Today I interview Bunny ( cheap van life with bunny) and talk about the rise of interest in the infamous Slab City. Trigger warning as this episode contains some pretty graphic stories.Slab City, also called The Slabs, is an unincorporated, off-the-grid alternative lifestyle community consisting largely of snowbirds in the Salton Trough area of the Sonoran Desert, in Imperial County, California. It took its name from concrete slabs that remained after the World War II Marine Corps Camp Dunlap training camp was torn down.[3] Slab City is known for attracting people who want to live outside mainstream society.

This is a trailer for Ep 199. Due to the sensitive content of the episode most of this weeks episode is in the Patreon. Link below to hear the full episode. Cassandra Crose (Enty's ex) and I get together. She tells me what happened in court last week with Crazy Days and Night's Enty (The man behind the Blinds aka John Nelson). She won against his restraining order, so his goal of silencing her is killed for now. I was so curious how this anonymous gossiper would appear and what he would say under oath after he cheated on his wife and left Cassandra and her children with disabilities high and dry. We hear all the twists and turns of his testimony through Cassandra's lense. For example, he says that he thinks Cassandra is part of an Aaron Carter fan cult that murders people!? We wonder if the lines between podcast land and the real world are merging for Enty. Cassandra then gets shocked with NEW news right after we wrap recording! We discuss why she won against Enty. We then move on to introduce the Patreons to Cassandra's passion helping true crime victims and I give you an introduction in to some of her favorites at the moment and give you the cliff notes of Slab City, Delphi Murders and Dane Elkins Mystery as Cassandra comments on them. There have been many articles written about the Enty / Cassandra story now in Daily Beast and others and even a documentary in the works, but now we attempt to finish the story for all of you real time...but is it truly over? For the full episode and access to Dana's Patreon community! https://www.patreon.com/DishingDramaWithDanaWilkeyCassandra's PatreonDrenched in Drama: https://www.patreon.com/DrenchedinDrama25Support the showDana is on Cameo!Support me in buying my merch, you can buy anything on this website and if you type in "dana" in coupon code you get free shipping and I get 50% of proceeds. https://shop.blingisthenewblack.com/collections/danawilkeyFollow Dana: @Wilkey_Dana$25,000 Song - Apple Music$25,000 Song - SpotifyTo support the show and listen to full episodes, become a member on PatreonTo learn more about sponsorships, email DDDWpodcast@gmail.comDana's YouTube Channel

So...how did I end up in Slab City...? Well..it's a long story. But the short version is a friend of mine asked me if I wanted to go to an anarchy festival next door to a meth head campground where people would be exploding home made bombs and setting cars on fire and I said....maybe? But my curiosity about Slab City had started years ago because let me just give you a brief description of what it is. Slab City is a plot of land that is still technically up for grabs out in the middle of nowhere 3 hours past Indio (Coachella) in California. Travelers, veterans, retirees, anarchists, transgenders, renegades from the law, meth heads, artists, counter culture champions, musicians, families, anyone and everyone can be found here in this tiny little oasis in the desert. There is no plumbing, electricity, mail, police, or taxes. It's a perfect little ecosystem of what can happen when humans are left to organize themselves from scratch and find ways to live in Harmony with nature while having their basic food, shelter and water needs met. Slab City has a Library, a farm, a Internet cafe, a hotel, a hot springs, a art collective, a stage with live music, people selling crafts and jewelry spread around and a fully functioning meth lab. Some plots are beautiful, with a well organized set up, some are actual garbage dumps, with questionable humans living in ways you wouldn't want to imagine. It is full of some of the most colorful humans you could imagine, and for someone like me, it's kind of a paradise. No one here has anything to lose, and nothing to hide. They have faced the elements and themselves by living out here alone in the desert and they seriously don't give a fuck. It's WONDERFUL. Before you get the Slab City is the amazing "Salvation Mountain" Leonard Knights 28 year sacrifice to God. It's insane. Primary colors pop in all directions turning a once mud light colored desert floor into a giant work of technicolor art. It's truly something everyone should see once in their lifetime. I spent four days living in an RV and trying to get people to talk to me. It wasn't easy. People rightfully so are a bit cautious when a loudmouth jewess rolls up demanding friendship and community. But I eventually won a couple over and then the doors to Narnia were opened and I fell head first into this very specific slice of the planet with it's own militia, rules and regulations. love Slab City, it's full of men like him who have a heart of gold and stories until the cows come home. The main message I got here was 1. Everything is an illusion 2. We are all connected beings 3. Why would you slave your life away working to own things that provide you no pleasure? In this episode, I talked about a place called Slab City in California, which I saw on YouTube. Slab City is a lawless area where people live freely. The phrase 'without law' might make it seem like a scary place, but on closer inspection, it appears people live there respecting each other, unbound by money or possessions. As someone who just bought a new iPhone, this was a good opportunity for me to rethink what it means to own things and to have money. I think it's a very interesting town, so listening to this episode might also be a good chance for everyone to reconsider our modern consumer society. We welcome Omar Lopez to Suede Memories as the first musician to share their inspirational story of where pursuing one's dreams can get you. Born and raised in Calipatria, California, Omar shares the unique memories of his experiences growing up in the Imperial Valley; from hanging out at the Salvation Mountain to exploring the incomparable Slab City. In a town as small as Calipatria, Omar recalls his first introduction to music and what lead him to pick up an instrument for the first time. Although he had no idea his talent would take him to play all over the world, Omar discusses the impact a high school teacher had on him, which resulted in him attending San Diego State University to continue his education. Omar's dedication and love for music has allowed him to connect with people from all over the globe and shares some of his most memorable experiences connecting with other cultures which has contributed to his remarkable out look on life. Aside from his experiences touring and playing with a variety of bands and musicians, Omar shares how he began playing bass for the Original Wailers and how seven years later, they continue to impact the world through their music. Omar has notably played alongside Poncho Sanchez, Stanley Jordan, Jose Luis "Changuito" Quintana, Chunky Sanchez, and San Diego's favorite, the B-Side Players; he also created the Suede Memories jingle in collaboration with Manny and Elsie Cisneros. Omar Lopez has accomplished great heights in his young career and continues to thrive not only professionally, but in all other aspects of life which is why Omar Lopez is and will be one of the world's most notable musicians of our time.

