So I'm going to guess you've noticed that we've been talking a lot about writing and content creation here on the podcast lately. So it's the perfect time to bring back this episode with Emily Grace. If you are a writer and an actor and you're trying to propel your career forward with content that you're creating on your own, there are a lot of traps that you can fall into where you waste time, energy and money with making stuff that won't actually propel your career forward. So this replay is a cautionary tale… I'm just gonna come out and say it, – DO NOT WRITE YOUR OWN CONTENT… Well, not until you listen to this episode! Because even though you've got the best of intentions, chances are you'll make a rookie mistake: You won't write the right character to showcase you & your talents. I hear you thinking: "Ummmmm, excuse me, Brian! I know a thing or two about scripts, I'm an actor, I look at them all day." That right there is the very reason you'll make this mistake. Today's guest Emily Grace walks us through creating content from the lightbulb moment to breaking the process down into small, actionable steps. No, like for real... She really realllllllly breaks it down so that it doesn't feel overwhelming! Plus she teaches us a reliable, failsafe hack to ensure you write stories that actually highlight your talent and attract the right attention in the bizniz. Oh, and we breakdown the entire plot of one of my favorite movies – The Devil Wears Prada. Emily Grace is an expert at helping actors get their damn scripts done. It takes courage to put yourself out there and today's guest helps actors create their own projects. Tune in to learn: The BIG mistakes actors make when it comes to writing TRUTH TIME: Just because you are good at breaking down a script doesn't mean that you are good at writing a character fit for you How storytelling is a catalyst for change Thank you for tuning in to this episode of Brian Breaks Character! Today's guests are the epitome of what this podcast is all about: CREATIVE REVOLUTIONARY SUPERSTARS… who are just as hard on themselves as the rest of us! CJ Baran & Benjamin Romans created the show CAGES – an indescribable “genre-busting game changer” (LA Times) that left audiences in awe at its premiere… MYSELF INCLUDED! Masterfully weaving state-of-the-art video and animation with live performance and original songs that pulse with an addictive pop energy, CAGES pulls out all the stops to conjure a rock opera musical for the modern age. These two creative overachievers wrote the story, the music, directed, and choreographed the piece – CJ even played the lead! And just like any creative expression, the show started as an itty-bitty baby idea that paid off big time when they decided they would never settle for less than the art they want to see. ← not easy when you are creating a dystopian, B&W gothic world in a live, stage performance! When I invited CJ to the show, he wrote: My entire life has been living in the void between creating art that I believe will move people while also trying to make a living at it. ← perhaps the most Brian Breaks Character thing anyone has ever said! I couldn't be more delighted to share this episode with you: I just know you'll love hearing from these two fiercely committed, honest, and authentic artists who make FUTURE THEATRE. Brian Patacca helps creatives get what they want without suffering. 20,000 creative people get Brian's newsletter delivered to their inboxes every single week – and when they're not reading along, they're listening to his podcast, Brian Breaks Character. The podcast ranks among the top 1% of most listened to podcasts in the world with 5,000 downloads every month and 270+ 5-star reviews. Brian is the CEO of Team BKP and for the past two decades he's been helping creatives get what they want without all the suffering. His sweet spot is helping people who proudly walk the path LEAST taken with down-&-dirty marketing and branding advice, all while spilling the tea on how to bring home the bacon (or seitan… He does live in LA after all). But his secret superpower is his spiritual and grounding approach to the bizniz rooted in his training as a non-denominational reverend (read: Universe, God, Buddha, et al). He proves that when you follow your purpose instead of playing by a tired set of industry rules (read: limiting beliefs), you can skip the drama, generate momentum, and build excitement around who you are and what you love to do the most-est. Not only does he promise the how-to's, he has zero doubt that creativity is your divine birthright. For links and a transcript visit https://dianefoy.com/088
