“I didn't see it as a business,” says creator Alma Har'el. “It was a calling that was on my mind. I didn't start as a filmmaker. I was many things on the way there — theater, video arts, music videos, documentaries — it just sort of unfolded over years until I got to make my first film.” Alma's first writing credit is Lady in the Lake, but as a Director, she's known for Bombay Beach, LoveTrue, Jellywolf, and the Shia LaBeouf inspired story, Honey Boy. “At first, it was just an attraction. I can't really explain it — it controlled my dreams.” While hosting a television show, she knew she wanted to direct. “I started with photography, then music videos, and VJ. With VJing, you play live visuals in clubs and music concerts while everyone is high on Molly and acid. No one is looking at the screen,” she jokes, “but you're connected with them in your mind.” “I think that was my first dream, to play visuals as if they were music or an instrument on stage. It was a need to have an extension of my dreams.” This led her to working with musicians like Beirut, Paul Smith, Jack Peñate, Sigur Rós, and even Bob Dylan. Want more? Last Stop Before Chocolate Mountain è proiettato a Venezia il 23 gennaio 2024 all'interno della rassegna Rovine d'America. On a little known shore inland from Los Angeles lies a post apocalyptic seaside town and one of the art world's most interesting happenings. Founded in 2015, Bombay Beach Biennale is a renegade celebration of art, music, and philosophy. Pushing through a few hours of sleep, cofounder Tao Ruspoli and I sat down at the Biennale for a conversation. On the show we discuss the ecological and philosophical paradox of the Salton Sea and the strange fate of Bombay Beach. Tao shares why great art is made from irresolvable contradictions and inhospitable environments. We explore this year's “Questioning Hierarchy” theme and Tao reveals how Bombay Beach changed him. We invite festival producer Dulcinee DeGuere and Neuroscientist Dr. Patrick House on stage to share the art of facilitation and intrusive déjà vu. Finally Tao shares his vision of life as a festival and how the existence of death is what makes meaning possible. Tao Ruspoli an Italian-American filmmaker, photographer, musician, and co-founder of The Bombay Beach Biennale. His films include Fix, Being in the World, and the 2017 exploration of polyamory, Monogamish. Dulcinee DeGuere is also a filmmaker, this was her first year producing the Biennale. Tao hosts the Being in the World Podcast with neuroscientist Dr Patrick House. Bombay Beach Biennale transforms abandoned housing, vacant lots, and decaying shoreline into a unique canvas for creative expression. Artists, philosophers, creators and makers across many mediums donate their time and talents to the volunteer-led happening. On the pod this week, we welcome Alma Har'el, director of Honey Boy, the Shia LaBeouf biopic written by the man himself. Plus we delve in to Chinese heartbreaker So Long My SonSo Long My Son explores the impact of China's one child policy. It spans from the 1980s to the present day, regularly shifting back and forth in time. The story details the changing fortunes of a family and those around them, and how government policy has consistently affected their lives.Directed by Alma Har'el, in her first foray in to narrative fiction, having previously directed the documentaries Bombay Beach and Love True; Honey Boy is written by Shia LaBeouf, whilst he was in Rehab, and is a retelling of his experience as a child actor, his tumultuous relationship with his father (who LaBeouf plays a proxy of here) and his reconciliation with his experiences.Discussing the films this week are Jake Cunningham, Sam Howlett, Kelly Powell and Ella KempFollow the team on Social Media:@jakehcunningham - Jake@samhowlett_1 - Sam@ks_powell - Kelly@csquinlan - CaitlinProduced by Jake CunninghamEdited by Mark Towers Hosted on Acast. In this episode, you'll hear two Q&As from the opening weekend of HONEY BOY: The first with writer/actor Shia LaBeouf, moderated by Ben Lyons (The Lyons Den Podcast), and the second with LaBeouf, Director Alma Har'el, and actors Noah Jupe and Byron Bowers, moderated by Scott Mantz. These Q&As were recorded at the Landmark in Los Angeles on 11/8/19 and 11/9/19. From a screenplay by Shia LaBeouf, based on his own experiences, award-winning filmmaker Alma Har'el (Bombay Beach, LoveTrue) brings to life a young actor's stormy childhood and early adult years as he struggles to reconcile with his father and deal with his mental health. Fictionalizing his ascent to stardom, and subsequent crash-landing into rehab and recovery, Har'el casts Noah Jupe (A Quiet Place) and Lucas Hedges (Boy Erased, Manchester by the Sea) as Otis Lort, navigating different stages in a frenetic career. LaBeouf takes on the therapeutic challenge of playing a version of his own father, an ex-rodeo clown and a felon. Dancer-singer FKA twigs makes her feature-film debut, playing neighbor and kindred spirit to the younger Otis in their garden-court motel home. Har'el's feature narrative debut is a one-of-a-kind collaboration between filmmaker and subject, exploring art as medicine and imagination as hope through the life and times of a talented, traumatized performer who dares to go in search of himself.
