I just wanted to reach out and say thank you for the kind mention on the latest episode of the podcast. It was very unexpected but really made my day. Thank you too for all the great work you Terry and Geoff do at Scale Model Podcast and for all your tireless efforts to promote the hobby. Wheels are now on and just a few more things to do. Airbrushes are on the way back from Badger. Looking forward to getting them back.Got a Tamiya 1/48 Sherman Firefly for the 48 hour build in March. Nice looking kit.Geoff - finished off the IBG 1/72 IAR80 and wrote the article on it for IPMS Canada, although you may never see it. Bottom line: very nice kit. Continued on the old Revell 1/72 Arado what if Amerika bomber. I couldn't find my lead weights, so I decided to do it in flight, perhaps dropping bombs over the NYC skyline, although in light of recent international events, I may have to find a red state with a recognizable skyline as a base! I wonder if anyone makes a 3D file of Mar a Lago?Terry: Work continues apace on the Moosaroo. The shadowbox is coming along nicely. I hope to be done shortly. The Phalanx is looking good, not much more on this either but I've said that for a month now. I do need to get a new windscreen for the Wingsy Claude, it broke in half in the bag. It is quite thin plastic.***************************************WHAT WE ARE READINGStuart - I've been in a reading kick lately instead of spending as much time on social media. Finished Titan and Moonseed by Stephen Baxter, now moving on to a collection of short stories by him called Traces.Geoff - I've been ploughing through a complete collection of Scale Airplane Modeller magazine and been fascinated by the fact that model debates never seem to change! Prices are too high, people who just collect kits, thus raising market prices for builders, are evil, who needs fancy new paints, IPMS judging sucks, etc. The UK magazine was quite parochial, and although there was a ton of good information on UK aircraft, they do get a tad stuck on themselves - back in 1988 at least.Terry: Apparently I've fallen behind Stuart! I'm halfway through Stephen Baxter's Titan. Also reading the first series of Bleach Manga. It tracks very close to the anime.***************************************SPONSOR AD #2Seans Custom Model Tools***************************************TopicHello Gentlemen!I have a show discussion topic for you all to ponder: SCALE WARS!The premise is as simple as it is fictional. Imagine I have hired each of you as a consultant to my brand new (again, fictional) scale model manufacturing company. I want to shake up the injection-molded kit industry and I'm relying on your knowledge and expertise. I am not interested in which kit you want made that either doesn't exist yet or is in need of a new tooling. Instead, I want to know your opinions on scale.I am tasking you each individually with two assignments in this discussion. Time and money are not considerations here (the most fictional part of all). You MUST eliminate a standard/popular modeling scale from a genre of your choosing and justify your choice (for the snarky-minded amongst you, “box scale” does not count). Or “They shouldn't have picked that scale.”You SHALL replace the eliminated scale by adding a new scale for any modeling genre of your choice that you believe is not represented well in the industry — or even at all — and you must tell me why I should invest in your idea. Or “Why they should have picked this scale instead.”Remember, in this scenario you are a pool of consultants competing with each other to have your pitch chosen — so bring your A game to your arguments!I know modelers can have strong opinions about their preferred scale(s) so I hope this is taken in the spirit of fun but if a friendship or two gets dented - well, we can't let that stand in the way of progress.Good luck and may the best arguments win!Rick BakerScale Model Outlier Terry's Suggestion:I say we go to a Roman Numeral system, essentially a decimal system.I is 1:1.V is 1:5X is 1:10L is 1:50C is 1:100D is 1:500M is 1:1000 I suppose you could get larger if you need, for things like starships.***************************************THINGS WE'VE SEEN3D Wild building a 1/200 C5 GalaxyVince Hoffman restoring another RC Tank. The annual pilgrimage to Mecca, in Saudi Arabia, is something millions of people look forward to as an immensely spiritual experience. A main pillar of Islam, Muslims try to do it at least once in their lives, if they are physically and financially able. Saudi Arabia says 1.8 million people took part in Hajj this year. It coincided with a heatwave where temperatures reached more than 50C. Some 1,300 people died, many of those due to the intense heat. Three Muslims - from Kenya, the United States and Saudi Arabia – share their experiences of Hajj, including spiritual enlightenment, overcrowding, bereavement and sexual harassment.
Can Saudi Arabia balance tradition with safety as the climate crisis deepens? Nearly 2 million people braved temperatures exceeding 50C to visit the holiest city in Islam this month. At least 1,300 of them died. So what went wrong? And what does the future hold for Hajj, as attendance numbers, and temperatures, continue to soar?Caitríona Perry speaks to BBC Religion Editor Aleem Maqbool and our Egypt correspondent Sally Nabil. The Global Story brings you trusted insights from BBC journalists worldwide. Devina Gupta takes a food tour of her home city of Delhi to see how people are adapting to rising summer temperatures. In May this year the city saw a record temperature of almost 50C, and knowing what to eat in such heat can be a challenge. The changing climate is sparking innovative recipes in restaurant kitchens and bringing traditional practices back to people's kitchens. Devina tries old favourites at street markets, a modern twist on a classic drink at a high end restaurant and is (almost) convinced that a vegetable she has hated since childhood might work wonders in the heat. She hears from public health expert Dr Samar Husayn about why the cold, sweet treats you might reach for on a hot day aren't always the best. And she sees the difference between how those who have air-conditioned homes and those who don't are coping. July 2023 was world's hottest month on record, with extreme temperatures and weather patterns making global headlines. We asked colleagues from the language services how they had been covering the story. BBC Arabic's North Africa correspondent Bassam Bounenni reported on the heatwave in Tunisia, and the wildfires that spilled over from Algeria. BBC Korean's Damin Jung shares the stories of South Korea's extreme heat and torrential rains, which led to several deaths and severely disrupted the international Scout Jamboree. And Haider Ahmed reported from Iraq for BBC Arabic about the life of a Baghdad baker, working with temperatures hitting 50C outside and 60C inside. Miami Vice and jai alai Jai alai is the world's fastest ball game. It originated in the Basque region of Spain, and became synonymous with the ‘Miami vice' era of drug violence and excess of 1970s and 80s, with packed stadiums hosting millionaires, celebrities, and mobsters. BBC Mundo's Atahualpa Amerise charts the changing fortunes of the game. Sexism and misogyny in Pakistan Sexist attitudes in Pakistan have been in the spotlight after a senior minister called female leaders of the opposition PTI party “trash and leftovers”. For BBC Urdu, Saher Baloch has been reporting on the fierce backlash that followed. This week we look into all the dirty details on Dung beetles including how they saved Australia! Support the show -> patreon.com/user?u=46499107 IG: https://www.instagram.com/insects4fun/ FB: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100085443614825 Email: Insectsfordummies@gmail.com Music supported by Lofi Girl Transcript: Welcome back to episode 48 of Insects for Fun! Technically there are 49 episodes but I didn't count for some reason a long time ago and I'm just sticking with it, the same way today's insect sticks itself to dung! Today is a listener request from Donna wanting to learn more about Dung beetles! Intro: It turns out there are a ton of Dung beetles, so much so that they are divided into four different categories and spread out through multiple families of beetles. They all belong to one superfamily though, called Scarabaeoidea which houses around 35,000 species of beetles with a couple hundred being added every year. And yes dung beetles are actually scarab beetles and are depicted in Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs but we'll talk more about that later. The four types of dung beetles are: rollers, tunnelers, dwellers, and stealers, and as you can probably guess it has everything to do with how they use dung. Roller's are probably the most well known out of the dung beetles and these ones are your stereotypical dung ball rolling beetles. In scientific literature many people refer to them as telecoprids which derives from the words tele as in distance, like a telephone and then coprid which comes from the genus of true dung beetles known as copris. These beetles can roll dung balls up to 50 times their own size and are willing to go the distance, to find a suitable place to bury it and use it for food or eggs. Tunnelers bury the dung where it was found, and are referred to as endocoprids with endo meaning within. These beetles set up camp underneath dung patties, and will pull dung from the surface down into their holes where they'll use it as a food source and place to lay eggs. Dwellers don't move the dung at all. They just live in it wherever it is found, and are referred to as paracoprids with the prefix para meaning near or alongside. These dung beetles run the highest risk of getting trampled or eaten by another animal. Stealers are as you can imagine the thieves in all of this, and they aren't doing it for justice. These dung beetles are referred to as kleptocoprids with the prefix klepto meaning impulse to steal with no real reason. These beetles wait out for opportune moments to steal dung balls from other rollers, and use it for their own gain. They're evil nature is even found in the larvae which actually kill other larvae that were already in the dung ball. As you can tell each type of dung beetle is not limited to a specific genera or family because all the beetles above come from the copris genus That being said, most dung beetles have a similar shape and that would be a very compact, round and hard looking body with a much smaller head. They come in many sizes though with some being as large as 7cm and the smallest being as small as 3.4mm. Fun fact: The strongest insect is a dung beetle scientifically called Onthophagus taurus, and can pull dung up to 1,114 times its own weight. That's like having a person pulling 6 double decker buses… Life Cycle, and food source: The life cycle of a dung beetle begins like most beetles going through complete metamorphosis starting as an egg and then going through a larval and pupal stage before emerging as an adult. The only major difference is that dung beetles rely exclusively on Dung to do it. The true dung beetles within the subfamily scarabaeinae feed on dung only while other dung beetles may actually feed on other decaying matter or even fruits and mushrooms. But all dung beetles use poo for the completion of their life cycles by laying eggs in it and having their larvae develop off of it. The truth is dung beetles can get everything they need in terms of nutrients and even hydration from dung which is kind of insane to think about. This is actually why if dung gets too hard and dry it becomes unusable to beetles. In places like Africa for example the rainy season increases dung beetle populations. It should also be stated that not all dung is equal and certain species of dung beetles prefer veggie patties over omnivore or beef patties, and! They even go as far as to prefer dung from specific animals. For example in Australia almost all of the 500 species of native dung beetles prefer marsupial poo and won't touch cow patties or dung produced by other mammals. This actually caused a big problem when cattle were introduced into Australia in 1788. One cow can produce up to 12 cow patties in a day, now imagine thousands of cows, millions of cows, and having their dung just sit on the ground not going anywhere. This was not only a big eyesore, but it was breeding millions and millions of bush and buffalo flies which both feed on mammals for nourishment causing sores and irritation. Eventually a Hungarian entomologist named George came to Australia and proposed introducing dung beetles from other places like Hawaii and Africa which are well versed in cleaning up cow patties. The project started in 1965 and ran until 1985 introducing hundreds of thousands of dung beetles from 4 species. Today at least two of the four species still remain active in Australia and the number of bush flies dropped by 90 percent. (wow) There are actually 29 species of introduced dung beetles currently in Australia which are all helping keep the bush flies and buffalo flies down as well as keeping the land fertile. Behaviors: Earlier we talked about behaviors differentiating each of the four kinds of dung beetles, so now I want to go into some more specialized behaviors. For example dung rollers in Africa have evolved a behavior of sitting on their dung ball and wetting their front legs with a regurgitated liquid to cool themselves down when the sands reach temperatures over 50C. This behavior is repeated more and more with elevated temperatures. Another cool behavior seen in ball rollers specifically is something called an orientation dance. The beetles will often stand atop their dung balls and do a “dance” but to me it looks more like a ground survey, turning around and looking at their surrounding before hopping off and rolling their load, and turns out this is in fact what its for. They are also known to do this sort of surveying when the ground isn't flat because bumpy roads can easily derail the direction of a ball and dung beetles like to roll their dung balls in a straight line away from the source so as to not end up in crowded areas. Why avoid the crowds? Well, dung beetles like other beetles have a habit of fighting each other, and it's much safer to avoid other beetles than risk losing your dung ball. In fact rollers actually don't usually have horns or any large exterior weaponry because it slows them down and makes it more difficult to get away. Rollers want to get the goods and get out as soon as possible. Now continuing on the topic of navigation there is one very special dung beetle in Africa which is known to use the Milky Way! This beetle scientifically known as Scarabaeus satyrus is able to navigate even on moonless nights by orienting itself along a straight path using the milky way as a guide. It doesn't rely on other stars or even the moon, and studies have repeatedly shown that this beetle can do it under a variety of conditions. That being said, if the sky is cloudy or there is a lot of light pollution then the beetle gets lost and can't accurately navigate at night. Tunnelers on the other hand don't have any navigational problems, but they do have the struggles of one on one combat, which is often why these beetles do have horns. Even the females of some species are armed with horns because they have to fight too, but for precious resources. This arms race of who has the better horns can lead to some crafty sneak tactics. A classic case of brawn versus brain comes into play with tunneler species in the genus Onthophagus which we mentioned earlier as having the strongest insect. Males of this genus are often horned and have to fight off invading males who want to mate with a female, but some of these males have evolved to look more like females and they can sneakily enter the females den by making a backdoor while the horned males are on guard or in a battle. It was actually found that the sneaky males have greater testes than those of the horned males, because less genetic resources were placed into making a large clumsy horn. Rollers and Tunnelers often form pairs when it comes to breeding. Rollers will give a dung ball to a female if he sees one and if she accepts