America just lost its last perfect credit rating, as Moody's downgraded the U.S. from AAA to Aa1 over concerns about rising debt and soaring interest costs. In this episode, we break down what credit ratings actually mean, why this downgrade matters, and how it could affect everything from government borrowing to mortgage rates. It's a fiscal wake-up call — and a critical moment to rethink America's economic playbook.

How much credit risk is in the market? Equities get the headlines but the world runs on credit. Jamie Dimon recently declared that credit was a “bad risk” on the heels of Moody’s downgrading the U.S. credit rating and a spike in the 10 Year Treasury yield. Suddenly, the boring old credit and bond markets are all the rage on the financial news channels, and it goes much deeper than treasuries. Today’s episode examines the scope of the global credit market and unpacks the difference between the systemic threat posed in the global financial crisis (GFC) and the looming credit crisis today. And, it shows how the big corporations prepared for the gathering storm by rewriting the rules of the game after the GFC. The big guys are fairly insulated from any sort of looming credit shock, but the rest of us are pretty much toast. Access the episode resources. Did you know that the median retail investor spends only six minutes researching a stock before buying it? Most of that time is spent staring at a price chart—often just the current day's movement. Nick compares the limited “research” many individual investors conduct to the extensive analysis performed by Henssler's research analysts.K.C. then takes a closer look at the “One Big Beautiful Bill” that passed the House of Representatives just hours before we recorded. We discuss the revised State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction cap, the increased Child Tax Credit, and the proposed tax break on tip income. While the bill's fate in the Senate remains uncertain, it appears that many of Trump's 2017 tax cuts may be extended.Last Friday, after the market closed, Moody's became the third major credit rating agency to downgrade the U.S. government's debt rating. The cut comes at a time when global confidence in U.S. debt is wavering, and Congress is debating a tax bill that could further increase the national debt. We examine what this downgrade means and whether it reflects actual investment risk. After the break, D.J. breaks down Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and explains why they're one of the most powerful tools for saving money—thanks to their unique triple tax benefit. While many people use HSAs to pay for health-care expenses as they arise, there are compelling advantages to covering those costs from other funds and allowing the HSA to accumulate, benefiting from tax-deferred growth over time.Join hosts Nick Antonucci, CVA, CEPA, Director of Research, and Managing Associates K.C. The U.S. just received a downgrade to its credit rating, should you worry? Last week, Moody's announced it downgraded the United States sovereign credit rating from AAA to Aa1. While a downgrade is important to understand and can have negative consequences for interest rates, this downgrade did not seem too problematic. I mainly say that because Moody's was the last major credit rating agency to have the U.S. at the highest possible rating. The first downgrade carried the most weight in my opinion as it had the highest shock value. Standard & Poor's was the first to move in August 2011 and the stock market fell 6.66% the session after the announcement. Fitch then lowered its rating on U.S. debt in August 2023 and the stock market lost 1.38%. After this Moody's downgrade the stock market seemed to have little reaction as it actually had a small increase following the news. While this downgrade may sound scary, I don't believe it will have long term consequences considering the fact that US debt is still viewed as a very safe asset. With that said, the US does need to address the growing deficit problem as further downgrades from these credit agencies could cause problems.   Demand for electric vehicles is falling dramatically Electric vehicle sales in the month of April declined 5% while the overall car market grew by 10%. This is only the third monthly decline in four years for electric vehicles. The reason for the decline is consumers are watching their spending more than they have in a while and many of the deals and promotions for electric vehicles have disappeared. It was not just Tesla who had difficulty because of Elon Musk's political association, but even Kia, Hyundai and Ford experienced drops. Rivian was hit hardest on their R1T pickup truck as it saw a 50% decline in sales for April. With some of the crazy electric vehicle lease deals gone, consumers are also asking the question about charging related concerns. There are some car buyers who were considering buying an electric vehicle but they said it's not worth the stress of charging your vehicle all the time. It's just much easier to pull into a gas station that is always easy to find. This is only one month of electric vehicle sales and not a trend that has been going on for a while, but with the increased production of oil from OPEC and a large potential supply of oil in the future, gas prices should decline which takes away the incentive of paying more for an electric vehicle.   