don't have. Been suffering from some kind of viral crud (I'm not talking about an onslaught of cute kitty videos) that's going around the past few days but I don't think it's the flu. More like a cold. Whatever it is, it's taken up residence in my throat and sinuses, and will be making a guest appearance during this episode. Our Special Guest is no virus although, with David Owen's tenaciousness at lining up comedy groups and venues for the San Francisco Sketchfest, he could be mistaken for something contagious. Last year about this time we had Cole Stratton, co-host of the Pop My Culture podcast, former member of my improv group The Riffingtons, and one of the three founder/producers of the Sketchfest. For the 12th year of the 'fest, Mr. Owen joins me to talk about this year’s upcoming exciting show. How exciting? Here's just a partial list of the performers scheduled to appear: Fred Armisen, Carrie Brownstein, Rob Corddry, Erinn Hayes, Rob Huebel, Ken Marino, Jonathan Stern, David Wain, Bruce Campbell, Patton Oswalt, Reggie Watts, Kevin McDonald, Adam Savage, Kristen Schaal, Paul F. Tompkins, Janet Varney, Eddie Pepitone, Michael Ian Black, Beth Dover, Carla Gallo, Ryan Hansen, Rob Huebel, Natasha Leggero, Joe Lo Truglio, Ken Marino, Erica Oyama, June Diane Raphael, Paul Scheer, Jonathan Stern, Maria Bamford, Roger Bart, Jennifer Coolidge, Rachel Dratch, Janeane Garofalo, Laraine Newman, Eugene Pack, Dayle Reyfel, Maya Rudolph, Fred Willard…the list goes on and one. If you’re in or near San Francisco between January 24 and February 10, check out the amazing lineup and get ticket at http://SFSketchfest.com You can also follow info about the show on Twitter by following @SFSketchfest. COUNTDOWN As we started doing on the show (and in this blog) last week, here is the latest Top 10 Comedy Podcasts from Stitcher Smart Radio: 10. SModcast w/Kevin Smith9. The Joe Rogan Experience WHAT'S THAT MUSIC? This week we're featuring Jesus Walks by Karen Kilgariff from her album, Behind You. Find it and other goodies, such as Karen's tour schedule, at http://KarenKilgariff.com DURST'S BACK Although I don't have any resolutions for the New Year, our in-house political comedian and Raging Moderate Will Durst does. and he's not ashamed to share them in this epi's Burst O' Durst. Catch more of Will's musings at http://WillDurst.com THE CLIPS By The Way – In Conversation with Jeff GarlinThis new show jumped into the charts at #9 for its very first week of life. It’s over on the Earwolf network and the show is recorded live in front of an audience at Largo in Los Angeles. For his first outing, host Jeff Garlin has tapped Larry David, the co-creator of Seinfeld and with whom he works on Curb Your Enthusiasm. It’s over an hour of rollicking conversation and the audience LOVES it, as you can hear in this clip. This Week With Larry MillerHe’s back! I mentioned last episode that comedian/actor Larry Miller was finally well enough to return to the podcast waves this past week. The first new episode of This Week With Larry Miller dropped last Thursday and most of the show Larry talks about the freak accident that landed him in the hospital, a medically-induced coma, and months of rehabilitation. And he does it in classic Larry Miller storytelling style. (Because that sort of thing is so hard to clip, I’ve opted to tease you with his Joke Of The Week, which is just Larry telling an old joke.) Double Talk RadioAt Double Talk Radio, Double K and one of his guests from this episode, Matty, have a story to tell. And you’ll probably hear from DK’s co-host Cookie J and their other guest, The Hick. The audio quality of this cast is less than our usual standards, but they’re got something going on it seems – been on for awhile and have a lot of loyal listeners. Duncan Trussell Family HourWith well over a hundred episodes of the Duncan Trussell Family Hour under his belt, comedian Duncan Trussell's guests include comedians, actors and people from all sorts of interesting directions. Most recently his focus in his pre-interview portion of the show has been focused on a probable diagnosis of testicular cancer. Our hearts go out to him and we wish him a safe recovery. And you have to admire he spirit with which he approaches such a heavy thing, as heard from the beginning of a recent episode… The Geek GenerationThe Geek Generation, with co-hosts Rob Logan, Mike Volpe, Anna Zifcak, Mikey Arsenault, is another podcast that’s passed the century-episode mark a while ago. They cover ANYTHING remotely geeky – video games, movies, TV, comic books, tech, animation – you name it, they’ll eventually get around to it. And even though co-host Anna Zifcak has grown up by buying a house and now she’s about to get married. But a geek can’t have an ordinary wedding now, can she? Wheelbarrow Full of DicksThat’s the name of a podcast featuring Mike, Drunk, Paul, and Nappier – four guys I know very little about because – as is often the case – 84% of podcasters have an aversion to revealing much information about themselves. (I got that stat the same place I found out that 72% of podcasters make up statistics.) Anyway, Wheelbarrow falls under my heading of being an STS