then they both will roll it away together to start a den. Tunnelers on the other hand don't have to travel and males will search out a female's den, and either stake it as their own or sneak in through a back door. Defenses and Predators: Dung beetles are often preyed upon by other larger animals like birds, mammals, reptiles and even other insects sometimes, but they don't usually have any special techniques for saving themselves. In general their go to defense is to run away or hide, but to be fair living in or smelling like dung is already a pretty solid defence. Lore: Now let's get back into the whole scarab beetle thing, which is to say that dung beetles belong to the scarab beetle family, and they have been viewed with great power by ancient egyptians. In fact one species called scarabaeus sacer was viewed as a sacred beetle and is found in many paintings. The image is linked to the meaning of transformation and has strong ties to the god of the sun known as Khepri. These beetles are often depicted as carrying the sun, and were believed to spawn from nothing. Before we end the episode I have some quick house-keeping news. It's been a week of wild weather around the world, with extreme heat in North America, China and in Southern Europe. Some parts of the US and China have exceeded 50C - while parts of Southern Europe face temperatures in the mid-40s.Temperatures like these are expected to become common during summer months due to our warming climate - but what does 50C heat do to the human body? And can we adapt? On this week's ClimateCast Tom Heap speaks to science correspondent Thomas Moore who has spent time as a 'guinea pig' in a 50C heat chamber to measure how his body reacted. They're joined by Dr Anna Moore who specialises in how heat impacts the human body and explains why the climate crisis is also a health crisis.Producer: Emma Rae WoodhouseEditor: Paul Stanworth

Finland has topped the list of the world's happiest countries for the past six years. That is according to the World Happiness Report. This always surprises countries like South Africa, where we consider plenty of sunshine and our friendly people to be the key ingredients of happiness. In contrast, Finland has long dark winters. In Lapland, daylight is restricted to a few hours in winter, and temperatures can drop to -50C. So, apart from their love of the outdoors, which we share - what is their secret ingredient for happiness? Kristiina Hietsaari, Senior Director at Visit Finland told BizNews why the Finns are so content, how happiness is becoming an export product, and why they don't mind paying tax. – Linda van Tilburg Learn more about your ad choices. Women are able to recall details of sexual assault and rape with accuracy, even if they have drunk – moderate amounts of alcohol .A study conducted at the University of Birmingham demonstrated that women who had drunk alcohol up to the legal limit for driving were able to recall details of an assault in a hypothetical scenario, including details of activities to which they had, and had not, consented. Heather Flowe, Professor of Psychology led the study. A year ago, British Army officer and physiotherapist Captain Preet Chandi (AKA Polar Preet) made history as the first woman of colour to complete a solo expedition in Antarctica. Now she's just broken another world record: the longest ever solo and unsupported Polar ski expedition. The 33-year-old travelled 922 miles across Antarctica, beating the previous record of 907 miles set by Henry Worsley, a retired Lieutenant Colonel, in 2015. Having spent over 70 days on her own, trekking in temperatures as cold as -50C, she speaks to Anita Rani about how she endured such a physical and mental challenge. Is your partner's ex a significant person in your life? Are they someone you tolerate - or are they someone whose company you genuinely enjoy? Would you even go so far as to call them a friend? Or even a best friend? The friendship between popstar Katy Perry and the model Miranda Kerr attracted attention this week. Why…because Katy Perry is engaged to Orlando Bloom - who Miranda used to be married to. Katy Perry posted about her friend on Instagram calling her her “sister from another mister” and stating “I love our modern family”. So how realistic or welcome is it to be friends with your partner's ex? We hear from the journalist Esther Walker. Adding higher levels of folic acid (otherwise known as vitamin B9) to all flour and rice would stop hundreds more UK babies being born with lifelong disabilities. That's what a group of leading scientists are saying. Women in the UK are advised to take a daily folic supplement before becoming pregnant, to reduce the risk of giving birth to babies with severe abnormalities called neural tube defects, such as spina bifida. But many don't. Anita Rani is joined by Neena Modi, Professor of Neonatal Medicine at Imperial College London. Best known more recently for her portrayal of River Song, the wife and occasional companion of Dr Who, actor Alex Kingston is currently on stage in Stratford-upon-Avon as part of the Royal Shakespeare Company's production of The Tempest. Women playing what are regarded as traditionally male roles on stage is not unusual these days but Alex explains to Anita why making Prospero a woman and mother surviving exile on a small island makes that role much more powerful. This is the creamiest custard/ice cream you will ever taste. Recipes like this are commercially unviable so impossible to find unless you make it yourself. Follow along and experience Matt's rich custard (and ice cream!). Ingredients 600ml cream (thickened cream from Woolworths is perfect) 150ml water 6 egg yolks 1/2 cup xylitol (or 1/2 cup sugar) 1/4 teaspoon guar gum (only if proceeding to ice cream) Large pinch of salt 1 tablespoon of butter 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract (alcohol base) 1 vanilla bean (optional) Equipment Silicon spatula Sieve/strainer Pot Glad wrap Digital temperature probe Ice cream maker (only if proceeding to ice cream) Method 1. Mix guar gum evenly through xylitol/sugar (guar gum only required for ice cream). 2. Combine cream, water, salt, xylitol mix and vanilla, in a pot. 3. While gently stirring, heat pot to fully dissolve ingredients (about 60C is fine) 4. Allow pot to cool below ~50C while preparing egg yolks in a mixer bowl. 5. Gently whisk egg yolks while dribbling cream mix in. Dribble slowly at first to prevent heat-shocking the eggs, gradually speeding up pouring in the remaining liquid. 6. Pour liquid mix into a pot through a sieve to remove any lumps of egg and guar gum. 7. Add butter and scraped vanilla bean seeds to custard and heat to an absolute maximum of 83C, making sure to slow down heat and stir well as you approach 80-83C. If any part of the mixture gets to 85+ it will set and make a lumpy custard! 8. Once 83C is reached, cool custard quickly to get it out of the danger zone (75C+) Hot custard is now ready to eat, or proceed to the next step. 9. FOR COLD CUSTARD: pour into a bowl and cover with glad wrap, pressing the glad wrap down to touch the surface of the custard, which will prevent condensation and skins forming. Cool for hours in a refigerator. 10. FOR ICE CREAM: pour cold custard (refrigerate overnight) into your ice cream maker and follow the instructions. The colder the custard to begin with, the better the ice cream. 11. Remove ice cream from maker which will be at soft serve consistency. Freeze overnight for a hard, supermarket style ice cream. TROUBLESHOOTING Ice cream too hard/soft after freezing overnight? Adjust cream/water ratio. Higher fat = softer final result. More water = firmer ice cream. Still can't get ice cream soft enough? Cheat by adding a dash of vodka before churning in ice cream maker. Icicles in your ice cream? You didn't freeze the custard fast enough. Make sure the mix is cold as possible before churning. Grainy ice cream? Your temperatures are wrong. Either you went too hot in the final cook separating some of the fats and creating a grainy texture. OR you didn't dissolve all the ingredients properly in the first cook - heat higher and longer.