Today's episode is very different and I think you are going to really resonate with it. This is a special 2-part episode where I invited some of my Brian Breaks Character Super Fans to a live coaching call with me. And… We talk about alllll the things. We don't always get the chance to have a call like this because many times our group coaching calls are about the curriculum inside one of my courses. But today, there are questions from actors as well as creatives, and some questions are even more spiritually based. We really get into it and you get a real front-row seat on a coaching as we dig deep into questions about putting yourself out there, creating content, the feelings that come up around when you are starting a family, and so much more. You just gotta listen to both episodes. Takeaways from Part One: Knowing when you need to take a REAL break and when you need to be back in acting class where you play in a sandbox without judgment The difference between a choice and a dilemma How to figure out what wardrobe to choose for your next headshot session Grab a notebook because there are tons of juicy takeaways in this conversation. Happy Thanksgiving! Today, as you enjoy your tofurkey, quinoa stuffing, and organic cranberry sauce, I want you to know how thankful I am for you. And.. I am dropping a replay of an episode because it is full of gratitude. It's a new way for you to think about how to reach out to people and say thank you and there's no better day for me to share this with you, again, then on Thanksgiving. Lemme ask you… When's the last time you wrote a thank you email? Or a card? Or a text? Did the words flow freely from your fingertips? I mean we all SAY we're grateful, so why isn't it easy to send a thoughtful Thank You note?Look, I believe the world is a better place when we acknowledge the people who have helped us along the way, but too often gratitude ends up on the cutting room floor because we get lost in a flurry of “how do I say this,” “is it too late to send this?” or “does this make me sound needy?”… So… you never click send (...and the world is NOT a better place for it). If you resonate with anything I just said, you're welcome… because today's bonus episode is right up your gratitude alley. LISTEN TO LEARN: When to send a thank you When it's too late to send a thank you (hint-hint: the 4th of NEVERuary) Exactly what to say in your message Plus a TON of prompts so you can make these messages your own And I don't want you to miss a single step of this process, so you can download all the slides from the training by going to www.brianbreakscharacter.com/74 It's totally free… don't worry about sending me a thank you note. Unless you've been living in another galaxy, far, far away, you know that immersive entertainment is exploding… And this week's guest Mikhael Tara Garver is one of the pre-eminent thought leaders in immersive entertainment and original experiential performances. So if you want to make money doing your creative thing, you'll love this mind-blowing conversation about the new frontier of live performance. Mikhael's work has been seen in some fancy spaces! The Kennedy Center, The Goodman Theater, The United Nations, and Boston's Institute of Contemporary Art… and you might know her work as the director of The American Repertory Theater's production of Sleep No More. There is this term (that I did not come up with) called terminal uniqueness. And I'm curious if you can diagnose yourself with this. It is the belief that when you see someone else be successful or you see someone else succeeding or you hear about the way someone went about their career or a step that they took to get where they're going, you write against yourself. Like if that will work for them then it will never work for me or I am so different that it is impossible that path will work for me. Now this is not to discredit anything like systemic racism and lack of representation. I just want to make sure that we also don't bring our own additional trauma to this conversation where I am so different that it is impossible for me to find success in any of the ways that other people have found it before me. What I want to say to you is you are incredibly special and you're not special. And the reason why I say that is that when you make yourself special you start to exclude yourself from what might be in front of you. Why I bring this up today is because my guest is Migs Govea and he has a ton of credits behind him. It could be very easy to say to yourself whether you're an actor, photographer, director, butcher, baker or candlestick maker - Yes, well they have that much success so this is why it works for them. You're going to hear in Migs's story how he moved to a new city, suddenly decided he's going to stay there and then suddenly decided he's going to reach out and try to get representation there. It may sound a little like a Cinderella story, but you're going to hear him share how, much more intimately, there was a wrestle going on inside of him. You'll learn that it isn't as black and white as reps saying, “You've got a bunch going on already. I'm glad to meet with you.” That's the place where I want you to root