Bass Brindley Sherratt is tackling the role of Hagen in Götterdämmerung, and he explains how memory, text and costume are just some of the challenges he grapples with.Wagner wrote some stunning brass parts, and trombonist Dave Whitehouse explains the novelty of playing the bass trumpet in Götterdämmerung, and violinist Fiona Higham explains how to crack the string player's code when tackling Wagner's music. Synopsis It was Mozart who wrote the first great piano concertos, with Beethoven, Brahms and others following suit in the 19th century. Closer to our own time, the tradition continues, with new contributions appearing each year. On today's date in 1986, it was the turn of American composer, Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, when her new piano concerto received its premiere by the Detroit Symphony with Marc-Andre Hamelin the soloist. “My piano concerto does not cast the pianist as the prototypical 19th-century hero battling the orchestral forces and triumphing through overwhelming virtuosity,” said Zwilich at the time. “My concerto calls for a blending of forces – a joint exploration of the piano soloist and orchestra. The pianist is even asked to merge with various sections of the rather large orchestra at times.” “To me,” continued Zwilich, “a part of the nobility of the piano is that it can change its color, chameleon-like without losing its special identity … One composer treats the piano as a percussion instrument, another as a singer… Certainly the vast and wonderful piano repertoire explores this remarkable range. And the world of composer-pianists is large enough to embrace Serge Rachmaninoff and Art Tatum.” Music Played in Today's Program Ellen Taaffe Zwilich (b. 1939) Piano Concerto Joseph Kalichstein, piano; Florida State Orchestra; Michael Stern, Koch 7537 On This Day Births 1747 - Bohemian composer Leopold Kozeluh, (Kotzeluch) in Welwearn; He was the cousin of Johann (Jan) Antonín Kozeluh, who was also a composer; 1928 - American composer Jacob Druckman, in Philadelphia; Premieres 1870 - Wagner: opera "Die Walküre" (The Valkyrie), in Munich at the Hoftheater, with Franz Wüllner conducting; The opera was performed at the Bavarian King Ludwig II's request, but against the composer's wishes; 1912 - Mahler: Symphony No. 9, by Vienna Philharmonic, Bruno Walter conducting; 1986 - Zwilich: Piano Concerto, by the Detroit Symphony with Günther Herbig conducting and soloist Marc-André Hamelin; 2000 - Robert Kapilow: "DC Monuments," by the National Symphony; Others 1788 - Mozart finishes his Symphony No. 39 in E-flat, K.543 in Vienna.

Synopsis The fact that a new opera might debut at the Salzburg Festival in Austria is not in itself an unusual occurrence. But in August of the year 2000, the new opera in question was "L'Amour de Loin" or "Distant Love" by the Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho – making it the first opera by a female composer ever to be staged at the prestigious international Festival, and one that opened to rave reviews. Born in Helsinki in 1952, Saariaho now lives with her husband and children in Paris. She has said that though she loves Helsinki, she's more comfortable in a city where she is not a celebrity. "I'm too well recognized in Finland," says Saariaho. "When I say this to colleagues in America, they think it's fantastic that there is a country where contemporary music composers can be esteemed public personalities." Speaking of summer-time opera premieres, Richard Wagner's "Die Walküre" had its first performance as part of his "Ring Cycle" on today's date in 1876, at Wagner's own theater in Bayreuth, a small town in Southern Germany. Some early critics thought building a big theater in such an out-of-the-way place was a monumental act of folly, but Wagnerites have been making the midsummer pilgrimage there for over 125 years – despite the lack of air-conditioning in Wagner's theater. Appropriately, it's some of the warmest music from "Die Walküre" – the "Magic Fire" scene that brings the opera to its close. Music Played in Today's Program Kaija Saariaho (b. 1952) –…à la fumée (Petri Alanko, f; Anssi Karttunen, vcl; Los Angeles Philharmonic; Esa-Pekka Salonen, cond.) Synopsis When the United States entered World War I, American animosity against all things German resulted in a ban on German symphonic music and operas. During the Second World War however, musically-speaking, things were VERY different. With America at war with Germany and Italy, music by Wagner and Verdi, for example, continued to be performed in our concert halls and opera houses. In fact, just as the Nazis tried to appropriate German classical music for their propaganda purposes, the Allies adopted the opening notes of Beethoven's Fifth as a Morse Code "V" for Victory motive, and in OUR wartime propaganda, Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries," accompanied images of Allied bombers racing through the clouds to strike German cities. On May 25, 1944, the combined orchestras of the New York Philharmonic and the NBC Symphony presented a Red Cross Benefit concert at Madison Square Garden, with Arturo Toscanini conducting. The first half of the program was all-Wagner, the second half, all-Verdi. During the intermission, New York mayor Fiorello La Guardia