Andrew joins Ben this week for a discussion about a particular mythical beast, cultural symbol, and imaginary icon. One in the POÄNG and one in the pandemic chair—the guys fill us in on what they have been doing lately. Andrew has been thinking about his gardening hobby, researching a method for aging stainless steel, and creating all sorts of artsy things for his Advanced Dungeons Have Dragons pin Crowdfundr campaign. Ben has been pondering what he's going to do for the April Fools' Day episode this year and playing Ender Magnolia: Bloom in the Mist (compliments of Binary Haze Interactive). Once they have concluded with the pleasantries, they enter… THE DRAGON! Together, they offer up a smorgasbord of pop culture ramblings and video game nonsense, including how their AD&D experiences shaped their creative natures. Then they navigate through a movie and music pop-culture-ridden obstacle course until they arrive at their video game destination. Andrew talks about Adventure for the Atari 2600, and Ben talks about one of the first laserdisc arcade games created in part by a former Disney artist and animator. *** 00:00:20 - A welcoming, the new threats, invest in leach farms, and Behind the Bastards 00:03:13 - Andrew left speechless on sadistics, Senator astronauts, and making it non-binary 00:07:33 - Stickers on Cybertrucks, rusting solutions for planters, and no library garlic this year 00:09:51 - The best kind of orchids, pro tips, the introduction is dragging, and the ADHD pin 00:12:58 - An ADHD Valentines Day, test printing for coffee mugs, and the AD&D pickup line 00:15:20 - Color printing wheels, and Ben has been playing Ender Magnolia: Bloom in the Mist 00:18:02 - Not from Altoona, Mango is a Flerken, attention… dragons, and the ADHD pin origin 00:21:35 - Ben offends bowlers, no calisthenics before bowling, and "Trogdor the Burninator" Strong Bad Email #58 - Dragon - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90X5NJleYJQ 00:23:50 - Another derogatory definition, Blair and the kaiju, and the word use blame game 00:28:07 - Taking back weird, tabletop lore, playing alone, and D&D method acting connections 00:32:29 - AARP Drews, rigorous screening, dragon drawing, and Pete's cost cutting measures 00:35:37 - Ariel is NOT dragon, movie audio n' picture books, H.R. Send us a textThe Midnight Calls is a denim and leather Rock & Roll outfit from Chicago. The band is fronted by Spain-born singer, Taran de Pablos and features guitarists Adam Arling (The Last Vegas, Urge Overkill, Warrior Soul) and Tony McQuaid (Loudmouth, Frank Bang & the Secret Stash), bassist Sean Barnes and drummer Chuck Harling. Their music is heavily influenced by the blues-infused sounds of classic bands like Aerosmith, The Rolling Stones or AC/DC. With a recipe based on grooves, hooks, and loud guitars as the main ingredients, The Midnight Calls are not reinventing the Rock & Roll wheel, but rather rolling it down the road with the swagger and style that you would expect from road-tested musicians that have toured the US and Europe a few times over. We were fortunate to have them in the studio to hear about their success and talk about their new single So Cold.Support the showPodcast edited by Paul Martin.Theme song courtesy of M&R Rush.www.rocknrollchicagopodcast.com
Pulp Fiction se estrenó en cines el 14 de octubre de 1994. La película que catapultó a Tarantino a la fama ha acabado convertida en una pieza de la cultura pop. PULSARS mark the end of that era. Leader Dave Trumfio (vocals, guitar, synths production and most anything else) and his younger brother Harry (drums) grew up playing music in a suburban Chicago basement. While still in his teens, Dave abandoned college-level music production and engineering studies to focus on songwriting and artist endeavors; his native talents soon found him an apprenticeship at Seagrape Studios working with talents as disparate as house music pioneer Mr Fingers, British first-wave stalwarts The Pretty Things and dub plate sessions with the legendary reggae producer / musician Niney The Observer . . . all within months of his first real go behind the mixing desk. Chicago's past musical glories felt far in the past then, replaced by a sea of skinny tie power pop bands, poofy hair metal combos of some timidity and a few rough-hewn exponents of sub-Buzzcocks punk and Fiorucci-ready new wave. Ignoring it all, Dave ran a small studio in a shared house he rented with friends before taking the risky - and expensive - plunge