India and Pakistan have experienced their hottest April in 122 years. Temperatures are nearing 50C. Such extreme heat dries up water reservoirs, melts glaciers and damages crops. It's also deadly. Ian Sample hears from Pakistan reporter Shah Meer Baloch about the situation on the ground, and speaks to Indian heat health expert Abhiyant Tiwari about what such temperatures do to the body and how south Asia is adapting to ever more frequent – and ever more extreme – heatwaves.. Where do you keep ice? In the freezer, of course. That's what scientists might have thought when they were looking for a safe place to store ice from mountain glaciers from around the world. They've decided to store ice in Antarctica because global warming is causing some of the glaciers in places like the Alps to melt.Jerome Chappellaz of the French National Centre for Scientific Research is involved in creating an ice vault there. He says: "We are probably the only scientific community whose archive is in danger of disappearing from the face of the planet. If you work on corals, on marine sediments, on tree rings, the raw material is still here and will be for many centuries".And why do scientists need to study ice from the Alps, for example? Ice formed on the summit of a mountain is made of layers of snow accumulated over thousands of years. Trapped air bubbles contain samples of the atmosphere that existed when that ice was formed. Ice is a record of climate, according to polar oceanographer Mark Brandon from the Open University in Britain. He says: "We know carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is higher now than in the last three million years".Researchers use this kind of data to build computer models and try to predict what might happen in the future. The ice vault will be housed in a snow cave at the Concordia Research Station, which is operated by scientists from France and Italy. The ice samples will be sealed in bags and placed 10m below the surface, at a constant temperature of -50C. This will put the scientists' minds at rest. Commercial freezers break down, power failures happen and losing the ice samples would be a disaster. Nobody wants to see a mine of scientific knowledge lost for ever in a giant puddle.glaciers (复数)冰河,冰川global warming 全球变暖melt 融化vault 穹窿,拱顶,地下储藏室coral 珊瑚raw material 原材料trapped 被困住的sample 样品,标本atmosphere 大气record 记录,证明polar 极地的oceanographer 海洋学家carbon dioxide 二氧化碳data 数据computer model 计算机模型to seal 封住,密封put (their) minds at rest 使(他们)安心、放心puddle 水坑
Global warming means the world will need a lot more air conditioning - but will the AC just make global warming even worse? The Middle East already experiences peak temperatures over 50C, as the Kuwaiti social media influencer Ascia Alshammiri testifies. And things are only set to get worse. Ed Butler speaks to climatologist George Zittis, who says urban temperatures could hit 60C later this century, which combined with rising humidity could render some places uninhabitable. In any case, it means a boom for the air conditioning industry. But AC itself is a major source of greenhouse gases, as Radhika Lalit of clean energy think tank RMI explains. So are there tech solutions available to break this vicious circle? We hear from two entrepreneurs - Kevin O'Toole of Exergyn, and Aaswath Raman of SkyCool Systems. British Army officer and physiotherapist Preet Chandi has made history as the first woman of colour to complete a solo expedition in Antarctica. 'Polar Preet' trekked 700 miles in 40 days, facing temperatures of -50C, poor visibility and fatigue along the way. She used skis, and dragged a 90kg pulk (a sled) for between 10-12 hours a day. Preet catches up with us from the Union Glacier camp in Antarctica. 'Collector culture' - the swapping, collating and posting of nude images of women without their consent - is on the rise. But unlike revenge porn, it is not a crime. Now survivors are demanding a change in the law. To understand why Anita is joined by Professor of Law at Durham University, Clare McGlynn and Zara Ward, senior practitioner at the Revenge Porn Helpline. Cecil Sharp is known as the godfather of English folk music. In a bid to preserve the English folk song at the turn of the twentieth century, when many in the musical world didn't believe England had a musical tradition of its own, he collected and memorialised thousands of traditional English folk songs from rural communities in England. However, less is known about the people he collected these songs from. FOLK is a new play at Hampstead Theatre in London written by Nell Leyshon, the British dramatist and novelist born in Glastonbury, Somerset. She tells us the true story of Louie Hooper and Lucy White, two half-sisters from Somerset who Cecil Sharp collected hundreds of songs from. A UK tech company is pitching to provide security for women out alone at night who fear for their safety. Drone Defence is hoping to secure government funding to deliver AI drones fitted with spotlights and a thermal camera which would be summoned on an app by an individual who are concerned a predator may be near by. Could this be a solution to a recent survey which showed one in five women fear going out at night alone or does it present a serious privacy risk without tackling the underlying issue of violence against women? We talk to Richard Gill the founder of Drone Defence and to Silkie Carlo the Director of Big Brother Watch. Born in Bristol and raised in Lagos, Nikki May is Nigerian-British. The number of extremely hot days every year when the temperature reaches 50C has doubled since the 1980s, a global BBC analysis has found. They also now happen in more areas of the world than before, presenting unprecedented challenges to human health and to how we live. Sexism Stops Here! Challenging the System! For anyone that's been through or going through the grievance procedure, an employment tribunal or ill-health retirement, you'll know how arduous a journey it is and the impact it has. Today I'm talking with Rhona Malone. Rhona is a former officer from Police Scotland and joined the job as a single mum of 3 kids. She had a great career and really enjoyed what she was doing, working with some fantastic people. A little later in her service, she qualified as a firearms officer and joined the firearms team. Now she tells the story far better than I ever could, which you'll pick up from the intro, however suffice to say, she had to retire on ill-health and is taking the force to an employment tribunal which takes place in August 2021. Rhona has been through an incredibly challenging time and this is a really hard hitting interview. I know from experience of supporting 2 officers through the employment tribunal process, that it takes a massive toll on your mental health, takes such a long time and also has a massive impact financially and Rhona has shown such resilience. Rhona's story is truly inspirational and with the support of Blue Light Leavers and key members of the group, and also the Police Firearms Officers Association, Rhona has since gone on to do amazing things, including owning her own business as a Property Personal Assistant. Rhona is now also supporting other female officers who've been subjected to sexual discrimination and victimisation and she gives details in the episode of how to connect. It was 30C when we recorded the episode, so please excuse the birds singing in the background as I recorded outside of the 50C studio! You can also visit the website and blog on www.bluelightleavers.com and download my free NEW and UPDATED guide to LinkedIn for Police Officers for 2021! You can listen to the podcast on shift, walking the dog, pottering about, and do it on your phone, desktop, laptop, or tablet, anywhere and whenever suits you, pause and play and they're all completely free! You can now even ask Alexa to 'Play Blue Light Leavers Podcast' and up it pops! Whats going on? Today we sit down to discuss, Team USA lose to France 83-76 in its first game of group play
The climate change is clearly seen in northern USA and Canada as the temperatures nearly reach 50C. Houses in this part of the world are deigned to retain the heat. The houses and the people within them cannot survive these temperatures as hundreds die due the heat. We also look at capturing the Carbon Dioxide produced when making beer, capturing this and growing Algae, which in turn give off oxygen gas. The Carbon Dioxide from the fermentation of just one six pack of beer takes a tree two full days to absorb.A craft beer producer in Sydney Young Henry's has teamed up with a University to help develop and New system. We talk about how this could be adapted to other industries. Finally we look at how Climate change can increase the summer insect season and lead to lots more insects, which as vectors can then transmit more Malaria and Dengue Fever to more and more people, perhaps as many as 8 Million or more so a year.
A blistering heat wave hit Canada and parts of the US this week, sending temperatures to dangerous highs of nearly 50C. That's the most recent thing you have heard about how bad and how fast the climate change is. Our newspapers and social media are full of it. Climate change is real. We have to act now. The good news: We are not alone. We are all in this together. People, communities, cities, businesses, schools, faith groups and other organizations are taking action. We're fighting like our lives depend on it — because they really do. In a world of more than seven billion people, each of us is a drop in the bucket. But with enough drops, we can fill any bucket. This week, we're going to talk about the “Top 10 Ways You Can Help Fight Climate Change” in no specific order. I hope you guys really enjoy and find it informative. Reasoning. I have a file server with Slackware running on a Pi4. I wanted to make themovies and TV Shows easily accessible on the TV without using a DVD or Blu rayplayer. It would give my wife and I a chance to sit and watch a show without muchfuss. The latest show we are on is Sue Thomas F.B. Eye.The main character, Sue has been deaf from about the age of 4 years. She is adept at reading lips and learned to speak despite being deaf. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sue_Thomas:_F.B.Eye Hardware. The Pi4 is enclosed in a stripped out power supply that died on me. The fanstill worked, so I wired it to the Pi on the 5v line. It runs at half thespeed it was designed for, but that makes it run almost silent. With theheatsinks added, stays about 35C when idle and 50C when encoding video. Pi Networking. I have 2 Pi's connected via ethernet. One is on 192.168.2.5 with a gateway of192.168.2.6, with the other on 192.168.2.6 with a gateway of 192.168.2.5.Essentially just a crossover network. The reason for this is running Kodi on Pi4has choppy video, but is better at running video encoding. So I linked it to aPi3 to run Kodi via a samba share from the Pi4. Used OSMC for the kodi interface. It was the distribution that was stable on my Pi and booted right to the Kodiinterface. https://osmc.tv/download/ lsblk - List block devicesdd status=progress if=osmc.img of=/devsdX Installing Slackware. Here is a more concise way to go about it. https://discourse.osmc.tv/t/solved-setting-ip-static/1439/14 It seems OSMC uses connman, so in order to create an ethernet static IP: Create a config file with your editor: sudo vim /var/lib/connman/osmc.config Add the following contents: [global] Name = OSMC Description = OSMC static network configuration [service_osmc] Type = ethernet IPv4 = 192.168.0.21/255.255.255.0/192.168.0.1 Nameservers = 8.8.8.8,8.8.4.4 Make sure to change the IPv4 line to match your own network/netmask/gateway and Nameservers to use the ones you want. Reboot your RPi or restart the connman service: sudo systemctl restart connman If you opt to restart connman, you’ll loose the connection.

