Dealing with all humanitarian aspects of emergencies

On Monday's show: Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has openly speculated about eliminating FEMA. Whether that happens or not, how would Greater Houston handle another hurricane -- or any other disaster -- if FEMA no longer existed or its role were changed? Also this hour: We offer Houstonians a chance to vent about their pet peeves about life in our city. And Jeff Balke updates us on the latest developments in sports.
On Tuesday's show: Wet weather continues across Greater Houston the next couple of days. We find out what may be in store from Eric Berger of Space Center Weather walks us through the forecast. And is the tide turning in local school board battles over library books and gender identity policies? We get an update on some changes to the makeup of the school boards at Katy ISD and Fort Bend ISD and what that might mean for those districts. Also this hour: The Trump administration wants to incentivize Americans to have more children due to falling birth rates. So, how do rates in our region compare nationally, and what are the factors causing them to drop? Then, we examine how tariffs are affecting local businesses and communities with ties to China. And, with hurricane season about to start, we go shopping for an emergency kit.
While the world seems calm, in terms of natural disasters, I wanted to offer three levels of ways to be prepared. Natural disasters are unexpected events and I want you to be prepared for anything that may come your way. I used two filters to concoct these courses of action to be prepared; “What would be harder to do once the disaster has happened?” And “How can I invest in being more self-sufficient and less dependent?” Preparedness is not a necessity but a way for you to be part of the solution. Level One - Go Bag! You get news that you need to go see someone in the hospital or you need to evacuate, what do you take with you? I encourage everyone to have a Go Bag and fill it with items that would make you more comfortable. Think, if you were going to travel on an airplane, what would you want? I provided so many options of how to be prepared that this will become a reliable episode to share with anyone facing an unexpected event but hopefully everyone hears it before they are desperate for the information! Level Two - Packed Suit Case I understand this may seem a little next level for planning but when we get caught off guard and called away from home, our brains are scattered and it would be easy to forget things. I advise you to slowly build this packed suitcase. Maybe during Black Friday you pick up an extra curling iron so you don't have to worry about forgetting to pack the one you use daily. Half of my suitcase is always ready with my toothbrush, brush, sound machine, curling iron, and so forth. In the event I needed to drop everything and go or simply to travel, I'd throw in some jammies and a few outfits, and out the door I'd fly. If you have fires creeping close to your house I want you to be prepared to be able to do the same! Level Three - Information Management When I used to organize people's homes and paper, I would use their filing cabinets until one time I was forced to tell a client to leave them behind. That paperwork is so valuable and I never wanted to tell someone that again. That's why Organize 365® switched to binders, paper needs to be portable. When fires are near your home and you need to get away quickly, there's no need to worry, grab them and go! When I was settling my father's estate, I never found myself near the filing cabinets that had all the information, when I was being asked for it. You need easy access and it's not always due to a natural disaster or an emergency. Prepare, Support, Cycle Preparedness I asked the question: “Can a natural disaster be a Golden Window?” Sounded crazy as I said it but I thought of a few ways it could be viewed that way. I shared ways of how to be prepared with food, water, and power, in the event of a natural disaster. In the Organize 365® community there is a way to find support and give support. I never want people to be forgotten after these tragedies so we have the “Forget Me Not” Basket in Carolina Blue in effort to honor past events and future events. It's also where you can go to download the mini medical binder to have in these go bags and suit cases. These natural disasters happen and we watch on tv helplessly. We now have a way to help anyone from 1 person to thousands going through the same thing in the community after the camera have gone home and the news coverage has stopped. And lastly, stay prepared by including updating these items each home planning day. I don't want people to be caught off guard and unprepared so I wanted to share how you to can be in a constant state of preparedness too. Luke 6:27-38 Some disasters are difficult to avert, but we can take away some of the destruction by practicing and learning how to recover in advance of that disaster. For a life of faith, practicing love of all (including our enemies), generosity, all the things recounted in this description of the children of God helps us navigate life when things do get tough, much like a tornado preparedness kit or chainsaw training does.