Pour aller plus loin Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Dorothea Lange, Diane Arbus, Stephen Shore, William Eggleston, Jeff Wall, Don DeLillo, Jim Harrison, Russel Banks, Toni Morrison, James Baldwin, Philip Roth, Édouard Glissant, Patrick Chamoiseau, John Akomfrah, Francis Alÿs, Steve McQueen, Mohamed Bourouissa, Wang Bing, Roberto Minervini, Peter Watkins, Gianfranco Rosi, FSA Liens https://www.instagram.com/hennolaura/ https://laurahenno.com/ https://www.instagram.com/podcastvisions/ https://www.visionspodcast.fr/
Today we will discuss the meaning of life. I record this from Slab City, CA where a bunch of people have joined together in an off-grid community to live in what is called "The last free place on earth" and it begs the question about what is the meaning of life. Is it to just avoid society or is it more? What is the example Christ gives us? Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 Titus 2:14
This week is a very horrible and difficult topic, but one we thought needed to be covered, and hopefully we did it justice. This week we are talking about Transgender people who have been murdered. This topic highlights the abuse and issues trans people face every single day, as well as the ultimate price many pay simply for living as their true selves. We try our best to be allies, and we hope shedding some light on these absolutely terrible cases will help put an end to violence against trans people, because it's simply not okay. Sorry for no fun quips this week, twisted listeners, but this topic is just too dark. What do Salvation Mountain, East Jesus, and West Satan have in common? If you guessed they're locations in a video game then you're only half right. These eclectic phrases are names of subdivisions in the infamous Californian town known as Slab City. Home to mostly squatters and vagabonds, Slab City has been hailed as the last free city in the world. Residents enjoy no modern amenities like running water or electricity. However, they relish their off-grid lifestyle in one of the strangest places left on earth. Not only is the town itself incredibly unique, but the geographic location tells a story of its own. This is the unbelievable Slab City, California. Is it the last free place on earth? Not really, but it is probably the closest city on earth to it. Slab City is an eclectic place where people who can't fit into modern society thrive. The residents love their homes and are thankful for the community that they have built there. The city may not be the prettiest in the world and it may lack much of what people in the U.S. have become accustomed to, however it offers its residents the life they've always dreamed of. For that, the locals love it.
In this episode, I chat with my nomad friend, Becca. We discuss her starting road life during the pandemic, the benefits of connecting with others, our similar experiences visiting the infamous Slab City, and her love of art and outdoor adventures. If you want to connect with her, she can be reached on Instagram at becca_m_m. Her adorable dachshund is also a great follow on Instagram at gusthedachshund.

Coined in 1990 by anarchist scholar Hakim Bey, the term temporary autonomous zone (T.A.Z.) seeks to preserve the creativity, energy and enthusiasm of autonomous uprisings without replicating the inevitable betrayal and violence that has been the reaction to most revolutions throughout history. The answer, according to Bey, lies in refusing to wait for a revolutionary moment, and instead create spaces of freedom in the immediate present whilst avoiding direct confrontation with the state. BURNING MAN. Once a year, tens of thousands of people gather in Nevada's Black Rock Desert to create Black Rock City, a temporary metropolis dedicated to community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance. In this crucible of creativity, all are welcome. Burning Man is not a festival. Burning Man is a community. A temporary city. A global cultural movement that doesn't book acts or provide entertainment. What happens here is up to you! There is no corporate sponsorship. You are entering a “decommodified” space that values who you are, not what you have. You are expected to collaborate, be inclusive, creative, connective and clean up after yourself. Participate actively as a citizen of Black Rock City (Temporary city) (NEVADA) approximately 100 north-northeast of Reno. SLAB CITY. Slab City, or The Slabs, is a free campsite and alternative living community located near an active bombing range in the desert city of Niland, California. Previously an old WWII base, Marine barracks Camp Dunlap, the campsite earns its name for the concrete slabs that remained long after the military base had been bulldozed and abandoned. The permanent residents, also known as “slabbers,” most often end up in Slab City due to poverty (many are said to subsist off government checks), though some also stay for the feeling of freedom that comes with living in an uncontrolled, off-grid area in the middle of the desert. With no electricity, fresh water, or sewage treatment, residents are forced to rely on solar panels and their own waste system. The residents share one communal shower, a concrete cistern that is fed by a hot spring 100 yards away. DAVID'S POSITION ON DECLARING TAZ's DURING DISASTERS. Dr. Perrodin notes that pseudo-TAZ's manifested when non-profit rescue organizations, such as Cajun Navy Relief, efficiently integrated into rapidly-scaling rescue forces following Hurricanes Irma & Harvey. Unfortunately, government emergency operations centers' orders sidelined these same types of non-profits a year later from participating in the Hurricane Florence rescue. David argues that a national decree of “TAZ Immunity” should be issued during times of immense national distress. CHINA'S SOCIAL CREDIT SCORES. Dr. Perrodin closes this show with a primer discussion about China's individual social credit scores that will be assigned to every citizen in 2020. “Low” scores can result in people being denied plane tickets or even having Internet speeds slowed.