During the most frigid week imaginable in Edmonton, Daniel Romano rolled into town on tour with Ancient Shapes. The mercury dropped to -40C and the wind chill brought the temperature down to -50C but inside the Rec Room it was nice and warm as Jeff sat down to chat with one of Canada’s most respected artists. From Attack In Black, to his solo work, to Ancient Shapes, they discussed his many projects, past and present, and how he approaches them. They also talked about his massive output of material, how he manages to keep everything organized and what we can expect from him in 2020. Finally, they ran through the rapid fire and Jeff learns a few things we never knew about Mr. Romano.Recorded January 17th, 2020.Track used with full permission from Daniel Romano. Background Music:Atlantis Jazz Ensemble - UndercurrentsUsed with permission from Atlantis Jazz Ensemble and Marlow Recordshttp://www.marlowrecords.com
Australia is undergoing an unprecedented Heat Wave and it is causing mass fish kills along the Western Australian Coastline. Air Temperatures above 50C are occurring for over 5 days, which has never happened in this region since they started monitoring air temperature in 1993 via satellites. Higher temperatures do occur during the summer, but not until mid-summer in February. Higher temperatures in December worry researchers as they have never observed these temperatures this early. Higher temperatures and mass fish kills make you wonder why more governments are not taking more Climate Change action. I hope that protests such as the Climate Strikes will inspire more people who want action to reduce Green House Gases will run for office in the near future. Show #591 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 25th September 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. NEW PORSCHE TAYCAN REVIEW "The Taycan not only spearheads Porsche’s electric vehicle strategy - the Taycan Cross Turismo will follow in 2020, before which the next Macan will go fully electric - but will also provide the platform for Audi Sport’s electric vehicle livelihood when the e-Tron GT debuts later this year." says Stuart Gallagher for evo.co.uk: "Porsche calls it a Performance Battery Plus with 93.4kWh, which doesn’t quite have the same ring to it as a Mezger flat-six. But this powerpack is connected to an electric motors on the front and rear axles, the former driven by a single speed transmission, the latter by an innovative two-speed unit." And here's something which I didn't read about in all the pre-press: "Simply wait for the batteries to reach operating temperature of around 50C (achieved after around 15-20 mins of regular driving), put your left foot on the brake, right foot on the throttle wait for launch control to engage and go for it. Up to ten consecutive times." They note all the usual other things like the 800 volt battery, 0-60 in 2.6, 0-100 in 6.3, the quarter mile in 10.8. 270kW charging, carbon ceramic brakes, rear axle steering. The final quote from evo sums up electric cars in general: "The way in which it delivers its power and torque is borderline undetectable, speed building with no real effort or input required from the driver." Oh, and they couldn't resist ending the article with the three words: "your move, Tesla". https://www.evo.co.uk/porsche/porsche-taycan/201782/new-porsche-taycan-review-stuttgart-puts-its-stamp-on-the-electric VOLVO XC40 ELECTRIC VERSION TEASED AHEAD OF OCTOBER REVEAL "[Volvo] have chosen the XC40 to become Volvo’s very first production EV. Announced in April and teased here ahead of its October full reveal" says motor1.com: "The Geely-owned marque says it will release more details about the pure electric crossover in the coming weeks, prior to a first public showing programmed for October 16. The XC40 sans a traditional engine will follow the recently launched plug-in hybrid model equipped with the T5 Twin Engine powertrain offering a combined 258 hp and 28.6 miles (46 kilometers) of electric range." https://www.motor1.com/news/372720/volvo-xc40-electric-teaser/ BMW X1 GETS PHEV VARIANT IN EUROPE, UP TO 35 MILES OF ELECTRIC RANGE "After introducing a plug-in hybrid version of its entry-level crossover for the Chinese market, BMW is now launching the model in Europe. The X1 xDrive25e is making its debut on the Old Continent, offering “a high level of driving pleasure and thrilling agility.” in our second MOtor1 article today: "Under the familiar skin of the X1 is a plug-in hybrid powertrain, which uses a 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine supported by an electric motor, specifically developed for this particular model. The gas unit generates 125 horsepower (92 kilowatts) and 162 pound-feet (220 Newton-meters) of torque, and is mated to a six-speed transmission channeling the power to the front wheels. What’s more important for a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, on a single charge of the 9.7-kWh battery pack, the X1 xDrive 25e can travel up to 35 miles (57 kilometers)" https://www.motor1.com/news/372729/bmw-x1-xdrive25e-phev-unveiled/ NOW HIRING: TESLA SEEKS TALENT AHEAD OF CHINA MASS PRODUCTION "Tesla is on a hiring spree in China for first-line technicians, software engineers and marketing experts, as the electric carmaker gears toward mass production at its Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai by the year's end." reports Nikkei.com: "The company began its Shanghai hiring through its official WeChat account on Sept. 1 and updated its latest job listing Tuesday. The job post suggests the company is assembling a factory firmware team which will be department to develop programmable hardware that controls the production line." And then we got an ElonTweet: "Tesla is building a major engineering team in China, incl heavy focus on software/firmware for factory & car. This includes original engineering of new factory processes & cars, Great engineers will only join if original engineering is supported, not just localization" https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Technology/Now-hiring-Tesla-seeks-talent-ahead-of-China-mass-production Nikkei continues: "The jobs listed on WeChat include first-line technicians, quality controllers, assembly experts and safety guards, among other factory operation roles. The company plans to interview candidates at an upcoming job fair on Thursday, signaling that mass production in Shanghai will begin soon." https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Technology/Now-hiring-Tesla-seeks-talent-ahead-of-China-mass-production TESLA STARTS MONITORING DATA USE AHEAD OF STARTING TO CHARGE FOR CONNECTIVITY "Tesla is starting to monitor data usage in its vehicles, which has always been free, but the automaker is now planning to start to charge for connectivity." writes electrek today: "some owners are reporting that Tesla is starting to add a data usage counter in their vehicle (hat tip to Andrew)" who posted a pic which said 0 of 50GB used. https://electrek.co/2019/09/24/tesla-monitoring-data-charge-connectivity/ HYUNDAI MOTORSPORT BEGINS TESTING WITH ALL-ELECTRIC VELOSTER N ETCR Hyundai Motorsport have completed the first on-track running with the new Veloster N ETCR, the company’s first electric race car project. The brand new car completed two days at the Hungaroring near Budapest last weekend, completing the test trouble-free. The days at the circuit – already an established part of the FIA WTCR and TCR Europe calendars – allowed the engineers to learn more about the chassis balance on the technical circuit, and to begin to harness the power from the mid-mounted electric motor to maximize performance and efficiency. Using the expertise in Touring Car racing shown in both the championship winning i30 N TCR and Veloster N TCR, the aim is to produce a similarly strong all-round package for when the ETCR category begins racing next year. MOTORCYCLE ‘SPEED FREAK’ ZEF EISENBERG SMASHES ELECTRIC WORLD SPEED RECORD "MADMAX Team Rider Zef Eisenberg raced in to the record books at the weekend (21-22 September 2019) setting four new motorcycle records at the Straightliners ACU/FIM (Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme) World Speed Records event at Elvington, North Yorkshire on board the Nottingham University Isle of Man TT zero bike." says electric cars report: "International multiple ACU Motorbike speed record holder and self-proclaimed ‘Speed Freak’ Zef Eisenberg achieved four FIM World records for an electric motorbike (unfaired), with an ‘average kilometre’ speed of 185mph, and peak GPS speeds of 197mph. He victoriously secured the title for the fastest electric motorbike bike in the world (naked – no fairing)." https://electriccarsreport.com/2019/09/motorcycle-speed-freak-zef-eisenberg-smashes-electric-world-speed-record/ EXXONMOBIL CEO DISMISSES ELECTRIC VEHICLES: ‘WHAT’S THE POINT?’ "Exxon CEO Darren Woods recently expressed his doubts about the transportation sector’s transition to electric vehicles. In comments during the 2019 Oil and Gas Climate Initiative meet, the CEO extended a rather blunt dismissal of EVs, suggesting that the zero-emissions vehicles will serve little purpose if they remained charged by a coal-powered grid." reports Teslarati: "“What’s the point of having electric vehicles that will end up being charged by power generated from coal,” Woods said. In the United States alone, data from the US Energy Information Administration reveal that less than a third of the electricity generated in the country was powered by coal in 2018. This number will likely decrease in the near future as well, with clean energy initiatives such as residential solar and battery systems becoming more popular. Katie-Jane L’Herpiniere has a passion for adventure, challenging her limits both physically and mentally, and exploring this wonderful world in which we live. After university Katie had the opportunity to build a career as a commercial model, on fashion shows for household names such as Marks and Spencer’s, Tony & Guy and Alexander McQueen, photo shoots and a number of Film and TV projects including having body-doubled for Cameron Diaz. Then in 2005, Katie met polar explorer Tarka L'Herpiniere, and they were quick to find they had little in common. Tarka was less than impressed with her manicured nails and face full of makeup, likewise, Katie did not see Tarka as the ‘all-action hero’ that his accolades suggest, more a really ‘odd’ Frenchman who seemed to find enjoyment in throwing himself into frozen lakes! It wasn’t long before the facades were broken and by 2006 Katie had left behind her life as a model and made the gigantic leap from exhibitionist to expeditionist. In 2007, after 167 days and 4500km Katie & Tarka, in an incredible feat of determination, became the first recognised people to walk unsupported the entire length of the Great Wall of China, from its western most terminus to its eastern most. From the completion of this challenge, Katie realised that any feeling of accomplishment, achievement or success is directly proportional to the effort, commitment and hardship put into achieving it. Having discovered this newfound inner strength, she has since gone on to fill her life with many more adventures. Including; the longest crossing of the Southern Patagonian Ice Cap by a woman, cycling across Africa on a vintage African bicycle with no brakes or gears unsupported, raced in the Transcontinental unsupported single stage 4000km bike race across Europe, lived in a floating tent in -50C on the Arctic Ocean, and has nearly lost her life on many numbers of occasions. Benny Parihar is the co-founder of CRYO, the fastest growing retail cryotherapy business in the world. He and his co-founder Kai Stubbe launched their first facility in the most unlikely location in the world. Dubai, UAE, known as the crown jewel of the middle east and home to a very thriving economy with a cosmopolitan population, proved to be a formidable testing ground for the concept of using cryotherapy as means of facilitating wellness and recovery from physiological ailments. Within a few months, the venture took off thanks to some savvy marketing and premium positioning. It turned out that people from the royal family to ordinary citizens loved the idea of being able to experience extreme winter conditions in a country that is known for having temperatures as high as 50C. In our conversation we discussed how they launched the business within 90 days of coming up with the concept, the many obstacles the faced in getting things right, their launch and positioning strategy, competing with larger companies in the space, creating vertically integrated businesses, international expansion via franchising and much more. I hope you listen, learn and take plenty of notes. We covered a great deal about the cryotherapy business. Resources www.cryo.com www.cryosc.com www.linkedin.com/in/bennyparihar
Last week I spoke with Lyndsay Kearns about a canister of bear spray that exploded in her car. It was a horrible situation and the damage to her car was significant. If you'd like to hear her interview, check out www.mountainnaturepodcast.com/ep033. During the podcast I mentioned bear spray safety containers sold by Kodiak Wildlife Products. I've since received one and decided to give it a test. Yesterday I placed it in a car parked in the hot sun with a thermometer inside the canister. I also placed an oven thermometer in the windshield to see how hot the interior of the car became after a few hours in the hot sun. The outside temperature was a scorching 28C, but the interior of the car, it reached 70C or a whopping 158F. When I picked up the bear safety container it was extremely hot to the touch. When I opened it to check the thermometer, it had exceeded its maximum temperature of 50C. The website says that it protects against "accidental impact and heat that could damage or discharge your bear spray canister". It's clear from testing that it does not keep the bear spray below the maximum storage temperature of 50C as shown on the label of the Sabre Max bear spray canister. Will it still protect your car in the case of a canister explosion? I contacted the manufacturer and they said that they had not specifically tested whether it would stop an exploding canister from piercing the container. They are considering using more 'cooler' style materials thought to try to reduce the chance that the temperatures keep climbing beyond dangerous levels. I'll keep you posted as this story evolves. Next up - wildlife crossings Wildlife Crossing structures are expanding and changing The wildlife crossing structures in Banff National Park are an amazing success story of protecting wildlife and people from high speed collisions along park highways. Studies have shown that a properly designed and implemented combination of highway fencing along with under and overpasses for wildlife can reduce animal vehicle collisions by up to 95%. Banff National Park led the way in terms of building the first series of under and overpasses along a major highway. Their studies have documented more than 200,000 individual animal crossings so there can be absolutely no doubt as to their effectiveness. The average cost of hitting wildlife can be very high, if not fatal. Deer impacts typically exceed $6,000 while moose average out at around $30,000 or more. Banff has shown that investing in wildlife is effective for wildlife and dramatically reduces loss of life along highways - both for people and wildlife. I remember in the early 1990s, we used to call the Trans Canada Highway between Banff and Lake Louise the meat grinder because of the number of people and animals that were being killed. Thankfully, we can now look at that same stretch of highway as an inspiration for other destinations to aspire to…and that's what I want to talk about today. The work that Banff has done has shown that not only do the structures reduce mortality but they dramatically increase connectivity as well. A large highway can have the effect of completely dividing a landscape into two. In the past 20 years, more and more research has shown that good habitat for wildlife is not good enough. We need corridors that allow for a steady stream of fresh genetic material to move through landscapes. In many cases, a stretch of road with as few as 3.2 deer-vehicle collisions per kilometre per year would actually see a net benefit by building structures. Studies have shown that in cases like this, the cost benefits of building the structures can quickly exceed any costs involved in their construction. In 2015, Banff saw a total of 19 moderate to large animals killed along the Trans Canada Highway. This was less than half of the 41 animals killed in 2006. The stats in Banff show an 80% reduction in wildlife collisions. Carnivores are seeing a huge reduction in deaths but the real winner seems to be elk. Virtually no elk die in fenced sections of highway in Banff as opposed to 100 or more prior to the fences being constructed. Today in Banff, there are a total of 44 different crossing structures of which six are overpasses and 38 underpasses. While Banff got the ball rolling, by 2010 the research had finally led to interest from other jurisdictions. That’s why in 2010, an organization known as Animal Road Crossings or ARC, sponsored a design competition designed to bring fresh ideas and potentially cost savings to the design and implementation of future crossing structures. Every dollar saved in the construction can help to move the political process towards a yes decision in terms of expanding the use of crossing structures to new destinations. In fact in a 2012 survey of U.S. State Department of Transportation professionals, 