Residential Clean Energy Tax Credit: 25D This 30% credit applies to purchase and installation costs for: ·         Solar panels ·         Solar water heaters ·         Fuel cell property expenditures ·         Small wind turbines ·         Geothermal heat pumps ·         Battery storage systems The amount of the credit you can take is a percentage of the total improvement expenses in the year of installation with no annual maximum or lifetime limit: ·         30% for 2022 - 2032 ·         26% for 2033 ·         22% for 2034 Energy Efficient Home Improvement: 25C (Up to $3,200 Available Now) DESCRIPTIONThe Inflation Reduction Act significantly expands and extends the 25C tax credit, now known as the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit. Previously, this tax credit was limited to 10% of your project costs but is now increased to up to 30% and available on an annual basis. After January 1, 2023, qualified energy-efficient improvements to your home may qualify you for tax credits worth up to $3,200. ELIGIBILITYYou may claim the energy efficient home improvement credit for improvements to your main home. Your main home is generally where you live most of the time. You can't claim the credit if you're a landlord or other property owner who doesn't live in the home. For the energy efficiency home improvement credit, the home must be: ·         Located in the United States ·         An existing home that you improve or add onto, not a new home Homeowners can claim up to $2,000 for heat pumps, heat pump water heaters, or biomass stoves. Upgrade costs eligible for the credit can include equipment, installation, and labor costs. Homeowners can also claim up to $1,200 for other weatherization installs and energy-efficient improvements including up to: ·         $150 for a home energy audit ·         $250 for a new exterior door ($500 total for all exterior doors) ·         $600 for new exterior windows and skylights ·         $1,200 for insulation ·         $600 for an upgraded electrical panel. High-Efficiency Electric Home Rebate HEEHRA The Inflation Reduction Act includes $8.8 billion in rebates for home energy efficiency and electrification projects, which is expected to save American households up to $1 billion annually. This legislation provides point-of-sale discounts to low- and moderate-income households across America to electrify their homes. When households make qualifying electrification purchases, they will receive these rebates as immediate, off-the-top discounts. Your State will administer the program, which provides rebates on ENERGY STAR-certified appliances and other home electrification projects. It may take 1-2 years to get the program up and running in your state. Please note that homeowners can only receive a rebate from either the HEEHRA or the HOMES program (additional information below)—not both. However, it is expected that homeowners will be eligible, pending DOE guidance, to combine both a rebate from either of these two rebate programs with an energy efficiency tax credit at the same time.

Winter in the UK is either mild and damp, or cold and windy - and who would want to be outside as a gardener at this time of year - well Saul and Lucy for one, as this time of year is some of the busiest in all the 12 months. While the garden may be slumbering, Head Gardeners and their teams are beavering away on major jobs, garden renovations, cleaning and tidying the years clutter and making plans for 2024. So join us every week to see what we're up to in the cold months in our work and home gardens. If there was any sign that Lucy was at the opposite ends of the earth then the weather (in true Talking Heads style) would be it. While Saul has put on the extra layers and woolly hat due to winter finally catching up with the UK, Lucy is sunbathing in +25C heat in the Australian summer.