show – Shooting The Shit – and these guys will go anywhere that there’s conversation to be had. It’s Not Soccer PodcastWhat would you call a sports podcast that has precious little to do with sports? How about the It’s Not Soccer Podcast. That’s what Adam Barker who Succotashians know from the Oddcast Podcast and Billy Cutmore call their show. As THEY say, if you’re not into sports, listening to It’s Not Soccer will NOT make you feel left out. That's about it for this episode. Appreciate you stopping by. Appreciate you even more if you wanted to hit the Donate button in the upper right hand corner of our homesite. Or do you Amazon online shopping by getting there through the carousel on the bottom right of our http://SuccotashShow.com site. You can even ignore the offers for the Hallmark Channel movie DVD's that I wrote or the I Hate People! business book I wrote if you want to - but for every product you buy when you go through our page's portal, we get a li'l kickback from the online store named after a big, dirty river. Even if you can't or don't donate or buy anything, could you do me a favor and remember to pass the Succotash? — Marc Hershon
This week we talk about a new favorite – Albert Brooks' “A Star is Bought.” Meta before people were using that term to describe the brilliantly, intentionally redundant and self-referential kind of work you find on this album. We had … Continue reading →
It's Mortality Mall Madness in this ep featuring Twitter/Witsream star TurboGrandma (aka Nikki Walter) and San Francisco Sketchfest Founder & Pop My Culture host Cole Stratton.
Coming to you from beautiful San Francisco California, its another brand new episode of This My Show. On this episode we are joined by Cole Stratton, he is one of the founders of the excellent SF Sketchfest comedy festival, and you may also know him as one of the co host of the popular Pop My Culture podcast. We talk to Cole about this years festival, what it takes to put together one of the nations biggest comedy festivals and we discuss stories currently developing in the comedy world. All this and a new segment called This Or That.
It's January, which is S.F. Sketchfest time in San Francisco. Now in it's 11th year, Sketchfest has bcome a Big Deal in the national sketch scene, taking place in multiple venues across the city with over a hundred shows. And with some very big names gracing the stage — this year bigger than ever —the festival has gained massive attention. That was one great reason to have Cole Stratton as our guest, as he is the co-founder and co-organizer of the event. If you've never had a chance to check out S.F. Sketchfest and you're within driving distance of The City By The Bay, you should definitely try to get in to see at least one of the shows (if you can still get tickets - many of the bigger name shows sell out quick!) For the full lineup, hop over to http://SFSketchFest.com. The other great reason to have Cole on is that he's also the co-founder and co-host of Pop My Culture, a very popular podcast that's about ten years younger than Sketchfest. It made a bunch of Top 10 Podcast lists last year and just fell in as one of fleet of p'casts under the Nerdist banner. Cole and his co-host, Vanessa Ragland, make for an engaging team and have had an impressive lineup of comic and celebrity guests on their show. It's always a little more fun for me to have a fellow podcaster on a Succotash 'sode (the last time was Epi8 with Rob Celli from What Duvet Said), because they're invited to chime in on the various clips that we feature. Normally we don't play as many clips when we interview a guest but, this being one of our out-of-Studio-P interviews means that the guiding hand of engineer/producer Joe Paulino wasn't there to keep me more professional. so we have ten clips, a Burst O' Durst, a classic Henderson's Pants commercial...and the episode runs 17 minutes over our usual one hour time. We also have a Skypversation with Kelly Carlin, spoken word performer and friend-of-the-show, who is performing her show A Carlin Home Companion at S.F. Sketchfest on Friday, January 27th. Succotash News: We have merchandise! What's a podcast, after all, without something to try to sell you? Now we have it! There's not much in the "Succotashery" so far — several styles of t-shirts, coffee mugs hats and some other stuff, all sporting the spiffy new Succotash logo. We'll bring more stuff online in the coming months but, for now, click on this link (or over on the ad on the side) and check out the swag! Succotash Reminder: Yours truly is a contributing reviewer for This Week In Comedy Podcasting, Jesse Fox's delightful column at Splitsider.com. There's a fresh rack of the funniest and hottest comedy p'casts reviewed every week. For a full lineup of who Cole and I talk about on this show, it's right here! (As always, just click on a show's title to be taken to their website. All the shows are available through iTunes. And some of them (including Succotash) can be found on your smartphone or tablet's Stitcher Smart Radio app.) Pop My CultureAs is our custom whenever we have a fellow podcaster along, their show gets to ride shotgun. Cole Stratton and