84% indicated that their state considers the building of crossing structures to improve safety and connectivity. Unfortunately, those numbers don't translate into implementation. Funding was the number one reason given for not including them in the planning of highways and upgrades to road systems. Despite resistance in some areas, other areas in Canada and the U.S. are going full-steam ahead with new projects. Now that the Trans Canada is twinned and fenced all the way through Banff National Park, crews are working hard on expanding the twinning and fencing through neighbouring Yoho. They are already working on both an overpass and an underpass just west of the British Columbia Border. Perhaps the most ambitious one at the moment is taking place along Interstate 90 in Washington State which runs between Seattle and Spokane. The first overpass is being built near Snoqualmie Pass, just an hour east of Seattle. Like the overpasses in Banff, it will eventually be a forest covered crossing. When the project is finished, there will be a total of 27 over and underpasses along a 24 km stretch of highway. Programs have also taken place or been started in Colorado, Utah, Montana, and Nevada. Jackson Hole, Wyoming is also looking into creating a series of structures as well. Florida has a long history of using crossing structures particularly to protect the endangered Florida panther and California has used them to protect desert tortoises. More and more, the value of these structures are being applied to a wider diversity of wildlife - even salamanders. In Waterton Lakes National Park, specially designed underpasses were built specifically for the long-toed salamander. In a study conducted in 2009, research showed the salamanders had suffered a 60% loss in population since 1994. By building the underpasses, 130 salamanders were able to safely cross the road, dramatically reducing highway mortality. Banff should be very proud of the role it has played in helping spread the word about fencing and crossing structures and their role in helping to reduce wildlife mortality. Over the next decade, we can hope to see them spread far and wide as new jurisdictions begin to add them to their normal planning process for highway improvement projects. After all, 200,000 animal crossings in Banff has to say something about their effectiveness, not to mention an 80% reduction in animal deaths caused by vehicles. Wildlife Crossings Next up…Bear 148 gets one more chance Bear 148 in Trouble Grizzly 148, the well-known daughter of Banff most famous bear, number 64, has once again run afoul of provincial conservation officers by leaving the protection of Banff National Park and hanging around Quarry Lake and the Peaks of Grassi neighbourhood in Canmore. Despite the fact that they are built on a primary wildlife corridor and that they are right on the route that any bear would need to take were it to connect with the (hopefully) soon to be established Three Sisters Corridor, it seems provincial conservation officers have little tolerance for 148. She has never made contact with people, but she does not do well with dogs. This past week, she bluff charged a man with a child in a stroller that also had two dogs on leash. Any time dogs are involved in bear encounters there is a chance that the encounter may escalate. In most situations, when bears encounter people, they are looking to see whether we pose a threat or not. Two barking, growling dogs can definitely be interpreted that way and so she escalated to a bluff charge just to let them know that she was in charge. Bluff charges are just that…a bluff. It's a way to let something know that she is ready for business if need be. Like most bears, she then left them alone. No injuries occurred, just some shaky nerves. She essentially just did what she was supposed to do. She warned them to stay away and then she moved on. She is collared and so officials should have known she was in the area. As a result of this encounter, officials live trapped her and moved her back to her main turf around the town of Banff. They did state though that if she comes back to Canmore and has another similar encounter that they will euthanize her. As Bill Hunt from Banff National Park stated in a recent story in the Rocky Mountain Outlook: "Female bears are the reproductive engines of the population and she's lived her entire life in Banff National Park and surrounding area without incident so far." There's also a very good chance that she has mated for the first time this spring. At 6-1/2 years old, she's right at the age when bears in the central Rockies tend to begin mating. As it is, we have one of the lowest productivity rates of any bear population and so the loss of even one breeding female can make a big impact on the population. Canmore is her territory, just as much as Banff. As a community we need to find ways to live with bears or we will see more and more of them shot simply for hanging out where people can harass them. Just after closing off the area where 148 had her incident, Conservation Officers charged two people with a dog for crawling under the closure tape and ignoring the closure. Unfortunately, all it takes is a few more morons like these two that will help ensure that bears are no longer welcome on the landscape. It makes no sense to fight for a corridor along the Three Sisters lands if bears are not allowed to move through the Canmore Nordic Centre, Power Line Trail, Quarry Lake and Peaks of Grassi in order to actually reach it. They are all connected. We already have the most developed landscape in the world where grizzlies still exist and unless we as a community vow to share the mountains with bears than the bears will simply be shot one after the other. Let's hope that 148 stays put in Banff, but the buffaloberry season is now upon us. I spotted my first ripe berries last week, right in the heart of Canmore. Even if 148 stays away, bears WILL be moving into the valley bottoms to feed on these berries. A bear like 148 can eat up to 200,000 buffaloberries every day. That's the equivalent of you eating 75 Big Macs, every day for the next 6 weeks. It's the one food that allows them to build their fat layers for winter. The safety concern is that the berries need sunlight to grow. That means they need an opening in the forest canopy…which is exactly what a trail or a road provides. This means that almost all low elevation trails in the area are lined with grizzly bear buffets. If there are buffaloberries, there will be bears nearby. If you learn to identify just one plant in the central Rockies, make it this one. This summer, instead of complaining about the closures that will be coming as bears gather to feed on berries, forget about the low elevation trails. This is a great time of year to do some of the higher ridgewalks like the Mount Allan Centennial Trail or Sunshine Meadows. You can avoid the bears simply by avoiding the berries. It doesn't mean you won't encounter a bear, but you can dramatically shift the odds in your favour by avoiding areas with large patches of buffaloberries. If you're a mountain biker, sloooooow down. The bears are so focused on feeding that if you scream down some of the nordic centre trails, you may find yourself with a very close encounter. Everyone needs to carry bear spray, even along local town trails. Make sure it is on your belt and not strapped to your pack or your bike. If you get separated from them, you will still have your spray only if it's on your person. Bears are an amazing part of the mountain landscape. They are one of the key reasons that visitors state for visiting this area. We all rely on tourism for the lifeblood of the valley and we need to do our part to make sure that the grandchildren of today's visitors will still be able to see grizzlies 50 years from now. I hope to be around to see bear 148s great grandchildren as well. New Method to Count Bears Biologists have developed a new method to estimate bear populations and densities in the mountains. By placing hundreds of remote wildlife cameras along trails throughout the mountains, and combining this with radio collar data, they can get a much more accurate estimate of grizzly populations. Historically, they would need to do extensive field work to collect dna from hair and scat samples. As biologists look at the cost of another dna study in Banff, the estimate runs at almost a half a million dollars and hundreds of man hours in the field. During the study, researchers Jesse Whittington and Mark Hebblewhite trapped and collared 22 grizzlies. This was followed up by placing 214 remote cameras they were able to track the collared grizzlies as well as unknown individuals as they were captured on the cameras. Without the help of cameras, they would have come to the conclusion that the population had dropped by as much as 