But making mistakes is part of the process. The speaker shares that their journey began with the fear of saying the wrong thing—but instead of holding back, that fear became a catalyst to take action. The message is clear: young people aren't expecting perfection; they're looking for honesty, effort, and growth. The worst mistake is doing nothing at all. Now more than ever, we need to create safe spaces for youth to talk openly about the world around them, especially on topics once considered taboo. If we don't start these crucial conversations now, we risk missing the chance entirely. While I recognize that volunteering is a privilege not everyone can afford, it became a powerful investment in my professional development and helped me build a strong, supportive network.I want to encourage camp professionals—especially those who are newer to the field—not to hesitate in reaching out to your state, provincial, or national associations. It's easy to feel like your camp is “too small” or your question “too basic,” but these organizations are here for you—not just in crisis, but for learning, guidance, and everyday questions.Whether you're worried about finances, curious about emerging health concerns, or simply feeling unsure, your association is a resource. Think of it like a staff member coming to you for help—it's not a burden, it's an opportunity for meaningful support and growth. Associations welcome those conversations with the same enthusiasm. You don't have to navigate challenges alone. Reach out. Ask questions. Build connections. They discuss strategies such as creating a list of desired skills, celebrating mistakes, offering campers choices, and setting examples through staff behavior. The episode also covers how to build leadership skills through specific activities, mentorship programs, and encouraging reflection. Additionally, Gabrielle and Beth share practical tips, including using creative group projects and peer leadership opportunities, to foster these essential skills in campers. We hope you love this episode of Camp Code! If you do, please consider subscribing to the show, and leaving us a rating in your Podcast app. It's SO easy, just head to https://ratethispodcast.com/campcode-Best Practice for Leadership TrainingFrom BethOne of the most effective—and fun—ways to develop leadership skills in campers is through creative group projects. These hands-on initiatives empower older campers to take ownership, plan, and execute something meaningful as a team. Whether it's organizing a talent show, producing a camp newsletter, creating a mural, or launching an environmental campaign, these projects naturally build key leadership traits: communication, teamwork, problem-solving, initiative, and resilience. The process begins with choosing a project that requires collaboration and creativity. Campers can take on defined leadership roles—like project manager or creative director—to practice delegation and decision-making. Before kicking things off, short workshops can help teach skills like conflict resolution and effective communication.Staff play a supportive role, checking in regularly while allowing campers to take the lead. The project culminates in a final presentation, where participants can reflect on what they've learned and the roles they thrived in. These debriefs are essential for reinforcing lessons in leadership and self-awareness.This approach turns leadership training into something campers genuinely look forward to. It blends responsibility with creativity, gives them a chance to shine, and fosters confidence by letting them learn from both their successes and mistakes. When campers get to lead a meaningful project, they walk away with real-world leadership experience—and great camp memories to match.-Your Hosts:Beth Allison, Camp Consultant - Go Camp ProGabrielle Raill, Camp Director - Camp Ouareau-Thanks to our sponsors…BowlineHQCamp Leaders: Win back your time to what matters most, your campers. Joining the conversation is Travis Allison, co-founder of GoCamp.pro, who shares valuable insights on managing staff communication, engaging with parents, and teaching campers about responsible technology use. This episode emphasizes the importance of using emails over social media, creating comprehensive resources like a parent hub, and leveraging AI for better communication. Too often, directors and leadership staff take on tasks that seem necessary or cost-effective in the moment but, in reality, pull them away from higher-impact work. Whether it's managing social media, designing a website, plowing snow, or covering lifeguard shifts, these tasks may feel productive—but are they really the best use of your time?A simple way to assess this is by determining how much your time costs the organization. When you break down your salary into an hourly rate, you start to see your work through a different lens. That perspective can be a game-changer when deciding where to focus your efforts. If you wouldn't pay someone that hourly rate to complete a low-return task, why should the camp pay for your time to do it?By recognizing the true value of your time, you can make more informed decisions about what to take on and what to delegate. It's not just about working harder—it's about working smarter to ensure your efforts bring the greatest benefit to your camp and its mission.Resource:Click the link to access the GoCamp.Pro USELetter Special Guest:Travis Allison, Co-Founder - Go Camp Pro-Your Hosts:Beth Allison, Camp Consultant - Go Camp ProGabrielle Raill, Camp Director - Camp Ouareau-Thanks to our sponsors…BowlineHQCamp Leaders: Win back your time to what matters most, your campers. A simple but game-changing investment is a portable battery pack jumperthat allows staff to restart a vehicle without needing another car.Technology has advanced significantly, and these compact, easy-to-use devices can be a lifesaver when a vehicle's battery dies unexpectedly; whether from a forgotten interior light or other minor issues. Some even come with built-in air compressors for