The Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 68, is a symphony written by Johannes Brahms. Brahms spent at least fourteen years completing this work, whose sketches date from 1854. Brahms himself declared that the symphony, from sketches to finishing touches, took 21 years, from 1855 to 1876. The premiere of this symphony, conducted by the composer's friend Felix Otto Dessoff, occurred on 4 November 1876, in Karlsruhe, then in the Grand Duchy of Baden. A typical performance lasts between 45 and 50 minutes.

Sticky Notes: The Classical Music Podcast

Brahms was only 20 years old when Robert Schumann wrote his famous Neue Bahnen(New Paths) article that proclaimed Brahms as the future of music and the heir of Beethoven. Beethoven had only been dead for 26 years at this point, and his shadow still loomed large over every single composer living in Germany, and beyond. Brahms knew that the most concrete way he would be compared with Beethoven would be through a symphony, and so…he studiously avoided writing one. It's not like he didn't try. Brahms began sketching symphonies only one year after the Neue Bahnen article, but he kept revising the sketches, or more often, burning them as inferior products. This would go on for 23 more years, until 1876. Brahms was 43 when he finally completed his first symphony, and it was worth the wait. What Brahms came up with would inspire symphonists to this day, and would carry on the tradition that Beethoven laid out with both a respectful and loving look back into the past, with a clear eye forwards into the future. Today we'll dissect this piece in detail, taking it down to its foundational elements in order to see how Brahms created this masterpiece of a first symphony. Join us!

How do you see Brahms Symphony No. 4? For Scottish orchestral bassist and abstract painter Kirsty Matheson, music—like days of the week— have color. Kirsty shares how she balances her professional music life with her painting career that took flight during a 100 Day project in 2021. This fascinating conversation allows us to dip into synesthesia, a neurological condition shared by Kirsty and many other creative minds that creates a crossover between senses, in Kirsty's case allowing her to paint classical music.  Find Kirsty: Kirsty's Website: www.kirstymatheson.com Kirsty's Instagram: @kirsty_matheson_art   Kirsty's Twitter: @KirstyM_Art    Mentioned:Justin Mortimer | artist  (learn)Esperanza Spalding | American bassist, singer and composer (listen) Ju-Fang Liu | Principal Bass, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra (learn) Kristen Bruya | Principal Bass, Minnesota Orchestra (learn) Aspen Music Festival (explore) Dido and Aeneas Overture , Henry Purcell (listen) John Butt |University of Glasgow | Director, Dunedin Consort (listen) Kirsty's 100 Day Project (explore) BBC3 Tom Service Interview, Music in the Moment, May 31, 2021 (listen) Maggie Hambling | British painter and sculptor (learn) Synesthesia | neurological condition involving an overlap of senses (learn) Famous synaesthetes, BBC article  (learn) Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) | Russian painter (learn) Mozart, Symphony No. 40 in G Minor (listen) Fanny Mendelssohn (1805 –1847) | composer (listen) Seonaid Aitken | Scottish jazz violinist (listen) BBCThe Afternoon Show Podcast | Kirsty's review  movie Tár (listen)  BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra (learn)Find Me, Kristy Darnell Battani:Website:    https://www.kristybattani.comInstagram:  kristybattaniartSupport the show