yourself. Instead of making Migs so special that any of his success cannot also be yours, the invitation I make to you today is to find where in Migs's story the places you see yourself. And… Migs does not hold back. He is really vulnerable and honest with his experience. I just know that you're going to get that extra cuddle of intimacy where you can feel the same emotions that he experienced during the journey to find his great representation in Los Angeles. Here are just a few takeaways: There is never a perfect time to reach out to reps A target list is the worst strategy you can use to find the right match Let go of the things you cannot control and take ownership of the things that you can You are more than enough Let me run down some of his Migs super exciting credits: Currently he is recurring as Nick Vargas on the CBS series FBI: Most Wanted, he was on the Netflix series Inventing Anna opposite Julia Garner and then he also appeared opposite Julia Garner again in the Sundance hit The Assistant. He was on HBO's City on a Hill and NBC's Law & Order: SVU. His film credits include Motherless Brooklyn opposite Ed Norton and Ocean's 8 opposite Anne Hathaway. So he certainly has all those fancy exciting things going for him that he's worked really hard to accomplish. You're going to hear Migs talk about even with that kind of resume there's so much more story behind each of those credits than we might see on the outside. Anthony Meindl thinks a lot like me: creativity is your birthright, ignore it at your own – and the world's – peril. We both believe creativity is by no means monolithic, but the painter and the actor, the writer, and the photographer can suffer the same setbacks and upside-down thinking that might inspire an artist to think they are not important. Touché I say to the itty bitty sh*tty committee in our minds that try. I had a feeling that this guest was going to bring up all the feels and we would have an electric conversation together and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. If you're an actor, you know Anthony Meindl – his studio AMAW just celebrated 25 years and has locations in 9 cities around the world. And if you're a creative person (who isn't?) you might know him from one of his 5 best-selling books: At Left Brain Turn Right, Alphabet Soup For Grown-Ups, Book The F#©️king Job, You Knew When You Were 2…Or his newest book… Unstuck: A Life Manual On How To Be More Creative, Overcome Your Obstacles, And Get Shit Done. I read this book and it was like jaw drop after jaw drop because I felt like each chapter could have been its own all day meditation. We talk all about this and we get into some of the softer parts of what it means to be an actor. You know that I value vulnerability (Spoiler Alert: Anthony gets real vulnerable in this chat. I got a few Oprah moments!) by the conversations that we have around our spirituality that comes with creativity and our own calling towards that which we are meant to do while we are on the planet. I believe this conversation with Anthony will uplift and certainly inspire you. Here are just a few takeaways The Myth of Imposter Syndrome & How to Shut it Down How romance, creativity and money can get in the way and/or foster your own greatness Your impact is larger than what's in front of you Meditation will completely change how you see the world, how you see yourself and how you move through the world Thank you for tuning in to this episode of Brian Breaks Character! This week's guest on the pod is TV writer and author Robert King. His latest book No One Here Is Like Me dropped just two weeks ago and it is beautiful. Robert mixes memoir with social commentary in a storytelling style that makes you feel like you're talking to your best friend. You're going to hear us really get into not only his journey, his story and how he's sharing that story, but you'll learn about his creative process and how he came to create this book. Also, Robert is a creative through and through. He writes on the ABC's television show The Chase, which is a really incredible game show. He wrote for Leslie Jones on Supermarket Sweep and he was the co-head writer for Hulu's Up Early Tonight, a late night show for moms that was hosted by Abbi Crutchfield. So you know he has that comedy background, but our conversation tends a little bit more to his serious side as we really get into some of the social issues that he talks about in his book. Here are Just a few Juicy Takeaways Know your premise for the piece you are writing as this will guide you How Robert leads with with his personal voice in the writer's room The parenting advice he received from President Obama Thank you for tuning in to this episode of Brian Breaks Character! If you want to know a verifiable way to get more auditions, grab your notebook for Part Two of my interview with Blair Hickey and Brian Wold, the Co-Founders of CastingAbout