Locked 3-apiece, Team New Zealand and Luna Rossa will be looking to the weather gods - and the possibility of strengthening winds - as a key factor in the coming days. The America's Cup rivals return to the Hauraki Gulf today for two more races and what could be a decisive day of foiling - they each need to win four more races in the best-of-13 series to lift the Auld Mug.The first six races have been in lighter airs - with the leading boat at the start gaining a massive advantage - and those breezes are set to continue today and tomorrow. But the regatta deadlock might be broken if a low-pressure system moves in this week.Today's weather may not be as superb as yesterday, but it's again expected to smile on America's Cup sailors and spectators. The on-water spectacle took place under bluebird skies in Auckland yesterday, but a weak, warm front may bring a few showers to eastern parts of the city late this afternoon, MetService meteorologist Andy Best said."It's not a major, but it does mean we'll see a few showers developing."Wind won't be an issue – a 10 knot sou-easter is expected to rise to 15 knots by the time Team New Zealand and Luna Rossa are on the water for the 4.12pm and 5.12pm races.Swells would be around half a metre and a high of 25C is forecast, Best said.Winds will be lighter for the next day of racing on Monday, with a nor-easter reaching only 10 knots by race time, again 4.12pm and 5.12pm.The minimum wind speed for racing the foiling monohulls used in this America's Cup is 6.5 knots. The sea swell is expected to be half a metre.Again, cloudy periods may be punctuated by the odd shower and, again, it'll be warm - a high of 25C is forecast, Best said.Beyond tomorrow, though, we could see some strengthening winds. Both Team New Zealand's Peter Burling and Luna Rossa's Jimmy Spithill have acknowledged a low sitting off the east coast of New Zealand. That could push the current high away, and with it bring some stronger breezes.Higher winds are likelier to allow a trailing boat more opportunity to push past the other. Right now, the leading boat, in lighter airs, has a massive advantage, casting a hugely disruptive wind shadow in the lighter airs.Tens of thousands of yachting fans soaked up the high-pressure stakes of day three of racing for the America's Cup yesterday – watching on as some "Italian Magic" initially unfolded on the Hauraki Gulf, before the holders hit back. The army of supporters soaked up vantage points both on the water alongside the race course, as well as packing out the official America's Cup Village at the Viaduct, and nearby hospitality businesses, as Team New Zealand and Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli continued their battle for yachting's prized trophy. The scoreline in the best of 13 series was locked 2-all after Friday's at-times very tense racing. And by the end of yesterday's duo of races, the score remained locked at 3-3.The Italians initially won the opening race after taking advantage of a calamitous Team New Zealand showing in the pre-start jousting. But Team New Zealand hit back in stunning style in the second race of the day, this time making the most of Luna Rossa's own pre-start woes to power away.Yesterday, the excitement was in the air from mid-morning as fans flocked to the official Village.Out on the water, an estimated 3000 boats headed out to seek good vantage points. At the Village, many fans were decked out in black clothing and face paint to support Team New Zealand. And as through the earlier Prada Cup series, and first two race days of the America's Cup, a hearty contingent of Luna Rossa fans also decked themselves out in Italian colours and team gear of the challengers. The influx of fans was good news for hospitality operators at the Viaduct, with the return to level 1 meaning earlier crowd size restrictions were lifted. Those on the water on race days were warned to stick to the rules after a race start on Friday was abruptly halted due to a specta...

There’s so much to talk about with this week’s guest, Ninorah Fernandes-Brookshire and I’m delighted to have her on the show. Nino is the co-founder of NRI Women, a platform supporting non-resident Indian women across the world. It has now grown to be a community of over 3,000 women living in a multitude of countries. You’ll hear Nino talking in this episode about how Indians traditionally "do not like to air their dirty laundry in public" as she puts it, but moving internationally away from strong family and community connections is HARD, and the organisation aims to support and nurture women through the transition and challenges they may face. Earlier this year Nino and her co-founder and friend Bettina started the NRI Woman podcast, showcasing the stories of Indian women abroad and telling their stories to a wider audience.  Nino also co-founded the Naya Jeevan foundation with her husband Edward, an NGO that partners and supports the work of the Rescue Foundation, a multi-award winning charity based in Mumbai that fights human trafficking of girls into prostitution. The Rescue Foundation, led by an engaging and determined woman named Mrs. Triveni, a former investigative journalist, has so far rescued over 5,000 girls from prostitution all over India, pursuing prosecution for their pimps and captors, and rehabilitating these girls through education, healthcare and counselling. Numbers are hard to gather accurately but NGOs estimate that somewhere between 20 and 65 million Indians are trafficked year. Men, women and children are trafficked for diverse reasons but the abduction of girls and their brutal forcing into prostitution is a major problem.  NinO has lived around the world and has a wealth of stories about her fundraising by walking a frozen river in -25C conditions, running a marathon in someone else's shoes (literally), her business, Nindi Bindis and her passion for tribal belly dancing. Our Country Cottage a Narrative