into opening a 'real' studio on the northwest corner of Wicker Park, soon to burst into a degree of infamy due to a small contingent of cult heroes who lived there for cheap rent and cheaper bars - Liz Phair, Eleventh Dream Day, Big Black, Urge Overkill, Tortoise et al. Daves role in all of this was minimal by nature; he preferred to record acts from farther afield - Billy Bragg, then-recent Chicago transplants Wilco, The Mekons, Young Marble Giants guitarist and songwriter Stuart Moxham, Barbara Manning, Captain Beefhearts main man Gary Lucas, an array of other acts from Iceland, Australia and all corners of the UK. Business was good, and it grew. A quick writer of odd pop ditties, one day Dave called in his brother Harry and recorded - in a single afternoon session - a set of nine demos known. The story's been related countless times, but within weeks the band was opening for Oasis and found itself being courted by a dozen labels. Their few local shows were undefinable. Dave played guitar and sang, Harry drummed triggered a reel of additional music, often with video backing . . . which dazzled spectators in that pre-laptop era. After months of negotiations, the band signed a multi-million deal with Almo Sounds, a new label begun by A&M founders Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss and distributed by Geffen. It was - and likely still is - the largest deal ever offered to an emerging Chicago musical act. The band engaged in numerous tours to support their self-titled debut, playing with Sean Lennon & Cibo Matto, Blur, Supergrass, and many others, as well as seemingly infinite jaunts to Japan, where Dave and Harry were hailed as heroes of subversive minimalist pop - the ecstatic screams of young fans at the first few notes of Submission To The Master& at first bewildering the brothers. Suddenly, the Almo Sounds deal with Geffen fell apart at the start of a tour supporting then-current sensations Weezer. Promotion was pulled; radio support for the first single from the album collapsed in a mere moment. Due to contractual vagaries, the band was allowed to complete a second (unreleased) album just before the label folded. And that was it, until the news of the 2021 release of Pulsar Transmissions", a collection of unheard songs and versions that the band recorded before and during their short-term deal. Rolling Stone offered their self titled debut ;Pulsars as one of the 40 greatest albums ever recorded by an act with one real album: PULSARS's Info Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/pulsarsband/?hl=en X / Twitter: https://x.com/PulsarsBand Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pulsarsofficial/

It is with heavy hearts that we deliver this week's episode honoring the passing of a true recording innovator and master of his craft: the amazing Mr. Steve Albini. Our good friend and fellow podcasting brother, Chris L joins us from the awesome Pod Of Thunder podcast. We knew we needed someone who represented the region of the country Steve was from and where he did most of his work; a magical faraway place called Chicagoland. Chris was a musician in the Chicago scene in the 90s when Albini's “production” was soaring, and his recordings were impacting the rock and alternative world hugely. This a tough loss, as Albini's ability to capture the true essence of a real rock n' roll band was second to none.New to InObscuria? Typically, what we do is exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Rest In Peace, Steve. Jason Sipe and Victor Riley of Chicago's own Salvation make a particularly powerful and vicious form of music that many might assume descends from grunge music of the 90's. On the surface perhaps, but this mighty trio, with the help of Mr Mike Lust, a prodigious producer (Urge Overkill, William Elliot Whitmore, everybody in Chicago) and two-time TGS guest has created a moving testament to laying it all out and flinging the resulting blood on the wall. MOCK (Reptillian), their 4th record and first with Reptillian conjures images of bands like Cows, The Jesus Lizard, Unsane, and yeah some very early Nirvana, but is also more immediate and complicated than those RIYLs. Victor and Jason represent what we all represent in the arts which is busting their respective humps to make music and take it on tour, by working jobs that allow them to do just that. In fact, they're both literally at their jobs on the day of this recording and it gives a nice peak into the life of a working musician.