This episode features a conversation with disaster communication specialist, Dr Dennis John Sumaylo. It was recorded in June 2023.In his work, Dennis investigates the intersection of pre-disaster communication and community engagement in the context of geographic isolation and socio-economic inequalities. Examining these issues has helped him design multimodal and gamified learning tools for supplementing disaster risk reduction classes in the Philippines. His new book, entitled, Engaging Isolated Communities in Disaster Preparation and Communication in the Philippines is published through Springer Nature, explores social power, relationships, and experiences as avenues to community engagement in pre-disaster communication.Amongst other things, Dennis and I discussed a range of real-world audiences and the ways that their respective experiences with disasters impact their communications needs, we delved into the roles of trust and power in disaster communication, and the value of a media spotlight when it comes to disaster recovery and relief. Run the fire drills, tornado drills, evacuation drills, and malignant hypothermia drills. Learn them when the stakes aren't high and the pressure is low, so that when the time comes, you can fall back on what you've already learned and you'll be able to successfully navigate whatever disaster you find yourself in." ---- Articles On-the-Go presents perioperative insights from written articles in a creative, easy to listen, audio format. On this episode of The Build Podcast, Matt and Tim Hill discuss all things maintenance: annual maintenance, seasonal maintenance, and all the things you need to think about after you've completed the house to make sure it continues to function in tip top shape. They'll also introduce some considerations for both pre and during construction that will help to support a “maintenance free” house – but really there is no such thing as a maintenance free house—but a house that will ultimately look, feel, and perform just as well.
On Monday's Houston Matters: On Sunday, the Texas Supreme Court issued an emergency stay that reinstates Gov. Greg Abbott's executive order banning local municipalities and officials from issuing mask mandates. Last week, Dallas, Bexar, and Harris Counties all secured temporary restraining orders from state judges blocking that executive order. The ruling is temporary with the court still to make a final ruling in the case. We learn what the ruling means for the state and for the lawsuit recently filed by Harris County. Also this hour: This week marks six months since the deadly power failure that crippled Texas. Mose Buchele, energy and environment for KUT in Austin, discusses what led to that disaster and how it's being addressed, which is the subject of his new podcast, The Disconnect: Power, Politics and the Texas Blackout. Then, according to a new study, more than half of all the buildings in the lower 48 states are in disaster hotspots, threatened by future storms, floods, wildfires, tornadoes, and earthquakes. But then, we knew that, right? Here in the Houston area, basically every building exists under such threat. We may not be able to do much about the already built environment, but what more can we do to ensure we protect new developments as much as possible? And we get an update on Houston sports.

I share my favorite takeaways and reflections from Ep. 52 with Staci Bartley and Ep. 53 with Tina Ginn, exploring the importance of learning from the past and having the forethought for preparing for the future. Life is messy, and we can learn from our messes, and we can clean them up, too. If we could learn how to re-frame the challenges of our lives by asking ourselves better questions, I do believe we would spend far less time emotionally suffering. Staci, through early teen pregnancy and three marriages, she's learned this the hard way. And, perhaps that is the way? The mishaps, hurdles, and pivots that we find ourselves in are a part of the journey. But, I guess the better question is: Why does it take so many of us so long to get the memo? Just as it takes us a while to realize that messes are a part of life and that we are capable of learning and cleaning them up and preventing future ones, so too, it takes us to learn a little too late how ill-prepared we are for tragedy or disaster. Whether you want to learn how to prepare for love, tragedy, or disaster, the last two episodes are for you, and this episode includes my highlights. Tina, like many grievers, has found her passion in her pain. What started out as a career as a financial advisor, where she was well-versed in risk management, morphed into helping others prepare for the worst in their lives. Having lived through a forest fire evacuation order, the quick decline of a dear friend's health and death due to cancer, a traumatic car accident which later led to losing her job, to a subsequent divorce and estrangement with her children, Tina has learned the importance of connection and preparedness. She brings her passion for helping people become prepared for the worst. She recognizes that the last thing people want to worry about, when tragedy strikes or when there are moments to make decisions, are the logistics of their lives. Through her app, Your Backup Plan, she helps individuals get their lives in