Are oxalates actually harming your health, or is this another nutrition myth? In this episode of Super Life, Darin Olien breaks down the real science behind oxalates, their connection to kidney stones, mineral absorption, and gut health, and whether you really need to avoid high-oxalate foods. There's a lot of fear-mongering around oxalates, but what does the latest research say? Should you stop eating spinach, beets, or almonds? What about meat's impact on kidney function? Darin pulls from peer-reviewed studies to cut through the noise and give you the facts so you can make the best choices for your health. If you've ever wondered whether oxalates are a real concern or just clickbait, this episode is a must-listen. Segment 1: What Are Oxalates? Friend or Foe? Oxalates, or oxalic acid, are naturally occurring compounds found in many plant-based foods. They serve as a defense mechanism for plants but can sometimes bind with minerals like calcium and iron in the body, potentially forming kidney stones or reducing nutrient absorption. Here's the key question: Are oxalates dangerous, or is this another health myth blown out of proportion? Here's what the research says: For most people, oxalates are NOT a problem. Your body naturally processes and eliminates excess oxalates through urine. For those prone to kidney stones, particularly calcium oxalate stones (which make up about 80% of all kidney stones), consuming too many high-oxalate foods can increase the risk. Oxalates can interfere with calcium and iron absorption, but this is only a concern for people with nutrient deficiencies. Key takeaway: If your kidneys are healthy, your body handles oxalates just fine. But if you've had kidney stones before, you might want to pay closer attention to your oxalate intake. Segment 2: What Does the Science Say About Oxalates? To cut through the noise, I pulled up the latest research from 2024 and 2025. Here's what's new: 1. Gut Microbiota Can Help Protect Against Oxalates A 2025 study in Frontiers in Nutrition found that certain gut bacteria (like Oxalobacter formigenes) actually digest oxalates, helping prevent kidney stones. Takeaway: If you're worried about oxalates, supporting your gut microbiome with probiotics might be a natural way to reduce their impact. Link: Read Study Here "The presence of oxalate-degrading bacteria in the gut can significantly lower oxalate absorption and reduce kidney stone risk." – Dr. L. Wang, NHANES Study 2. Vitamin C Supplements & Oxalate Formation Some people worry that high-dose vitamin C supplements convert into oxalates, increasing kidney stone risk. A 2025 study in Nutrients found no significant increase in urinary oxalates from vitamin C intake. Takeaway: If you take vitamin C in moderation, you don't have to worry about it increasing oxalates. Link: Read Study Here "Contrary to popular belief, moderate vitamin C supplementation does not significantly raise oxalate levels in urine." – Dr. P.C. Calder, Nutrients Journal 3. Cooking & Fermentation Can Reduce Oxalates A 2024 study on fermentation & nutrient bioavailability found that cooking reduces oxalate levels by up to 60%. Best methods? Boiling, steaming, and fermentation lower oxalates significantly. Takeaway: If you love spinach but worry about oxalates, just boil it first! Link: Read Study Here Segment 3: What About Meat? Does It Increase Kidney Stone Risk? Now, here's something you might not expect. We talk a lot about oxalates and plant-based foods, but what about meat? Could eating too much meat actually contribute to kidney stones? The research says YES—but not because of oxalates. Instead, the mechanism is uric acid and metabolic acidity. Let's break it down. 1. Red Meat & Uric Acid Stones A 2024 study in Nature Reviews Urology found that high animal protein intake increases uric acid, which contributes to kidney stones. Excess meat consumption makes urine more acidic, making it easier for stones to form. Link: Read Study Here "High animal protein intake, while providing essential amino acids, also contributes to increased acid load and uric acid production, both of which are risk factors for kidney stone development." – Dr. S. Loeb, Nature Reviews Urology 2. Meat Increases Metabolic Acidity A 2025 study from Frontiers in Endocrinology found that excessive meat consumption leads to increased acid load, calcium loss, and kidney dysfunction. This makes it harder for the kidneys to filter out waste properly. Link: Read Study Here "While meat consumption is essential for many, excessive intake can disrupt mineral ion homeostasis, increasing the risk of kidney stone disease." – Dr. R. Ahmad, Frontiers in Endocrinology Segment 4: Foods High & Low in Oxalates Knowing which foods to eat or limit is key. High-Oxalate Foods (If You're at Risk) Spinach, Swiss chard, beet greens Beets, rhubarb, sweet potatoes Almonds, peanuts, cashews Blackberries, kiwi, figs Black tea, cocoa, coffee Low-Oxalate Foods (Safer Choices) Kale, mustard greens, cabbage Cauliflower, cucumbers, zucchini Apples, bananas, melons, grapes Milk, yogurt (binds with oxalates) Eggs, fish, chicken, beef (in moderation) Segment 5: Actionable Steps to Manage Oxalate & Meat Intake If you're