auctioned off maestro Toscanini's baton. As a grand finale, after the German and Italian music, Toscanini closed with a rousing all-American encore—his own arrangement of John Philip Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever." So, as Walter Cronkite would put it: "That's the way it was, May 25, 1944." Opera as an art form requires our imagination. Whether we be entering into the world of Die Walküre, The Cunning Little Vixen or Tosca, each opera asks us to leave behind the every day and suspend our belief. Why is it, then, that singers often face visual discrimination? Time and again singers in auditions, rehearsals and even performances are criticised for their size, their age, and their 'beauty'. This week Alex and Helen talk about image in the operatic industry. They discuss size, age and beauty in opera; asking the industry to do better but also highlighting companies and artists (such as Jamie Barton with the Lyric Opera of Chicago) who are championing body positivity and bucking this unfortunate trend. They note how most often the female leads face the greatest discrimination and they wish to remind the industry that ultimately, the voice is what matters. They close the episode with a short discussion on race in relation to image in the industry. Contradicting their previous discussion, they argue that on the topic of race, we are not in a position to suspend belief. Given the power imbalance which exists for countless underrepresented voices in the operatic industry, roles written for people of colour should, in every case, be performed by people of colour and they stress the need to continue diversifying the art form. In this episode, Laverne introduces us to her opera singing teacher of 25 years, the celebrated opera lecturer, Metropolitan Opera Broadcast co-host and retired diva, Ira Siff. Ira is the creator of La Gran Scena, the all-male cross-dressed opera troupe that performed internationally for over 20 years to much critical acclaim with a cult-like following. Ira was the prima donna of La Gran Scena as his diva alter ego, Madame Vera Galupe-Borszkh. Vera was an amalgamation of the most famous opera stars of the 20th century. As Vera, Ira toed the line between spoof and adoring tribute with a thoughtfulness that earned La Gran Scena the praise and patronage of the very same opera stars Scena lovingly spoofed. Known for his lectures and the approachable manner in which he talks about opera, Ira breaks down opera history while telling stories of growing up as an “opera queen” in New York, and the insane fandom of diva worship. // Glossary of Opera Terminology: Aria: A self-contained piece for a singer, or “solo.” In opera, arias mostly appear during a pause in dramatic action when a character is reflecting on their emotions. //  Bel Canto: An Italian vocal technique or “school” developed and popularized in the 18th and 19th centuries. It places emphasis on beauty of sound and brilliance of performance rather than dramatic expression and romantic emotion. //  Coloratura: Elaborate ornamentation of a vocal melody, especially in operatic singing by a soprano. //  Falsetto: A method of singing used by male singers, especially tenors, to sing notes higher than their normal range. //  Forte: A musical direction that means “loud.” //  Legato: (adj.) You are entering a realm of gods, dwarves, giants, horses, money, contracts, and dogs. In this episode, we meet Siegmund (Bryan the Mensah). On the run from his enemies, he seeks shelter in a house in the woods. There he meets Sieglinde . He does not immediately recognize her as his long-lost twin sister, but the two feel an instant emotional connection. Previously on The RingNeed a quick recap of the events of Das Rheingold, the first installment of the Ring? We've got you. Supreme god Wotan has hired two giants to build a castle for him in the sky, Walhalla. But when they come to collect their pay, Wotan has nothing to pay them with and the giants take his wife's sister, the goddess Freia, whom he has offered as collateral. Wotan then travels to the Nibelheim, where the Nibelung Alberich has stashed a large amount of gold stolen from the Rhine, as well as a magical ring he has forged from it. Wotan steals the gold, including the ring, and hopes to pay off the giants with just the gold. They also demand the ring, and Wotan reluctantly hands it to them. Then Erda, mother Earth herself, makes an appearance to warn Wotan that the end is near. Slightly confused, the company of gods crosses the rainbow bridge into Walhalla. Between the events of Das Rheingold and Die Walküre, some years have passed and Wotan, the supreme god, has had some time to decide on strategy. His chosen route? Procreation. Apart from nine divine Valkyries born of his affair with Erda, he has fathered twins with a mortal woman to whom he called himself Wolf. From his mortal offspring, Wotan hopes a hero will arise who, unencumbered by the treaties that bind the god himself, will obtain the ring for him. These mortal siblings, Siegmund and Sieglinde, have grown up separately and completely unaware of each other. And that is where we start off… Soft ValkyriePresented and commissioned by Holland Festival in collaboration with Staatsoper Hannover and Dutch National Opera.
