This episode contains more audio from the trial of Sandy Murphy and Rick Tavish for the murder of Ted Binion. Binion was a wealthy American gambling executive and one of the sons of Vegas casino magnate Benny Binion, owner of the Horseshoe Casino. Ted, a multi-millionaire, loved the high life and ran the Horseshoe for a while, hosting the casino's poker tournaments. But in 1998, Ted, 55, was having problems. Due to his heroin addiction and associations with known criminals, he'd recently lost his gaming license and his ties to the casino. His wife Doris had moved out, taking the couple's daughter, Bonnie, after learning of Ted's affair with a topless dancer named Sandra Murphy. Just before his death, he discovered that Sandra was cheating on him with a man named Rick Tabish. On September 17, 1998, Ted was found dead from a combination of Xanax, heroin, and Valium. He'd recently bought 12 pieces of tar heroin from a street drug dealer, and had a Xanax prescription from his next-door neighbor, a doctor. Police believed the scene was staged by Sandra Murphy and Rick Tabish, who wanted Ted's money (after losing his gaming license, Ted had taken all his gold out of the Horseshoe safe and buried it in a 12 foot deep underground vault in Pahrump, Nevada). In 1999, Sandra and Rick were found guilty of murder, but the verdict was overturned. After a second trial, they were acquitted of the murder, but found guilty of conspiring to commit and committing burglary and/or grand larceny. Rick served 11 years; Sandy was sentenced to time served. This episode contains testimony from the second trial, in May 2005, featuring two of Sandy's gossipy beauticians, hairdresser Georgia Gastone and Michelle Gillian.

The history of Las Vegas is jammed full of so many great stories about the mob and their involvement in the city but for this episode of the podcast, we're going in-depth on one that you might be be very familiar with. Originally hailing from a small town in Texas that doesn't even exist anymore, Benny Binion rose to become a kingpin of the Las Vegas casino scene, creating a legacy that's lasted well beyond his death in the late 1980's. Joining me to share Binion's story is Geoff Schumacher, Vice President of Exhibits & Programs at The Mob Museum in Downtown Las Vegas. Geoff and I talked about what got Benny into gambling & organized crime, what prompted his move to Las Vegas from Dallas, the unique trends Benny set in the casino business, and how the Binion name lives on in Las Vegas today. To learn more about Benny Binion & his legacy, pick up a copy of Blood Aces: The Wild Ride of Benny Binion by Doug J. Swanson or I'll Do My Own Damn Killin' by Gary Sleeper. An Offer You Can't Refuse: the History of Organized Crime in the United States
In this BONUS EPISODE, Pettengill examines another Vegas pioneer, Lester "Benny" Binion. Whereas the Flamingo was designed to stimulate the senses, the Horseshoe strictly emphasized gambling in its purest form. Pettengill notes that Binion established practices that are now commonly associated with the Las Vegas experience such as comping, fine yet affordable food, and bottomless drinks for hard gamblers. And, true to the series, Benny Binion had unmistakable ties to organized crime in Las Vegas and beyond. As Pettengill points out, Benny Binion is a vivid reminder that the Mafia was never an exclusively Italian organization. It consisted of different races, ethnicities, and national origins. It even included Texans!

Episode Summary: My Dark Path podcast explores the fringes of history, science, and the paranormal. This episode is a continuation of the “Vegas Field Trip” where stories of eerie happenings are explored as a backdrop following different tragic and fatal events in the past.In this conversation, Thurkettle, Townsend, and Hodur explored hotel hallways, walking the floors of casinos ranging from some of the oldest to the biggest and most glamorous. Shared in this episode are more clips recorded by the team in the very places they were discussing in the pedestrian hallways around Bally's, on the main floor of the Luxor, or in a restaurant in Binion's. Episode HighlightsAbout today's conversation; More experiences of Thurkettle, Townsend, and Hodur in the dark tales of Las Vegas. The ghosts of Benny Binion's hotel. La Palazza Mansion; The Death House Ghosts from the sins of corporations; the MGM fire disaster. The Curse of the LuxorA few Celebrity ghosts.Zac Bagans' Haunted MuseumNotes:Three storytellers, Thurkettle, Townsend, and Hodur, rendezvoused in Sin City for a special My Dark Path field trip, recording clips of discussions had in key places surrounded by stories of supernatural happenings. The first clip was recorded in The El Cortez where the supposedly haunted room, 3300, sits in the historic wing our team was exploring. One of the biggest major criminal entities who made a fortune in driving the evolution of Las Vegas was Benny Binion; his hotel tells all about its ghosts. Despite being a convicted murderer and an experienced gambling hall boss even before his initial arrival to Vegas, there is a statue of Benny in Vegas today. His story started in Texas where he was born in 1904, but couldn't go to school due to chronic poor health. Hence, Benny got his education by accompanying his father, a horse trader, on trips throughout the wild, wild west where many fellow horse traders also gambled. As a teenager, Benny got more involved in the gambling business till he moved to El Paso where he began bootlegging and even committed murders, but walked scot-free based on his influence. When his destructive nature attracted attention beyond his influence, he moved to Las Vegas where he set up the Binion's Horseshoe Casino, leveraging higher stakes than other casinos to attract high rollers, as well as many other perks that transformed gambling in Vegas to what it would evolve to become today. In the end, the law caught up with Benny as he was arrested for tax evasion and lost his Nevada gaming license but "The hotel Apache", the only section of Binion's with its name restored, is the only hotel that will openly tell you it is haunted. At the front desk, there's a pamphlet describing its history of haunted encounters with a card to report yours; this list is on the Dark Path Website. Interestingly, most cases were reported in the same rooms or areas of the hotel, with no explanation from the hotel as to why. Another place in the suburbs known for supernatural events is the La Palazza Mansion also known as The Death Mansion, The Devil's Mansion, and The Hell House. Located in a residential neighborhood, miles from the Las Vegas strip, it was once owned by Tony “The Ant” Spilotro, who was an enforcer for one of the deadliest gangs in Vegas. Rumored to be the place where many of Tony's heinous acts were carried out, the house is also known for legends surrounding it like having dead bodies in the backyard and a drain in a room for spilled blood to flow out. La Palazza does not offer ghost tours but there are stories of previous owners like Chris Martinez, who led the Ghost Ad