Sticky Notes: The Classical Music Podcast

Welcome to Season 9 of Sticky Notes! We're starting with a bang this season with Brahms' incomparable 4th symphony. This symphony takes the listener on a journey that unexpectedly ends in a legendarily dramatic and stormy way. What would compel a composer like Brahms to write an ending like this? Was it a requiem for his place in music? For Vienna? For Europe? Or was it the logical conclusion to a minor key bassline he stole from a Bach Cantata? This is the eternal question when it comes to Brahms - logic or emotion? Well, usually the answer is a bit of both, and today we're going to go through this remarkable piece with all of this in mind. Synopsis The REAL story behind Richard Strauss' decision to use a chamber orchestra for his opera “Ariadne on Naxos” – which premiered in Stuttgart on today's date in 1912 – is complicated and a little mundane. We prefer a more “colorful” version that some in Stuttgart have proffered. When a new opera house was being planned for that city, Strauss was asked how large the orchestral pit should be. “Oh, it should hold about 100 players,” he suggested. So, to determine the size required, the architects rather naively asked the local military band to assemble 100 players, have them stand at attention, and measured the amount of space they occupied. Now, soldiers standing at attention take up a LOT less space than an equal number of seated symphonic musicians. And so, the resulting space in the new theater could only accommodate a CHAMBER orchestra. The Stuttgart Opera also wanted to launch their new theater with a brand-new opera commissioned from Strauss. When he learned what had happened, being the eminently practical sort he was, simply wrote his new opera for chamber ensemble of about 40 players. Fact or fantasy, that's how some like to tell it in Stuttgart. Music Played in Today's Program Richard Strauss (1861 – 1949) — Ariadne auf Naxos (Vienna Philharmonic; James Levine, cond.) Sticky Notes: The Classical Music Podcast

Brahms spent much of his life battling with his ambition to write great symphonies and his terror at the spectre of Beethoven looming over him. His first symphony was a success, and with immense relief, Brahms quickly turned out a second symphony in just 4 months, a bit less than the 14 tortured years it took him to craft the first. At first glance this symphony sounds pastoral and idyllic, but there are plenty of clouds in this seminal masterpiece, something we'll discuss throughout the show. Join us!

Johannes BrahmsJohannes Brahms was a German composer, pianist, and conductor of the Romantic period. Born in Hamburg into a Lutheran family, he spent much of his professional life in Vienna. Scott Hambrick, founder of onlinegreatbooks.com, Karl Schudt, and Michelle Hawkins launch this podcast at the only suitable place to start— with a melody.  Before tuning in to the podcast, go listen to Brahms' Symphony No. 3.  Michelle says, "This particular melody is not repetitive, it takes you on a journey that makes sense. It’s an unfolding of his thought process." Scott adds, "The thought process of the genius is more accessible when it’s music than reading what they’ve written."  In listening to Brahms' musical journey, the trio asks questions like: What is melody? Are you able to talk about sound without metaphor? Can music itself just be its own end? If you have grown up on pop music, you may have not been exposed to these melodic sentences. This is a chance to expand your exposure and what you can delight in. Why would you not want to have more things that are beautiful in your life?

Sticky Notes: The Classical Music Podcast

Brahms' 3rd symphony is his most underrated symphony. It is a nearly perfect piece that transcends the traditional symphonic narrative over its 40 minute journey. So why doesn't it get performed as often as the other 3 symphonies? This week we dissect the symphonies' origins(hint: it has something to do with Clara Schumann), it's unique cyclical structure, and the motto that runs through the entire work. There are few symphonic hikes more satisfying than Brahms' 3rd symphony, so let's start up together!

Sticky Notes: The Classical Music Podcast

This week we take a look at a symphony that has been called both "sunny and bucolic" and "tragic and full of shadow." What accounts for these differences of opinions about such a beloved symphony? We'll explore all of the emotional ambiguity that runs throughout this symphony, as well as Brahms' remarkable thematic cohesion and creativity. How does a composer take 3 notes and create an entire symphony out of them? This week, you'll find out how. Recording recommendation: Carlos Kleiber w/ Vienna Phil.