Lose 10 choruses or 5 verses. Tim and Kellie talk about FIVE ROOMS, how it came about, what we did and how we did it. We explain the album title, *despite only really mentioning 3 of the rooms. We talk / go off on tangents about working with producer Anna Laverty, Kel's tenuous grasp of modern recording technology, the "Tim songs" which Kellie doesn't like, the concept of nostalgia, as it relates to music, and us, and diary writing vs social media. We also find ourselves discussing the Urge Overkill lobe in Tim's brain, at length, and as always: smashing the patriarchy. Other notable moments include "Men settle down!!!" and "This isn't my song any more" from Kellie. We deep dive into lengthy and sometimes entertaining stories around every single song, and we try to give them some context in the broader picture of the band and also the weird times during which they were written and recorded. There are plenty of laughs and much stupidity. Enjoy.More..Read about Five Rooms, with Lyrics etc: Buy vinylOn BandcampDon't Get Me Started videoLate to the Party video Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

This week on Dopey! In a super strong feminine show we are joined by Dopey Nation OG and Sea Swallow Me author, journalist and model Suki Jones! We hear her incredible journey from her traumatic childhood to her San Francisco heroin abuse! All the way from her motherhood on drugs all the way to her long term sobriety! PLUS Strung Out author, unlicensed advice columnist, and ex-elite equestrian Erin Khar is back mourning the tragic death of her ex Blackie Onassis the drummer from Urge Overkill! PLUS emails, my dad and a super special guest on a brand new grrrrl power episode of that good old Dopey Show! More about Dopey: Dopey Podcast is the world's greatest podcast on drugs, addiction and dumb shit. Chris and I were two IV heroin addicts who loved to talk about all the coke we smoked, snorted and shot, all the pills we ate, smoked, all the weed we smoked and ate, all the booze we consumed and all the consequences we suffered. After making the show for 2 and a half years, Chris tragically relapsed and died from a fentanyl overdose. Dopey continued on, at first to mourn the horrible loss of Chris, but then to continue our mission - which was at its core, to keep addicts and alcoholics company. Whether to laugh at our time in rehab, or cry at the worst missteps we made, Dopey tells the truth about drugs, addiction and recovery. We continually mine the universe for stories rife with debauchery and highlight serious drug taking and alcoholism. We also examine different paths toward addiction recovery. We shine a light on harm reduction and medication assisted treatment. We talk with celebrities and nobodies and stockpile stories to be the greatest one stop shop podcast on all things drugs, addiction, recovery and comedy!

The Urge Overkill singer/songwriter/bassist/guitarist spoke with Caropop on the 30th anniversary of the swaggering Chicago alt-rock band's breakthrough album, Saturation (and before the death of powerhouse drummer Blackie Onassis). Leaving behind Chicago's Touch & Go label (and prompting some hard feelings), Urge signed with Geffen, the label of Nirvana, with whom Urge was touring when that band exploded. Urge enlisted the Butcher Bros. production team known for its hip-hop work and came up with songs that burst from the speakers, such as “Sister Havana” and “Positive Bleeding.” They played with Paul Shaffer's band on The Late Show with David Letterman, and Quentin Tarantino featured Urge's cover of Neil Diamond's “Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon” in Pulp Fiction. All was good, right? Roeser explains how everything played out.

Record purveyor Karl Ueberbacher (Phoenix Records, Waitsfield Vermont) nixed his original album pick for a more in-your-face Spring-centric selection, 1993's 'Saturation' by Chicago postmodern rockers Urge Overkill. Shedding their noise-rock roots - their first few releases were recorded by Steve Albini - for a more alternative arena rock sound, their major-label debut combines a tongue-in-cheek irony with a weirdly appealing sense of rock and roll fun. Enjoy this encore presentation of a July 2020 episode of Vinyl Emergency. --- Los Angeles native Robert Fisher has designed records for some of the most popular acts of the alternative rock boom, including Beck, Weezer and No Doubt. But starting with 'Nevermind' onward -- including all posthumous releases following Kurt Cobain's death -- Robert is most recognized for being Nirvana's sole art director, creating iconic album covers, sleeves for singles, box set packaging and anything else relating to arguably the most important band of the last 30 years. Recently, Robert launched the @NirvanaBucket Instagram feed, dedicated to his body of work for the group and showcasing rare flyers, tapes, scrapped ideas and even items Kurt provided him for inspiration throughout their partnership. On today's show, Robert discusses how the final version of 'Nevermind' came to be, as