Lonnie "Ted" Binion, son of the legendary casino magnate Benny Binion, was found dead in his home on September 17, 1998. At first, it was assumed to be an accidental overdose, but suspicion soon swirled around his decades-younger girlfriend's motives. Did Binion simply overdose? Or was it murder?
Benny Binion was an American gambling icon, career criminal, and convicted murderer who established illegal gambling operations. He moved his operations to Las Vegas and opened Binion's Horseshoe Casino. When he opened his casino, he saw immediate success and this upset everyone in the gambling scene. Benny eventually lost his gambling license and his sons had to step up and help run the casino. A man named Marvin Shumate set up a kidnapping/murder plot for Benny's son, Ted Binion. They ended up backing out of the plan, but Ted ended up being murdered later in his life and there may be buried treasures of his that haven't been found yet.https://www.drinkingthecoolaid.com/https://ratethispodcast.com/coolaid

What started out as a two-year project that would chroncle the history of the much-revered Texas Rangers, turned out to be a five-year journey that exposes "a cult of glory" that reveals horrific truths. Doug J. Swanson's book rips of the veneer of that glory, showing how there history is riddled with vile massacres of Native Americans, murdering Mexicans at random and terrorizing Blacks throughout the state. Swanson is the author most recently of Blood Aces: The Wild Ride of Benny Binion, the Texas Gangster Who Created Vegas Poker. He was for many years an investigative reporter and editor at The Dallas Morning News.