inflating tires. For camps that rely on transportation, having these tools in every camp vehicle ensures quick solutions, reduces stress, and keeps staff and campers safe. This past summer, I had the opportunity to drive buses for a summer camp and had done those over a few occasions throughout the summer. And just a couple weeks ago I got a thank you note from them hand written to thank me for my time. Even though this was a paid gig, the fact that they took the time to physically write that note with pen and paper really meant a lot and makes me want to do that type of gig again. If you do, please consider subscribing to the show, and leaving us a rating in your Podcast app. It's SO easy, just head to https://ratethispodcast.com/campcode-Best Practice for Leadership TrainingFrom Travis Thank you so much. I have two main points. The first is about a structured communication format that I've been developing to enhance how we approach sending out information. It emphasizes understanding what motivates parents, staff, rental group contacts, and other stakeholders to *open*, *read*, *absorb*, *act on*, and *share* the messages they receive. This structure can simplify communication, whether for big changes or small updates. One of the key changes I hope we make is to be intentional in our communication. By using the "open, read, absorb, act, and share" framework, we can break down complex messages into manageable parts. This approach makes it easier to both plan and measure the impact of our communications. The second point relates to organizing tasks, particularly for those of us with ADHD, where breaking down projects into steps is critical. It's common in roles like emergency services and camp management to find people who thrive in fast-paced settings but may struggle with complex planning due to ADHD. I recommend a tool called Goblin Tools. If you're taking on a large or daunting project, this tool allows you to enter the project title or key concept, and it automatically breaks it down into actionable steps. This not only makes tasks less overwhelming but also helps in delegating or prioritizing effectively. Sometimes, the simple act of breaking down a complex task can be the key to making real progress. -Special Guest: Travis Allison, Co-Founder of GoCamp.Pro - Go Camp Pro-Your Hosts:Beth Allison, Camp Consultant - Go Camp ProRuby Compton, Chief Exploration Officer - Ruby OutdoorsGabrielle Raill, Camp Director - Camp Ouareau-Thanks to our sponsors…UltraCampImagine camp registration software that actually gives you MORE time for what you love - CAMP! Over the years, I've discovered a simple yet effective strategy: stockpile these items discreetly.Every summer, I buy double the sharpies and tape we need and stash them away in my bedroom— a place where no one goes. When staff members are in a pinch, I can easily provide them with what they need, creating a small but meaningful moment of relief. While we do have garbage bags, they often require negotiating with the kitchen staff, and they run out quickly. By keeping a stash of these essentials, I ensure that my team feels supported. This little gesture not only helps in the moment but also builds goodwill among the staff. So, if you're looking for a way to boost morale and keep your camp running smoothly, consider having a secret stash of essential supplies. -Your Hosts:Beth Allison, Camp Consultant - Go Camp ProRuby Compton, Chief Exploration Officer - Ruby OutdoorsGabrielle Raill, Camp Director - Camp Ouareau-Thanks to our sponsors…UltraCampImagine camp registration software that actually gives you MORE time for what you love - CAMP! The exercise is called Stop, Start, Continue and I think it's great for this time of year, but I would also take it away for next summer to share with staff and have them do it several times throughout the summer. First, take a moment to think about what you need to STOP doing; what is that thing you're doing that's creating issues or stress or you know personal problems for yourself or your staff? What do you need to START doing? What is something that would help you make you feel better, help you deal better with communication with your staff, whatever it is, just start doing it. Third, what is something you CONTINUE with? This could be your process in your business or people you work with, marketing activities, training, sessions or programs. I love the simplicity of it stop start continue and now that you've taken the time to ask yourself some questions and get a clear picture of how things have been working, how you're feeling and what needs to change; moving forward it's the perfect opportunity to set yourself some new goals for the year ahead-Your Hosts:Beth Allison, Camp Consultant - Go Camp ProRuby Compton, Chief Exploration Officer - Ruby OutdoorsGabrielle Raill, Camp Director - Camp Ouareau-Thanks to our sponsors…UltraCampImagine camp registration software that actually gives you MORE time for what you love - CAMP! Previously, staff needed cell phones for music and photos, which created confusion about who could use personal phones. To solve this, we bought five second hand Android phones with fluorescent orange cases, easily identifiable as camp property, and set up a sign-out system for staff use during programs. They also got a Spotify account for music. Key staff, like directors, put orange tape on their personal phones to distinguish them as official. This reduced unauthorized phone use significantly compared to the previous year.-Your Hosts:Beth Allison, Camp Consultant - Go Camp ProRuby Compton, Chief Exploration Officer - Ruby OutdoorsGabrielle Raill, Camp Director - Camp Ouareau-Thanks to our sponsors…UltraCampImagine camp registration software that actually gives you MORE time for what you love - CAMP! I love the shore. Especially in the Autumn. I've spent many vacation hours on Nantucket and in Stonington, Connecticut. After Columbus Day, the rates are lower, and most of the tee shirt shops and the fancy restaurants are closed for the season. You feel you have the town to yourself.