well as stories surrounding Beck's 'Odelay' and Urge Overkill's 'Saturation'. His latest project for Nirvana is on the 'Live & Loud' 2LP set, released last summer, capturing the band's 1993 performance in Seattle for MTV. COVID sucks! I made it through however. Things I'm into right now... Well, I added cable extensions to the second gaming PC build. They add a little white color pop to the whole thing and it's nice as the lighting reflects off them. A few more benchmarks and this baby will be up for sale. Listening to that new Urge Overkill record and loving it. Picked up a few more used records for the collection as well. Pics here. Finished the first season of The Peacemaker and we loved it. Ben is now Senior software engineer for Weedmaps, in my option is really cool! We discussed Portland's underground music scene of the late 80's and decades that followed there after. Plus in the conversation we covered, Tributes to some famous Portland musicians, artists and influencers who passed away. mini-bio of Thrillhammer - Thrillhammer is a short lived band of legend. Madness and pure energy followed the fellows (who would later form Hazel, Pond and Rotor) whereever they went ultimately resulting in the bands untimely demise. In 1992 Rough Trade in Germany posthumously issued the bands only release Giftless. Produced by Steve Albini the record is a document of Thrillhammer's vibrant power and strength. Thrillhammer was formed in 1990 in Portland Oregon by David Triebwasser (Pond) on drums, Pete Krebs (Hazel) guitar and vocals, and Ben Munat (Rotor) on bass. The band managed a few one off shows in Seattle, Olympia and Portland and a short west coast tour rife with cops, guns, false charges of kidnapping, beatings by drug crazed maniacs, and high profile shows with the likes of Nirvana, Steel Pole Bathtub, Flipper and Urge Overkill. The band returned home and called it quits. But that's only if we're talking about American television. Great Britain was ahead of the United States in this department by almost a decade. Rebecca asks when the "first consensualinterracial kiss" (kiss between dark skinned and light skinned actors) aired on American TV, since the Uhura/Kirk kiss was technically coerced by way of alien mind control in this particular episode. That's a harder question to answer. With these qualifiers, I couldn't find documentation of the "second interracial kiss" or the "first consensual interracial kiss." (If anyone out there has more on this, I'd be very interested to know the answer). Wikipedia has a fascinating entry on televised interracial kisses, documenting earlier examples (than the Uhura/Kirk kiss) of kisses between Asian and white actors and Hispanic and white actors (all light skinned actors) and examples on British television of kisses between actors with dark and light skin: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_interracial_kiss_on_televisionTribe of Creepy Children: It's interesting to note that the actor who plays Jahn, Michael J. Pollard, was 27 at the time. He was pretty short, so he was able to play a teenager throughout his 20s. He played a lot of memorable side characters, including CW Moss in Bonnie and Clyde (which came out in 1967). He was in lots of other movies and shows, like Dick Tracey and Scrooged and Roxanne, the Steve Martin movie. You can google him. The other kids are mainly the children of actors in Star Trek: William Shatner's daughters Lisabeth and Melanie, Grace Lee Whitney's son Scott, Vincent McEveety's son Steven, and Gene Roddenberry's daughters, Darleen and Dawn. Two other children, Phil and Iona Morris, were the children of Mission Impossible actor Greg Morris, and they later appeared in other Star Trek shows. Phil Morris was in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock in a bit part and then was a guest star on Babylon 5, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Star Trek: Voyager. Iona Morris was in a 2 part episode of Voyager but is mainly known as a voice actor. She was the voice for Storm in the animated X-Men series and in Spider Man: the Animated Series.
What do Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ice Cube, Status Quo, and Neil Diamond all have in common? Tana Douglas. She's recognised as the world's first female roadie, and got her start as a teenager working with a young band who were about to release their debut album. The band was AC/DC, and that story is just one of hundreds that have filled her extraordinary life. Tana would go on to tech for The Who at Wembley Stadium, Iggy Pop in Amsterdam, even Elton John, playing a birthday party at Windsor Castle. She's just published her story, a memoir titled LOUD, which captures not just the wild tales from the road but also the spirit of the crew who make magic happen every night on stage. It's a brilliant read, and I was so excited to meet Tana when she joined me to Take 5. She didn't disappoint. This is as much about a trailblazer as it is a testament to the many roadies who bring our favourite music to life on stage.