concerned about oxalates or meat-related kidney stones, here's what to do: Balance Oxalates with Calcium Eat calcium-rich foods with oxalates to prevent them from forming stones. Cook Your Vegetables Boiling, steaming, and fermenting reduce oxalates by up to 60%! Drink Plenty of Water Staying hydrated flushes out excess oxalates & uric acid. Don't Overdo Meat Consumption Limit red meat intake and balance with alkaline foods like vegetables & fruit. Probiotics for Gut Health Consider probiotic-rich foods like yogurt and kimchi to help break down oxalates. Final Thoughts So, should you avoid oxalates? Should you stop eating meat? Not necessarily. The real key is BALANCE. Most people don't need to avoid oxalates entirely, and meat is fine in moderation—as long as you balance it with hydration, alkaline foods, and a gut-friendly diet. In this conversation, Dr. Doug Lucas discusses the differences between plant-based and animal-based proteins, emphasizing the superiority of animal proteins in terms of bioavailability and digestibility. He introduces the concept of antinutrients found in plant proteins, such as trypsin inhibitors, tannins, and phytates, which hinder protein absorption. Lucas also compares the protein quality of plant and animal sources using PDCAAS and DIAAS metrics, concluding that while plant proteins can be consumed, they require careful consideration and preparation to maximize their benefits.

With the rise of Avian flu, should consumers take caution when buying eggs? What do dietitians need to know about the safety of animal proteins? And why are egg prices so high? Andy Bishop, Kentucky farmer and ag lender, confirms that Avian flu is not transmitted via eggs, but that the spread of the virus has presented farmers with a variety of challenges. From depopulation to misinformation, Avian flu hurts farmers' bottom line and impacts mental health. Also serving as the chair of the Cattleman's Beef Board in Kentucky, Bishop has plenty to say about the food landscape and how the term “plant-based” impacts consumer decisions. “Consumers are inundated with messaging based on social media algorithms that often spread false information. With the changes in the way we receive information, it is often difficult to discern what is true and what is not,” says Bishop. “The whole plant-based narrative amplifies the negative messaging surrounding true protein ‘Animal Protein'." Bishop also touches on his passion for agvocacy, how farming has shaped parenthood, and how “regenerative agriculture” is simply the way things have been done on his farm - and many others - for generations. Visit Fairfield Farms Angus, which Bishop owns and operates with his wife, Meagan, and their four children on Instagram.

Hugo and Ross Turner are twin brothers and professional adventurers. I first discovered them when I came across their various diet and fitness experiments, in which they have studied the differences between a vegan vs. omnivore diet, weighted vs. body weight gym programs, animal protein vs. plant protein for muscle gain, and a 20-minute vs. a 40-minute gym program to discover if 40 minutes actually offers twice the benefits (you'd be surprised at the results, which we discuss in this podcast!). In 2007, Hugo narrowly missed paralysis after breaking his neck in a diving accident. In the mix of emotions that followed, a drive emerged to pursue their passion for exploration, anchored by three values: purpose, discovery, and always doing it together. Ross and Hugo have since gone on to complete many expeditions which include rowing the Atlantic Ocean, attempting to cross the Greenland ice cap, climbing Mt. Elbrus, and reaching several of the world's continental poles of inaccessibility. Over the years, the twins have compared the clothing systems, kits, and food of past explorers against the latest modern equivalents to understand the performance differences. Working with scientific teams, they have provided unique insights into how the human body is affected by technology. They have reached several of the world's poles of inaccessibility while testing technology that helps fight climate change (like electric motorbikes), and recently tested a yacht powered by an electric motor and hydrogen fuel cell. These projects have supported the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. In this episode, you'll get an insider's look into the Turner Twins' various experiments and journeys mentioned above, plus you'll discover much more about their adventurous, explorative, and innovative lives. With that said, let's dive into how they can enhance your understanding of geography, technology, science, human performance, and history! Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions: Stefanie: I am happy to have come so far with my health journey with your help, podcast and all the information you kindly give out to us, a big thank you! I have been able to control my psoriasis and overall skin problems. I've done a few detox, and the cbo protocol which helped me tremendously but I still see some signs of liver problems. I don't eat meat for the most part, but when I do specially meat from another country I notice my one psoriasis skin spot will start to flare and I do feel somewhat my liver swollen. I have been checked out before on sonograms and liver seems to be 'healthy', although I can cut animal protein. I wanted to know what test to perform or how can I fix this once and for all? I am certain its the animal protein, as soon as I eat it I feel the flare the next day. Sheila: Hello,I'm on week 3 of CBO protocol. I just started week 3 and I started getting hives on my legs. One ingredient is bromelain in the Candida supplement. Bromelain is a “red” on my IGg food sensitivity test. Is there another product I could use instead of this one? Please advise. Thank you for your time. Sheila Erica: If I have a 2 high 2 low pattern on my HTMA test, would you recommend infrared sauna 4-5x a week? I have high levels of mold in my body and I'd like to start working on detoxing it out, but it seems like my sodium and potassium and both quite low and I'm wondering if it's a good idea. With that being said, if I did sauna that much a week, how much sodium / potassium might you recommend I take daily to replenish? Thank you! Brittany: Hi Stephen, A few months back, I had strep and simultaneously coronavirus NL63. (Yay to school germs coming home from my kindergartner) during this diagnosis I went to the hospital because not only did I have bad congestion, but my ears were in so much pain I couldn't even try to sleep. They treated me with meds for strep and ibuprofen for ear pain. The ear pain has improved since but 3 months later my ears still hurt on a daily basis, not excruciating, but enough to bother me during the day. I went to a ENT and he said it's my TMJ. I've had TMJ and never had ear pain from it, it's interesting that my ear pain only started when I had bad congestion from strep and the virus. My hearing test came back fine. Any clue why it could be that my ears still hurt? I'm desperate for help! Daniel: Hi Dr. Cabral, Big fan of your show and thanks for all you do. I recently ordered your melatonin, I noticed that it includes Apple Juice, Red Currant, and Stevia. As someone who intermittently fasts multiple times a week, I'm wondering if taking Equilife Melatonin is breaking my fast due to these incredients? Thanks! Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Audrey: Hi Dr. Cabral, I noticed on your resource page you do not have the Berky water filter listed anymore. Instead you have the Aqua True listed. Why is that? It seems like the Berky is a better choice because it is stainless steal and vs. the Aqua Tru that has a plastic carafe which would lead to leaching. Thanks so much for all you do! Lara: Hi, dr. Cabral.. In baking recipes there's often tapioca starch or cornstarch.. same with gluten free flours.. If I wanted to substitute those in recipes (or make my own gluten free flour in a healthier way), what would be good substit utes? Are arrowroot powder and cassava flour good, healthier options? As per my (Google) research, they are not interchangeable - don't have the same effect.. do you have any suggestions? What does your family usually use in baking? Thank you and happy healing, everyone.. Melissa: Hi Dr. Cabral- is it possible to heal group B strep? If so, what are the ways to do this? Thank you! Desiree: I've been told that our bodies more efficiently absorb animal nutrients and protein; and these nutritionists have references and studies to support this. Of course all of these people agree on getting your animal products from grass fed/finished, non gmo, no hormones, pasture raised farms. People also discuss anti-nutrients in vegetables (which I know can be greatly reduced with cooking). They urge people to use animal fats to cook with due to the low chance of oxidation and that saturated fats have been unfairly demonized. With meat being one of the most nutrient dense foods one can eat when properly sourced. I suppose my question is, is there validity to a diet that is more meat/animal centered? Also what are your thoughts on absorption and anti-nutrients in vegetables vs meat. Steve: I have chronically low vitamin D levels. I also have crohns disease which contributes to the low D along with low iron, b-12 and some other lab red flags. I have very high inflammation labels from both CRP and fecal calprotectin tests. I had been taking 10,000 i.u.'s of D for a long time and my D level on my most recent test was 23. I also live in arizona and get quite a bit of sun. I have started taking 25,000 i.u's a day of D (along with K2) to see if that will be enough to get my D level up. I really hate to go much higher than that, but I might have to. I am starting to believe that I will never get my inflammation markers down if I dont get my D up Desiree: I was wondering if you could do a product review on fairlife nutrition plan 30g protein shake. I also have a question about milk and dairy. I know you have an entire podcast on how it's essential to cut out dairy from cows but I'm hoping as long as you get high quality dairy if that makes a difference? I'm a bit of a milk fiend and cutting it out of my diet fills me with sadness. Thank you for everything you do! I just read your book and it's truly eye opening and I'm recommending it to everyone I know.