Vanessa Ragland's hot p'cast features guest comics, actors and celebrities chewing the fat about the latest trends, movies, music and media. The guest this clip is Jim Rash, familiar to fans of NBC TV's Community as Dean Pelton, and also co-writer of the hit movie The Descendants. The BugleThis fun news-based comedy show straddles the Atlantic with one host, John Oliver, based in New York and the other host, Andy Zaltzman, holding down the fort in England (where the show originates from.) Epi178 is a historic episode of sorts as it is the last one produced under the banner of the London TimesOnline. From here on out the lads are on their own (but if you already subscribe to The Bugle on iTunes, you should receive the new episodes without interruption.) Never Not FunnyFast n' furious Jimmy Pardo is the host of this long-running comedy podcasts - one of the firsts to get out there, actually. He's also got a pay-to-play model going for the "Pardcast", so you'll have to visit his site to get the whole magilla. You can sample every episode through a free 20 minute hunk that's up on iTunes, though. Jordan, Jesse, Go!Jesse Thorn and Jordan Morris host fast-paced conversational show. Our guest, Cole Stratton, has worked with them a lot over the years and says they're as fun in person as they sound on their podcast. In this clip they're joined by "the Bitter Buddha", comedian Eddie Pepitone. The Long Shot PodcastPepitone again? Yep, only here he's on his home turf, where he is a regular along with Sean Conroy, Jamie Flam and Amber Kenny. This quartet often has a guest but, even when they done, they hold court and laugh it up about current events, disturbing dreams and pretty much anything their wide-ranging conversations turn up. The Thrilling Adventure HourOur guest, Cole, has lots of good things to say about this imaginative show, which is a monthly comedy staple in Los Angeles as a live stage show. Done in the motif of an old-time scripted radio, the cast and their slate of impressive guests consistently deliver a great listen. And since it's meant to be a radio offering, it's translation from stage to podcast is dead on. You Made It WeirdComic Pete Holmes and his show is now part of the Nerdist network of podcastery. Patterned in the spirit of Marc Maron's WTF show, Holmes has a knack for making his guests (often fellow comedians) feel a little uncomfortable at some point in the show but seems to usually all end in laughter. Here he talks with the very funny Nick Kroll. (Side note brought up by our guest this week: Holmes is the voice of the E-Trade baby on the TV commercials!) Pod F. TompkastWe've featured this very creative show before and with good reason - host Paul F. Tompkins is one of the funniest, fastest and inventive comedians around. The scripted longform material performed on the Tompkast is difficult to do justice to in the time we have, so do yourself a favor and grab a full show soon. This My ShowPodcaster Jeremy Wein is a tribute to the idea that if you want to do a podcast, just go ahead and do it. He's not a comedian himself but he's managed to crack the code to get a lot of funny people to sit still with him long enough to do a decent interview. Here's he's caught up with NBC-TV's Parks & Recreation's Aziz Ansari. (Apologies to Jeremy - in the episode, I give out his site as ThisMyShow.com...it's actually ThisMyShow.NET) Big Pop FunAnother Nerdist family podcast? Yeah, I'm not sure why they're so prevalent on Succotash this episode — I swear there's no payola involved (but a fellow can dream, can't he?) — but they do have a quality lineup over there. This one is a young p'cast, hosted by veteran comedian Tom Wilson, most famous for his role as Biff (and Buford) Tannen in the Back To The Future movies. He's also a good interviewer as you can hear in his 3-part chat with comedian/writer/director Steve Oedekerk. We close out the show with our Burst O' Durst feature, faithfully supplied to us by the politically bent comedy stylings of Will Durst. That's it for this batch. Write me sometime at marc@SuccotashShow.com and let me know what's on your mind. You can also call into the Succotash Hotline at (818) 921-7212 and sound off about something you've heard or something you want to hear. Thanks for listening! (You are listening, aren't you?) Don't forget to pass the Succotash! — Marc Hershon

After teasing you for weeks and posting a couple of test shows to get an idea what Succotash might sound like, the premiere of the Comedy Podcast Podcast is here! We're giving you a myriad of ways to listen: the title of this blog piece will take you to the Internet Archive site where the show is currently housed. At the bottom of this blog piece is an embedded player. AND we should be available for download from iTunes very soon! (We're trying to set that up AS this is being typed into the blog...watch this space for confirmation that iTunes has given us the thumbs up!) As it turns out, screening a bunch of comedy podcasts every week to find 3 to 5 minutes of funny stuff from each one is pretty time-consuming. And then having to engineer the variety of sound qualities possessed by the lot of them takes even more