Episode #25 Summer is Back & ITB Month 26

Our Country Cottage a Narrative

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 30, 2018 18:06

In this episode Our Country Cottage finally breaks free of winters grip, entering the summer months while In The Beginning, ITB, reveals some progress. ***In The Beginning, Month 26, September.*** ITB is the section of the podcast where I do my best to remember, through pictures, my log book, texts and invoices, well basically anything I can get my hands on.During this period of little getting done, it seems I also did little with my log book. That is to say sketchy notes. The second month of year three of the creation of Our Country Cottage started with our contractor calling to say he won’t be back for another two weeks. If you remember, the previous month we didn’t see him at all. So you could say, things are looking up. It appears that the month was broken into three, and a bit, trips. The first trip was generally rainy and cold. I tried out the in floor heating for the first time but didn’t keep it on for long as there was hardly any sun. A fire was built to take the edge off. There was a trip to a nearby town to check on cell phone boosters. My partner came up for a day and we went to visit friends in the area. The next trip up wasn’t until the middle of the month. We were definitely at the peak of fly season when I arrived, running the fly buster 2000 down a couple of times trying to clean up. The “spray and go away” tactic was then employed. Put out a good fog of anti fly stuff and go to town for supper. The shop vac was used to collect the, um, remains upon return. My log book indicates that, between visits, there were warnings and errors along with low levels and generator start faults reported by the solar control unit, but all appeared normal. Hmmmm. The next day Our Country Cottage had its first official guests for lunch. A good time was had by all even with the flies peaking in number in the afternoon. Ahhh country living. The dishwasher was run with a full load for the first time. I recorded the time and power used for each cycle it went through. Bottom line the batteries were at 99% at start and at 98% upon completion. And this was after sunset! Finally, the following day saw some Cottage items taken off of the to do list. The electricians showed up early and went to work. Among a long list of things done was, a wall switch in the mudroom to turn the well pump on and off. This was really handy as up to that point I had to flick a breaker in the utility room. I never leave OCC for any length of time without turning the well pump off. My reasoning is that if anything fails, only the water already in the tanks would escape. They ran an Ethernet cable from the generator to the utility room so I could get data inside OCC. Network cables were run from the utility room to the loft, over the garage, and to the kitchen. They fixed the ac plugs in the master bedroom that were not working. They installed heat tape in the drain in front of the garage. They installed all cover plates missing and installed the tracks for track lighting in the loft. By the time the electricians were done, most if not all of the electrical deficiencies were taken care off. Best day in months. Five days pass and we are back at OCC again, this time to receive the new furniture that we had been shopping for in the city over the past little while. Here is a bit of a cautionary tale. When the truck showed up the head dude proclaimed that they didn’t realize how far they had to come yahda yahda yahda. They wanted more money than the original estimate, of course. Always get a firm cost in writing for these sort of things and be very clear what is expected etc. etc… In our case we thought that we were covered but the trucking company was hired by the furniture company was an independent and a few loose ends crept in. Not being totally heartless and seeing that they put the furniture in OCC where we wanted it, including a very heavy piece in our upstairs bedroom (they worked hard) we settled on a price. It seems there is always something with moving or delivery costs. When I had the new cover for our Quonset delivered to our city house, the driver wanted to just push it off the back of his truck. When I insisted he use the power tailgate he told me it would cost more, well at least he did up to the point I produced the invoice clearly stating the use of his power tailgate was included. OCC was coming together. My partner