order so that, when tragedy or nature does strike, your life is in the palm of your hand. This not only makes your family's lives easier if something happens to you but also your own if it's you at the center of the unfortunate experience. Tina says we shouldn't wait until someone is dying, or we are dying, to prepare; by then, it's too late. Additionally, the conversations you want to be having in these moments do not include the bills that need to be paid and how they're paid. Also for example, where social media passwords are, what to do with a beloved collection, or a last will and testament. These issues and logistics can be documented in advance so that anyone close can pick up the pieces with less stress. Also, in turn, this allows for more time for deep connection when it counts.RESOURCES/CONNECT:WebsiteYouTube Instagram | Facebook"In the Blink of an Eye"Emerging Blueprint [Launching July 2021]______Need help?National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-8255Crisis Text Line provides free, 24/7 support via text message. Have you forgotten what it felt like to start your business? I’ve lost count of the number of business owners who have said, “If I had had any idea how hard it would be to get this business where it is today, I’m not sure I would’ve done it.” Business owners usually nod their heads at this. Yes, it was hard. But, you learned a lot. Many of the lessons learned at that point in the business get lost or forgotten as the company grows. We’ve talked about innovation and disruption as well as pivots this year. The pandemic emphasized the importance of scenario planning and contingency plans. I invite you to listen to the path Soundé took, and let the possibilities for the future wash over you as you reimagine the business you lead. Guest: Joe Elmore joined Charleston Animal Society as its President and CEO in 2012. Joe has been recognized by the Governors of Washington and the Virgin Islands, has received the American Red Cross Tiffany Award for Management Excellence, and was awarded the U.S. Dept. of Defense Medal for his work in America’s first Persian Gulf Conflict. Joe was named one of 9 Maddie’s Heroes for inspirational and innovative leadership in its 2015 inaugural class. Main Question: How should animal welfare organizations prepare for disasters – such as hurricanes, floods, and wildfires – given that policies and staffing may be severely affected by the current public health crisis? Takeaways: Make sure your staff members each have personal evacuation plans for their animals and family. Review disaster protocols at least once a year with all of your staff and any volunteers who would likely help. Identify partner organizations that will accept animals from your shelter if you have to evacuate (you can reciprocate when they need help). Be sure to make connections with local Emergency Management officials too. During the current public health crisis, these connections are more important than ever. Hurricanes, and other weather events that usually occur with advance warning, lend themselves to time frame action plans that detail steps to take 1 week out, 3 days out, 2 days, 1 day, and 12 hours. Record a 2 to 3 minute video to share with the public on how to prepare to evacuate pets and farm animals. Release this at the start of any weather-related disaster season and share it again before any individual major storm or event. You can also get advice out to the public through the local media. The actions taken now by countries and governments globally is crucial in limiting the impact of the covid-19 coronavirus - but has the response been strong enough? In the pod for this week’s episode are New Scientist journalists Rowan Hooper, Penny Sarchet and Graham Lawton. The team is joined by two experts from University College London: professor of risk and disaster reduction David Alexander, and professor of ecology and biodiversity Kate Jones. The panel explores just how prepared we are for this global emergency, and also looks at how diseases that originate in wildlife may be increasing as a result of environmental challenges. And if you want to hear what else is going on in the world, there’s more than just coronavirus on the lineup. The team highlights ‘bonehenge’, a 22,000-year-old structure made of mammoth bones, discusses the incredible finding of a planet where it rains liquid iron, and uncovers the evolutionary origin of the human ability to run. Over the last five years, 40% of businesses have experienced some sort of business interruption, costing on average, even for a small company, upward of $8,000 per hour of downtime. You need to have a plan because it's not a question of whether a disaster will happen or not. It's a question of when. The most crucial components to getting back up and running can include: New office space - Where is it, how you set it up and do so cost effectively? Restore lost power - A company like Agility can, within 12 to 24 hours, deploy enough power to run your building or your campus of buildings. Restore communications - You'll need to connect with satellite or local LTE communications to reestablish voice and internet connectivity. Accessing your data in the cloud - You'll need a computer to access that data, power to plug in that computer, and the internet for that computer to access to cloud.