51%. The use of cameras makes it much easier for researchers and land managers to estimate population densities for animals like grizzlies. Parks Canada cameras have captured more than 2,000 images of bears in just the past 3 years. They are also regularly capturing photographs of five females and their young. The important thing in this method is that the combination of collar data and cameras is what allows them to estimate density. In the central Rockies, they estimated around 13 bears per 1,000 km. These are fairly stable numbers and compare well to studies done 10 or more years ago. However, this stability relies on keeping breeding females like 148 on the landscape. If we start to lose the reproductive engines of the population, we could see a steep decline in numbers. Let's all do our part in not just staying away from bear prone areas during buffaloberry season but also reporting violations like off-leash dogs that could result in a very negative interaction with a grizzly. If a bear has to die because you thought it was your God given right to have your dog illegally off-leash, then you should not be living in a community that prides itself on being bear aware. And I would hope that everyone around you would report that violation to the appropriate authorities. Let's celebrate that our bears are doing well, but maintain our vigilance so that the trend continues. Next up…Where did Waterton get it's name. Story 1 - Bulletproof Elk A recent study published in the journal PLOS One has brought some amazing insights into the behaviour of female elk in the Rocky Mountains. The study took place in southwestern Alberta and southeastern British Columbia. It looked at the behaviour of female elk when confronted by hunters and how they are able to learn to effectively avoid the hunters completely over time…and when I say avoid…They become virtually bulletproof by the age of 9 or 10. In any animal population, there will be two sets of behavioural traits, those they are born with (such as personality and temperament), and those they learn over time. This study looks to see how female elk learn to effectively evade both bow and rifle hunters over time. They satellite collared female elk and then looked into whether behavioural differences based on age were due ONLY to pressure from hunters, meaning that more timid elk were naturally more likely to survive, or whether the elk could learn new behaviours over time to increase their odds of surviving into old age. In any predator-prey relationship, predators may seek certain behaviours in their prey, while the prey also adopt behaviours designed to make them less vulnerable, such as moving to less risky locations. Many of these responses seem to be based on experience dealing with either predators, or in the case of elk, hunters. This gives older female elk an advantage over younger, less experienced individuals. The higher the pressure, the stronger will be the elks reaction. This is especially evident during the hunting season where the elk will experience intense pressure from numerous hunters over a short period of time. The study found that animals react quite rapidly to changes in their home range. These include new predators arriving or even increased disturbances by people. The changes in behaviour show that the animals are learning to adapt to new conditions over time. In this study, hunters were the main predator putting pressure on the elk. New high powered rifles allow elk to be taken at distances of 300 m or more. The study focused on female elk, because the hunting pressure on them is lower than it is for bulls. They can also live as long as 20 years or more and are highly social, living together in groups through survive successive hunting seasons. As some females in the herd are shot, the remainder have an opportunity to alter their behaviour and to learn from the experience. The fact that the hunting season is limited to a short period allows the elk to take more extreme measures, such as moving to more inaccessible areas, in order to reduce their exposure to hunters. They may also move around less which also makes them more difficult for hunters to spot. As elk gain more experience, they seem to become more and more successful in evading hunters. By the age of 9 or 10, they are essentially bulletproof. The study also looked into whether personality types made a difference in survival. For instance, were bolder individuals killed more quickly, and thus making up less of the population in older elk. During the study, female elk were fitted with satellite collars that allows biologists to track their movements over time. From their locations, they could analyze how they used forest cover and rugged landscapes to escape hunters. As female elk aged, they moved less, making them less easily spotted by hunters. They also increased their use of more rugged landscapes more during bow hunting season than during rifle season. This may be due to the fact that bow hunters need a closer approach and rugged terrain will make that more difficult. It also increases the chances that the hunter will be discovered. Rifle hunters, however, can shoot long distances into rugged terrain as they may be more visible if they are on slopes as compared to flatter ground. While female elk normally reduce their use of forest cover with age, they will increase its use if they are near roads where hunters may be present. Their strategies change when they are in areas where the likelihood of being spotted is higher. The elk actually used different methods of evading hunters depending on the type of equipment the hunters used, such as bows vs rifles. Most of the bold elk are killed at a young age, so the population gets more timid with age. As the saying goes, there are no old-bold elk. But the elk that get old, can become bullet proof. Story 2 - Exploding Bear Spray Have you ever left your bear spray in your car? OK, be honest. You know you have. I would bet that most of us do this all the time. My guides pack has been living in my car through entire seasons with my trusty bear spray in its holster. Well that all changes right now! Last weekend, Lyndsay Kearns returned to her car after a long bike ride to discover that her canister of Saber Wild Max bear spray had exploded in her car. The hot sun, heated up her car to temperatures high above the recommended storage temperatures and after cooking for a few hours…kaboom. The canister was completely destroyed and her car was seriously damaged. Everything was saturated with bear spray. Before I had an opportunity to speak with Lyndsay, I took out a magnifying glass and read the tiny notices on the side of the canisters and came across this message: "When travelling, do not store in a passenger compartment. Container may explode if heated. Do not place in hot water or near radiators, stoves or other sources of heat. Do not leave in a hot vehicle. For safety and performance do not store above 50C or below 0C" Say what? I guess this makes sense, but I'd never really thought much about it. Well I will now. Yesterday Lyndsay was nice enough to let me interview her for the podcast. She's been in Canmore since 2009 and is an avid lover of the local mountain bike scene. If you want to listen to the interview, the link to listen to the episode is at the top of this post. The interview begins at the 7:50 mark. From her experience, it's critical that we don't store bear spray in our cars when we're not in them. The bear spray should also not be stored in the passenger compartment if possible. For those of you with sedans, keep it in the trunk, away from people. I'll also be ordering a Bear Spray Safety Container from Kodiak Wildlife Products. For $20, it offers a sealable storage container that protects the canisters against heat and accidental impact that could damage the canister and lead to accidental releases. You can order one of these canisters here: Bear Spray Safety Container And don't forget that canisters should not be stored in your car in the winter either. Although they SHOULD not freeze, I did come across one video that showed a car where the canister exploded when left overnight in cold temperatures. So my advice, store it in a safety container when travelling, and keep it indoors at night. Yikes…what a mess. Story 3 - Dr. Joe Shea Presentation Dr. Joseph Shea is a climatologist focusing on high elevation landscapes using unmanned aerial vehicles. On a daily basis, he runs the new cold water research lab in Canmore, Alberta and is recognized as one of the top snow and ice scientists in the world. His presentation looks into the use of drones in high elevation climate science. I hope you enjoy Dr. Shea's presentation. The new Cold Water Research Lab in Canmore is poised to do some amazing research and I look forward to sharing some of their discoveries in upcoming episodes.