High risk, private market investments are showing up in more 401(k) plans Another big 401K provider called Empower who oversees $1.8 trillion in 401(k) assets for about 19 million people has decided it will start allowing private credit, equity and real estate in some of the accounts they administer later this year. I think this is a terrible idea for investors. I have seen the back end of these private deals and many times investors have made no money from them and can only get out a little bit of their money at a time, while they are suffering from low returns and high fees. No surprise Wall Street loves these private market investments because of high fees, which range anywhere from 1% to 2% of the portfolio balance on an annual basis. One way they are trying to sneak in the private market funds is with a 10% allocation in the popular target date funds. This is pretty sneaky because you may be thinking you're getting a pretty conservative stock and bond fund that becomes more conservative as you get older, but with a 10% allocation in these private assets I believe it will increase the funds risk and lower the returns going forward. As always, the bankers on Wall Street only care about generating more fees, and don't care if investors lose money as long as they bring in their billions of dollars in profits. If you see these in your 401(k) options, cross them off the list and stick to the traditional long-term investments that have worked for so many years now.   Financial Planning: Who Benefits from the new SALT proposal? The current SALT deduction allows taxpayers who itemize to deduct up to $10,000 of certain state and local taxes, most importantly their state income taxes and property taxes, from their federal taxable income. The new proposal in the House bill would raise this cap to $40,000 for households earning under $500,000, with a phaseout that fully eliminates the expanded deduction at $600,000. Married and single tax filers alike with incomes over $600,000 would be subject to the $10,000 SALT limit. This change is intended to benefit middle- and upper-middle-income taxpayers in high-tax states, while limiting the benefit for higher earners. The proposal also includes annual 1% inflation adjustments beginning in 2026. If the bill is signed into law in its current form, the larger deduction would apply beginning in tax year 2025. If passed, tax payers who make less than $600k in high tax states who own a home with a mortgage will see the biggest tax benefit and they may want to adjust their tax withholdings or estimated tax payments to account for it. However, the bill has not passed the Senate, and the final terms are likely to change.   Companies Discussed: CAVA Group, Inc. (CAVA), First Solar, Inc. (FSLR), Levi Strauss & Co. (LEVI), & UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (UNH)

Romania turns left after election interference On Sunday, Romania has taken the centrist-left position with the election of a new president named Nicușor Dan. Dan is supportive of Romania's participation in the European Union, and has made moves to approve the homosexual/transgender movement in his country. The more conservative candidate, George-Nicolae Simion, lost the election in a vote of 54% to 46%. Romania is the second largest Eastern European country by population.  The mainstream media is interpreting this election as an international rejection of the Trump agenda.  The back story is that Călin Georgescu, the conservative in the first round of the Romanian presidential election last December, garnered the most votes among the six presidential candidates at that time. After his opponents claimed that Russia had influenced the election through TikTok accounts, Romanian government officials detained Georgescu, canceled that election, and re-set it for May 18th.  Tens of thousands of Romanians protested in the streets back in March. At the time, Elon Musk said, “They just arrested the person who won the most votes in the Romanian presidential election. This is messed up.” Most and least benevolent countries According to this year's Gallup World Happiness Report, the most benevolent countries in the world, judged by donations and volunteer hours, are Indonesia, the United States, Kenya, Gambia, United Arab Emirates, Ireland, Canada, and New Zealand. On Sunday, President Trump posted on social media that he and First Lady Melania Trump are "saddened to hear about Joe Biden's recent medical diagnosis." Appearing on MSNBC's “Morning Joe” on Monday, former Obama health advisor Dr. Zeke Emanuel said the cancer is so advanced, he has had it for many years. SCARBOROUGH: “Doesn't it take some time for prostate cancer to develop to a point where it would spread to the bones?” EMANUEL: “He's had this for many years, maybe even a decade, growing there and spreading.” Dr. Emanuel explained how serious Biden's prostate cancer truly is. Now, it's an Aa1. Moody's noted that the downgrade "reflects the increase over more than a decade in government debt and interest payment ratios to levels that are significantly higher than similarly rated sovereigns.” The rating organization added that: “Successive U.S. administrations and Congress have failed to agree on measures to reverse the trend of large annual fiscal deficits and growing interest costs.”   Another independent rating service, named Fitch, downgraded the United States in 2023.  Close And that's The Worldview on this Tuesday, May 20th, in the year of our Lord 2025. Subscribe for free by Spotify, Amazon Music or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. Trump's Spending Under Fire After U.S. Credit Downgrade