and I spent the next little while tidying up and putting things where they belong. Like the futon, that was being used as a couch in the living room, could now be shifted to the back bedrooms as intended. Our contractor showed up, briefly, to drop off his work trailer. Great stuff, I thought, we are definitely getting some momentum going here. Well not so fast. Early the very next morning he was back to get his trailer as a problem had cropped up over night on another site. But we still have our furniture! Another five days fly by until OCC sees us again on the last day of the month. Our contractor and his trailer are back. There is also a large boom loader and a skid steer on site. There is still leftover construction material and garbage all over the site, but with prospects of things getting cleaned up, dare I say soon…. So with positive thoughts in mind, that evening, I sat on our new couch with a fire on one side and four or five deer grazing on the other. Scotch, anyone?   ***Now on with the OCC update*** When last we spoke I was having difficulty just getting down the drive, in fact, the last reported visit had me snow shoeing in. See Episode #24, the details are too painful to go into again. It was actually so painful that it took me almost a full month before I could convince myself to go back to Our Country Cottage. 28 days pass and my partner and I return to OCC. There are bare spots on the driveway. Gravel showing through, a very welcome sight. There was still plenty of snow in the woods but the drive was drivable. When we got to the cottage I turned on the heat trace that was in the drain in front of the garage. This would start the thawing process going so that water from the melt would go into the drainage system. I ran the well pump to clear any sediment build up. Remember I had turned the water off to the cottage and put RV antifreeze in the toilets and traps. When I ran the pump I hooked up a hose to the bottom of the pressure tank and drained it directly into the sump. The house was still turned off and the hose connect point was before the sediment filter, so it wasn’t clogging up the filter for no reason. While this was going on my partner was vaccing up the flies, etc. The batteries were topped up with distilled water. Make a note, need more distilled water. The generator had run less than an hour in the past 2 months. A quick check on the progress of the heat trace in front of the garage showed the ice had thawed around the trace and water was flowing. Once you get it started it will improve by itself so I turned it off and we left. Two weeks pass and I go back to OCC for a one day visit with the main intent of turning the water to the cottage back on. It had been a while since the temperature had dropped to freezing for any duration so I felt safe. When I got there the batteries were fully charged and it was 21C in the living room. I changed the water filter and turned on the water. This I did with all the taps open. I then went to each tap, starting from the lowest (outside hose tap), turning them off as water started to flow, to the top bathroom taps. I reasoned this would be the best way to get the air out of the system. There were no apparent leaks, verified by running to all the places leaks might happen to check and the pressure seemed to hold, once all the taps were closed and the toilets filled. The true test would be to see if the pressure would hold over time. At the base of the pressure tank there is a pressure gauge that shows the pressure in the tank and, with the valves open, the cottage water system. I took a note of the reading, wrote it on a piece of masking tape and stuck it to the well pump switch to check next visit. I turned the pump off and left. The next visit to OCC was about ten days later, but for the first time, it wasn’t me. One of my adult kids with a friend was going to camp on the property but ended up inside OCC instead. Detailed instructions on various aspects of OCC were passed on, along with, what was for me, the most important. Check the water pressure before doing anything. This was done and the pressure hadn’t dropped at all. The cottage water system held, as in, not leaking. OCC could hold its own water. Ok OK…. The only thing was that the domestic hot water was not turned on. So heating water on the cook top was the way to go. Their visit went without incident and the place was left in great shape, as I found out when I went for my next visit only a couple of days later. This trip was to be a full week long and had been planned for a while with the purchase of a new BBQ to replace the one up there that was on its last legs. Best recollection was that it was over 20 years old, and not easy years. Dragged across gravel pads, knocked over by marauding cattle (OK I think it got bumped off of the deck by a cow, once). Basically, an inexpensive BBQ treated with little respect. It was time. The new BBQ came unassembled in a box that just fit in the back of my vehicle. When I arrived I found the batteries fully charged, 25C in the living room and thanks to the previous visitors, no flies to vac. Happy, happy. I backed my vehicle up to the deck on the south side of OCC with the tailgate down, which