Today, the Spotlight shines On Danish saxophonist, composer, and best-selling author Benjamin Koppel.Benjamin joined us to discuss his July 2023 release Perspective, the latest work from KCB Collective, a trio that, in addition to Koppel, includes Scott Colley on bass and Brian Blade on drums. It looks great on paper and sounds even better.Benjamin is the grandson of Danish classical composer Herman D. Koppel, while his father, Anders Koppel, is a renowned Hammond organ player and a composer. As you will hear, music, creativity, and the arts are in the Koppel DNA.We recorded this episode at the end of September, and since then, Benjamin has announced another new project, due out November 25. White Buses tells the story of the Red Cross evacuation operation at the end of World War II that rescued over 20,000 prisoners from Nazi concentration camps. The work features a mix of first-person spoken accounts gathered by Koppel himself and brand-new compositions performed by a set of international all-stars. We recorded our talk before this project was formally announced and before the October 7 terrorist attacks in Israel, which added an all-to-unfortunate timely nature to its release.Benjamin and I had a great time connecting, which came on our second attempt after he and I had some time zone snafus.
As a young adult Burt Bacharach used fake IDs to get into 52nd Street jazz clubs to have his mind blown away by heroes of the bebop revolution like Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Those early impressions could not but leave a mark in his sophisticated pop songs, seeds that would later make those very same songs blossom in the hands of jazz players, going full circle. As a composer and songwriter he had a remarkable gift for combining simplicity and complexity, the African roots of jazz R&B and soul with the European classical influences of French impressionism. The result were the unforgettable melodies he was admired for, many of which are featured in this playlist, as interpreted by a wide ranging of progressive musicians. The playlist features Larry Goldings, Harry Allen; Toots Thielemans; Gabor Szabo; Isaac Hayes; Dee Dee Bridgewater; Charles Lloyd; Bill Frisell; Dionne Farris, Charlie Hunter; Steve Kuhn; Marie Mcauliffe; Benjamin Koppel.
Here are some of the tunes that we have loved the most during these first six months of the year. Surely there are tens more of equal value, but this is not a scientific exercise… Rather–since jazz is all about living in the moment–we made our selections based on the strong, and lasting, impression that those tunes elicited when we first listened to them. The playlist features David Krakauer; Kahil El'Zabar; Steven Bernstein; Benjamin Koppel; David Virelles, Julio Barreto; Laufey, Dodie; Pipe Dream; Byard Lancaster; Heroes Are Gang Leaders; Joona Toivanen. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