(AURN News) — President Donald Trump's fiscal policies are under renewed scrutiny after Moody's downgraded the U.S. credit rating from Aaa to Aa1, citing the nation's rising debt, widening deficits and mounting interest costs. While Moody's did not name Trump in its downgrade announcement, the agency pointed to long-term trends that have intensified under his administration. Federal spending has increased sharply, and Trump has called for extending the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act — moves that analysts say are worsening the country's fiscal outlook. “Over more than a decade, US federal debt has risen sharply due to continuous fiscal deficits. During that time, federal spending has increased while tax cuts have reduced government revenues,” Moody's said in a statement. The agency projected that without changes to taxation or spending, the government's budget flexibility will remain limited. It expects mandatory spending — including interest payments — to rise from 73% of total federal outlays in 2024 to 78% by 2035. Moody's also warned that extending the 2017 tax law would add about $4 trillion to the federal primary deficit over the next decade. Deficits are projected to reach nearly 9% of GDP by 2035 — up from 6.4% this year — with debt rising to 134% of GDP, up from 98% in 2024. According to CBS News, federal spending under Trump is now higher on a day-to-day basis than in nine of the past 10 years. In the first 100 days of his presidency, spending was $200 billion higher than during the same period the year before. The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a nonpartisan watchdog group, called the downgrade a warning sign that policymakers are heading in the wrong direction. “Can you hear that? It's the sound of not one, not two, but all three major credit rating agencies now saying the same thing: the US fiscal situation is unsustainable,” said Maya MacGuineas, the group's president. “At the very least, we should not be considering adding more than $3 trillion to the debt — or $5.2 trillion if temporary provisions are made permanent — after we were just told our credit worthiness is inferior to what it was,” she added.Trump has touted cost-cutting efforts through the Department of Government Efficiency, but so far, overall federal expenditures have continued to grow. May 19, 2025 | Season 7 | Episode 19Moody's downgrade of US Treasury debt from AAA to AA1 reverberated through markets, pushing bond yields higher and raising questions about America's fiscal trajectory. This watershed moment, following earlier downgrades by S&P (2011) and Fitch (2023), signals growing concern over the nation's $2 trillion annual deficit and proposed legislation that could add another $3.8 trillion through 2034.The financial impact is immediate but nuanced. As 10-year Treasury yields approach 4.7% – what analysts identify as the tipping point where "equity returns start to waver" – investors face crucial portfolio decisions. Treasury bonds now more effectively compete with stocks for investment dollars, while gold surges $60 to $3,250 on geopolitical concerns. This evolving landscape demands thoughtful consideration of asset allocation between US investments, international stocks, and fixed income.Looking deeper, today's immigration debates mirror historical patterns. The 1950s "Operation Wetback" deported approximately one million people during an economic downturn, highlighting how economic anxiety often drives immigration policy regardless of which party holds power. This historical perspective, championed by successful investors like Ray Dalio, helps contextualize current market conditions and policy decisions.Tech investments continue making headlines, with NVIDIA announcing compatibility tools for competitors' products while Adobe presents a potential value play after falling 10% this year. Trading below 20 times forward earnings (compared to historical 30-40x multiples) with 90% gross margins and insider buying, Adobe maintains advantages in commercial AI applications despite increasing competition. What does this mean for your portfolio? US equity markets advanced, reversing earlier losses as investors digested Moody Ratings' decision after the close of trading last Friday (16 May) to downgrade the U.S.'s credit rating to Aa1 from Aaa - Dow rose +137-points or +0.32%, recovering from an earlier decline of -317-points. UnitedHealth Group Inc (up +8.21%) was the leading Dow component for a second straight session, continuing to rebound from steep losses last week that saw the stock fall over >20% and hit 5-year low last Thursday (15 May). The insurer disclosed after Friday's (16 May) close that new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Stephen Hemsley spent US$25M to buy 86,700 shares, to bring his direct ownership to nearly 680K shares. And Chief Financial Officer (CFO) John Rex invested US$5M to buy 17,175 shares, to bring his direct ownership to a ~204K shares. JPMorgan Chase & Co (down -1.00%) after the investment bank hosted its annual investor day, reiterating its key financial guidance. JPMorgan maintained its forecast for full-year net interest income (NII) at ~US$94.5B, including US$90B excluding markets, and projected expenses to hold steady at ~US$95B. The bank also reaffirmed its 17% return on tangible common equity (ROTCE) target. Meanwhile, CEO chief Jamie Dimon warned against complacency in the face of a slew of risks, citing everything from inflation and credit spreads to geopolitics.