lined up perfectly. After pumping up the tires on the hand truck I slide the BBQ over the tailgate straight onto the hand truck. With the aid of some improvised ramps I rolled it into the sunroom ready for assembly. That night I went to the nearby town for supper and supplies. The next day I started the BBQ assembly. It didn’t go well. I could blame the instructions but I seemed to be doing everything twice, once the way I though the instruction said, then once the correct way. I gave up about half way through. I decided that I would change the tractor from winter, snow thrower, rear blade mode to summer, mower deck mode. This was one of the harder conversions I remember doing. Things weren’t lining up. Clips and pins were hard to get out and in. Hmmm, first the BBQ now the tractor, maybe it was me. Well I got it done and tested. A little late in the day to start mowing so time for a nice hot shower. I had turned on the domestic hot water when I arrived the day before so should be good to go. Firstly it wasn’t very hot, in fact barely warm and low pressure to boot. Hmmm I turned the temp up on the hot water tank. That night, sitting on the couch I saw one maybe two red foxes go down the toboggan run. The next day started with great expectations of a BBQ supper on the new BBQ. Meat was taken from the freezer to thaw. I had some maintenance to do on the tractor and mower deck, grease etc. Then on to the first mow of the season. Three hours later I was ready for another shower. It was a bit better but still not great. It was now time to finish off the BBQ assembly. It went a bit better than the day before but took much longer than expected. In fact by the time it was complete and I heated it to 600 degrees for 20 mins to burn off the manufacturing coating, let it cool and season the grills, I was done and the meat went back in the fridge. Not happy. But the evening red fox did cruise by, allowing for some quick pix from the couch. The next morning the batteries were solar charging at 6 AM. I love this time of year. I got my camera ready for the, now deemed, six o’clock fox. While the red fox was a regular show in the evening it was also a regular show in the morning, too. He or she did not disappoint, and I got some good pics given he or she was only in view for less than a minute. The domestic hot water was becoming an issue and I started doing system flushes while observing pressure irregularities. I noticed that while draining hot water from the hot water pre-heater it would start off great then the pressure would drop substantially. I called my plumber and he suggested a blockage might have formed, but I couldn’t figure out where. I came to the conclusion that the pre-heater might be giving me grief and made a note to call the supplier from the city when I got back. I spent the rest of the day picking up bits and pieces in a larger nearby town. The following day I finished off the Quonset cover. If you remember, last year we changed the cover on the Quonset. The Quonset is a metal frame structure covered with a heavy duty fabric of some kind. Where the fabric meets the ground there is about 2 feet of material that rests on the ground that you can put dirt and or gravel on to seal the bottom of the walls. I hadn’t put the dirt and gravel back on the skirt as it was late in the season and I figured the snow would hold it in place till I was ready, and it did. Some of the work I could do with the skid steer and some I had to do by hand with a shovel and rake. I finished off by smoothing out the ground with the skid steer and I and the Quonset were done. After moving one of those metal fire pits from the Quonset to the cottage with the skid steer I had one of the better showers of my visit. Long and hotter. Maybe the hot water just needed using more. For some reason I couldn’t bring myself to used the BBQ that evening. I did manage to get some more fox pics later on though. The next morning I decided to treat myself to breakfast in town. When I opened the garage door the box that the BBQ came in, the large heavy box that I had carefully placed on the woodpile, was on its side on the floor. I then began to notice other items that had moved. A tire had rolled out from its resting place to the tractor, another box on its side. Then I saw him. A black furry being with a pointy nose about the size of a small house cat. It wasn’t a house cat. More like a wood chucky kind-o-thang. I approached with caution only to have him run under the stack of firewood. I tried to flush him or her out by making noise but nothing so I headed off to my breakfast while leaving the garage door open. When I got to our gate I realized I had forgotten the empty diesel containers I was going to take with me to get filled. So back I went. A close inspection under the log pile and with a look around a bit it became clear that he or she had taken the opportunity to escape. Fare enough. This time I’ll close the door. Well I would, if I could. For some reason these critters love to chew on wires and the wires that connect the safety beam at the bottom of the door had been broken. Five to ten minutes later, with the wires twisted together I was able to close the door and go to breakfast. The