and Consultants for Breakdown Services. I locked them in a Zoom room and forced them to tell me ALLLLLL THE INSIDER SECRETS of how actors can make themselves unforgettable on Actors Access… and there were just too many juicy takeaways for one episode. In this episode, we dive deeper into how to create and maintain those strong relationships with casting directors – especially now that those relationships are 90% online. HERE ARE THE TOP 3 INSIDER TAKEAWAYS We all know that "booking the room" is more important than booking the job, but B&B tell us exactly how to use this power to turn into repeat success Why you must tell YOUR story while also serving the story of the script – When you don't do this you leave auditions on the table and stay firmly planted in the callback-only zone Yes, technology has changed the way the industry works, but your job stays the same, so don't fall into the trap of distractions Brian Wold has over three decades of experience in public relations, marketing and business communications. Blair Hickey has been a working actor for almost 30 years (The Big Bang Theory, NCIS: LA, Heroes). Combining their skills and expertise, Blair and Brian created CastingAbout, the online casting and production guide for professional actors. In 2009, CastingAbout was acquired by Breakdown Services, where both continue to work as consultants. Thank you for tuning in to this episode of Brian Breaks Character! I'm gonna guess you have an Actors Access/Breakdown Express profile so Casting Directors can find you. And even though the site has *some* free functionality, I'm also gonna guess that you plunk down $68/year (plus any other fees) so you can host your video files and get access to the best auditions out there. YOU AND 1.3 MILLION OTHER ACTORS USE ACTORS ACCESS. I'm sharing that BIG number so you make it a priority to listen to this episode of Brian Breaks Character. Today's guests are Blair Hickey and Brian Wold, the Co-Founders of CastingAbout and Consultants for Breakdown Services… I locked them in a Zoom room and forced them to tell me ALLLLLL THE INSIDER SECRETS of how actors can make themselves unforgettable on Actors Access. And look, you may have heard from them before… but I'm gonna guess that was before ‘the panorama' and before 94% of your auditions were self-tapes. So this is brand-new intel that will actually move the dial on getting more auditions in the new normal. HERE ARE THE TOP 5 INSIDER TAKEAWAYS The latest developments regarding virtual auditions and online casting. The realities of how casting directors receive and review submissions (and why some STAND OUT more than others). How to avoid the most common mistakes actors (and sometimes agents) make when submitting. How to turn your online submissions into AUDITIONS. Strategies to create and maintain strong working relationships with the casting community even online. Have you ever wanted to get reps in London or Europe? Or just another dang city where you DON'T currently live? This week's episode of the Brian Breaks Character podcast is a MUST-LISTEN. Ditte Maria le-Fevre got her fair share of auditions in Denmark, but had a feeling there was more out there for her (sound familiar?). She was already doing all she could to get auditions on her home turf, so she courageously took the 4,100 mile leap and reached out to reps in the UK and she landed a FABULOUS manager. Ditte Maria is a graduate of my now infamous course #agentgoals and she gives that framework a lot of the credit, but SHE is the reason it worked. Here are the headlines from her 4K mile journey to bi-continental reps: It was HELLA easier than she thought it would be She presented her career in a way that reps in another city (and country!) can understand Reps were REALLY nice in their responses Doing the deep work to recognize your worth pays off in pounds £ (literally!) Oh, and one more thing: Ditte Maria is a joy to talk to – she is generous with her vulnerability; she doesn't leave out the stuff that held her; and tells us exactly how she was ultimately able to have the international career she always wanted. Run, Don't Walk to get the download that accompanies this episode: www.brianbreakscharacter.com/74 I believe the world is a better place when we acknowledge the people who have helped us along the way, but too often gratitude ends up on the cutting room floor because we get lost in a flurry of “how do I say this,” “is it too late to send this?” and “does this make me sound needy?” So… you never click send. If you resonate with anything I just said, THANK GOODNESS YOU'RE HERE!Today's episode is our Season One Finale and it is a little different because we're going to listen in on a bonus training we held not long ago inside my program, Actor Operating System called HOW TO SAY THANK YOU (without being weird). During this training, I walk you through: When to send a thank you When it's too late to send