All foreign investors combined, from central banks to private investors, increased their holdings of Treasury securities by $233 billion in March from February, and by $942 billion over the past 12 months, to a record $9.05 trillion (red in the chart). The majority of what they bought were long-term Treasury securities, which increased by $133 billion to a record $7.63 trillion, according to data by the Treasury Department Friday afternoon (blue in the chart). The buying was across the major holders, except for China and Hong Kong combined, and for Ireland. Of particular note: Canada's holdings of Treasury securities spiked majestically in February and March, despite the tariffs and the ultra-sour mood in Canada about US-anything. Increases in March, and total Treasury holdings: United Kingdom: +$29 billion, to $779 billion Luxembourg: unchanged, at $412 billion Cayman Islands: +$37 billion to $455 billion Ireland: -10 billion to $329 billion Belgium: +$7 billion to $402 billion Switzerland: +$21 billion to $312 billion.   Source: wolfstreet.com https://twitter.com/KobeissiLetter/status/1923470842089902157 Moody's downgrade of US rating may not dent stock markets much: Analysts Global financial markets may not react much to Moody's Ratings downgrade of United States' rating from AAA to Aa1, believe analysts, except for a knee-jerk reaction, if any. At the domestic level, Indian stock markets would be focussed more developments such as progress of monsoon, corporate results and economic data. Talks on tariff-related issues with the US will also impact sentiment.   Moody's downgrade, they said, was more to get the rating in sync with Fitch and S&P, who have already downgraded US' ratings. While Fitch had downgraded the rating to AA+ from AAA in August 2023, S&P had lowered US' rating back in August 2011.  Source: business-standard.com https://twitter.com/KobeissiLetter/status/1923496054017708041   The ‘Big,

While this doesn't seem like much of an issue at face value, this is just the latest in a plethora of warnings that could snowball at any moment as the United States faces a massive unplayable debt, interest costs and a total shift into a new digital technocratic economy. Recently, Trump alongside several technocrats met with the leaders of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Syria to forge what he claimed were greater economic ties. The truth is, the system they shook hands on was revolving around a new AI governance model which of course directly ties to the global financial system. This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Tuesday, May 4. After a humid and rainy Monday, we are back to pleasant and cooler Tuesday.  According to the National Weather Service, it will be partly sunny Tuesday with a high near 61 degrees in the Cedar Rapids area. The wind will hover around 15 mph. Tuesday night it will be mostly clear, with a low of 41 degrees. Lawmakers and activists opposed to abortion rights said Monday they are on track to put what they call a “Protect Life Amendment” asking voters to declare the Iowa Constitution does not provide a right to abortion on the statewide ballot as early as 2024. Similar versions of the resolution have been advanced by Republicans in the Iowa Senate and Iowa House, and proponents say there is now agreement between the chambers on the wording of the proposal — which must be approved by two consecutive general assemblies before Iowa voters decide whether to amend the constitution. Republicans have taken this approach because multiple bills they passed in attempt to limit abortion in the state were defeated by legal challenges. Now they are pushing for language to amend the Iowa constitution to the effect that abortion, or funding to get one, should not be protected rights under state law. They then would be able to pass laws restricting abortion again, with a greater likelihood of it passing. This is especially pertinent if a change is made to precedent nationally, such as a ruling against Roe v. Wade. Because a body has never been found, the grave of James “Jim Bob” Booher remains empty. However, on Monday a federal jury decided they had seen enough evidence to give his family some measure of justice, finding Matthew Robbins guilty of the murder and a variety of federal firearm and robbery charges. Robbins, already serving time on a gun charge, now faces a mandatory of 10 years and possibly life in prison. https://www.thegazette.com/crime-courts/former-pro-boxer-says-he-knew-his-long-time-friend-killed-james-booher/ (According to testimony, more than one witness said Robbins fatally shot Booher, 51, )with a sawed-off shotgun on May 31, 2014, and burned his body at a pit at a farmhouse on Nederhiser Road near Ely that Robbins rented at the time. Witnesses testified Robbins killed Booher because he was angry that Booher repeatedly sold him meth mixed with bath salts, reducing its purity or potency. Moody's Investors Service has assigned Cedar Rapids the agency's second-highest bond rating because of the city's “healthy financial position,” with a large tax base and revenue-raising flexibility despite risks of the city-owned hotel and convention center and above-average leverage associated with debt and pension obligations. The Aa1 rating, the agency's second highest, indicates the bonds are deemed to be of high quality and are subject to low credit risk. In analyzing the city's financials, Moody's determined that the city has not been badly hurt by the pandemic, and predict a surplus by the end of the year.