remainder of the day was spent getting the old BBQ ready for its final road trip, back to the city and back to where I had bought the new one from, with a promise that they would recycle it for me. I mistakenly started the process in the sun room, soon realizing that it was a dirty nasty job, with spiders, that would be best done in the garage. As I was dragging it down our gravel drive to the garage, a wheel came off and the BBQ took a header, spilling its lava rocks, grills and racks as a last comment to its last moments. Lovely. That evening I had my first supper cooked on the new BBQ. I think I might have had a few adult beverages to take the edge off, too. The last day of the visit was overcast and rainy. The box, that the new BBQ came in, was ideal for transporting the old one back to the city. A few cuts here and there and it slipped into the back of my vehicle perfectly. Batteries were topped up, a trail cam SD card was swapped, logs were taken and the solar control info was collected. I headed back to the city. Before going home, the old BBQ was dropped off at the BBQ place for recycling. They also took the modified box. Good stuff. Still have a few more visits in the old log book to tell you about, but am going to save them till next time. So tune in for Episode #26. Will I get the domestic hot water figured out, will there be anymore furry overnight guests in the garage and will my relationship with the new BBQ continue to improve, adult beverages aside? Also, ITB month 27, will my proclaimed optimism be rewarded or kicked to the curb like so many times before. At this time any promises of new pictures on the web site seem unfounded. Apparently I lie. Maggie MacDonnell is the winner of the Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize 2017. She won from a field of over 20,000 applications from teachers in almost every country in the world. In this lecture she reflects on the challenges, opportunities and experiences of teaching in the Canadian Arctic. For the last six years Maggie has been a teacher in a fly-in Inuit village called Salluit, home to the second northernmost Inuit community in Quebec, with a population of just over 1,300. It cannot be reached by road, only by air. In winter temperatures are minus 25C. Due to the harsh conditions, there are very high rates of teacher turnover which is a significant barrier to education in the Arctic. In areas of high deprivation, isolation and limited resources, teenagers often turn to drinking and smoking, even drugs and self-harm, as forms of escape and release. Maggie's whole approach has been about turning students from “problems” to “solutions”.

Story 1 - What will 2050 be like in western Canada Recently the CBC website posted an article by Tara Carman about the potential changes that will take place in British Columbia in the next 30 years with just a 2.5C increase in temperature. The story paints a troubling picture for Canada's westernmost province. It's no secret that our weather has been changing. Here in the Rockies, we are getting more overall moisture during the summer months, but it is coming in fewer, more extreme weather events. Many of these events are separated by droughts that set the scene for huge fires. The 2016 fire, known as the 'Beast' which devastated Fort McMurray, Alberta is a classic example. Even in British Columbia's rainforests, there have been significant fires over the past few years. If Canada were to halve our greenhouse emissions by 2050, that would still result in a 2.5C increase in the annual average temperature for British Columbia. Most scientists agree that an increase of just 2C over pre-industrial levels is the point at which the impacts of climate change become far more difficult for humans to deal with. Globally, it will cause longer droughts, intense heatwaves and disruptions to global food supplies. It will also result in sea level increases of more than half a metre resulting in the flooding of many coastal communities like Vancouver and Victoria. Currently, we're already half way to this 2C threshold. We're already experiencing a warmer planet than we have experienced in the past 10,000 years. Despite this, British Columbia could easily exceed that 2C point and experience 2.5C. So, what might this mean for the province? Here are a few bullet points: • Sea level could rise by 30 cm • 25% of the provinces glaciers will have disappeared completely • Flooding in the lower mainland can exceed $32.7 billion • The wettest day of the year will be 10% wetter than it is today • Days above 25C will increase from the current 18/year to a whopping 30 If you like sandy beaches, like Jericho Beach, higher sea levels could erode away the sand during storms. The seawall in Stanley Park will take a pummeling. You can also forget flying into Vancouver during severe storms as the airport, along with other low lying areas like the ferry terminal at Tsawwassen may be under water. The world class salmon runs on the west coast are dependent upon cold water runoff from the mountains. The ideal temperature range for trout and salmon is between 13 and 18C. As ocean temperatures rise with the reduction in cold water melt due to glacier loss, the temperatures