Today we will hear from these artists demonstrating SYMPHONIC ROCK: 1 The Moody Blues and Days of Future Passed with the London Festival Orchestra 2 Rick Wakeman's rendition of "Cans and Brahms" the group Yes 3 "Your Time is Gonna Come" Led Zepplin 4 "I'm Free", from Tommy, as performed by the London Symphony Orchestra and Chambre Choir with Roger Daltry 5 "Cleetus Awreetus- AwrightUs"  Frank Zappa, and Grand Wazoo featuring a cast of characters…From the Grand Wazoo album 6 "I Remember Me", From the Like Children (Jan Hammer and Jerry Goodman) album M1 "The Day Begins" From the "Days  of Future Passed" album, the Moody Blues, with the London Festival Orchestra, conducted by Peter Knight. This song is side one track one of the vinyl LP. This album paints the picture of everyman's day, starting with The Day Begins, Dawn, The Morning, Lunch break, the Afternoon, Evening and the Night. One day of a man's life, on 7 tracks, on vinyl LP ! The seven tracks on Days of Future Passed spawned two hit singles: "Tuesday Afternoon"  and "Nights in White Satin" which hit No. 2… five years after the LP's original release!. The lyrics from Days  of Future Passed are true to the band's name, moody and blue  …such as this: "Cold hearted orb that rules the night, removes the colours from our sight, red is grey and yellow white. But we decide which is right. And which is an illusion?" One description of this fusion of pop and poetry and the classics is taken from album's liner notes, written by Hugh Mendl, the executive producer… he writes  …Moody Blues is "extending the range of pop music… and has found a point where it becomes one with the classics"… "Days  of Future Passed" was Produced in 1967 by Decca Record Company Ltd., using the then-state of the art DERAM sound system. The DERAM or so-called DERAMIC Sound System was an early stereo "all round sound" technique, that allowed more space between instruments. How was this achieved? This capability came from the use of, not just one four-track recording machine, but TWO four-track recording machines. Imagine - eight discrete recorded tracks. Before this, stereo was recorded from one four-track tape recorder. The doubling of recorded tracks provided the ability to put more sound "space" or "spacial realism" between performers on up to 8 recorded tracks, creating more of a soundscape when played on a "stereo", high fidelity sound system, and when you placed yourself between the two speakers. This was 1967 -- the early days of consumer audio. If you had "good" component stereo system, you must have been an audiophile, as those early component systems were very expensive indeed! A good component system included a stereo amplifier, stereo preamp, the reel-to-reel tape deck, a "good" LP turntable, tonearm, massive speakers too… This album credits the orchestral parts to "Redwave/Knight".  Well, "Knight" was conductor Peter Knight, while "Redwave" was an imaginary name representing the Moody Blues themselves. Knight built the orchestral parts around themes written by Hayward, Thomas, Pinder & Lodge, the Moody Blues.   M2 Full: Cans and Brahms  YES and their 1972 album "Fragile", Atlantic Recording Corp, . Beethoven’s first symphony premiered when he was 30. Schubert wrote his first at 16, and Mozart’s was composed when he was only 8. But Johannes Brahms, at 43, had yet to finish his Symphony No. 1, which he’d begun writing more than twenty years previously. A notorious perfectionist, he burned many of his early works and sketches; it was not easy living in the shadow of the giants before him. His many years of preparation were worth it—upon the work’s premiere in 1876, the Vienna press called it “Beethoven’s Tenth.”

This is a “best of” episode from three classic Contrabass Conversations episodes. Back in the early days of the podcast, John Grillo and I recorded two episodes that dissected various excerpts. He and I talked through each excerpt and then played a recording of John performing it. These have been extremely popular resources over the years, but they came out not he podcast ten years ago. With so many episodes of this podcast and so many new listeners to the show, bringing these classic offerings to light is important to me, so I’m planning on doing a few rebroadcasts of this cornerstone content every now and again. This week's Contrabass Conversations episode features an in-depth analysis of the double bass orchestral excerpts most commonly requested at auditions.  Double bassist (and regular Contrabass Conversations guest and ho-host) John Grillo discusses each of these excerpts--stylistic considerations, differences in articulation and bow strokes, and suggestions for effectively learning them--and then performs them.  I believe that this project will be a highly valuable resource for bassists worldwide, and I'd love your feedback on this project!