a thank you (hint-hint: it's never too late) Exactly what to say in your message Plus a TON of prompts so you can make these messages you own And… If you think I'm gonna tell you to apply a tired old template to every thank you write, you couldn't be more wrong. Gratitude at its best is vulnerable and specific… so of course it brings up ALLLL the feels. So consider this episode a masterclass in HOW TO SAY THANK YOU (without being weird). Oh! And I don't want you to miss a single step of this process, so you can download all the slides from the training at www.brianbreakscharacter.com/74 It's totally free… And I don't even expect you to send me a thank you note. (wink) Thank You from the bottom of my heart for listening and helping make Season One of the podcast a success! Oh! And… This may be the last episode of the season, but you can take this time to catch up on past episodes. See you in August! Thank you for tuning in to this episode of Brian Breaks Character! We at Team BKP are on a journey to create safe spaces for everyone in our community. Today's show is part 2 in a series where, with the help of anti-oppression business strategist & inclusive leadership coach Nadi Fantastic, we take stock of how we're doing. And at the center of this work is YOU; your feeling of safety in our spaces. The conversation across these 2 episodes is vulnerable, sticky, tough, and incredibly rewarding. As Nadi says, “This is slow work in urgent times.” Nope, we don't always hit the mark. Yup, we've got room to grow. Yay, the work is paying off. No matter how you identify, there's no way to listen to this episode without considering how you've been showing up as an artist and a creative. So we encourage you to listen with a critical ear and open heart; we welcome your feedback and we are deeply grateful for the privilege of being alongside you in the journey. As part of our anti-racism and anti-bias action plan, we offer scholarships in support of our BIPOC, Disabled, LGBTQIA+ and/or 62+ actors. Scholarship applications are open year-round and we encourage applicants to apply anytime they are considering one of our programs. Over here at Team BKP, we've been on an anti-racist and anti-bias journey since July of 2020. Inclusion and belonging are two of our company's core values and we are committed to foster diversity in our programs and create a safe space for all. But doing this means we have had to educate ourselves. Our team is primarily white and cisgender so that means we inherently do not have the lived experiences of actors and creatives that we welcome into our spaces. So, we are on this journey to do better… To become the leaders that we want to become Walk the walk Lead with our values Hold ourselves accountable With the help of anti-oppression business strategist and inclusive leadership coach, Nadi Fantastic, Team BKP, in this first episode of a two part series, starts the process of diving deep into our anti-racist commitment - we share where we fell short and where we thrived. In this episode, we publicly hold ourselves accountable by sharing our Accountability Report with the world. We talk about what comes up in our business and how we can do better. This includes: Learning how to do an accessibility check-in Using skin colored emojis Being transparent and vulnerable with our values I'm excited for you to listen as I know you will get a good sense of how you are showing up in your own life and for your anti-racist values as an artist and creative. Today's episode is meant to inspire you and remind you that your gifts and talents were given to you for a purpose. And today's guest, Michael McElroy is a prime example of someone who truly uses their gifts and talents for a greater purpose. You've probably heard of Michael as he has been on Broadway for many many years. He is a Tony, Drama Desk and Grammy Award nominee. He has also accepted a Tony Award Honor for Excellence in the Theater on behalf of Broadway Inspirational Voices, which by the way he founded. Broadway Inspirational Voices is this exceptional gospel choir that regardless of what religion, background or belief system you come from, these amazing Broadway performers will call you to remember that your life is sacred and that you are here for a reason. Michael is also one of the founding members of Black Theater United, an incredible nonprofit advocacy organization that as stated in their mission statement “stand together to help protect Black people, Black talent and Black lives of all shapes and orientations in theatre and communities across the country.” I just know Michael will inspire you and I encourage you to listen and be moved to use your gifts to take your own action. It seems like no matter how many times you take headshots (and I know you've done them more than you can count on one hand!) the same exact 3 questions come up: What 3-5 types do I need to cover? What should I