can quickly exceed 20C. The Fraser River is Canada's most productive salmon river, but according to Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the average summer temperature rose by 1.1C between 1953 and 1998. As winters become milder, smaller snowpacks also melt quicker - and may disappear long before the summer salmon runs begin. If the cold meltwater is finished before the run, than the water temperature has more opportunity to increase to the point of being harmful to salmon runs. Now while increases in growing seasons may seem super cool, we forget that there are certain advantages to being a cold climate. Cold temperatures are very efficient at keeping many problematic insect pests and diseases at bay. While many people accuse the mountain pine beetle of being an invasive threat, it is a naturally occurring insect of the western mountains. At its peak, it resulted in a loss of over half of British Columbians pine by 2012, and likely 58% by the end of this year. Historically, it was climate that kept it under control. All we needed to keep it at bay was proper winters. A few weeks of -40C was very handy but since we're not getting that any more, the beetles have been able to spread much further north than ever before. In several cases in the 2000s, beetles that were part of huge epidemics were able to hitch a ride on atmospheric winds and Dorothy their way to a new and wondrous land…no, not Oz, but worse…far into northeastern British Columbia and northwestern Alberta. The significance of this long-distance transport means that they have now migrated far enough north to make their way into the Canadian Shield. They've also made the jump from lodgepole pine to jack pine meaning they now have a straight run across northern Canada, all the way to the eastern pine forests of Ontario and south all the way to Texas and Florida Other pests moving north into the mountain west include the spotted-wing drosophila which attacks cherries before they have a chance to ripen. The females lay their eggs in the unripe fruit which allows them to destroy the fruit before harvest. Little Cherry Disease is another challenge that is hitting British Columbia orchards. It causes cherries to be smaller and more bitter and, as a result, unsalable. Globally, insect pests are moving north at a rate of almost 3km/year, increasing the already high rate of global crop loss of 10-16% annually. Some fungi, are moving north at a rate in excess of 10km/year (https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/crop-pests-on-the-move-due-to-climate-change/). Around the world, there is no crop more important than wheat, and Canada produces almost 30 million tonnes of wheat every year. We are the worlds 6th largest exporter and climate change could challenge that supremacy. Recent studies show that an global increase in temperature of just 1 degree Celsius could reduce wheat production by between 4.1 and 6.4 percent. Globally, that would be a loss in excess of Canada's entire annual production and reach as high as 32 million tonnes. British Columbia's inland rain forest is also under threat of increased wildfires. While it's difficult to think of rain forests burning, we need to remember one important fact about the interior rain forest - it doesn't get enough rain to really be considered a rain forest. What it does get is some 10 metres of winter snowfall, at least it does today. While this doesn't make it truly qualify as a rain forest, it does release vast amounts of moisture through snow melt during the summer, and this helps keep the soils saturated. In essence, it simulates a rain forest. Should the summer rains, and winter snows diminish, these ancient forests could find themselves susceptible to increased fire hazard. Changing climates are changing the rules. Everything we grew up considering normal is now up for renegotiation. Climate is changing. Water regimens are shifting. While we may see more warm weather, the weather brings with it a constantly shifting collection of complications and implications. One thing that is critical in these changing times, is that we can trust the science that our economies are built upon. Everything we know about climate change is the result of climate models that help us to anticipate how we may be effected as the various elements of change are established. Next up…Climate in the age of Trump Story 2 - Climate Science in the Trumpocene Last week, I was lucky to be able to record a presentation by three of Canada's top experts on water and climate change, Bob Sandford, Dr. John Pomeroy and Dr. Joe Shea. Bob is the EPCOR Chair for Water and Climate Security and the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment, and Health. He is the author of dozens of books including the United Nation's Water in the World We Want as well as Cold Matters: The State and Fate of Canada’s Snow and Ice. He has long been a friend and mentor. His message on the challenges facing climate scientists today is important for anyone who believes in the scientific process and the role of peer reviewed science. I hope you enjoy his presentation entitled: The Hard work of Hope. Scientific Fact vs Politicized Fantasy in the Post-Truth Trumpocene.