Guest: Doug J. Swanson is a veteran reporter and editor, he spent much of his carrier at the Dallas Morning News. Currently he is a research assistant professor of English at the University of Pittsburgh. He is the author of several books including Blood Aces: The Wild Ride of Benny Binion, The Texas Gangster who Created Vegas Poker. His new book is Cult Of Glory: The Bold And Brutal History Of The Texas Rangers. The post The History of the Texas Rangers appeared first on KPFA.
The Texas Rangers came to life in 1823, when Texas was still part of Mexico. Nearly 200 years later, the Rangers are still going, one of the most famous of all law enforcement agencies. Countless movies, television shows, and pulp novels have celebrated the Rangers as Wild West supermen. In many cases, they deserve their plaudits. But often the truth has been obliterated. In CULT OF GLORY: The Bold and Brutal History of the Texas Rangers (Viking) Doug J. Swanson does justice to the Rangers’ heroic moments while also showing how the white and propertied power structures of Texas used them as enforcers, protectors and for officially sanctioned violence. He demonstrates how the Rangers and their supporters have operated a propaganda machine that turned agency disasters and misdeeds into fables of triumph, transformed murderous rampages--including the killing of scores of Mexican civilians--into valorous feats, and elevated scoundrels to sainthood. This book documents, for the first time, the Rangers’ efforts to suppress the NAACP in Texas. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Doug J. Swanson was for many years an investigative reporter at the Dallas Morning News. He was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in feature writing, and a John S. Knight Journalism Fellow at Stanford University. Swanson currently teaches journalism in the Department of English at the University of Pittsburgh. His previous nonfiction book, Blood Aces: The Wild Ride of Benny Binion, the Texas Gangster who Created Vegas Poker, was published by Viking in 2014. Swanson spent five years researching and writing Cult of Glory, much of it in the Texas state archives. Some of the records he used have never been published. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/steve-richards/support
Benny Binion is probably a name that you are not aware of. His story doesn't get a lot of play in either the History or True Crime circles but take it from us, it's a crazy ride. Gambling, prostitution, murder, tax evasion...it really does have something for everyone. Well, unless you like believing in the justice system and expect murders to be punished for their crimes instead of becoming beloved figures....then you might want to avoid this one. Unless you like being outraged...then come on back in. Grab a drink, sit back, and enjoy Mr. Binion's wild ride in this episode of Hundred Proof History entitled Benny Binion: Poker in the Front, MURDER in the Rear! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/100proofhistory/message
4x World Champion Saddle Bronc Rider and ProRodeo Hall of Famer Clint Johnson joins the show to talk about the evolution of saddle bronc riding, how saddles have changed over the years and the hospitality of Benny Binion. Owner of Bloomer Trailers Randy Bloomer comes on the show to share the beginning of Bloomer Trailers, his relationship with 5x World Champion Bull Rider Sage Kimzey, and surviving the plane crash.
Paul Terry, Entertainer On this episode of Home with Alexis Michaud we speak with entertainer Paul Terry who plays Ed Sullivan in the Beatles Show in Las Vegas. Paul is one of those rare people who followed his dreams in life. From drumming and driving his way across the United States, to having his own talk show in Las Vegas interviewing Sammy Davis Jr., the Mamas and the Papas, and locals like Benny Binion to name a few, to doing stand-up comedy, and now playing Ed Sullivan in the Beatles Show at Planet Hollywood. In some ways, this week's subject could be considered the final bow of the Old West. Joel Jimenez makes his second appearance on the show for the story of a cowboy turned mogul. Born in 1904, Benny Binion started out as a rural horse trader (not a "swapper") and worked his way so deep through the world of crime that he came out on the other side. This episode includes an equine key party, rat vs. badger fights and inflatable guard chihuahuas. This episode has more entertainment and information than you can reasonable expect at this irresistible price point! First, we hear from Benny Binion. Actually, it's just us reading a monologue in some sort of accent, but it's very interesting. Then we dive headlong into Las Vegas news, including the Monte Carlo rebrand (it will soon be Park MGM) and various legal scandals going on at the moment. This week's listicle is 10 Cheapskate Las Vegas Keepsakes. Say that five times fast. We also chat about how much winnings are "abandoned" by players in Las Vegas slot machines. It's our final episode of the first season of the Vital Vegas Podcast, so don't miss a single gerund.

On episode 11 of Mixed Media: Dallas filmmaker Barak Epstein talks about the 10th anniversary release of his campy sexploitation comedy Prison-A-Go-Go! Then, Dallas Morning News investigative journalist Doug Swanson discusses the paperback release of his book, Blood Aces: The Wild Ride of Benny Binion, the Texas Gangster Who Created Vegas Poker (including an update on the movie rights). Finally, we debate the art and artifice of the ghostwriter as we discuss Chris Vognar's profile of celebrity ghostwriter David Ritz.
Doug Swanson interview on WAEC with Conn Jackson BLOOD ACES: The Wild Ride of Benny Binion, the Texas Gangster Who Created VegasThey say in Vegas you can't understand the town unless you understand Benny Binion—mob boss, casino owner, and creator of the World Series of Poker. Beginning as a Texas horse trader, Binion built a gambling empire in Depression-era Dallas. When the law chased him out of town, he loaded up suitcases with cash and headed for Vegas. The place would never be the same. Dramatic as any gangster movie, BLOOD ACES draws readers into the colorful world of notorious mobsters like Clyde Barrow and Bugsy Siegel. Given access to previously classified government documents, biographer Doug J. Swanson provides the definitive account of a great American antihero, a man whose rise from thugdom to prominence and power is unmatched in the history of American criminal justice.
As a child, Wendy relished the small frontier town of Las Vegas. But as a teenager in the 1970s, Wendy's troubled home life and rebellious spirit led her to the legendary Horseshoe Club on Fremont Street, where she hooked up with Ted Binion, youngest son of notorious gambling figure Benny Binion. Her affair with the casino scion soon devolved into dalliances with high-rolling gamblers and suitcase deliveries of cash to Midwest mobsters. Binion then passed off Wendy like a trophy to Tom Hanley, a man thirty-nine years older who nonetheless drew her affections and ultimately married her. In partnership with his sadistic son, Gramby, Tom was a mob hitman. Wendy became a terrified and silent witness to his numerous crimes. Authorities say Hanley may have been responsible for more than twenty murders over three decades. Vegas Rag Doll paints a compelling portrait of the final years of organized crime in Las Vegas. In a fascinating era when legitimate facades disguised dark secrets, Wendy had a front-row seat - and a knack for survival.