wear? How can I make sure that my headshot pops? …Maybe you've also hemmed & hawed over what to wear for your self-tape auditions? Or maybe you wear the exact same thing every single time cuz it's the ONE thing you know looks good on you? Welllll…. This episode has you covered.Television, film, & personal wardrobe stylist, Adrien Rabago joined me on Brian Breaks Character to walk us through her process to nail your wardrobe in headshots, self-tapes, and on the red carpet. HERE ARE JUST A FEW OF THE INCREDIBLE TAKEAWAYS: Get your hands on the 5️ essential pieces every actor should have in their closet so you can shop with some sort of direction and quit overspending on one-off costume pieces. What pieces should you actually bring to a fitting? NOTE: This is only if you want the stylist to love you and make you look good on set! The #1 COLOR that gets people cast… did you even know that was a thing??? Me neither! Adrien spills so many gems in this episode it is basically an essential checklist for your next self-tape and headshot shoot (....and the one after that, and the one after that, etc). We are doing something a little different on this episode of Brian Breaks Character. Last summer, Lola Rufai of The Helping Actor invited me to her Breakthrough Actor Summit to talk about finding representation and specifically to share more about embodying the CEO when it comes to agent and manager meetings. Now, I don't know what kind of magic this woman weaved, but she got me to have a very different conversation around representation and it was just too juicy not to make into a podcast episode (of course I got her permission first). What I want you to listen for is not how to get a manager or agent. For that you can come to my FREE LIVE Masterclass. Listen to this episode to learn the stance you have to take in order to attract the yeses and the nos so that you can have freedom of choice when you're choosing that perfect representation. So not only are you not just getting any random manager and agent, but you are getting one that truly sees the value of what you have to offer as an artist and one who loves the uniqueness of you. Sounds like a dream, right? And if you already have representation… Don't stop listening to this episode! We also talk about how you can find your own value in the rep relationship you are in right now, cuz I know so often it can be tricky to have those conversations with your current representation when you're like: Am I getting enough auditions? Is there something else I can be doing? You know, we tend to fall back on those pretty lame questions. In this episode, I share the sophisticated questions to ask so that you can make sure you have that perfect match. And… I'm teaching the masterclass we talk about in this episode LIVE Tomorrow at 11am PT, Saturday, 4/2 and Monday, 4/4. Anyone else triggered by the word L A Z Y?WARNING: I am a megafan of Sam Valentine and in this reunion episode we get to the juicy stufffffffff! We're coming up on a year and Sam was my very first-est guest! In today's episode she shines a bright light on the journey of her legendary podcast One Broke Actress. Sam openly describes how she's re-defined productivity in her own life and career (and her double-career as a podcast host & editor!). Lazy WAS a trigger word for Sam – so she took steps to create a new schedule that supports her goals and focuses on what she really wants. Don't we alllllll want that????We talk about the importance of creating boundaries for ourselves (and not in like a lame-o conceptual way, Sam breaks down the nitty gritty of her calendar and how it changed everything when she figured out what actually fuels her. (And screw everyone else's definitions of productive and successful!). I point this out because what Sam says will challenge you with practices that some might consider SUBVERSIVE – especially in a culture that often rewards toxic productivity. And I think that listening to her story can help ALL OF US – because I have never met a human who said I AM REALLY GOOD AT CREATING BOUNDARIES. This episode is all about being honest with yourself and creating a schedule that supports you living your most meaningful and creative life. Yvette turned down 8 agents. She took the time to meet with all of them, but she just wasn't feelin' it… And this was going to be her FIRST rep since graduating from USC! How did she go from unrepresented recent grad to empowered decision-making queen? When I first met Yvette she was at a crossroads… To be fair, WE ALLLLL WERE! March 2020 forced a lot of actors to rethink their plan – plus Yvette had decided to seek refuge in her family's home (which can bring its own layer of confusing failure-y feelings to the zennest of us all). As it turns out, home sweet home was the perfect place for her #agentgoals journey of self-discovery (→ it paid off big time when she finally did say YES to the agent of her