time. So, although we were hoping to be able to bring Succotash to you once a week, at the beginning it may run a little bit slower than that — even as much as a month. At least for the "Big Show", with 8 to 10 different show snippets. working more on the fly, with a laptop and a microphone, we may be able to bring you some shorter tastes. And maybe even some guest interviews! (We already have interest from friends like Rick Overton, Mark Pitta and Dana Carvey to jump in here and have some fun.) On this show, the Succotash premiere, you'll be hearing from: • The Adam Carolla Show with guest Greg Fitzsimmons • Comedy Death Ray Radio with Scott Aukerman and guest Patton Oswalt • After Hours with Mark Pitta and guest Carol Doda • Mike And Tom Eat Snacks with Michael Ian Black and Tom Cavanagh • Pop My Culture with Cole Stratton and Vanessa Ragland • The Smartest Man in the World with Greg Proops • Walking The Room with Greg Berendt and Dave Anthony • WTF with Marc Maron Hosted by Marc Hershon, Succotash is produced and engineered by Joe Paulino, with original Succotash theme by Scott Carvey. If you want to contact us, you can email us at marc@SuccotashShow.com. Please "Like" us on our Succotash Show page on Facebook and follow our tweets @SuccotashShow. Feel free to leave comments in the area provided for it immediately following this blog post. Pass the Succotash! Marc Hershon Ooops! Forgot to include one last mention - a snippet that went astray but is definitely in the show! Thanks to Secret Service Agent Hijaz for pointing out that I forgot to include in the above rundown... • Never Not Funny with Jimmy Pard
Greetings to comedy aficionados and, especially, comedy podcast aficionados! As the creator and host of Succotash, the Comedy Podcast Podcast, I wanted to let early birds who dig this stuff in on the beginning birth pangs of my new show. My goal is to create an audio offering akin to TV's version of "The Soup" (or Chris Hardwick's "Web Soup" on G4) but one dedicated to just comedy podcasts (or podcasts featuring comedians - there is a difference...)Here's my "dress rehearsal" — a version of the show that I slapped together myself on my Mac, using a primitive version of Audacity, an old Logitech USB microphone and one sleepless night. I'm using this to pull the pieces of the puzzle together. And it's working! (I THINK to get it at this point, you need to click on the title of THIS blog item to get to the download. Let me know if that doesn't work and I'll try something else.)So far I have blessings from a bunch of podcasting comedian friends, including Greg Proops, Dean Haglund, David Feldman, Cole Stratton, Kelly Carlin, and Kevin Pollak, with more jumping onboard daily that are happy to allow me to use snippets and highlights from their most current offerings. (The hope is that listeners, both new and old, can use Succotash to learn what's going on in the world of comedy podcasts. Then they can grab a taste and go get themselves a full and tasty download at their leisure.)I've got friend Scott Carvey composing an original theme for the show — the tune you'll hear on the test episode is just a placehold, appropriately entitled "Succotash" by the Bel-Airs. And I'm meeting with another buddy this week to talk about him producing the episodes in his state-of-the-art studio. And YOU can serve a vital part of the Succotash process — should you choose to accept the responsibility — by letting me know what I'm missing, forgetting or not including. There are a lot of comedy podcasts out there and I can't listen to them all. So drop me a line at marc@SuccotashShow.com to let me know where to go.Finally, although I'm hosting this puppy, my real hope is to feature some guest comedians along the way. Both the ones who are doing such a great job posting and hosting their own podcasts but also those comics who are fun to have drop in and share a few minutes talking about comedy, their careers, and their take on state of comedy today. That's about it. Love to have you download and listen to this test episode of Succotash, although I'll beg you to please remember that this is nothing more than a crude rendition, a run through, a dress rehearsal of what I'm hoping the final product will sound like. Your comments and criticisms are welcome, with in comment form on this blog or by email. You can also visit and like the Succotash Show page on Facebook and follow us @SuccotashShow on Twitter!Cheers,Marc Hershon
Our visitor this week is Cole Stratton; a comedian, podcaster, and one of the founders of S.F. Sketchfest. Cole has a unique insight into what it takes to put on a live podcast, and how comedy festivals such as his are adapting to the growth of the medium. He and Jeff discuss the tricky subject of podcast monetization and how social media sites like Twitter can affect a budding show. You can hear Earwolf personalities such as Paul Scheer and The Sklar Brothers on his show Pop My Culture.
On this, the 13th episode of Portroidcast, I interview SF Sketchfest co-founder Cole Stratton. We talk about how the festival was created, how it has evolved, and other related topics. Enjoy! (especially those mysterious "other related topics")