dreams). In today's episode of the podcast, Yvette Gonzalez tells us how she reclaimed her Latina identity and taught herself to be unapologetic in the way she shows up (both in her agent meetings, and now, ALLLLLL THE AUDITIONS coming her way!). In our conversation, listen for Yvette's answers to these questions: How did she find the representation that was right for her? What helped her understand what she wanted from reps during meetings? How did she keep herself in a place of strength when it was time to walk away from a rep who didn't align with her vision? Thank you for tuning in to this episode of Brian Breaks Character! The titles of Amie McNee's FOUR books will tell you all you need to know about why she's today's guest on the podcast: We Need Your Art Collection, For the Burnt Out Artist, For the Perfectionist, For the Procrastinator. (Reads kinda like a blessing for the audience of Brian Breaks Character, amiright?)Amie joined me all the way from Sydney, Australia and just like her 89.5K followers on Instagram I instantly fell in love with her incredibly honest & authentic rallying cries for creative people. Amie is an author, speaker, creative coach and a book doula. She teaches a time-tested journaling technique that is designed to help you unlock your creative juju (at the time of our recording she'd been journaling every morning for the last 1,379 days). She gives us the inside track on WHY we procrastinate on creative endeavors and HOW to overcome it. And best of all, Amie is a fiery ball of enthusiasm & energy – my face still hurts from laughing and smiling for our entire conversation. She couldn't embody more of what this podcast is all about. P.S. If you journal, or ever tried to journal, or have zero desire to journal but would loooooove all the clarity and confidence that you've heard comes from it, you gotta hear Amie's take on how to do it well so it actually serves you and serves your creativity. When you audition for a pilot, there are TWO different casting offices that need to sign off on you before you are booked. There's the project casting director – these are the names you're familiar with like Michael Nicolo & Anya Colloff or Bonnie Finnegan & Steven Jacobs. And then there's the studio/network casting directors – the folks at CBS or NBC who are responsible for… wait, what are they responsible for exactly? If you're like me, you picture these folks in fancy, gated buildings wearing high heels and eating expensive salads while giving orders during important meetings at grandiose conference tables a la The Morning Show. Amanda Richards is Sony Pictures TV Studios' Executive Director of Casting and she clears it up for me on today's episode of the podcast. She gives us a “backstage studio tour” of how pilots move across her desk and through the development process all the way to casting and production. Now that self-tapes and zoom callbacks are the norm, testing for a pilot/network has changed – big time. And since I have ZERO doubt that you'll test for a Network pilot someday, I highly recommend you give today's episode a listen so you're prepared. Plus, Amanda created the first ever Diverse Actors Showcase at Sony and shares exactly how it came to be – (and how you can get involved!). Pilot season strikes abject fear in most actors because it's like giving candy to your compare-and-despair demons. And now that they're hyped up on sugar, they can quietly chisel away at your confidence and purpose… NOT ON MY WATCH! Knowledge is power and I believe educating yourself during this time is pivotal – let this episode be just one way you can empower yourself to DECIDE how you'll think about this time of year. TW // Eating Habits are discussed on this episode Today's guest is the co-author of one of my favorite books, Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life. This book is my jam because it's all about purpose. Francesc Miralles and Héctor García wrote the international bestseller Ikigai and Francesc joins me from Spain to explain what Ikigai actually means. It's a Japanese word with many translations. It literally means a life worth being lived, but he shares that it is your purpose in life, it's your reason to live, but also more simply, it is the motivation we have to get up in the morning and start doing things. We take a deep dive into talking about one's purpose and passion and how eating habits, movement and community play a major factor in being able to live a truly balanced life. More About Francesc - Francesc Miralles is a writer published all around the world. He is co-author, with Héctor García, of the smash hit Ikigai, translated into more than 60 languages and reaching the bestseller lists in the United States, U.K., India, Holland and Turkey, among other countries. His novel Love in Lowercase has been translated into 27 languages. Thank you for tuning in to this episode of Brian Breaks Character!
