Send us a textThis week on the Montana Outdoor Podcast your host Downrigger Dale has a blast talking with Kathy and Jody Goodman. Think about it, how many husband and wives do you see out fishing together? Sure, a lot of couples fish together now and then but you really don't see many that go fishing together a lot. But this couple sure does, and they are living proof that in their case a couple that fishes together stays together. When you listen to this podcast you will have a great time hearing about their first date out fishing. Jody had fished since he was a little boy but Kathy had never really fished. Wait until you hear this story. Let's just say that not warning your date that when they pull a Ling (also known as a Burbot) out of the water they will wrap around their arm, that could just end the date pretty fast! So what happened? Listen to the podcast and find out! Even though that happened their relationship, obviously, continued and it has turned into a wonderful story you will have a blast listening to. Kathy and Jody also talk to Rigger about how they learned together how to fish for the mighty King Salmon in Fort Peck Reservoir and how they now have become really good at it. Kathy also talks about the business she started that makes some great outerwear that fishermen and women love to wear while out fishing or just having fun in Montana's outdoors. Yup this is for sure the feel-good podcast of the year that you will have fun listening to and you might just learn a thing or two from this dynamic fishing duo. Send us a textThis week on the Montana Outdoor Podcast your host Downrigger Dale is joined by Ice Fishing Pro Eric Magnuson. Eric is an incredible ice fisherman and even does testing for many companies that produce ice fishing gear, like Vexilar, Clam Outdoors, Mack's Lure and others. Eric and Rigger have a great discussion that we are positive you will find very interesting and helpful, whether you are an experienced ice fisher person or just starting out. One thing Rigger found interesting was how Eric uses his Vexilar Fish Finder and how accurate Eric says it can be. Vexilar is not something a lot of Montana ice fishermen use these days as they tend to gravitate to the new Garmin, Lowrance or Humminbird units. However, wait until you hear just how sensitive he can operate the new Vexilar, like being able to drop one maggot into the ice hole and fallow it all the way to the bottom of the lake! What?! Being that Eric typically fishes outside of Montana in the lakes of Idaho and Eastern Washington he brings possible new ideas for those of us who spend most of our time on Montana ice. However, no matter what ice you will be fishing on this winter you will indeed get some ideas that will improve your skills form this podcast. So, hit the play button and get to listening and then check out the links below for more info about the things Rigger and his guest Eric Magnuson talk about this week on the Montana Outdoor Podcast!Links:To follow Eric Magnuson on his ice fishing adventures, click here to go to his Facebook Page.To read Eric's latest article about fishing for Burbot click here.Click here to read Eric's latest article about using fish finders. To learn more about the Vexilar fish finder that Eric uses click here.Eric talked about gear from Automatic Fisherman, click here to learn more.To learn more about the Toothpick Hook Remover click here. Here is Eric's list of "must have" gear to go out on the ice with.Ice PicksSpud barThrow Rope Proper clothing 5gal bucket to carry gear and use as a seat.Rod and TackleT2 Toothpick hook removerProper BootsAugerSonar/MapsFishing PartnerSmall Jet Sled to tow gear behind Questions for Eric? Send us a textThis week on the Montana Outdoor Podcast your host Downrigger Dale talks with Bob Loomis from Mack's Lure, inventors of the world-famous Wedding Ring fishing lure. Bob has been on the podcast before and if you listened before then you know if there is one thing Bob knows it is fishing! Bob got his start 43 years ago at the legendary fishing rod manufacturer G. Loomis Fishing Rods working with family there. Years down the road he moved over to Mack's Lure which is another company that has been a legend in the tackle business since 1969. Their famous product the Wedding Ring has been a staple among Kokanee fishermen for it seems forever. But believe it or not the tackle business is not his true passion, that would be of course the act of fishing itself. This guy lives and breathes it! So as a result, when you listen to this podcast you are going to get a TON of ideas of how to catch fish through the ice and most of all some fantastic suggestions of what to use to do that! You will hear Bob and Rigger talk about all kinds of different lures that will be great to catch fish and Bob goes over lots of great techniques of how to use them for the different species you may be going after. If you want to get a look at the different lures they talk about, there are links below. Then just head to any of the Montana Outdoor Approved stores and pick up what you want to use. This week Gord and Liam sit down with biologist, Jeff Matity to discuss the amazing underwater world of burbot. Did you know that burbot communicate with each other when they spawn? And that the non-breeders guard and protect the spawning grounds against intruders. We also examine the ways you can use this cutting-edge science to increase your catch of burbot — you can decoy them using muskie baits — and land more of the fabulous freshwater cod every time you go fishing. We even divulge a top secret burbot tactic with a crazy spin off benefit: the biggest northern pike of your life.
In todays episode, Logan and Brandon sit down with Craig Mcdougall from Anglers Edge Mapping to talk all things mapping! The guys get into how to map a lake, some of the projects Anglers Edge has on the way and some of the behind the scenes stuff that most people wouldn't think of when it comes to mapping a lake. Be sure to check out their website for awesome lake prints and mapping options. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ We are SUPER EXCITED to announce the official approval of the second annual Wknd Warriors Co. Blood magic, healing and giving birth to red coral! What else is Medusa known for? Join April, Harmony and Maggie as they discuss the snake medicine of Medusa. What does the reptile and snake energy stand for? Snake has always stood for wisdom and is connected to the wisdom of sexual energy with the kundalini serpent. Medusa's Snakes After being raped by Poseidon, the famed goddess Athena cursed Medusa and her two sisters. April shares the traced roots of Medusa to a North African, Burbot religion. Stheno and Euryale, Medusa's sisters were two innocent women who were turned into gorgons, but their origins seem more connected to the Greeks. Burbot were once so common in British rivers they were used as pig feed and an important cog in the larger wheel of a rivers lowland ecosystem. Fast forward to the early 21st century and they are extinct from our waterways. Why did they die out? Why bother to bring them back? Who is working to bring them back? Are rivers healthy enough for them and will they cause issues with fish currently in rivers all these questions answered and much more as we wade through all the misinformation that is the burbot. I speak to not one but four guests today all experts in Burbot including Johan Auwerx - Institute of Nature & Forest Conservation, Belgium (Currently breeding and reintroducing burbot to Belgium) Ian Wellby - Fishery Health Scientist & Worked on a feasibility study to reintroduce burbot in 2005 Mark Everard - Angler and Fish Scientist he literally wrote the book on burbot (see here!) This episode is a conversation with Jacob Hernandez, who is one of my friends and fishing mentor. Over time, Jacob has acquired a ton of fishing knowledge. Tulibees! Burbot! Whitefish! I thought this was a fishing show! It certainly is! We've got the country's #1 authority on ice fishing with us and some of the things Brian “Bro” Brosdahl talks about are the amazing (and delicious) species that are normally only caught during hard water season. Bro explains a lot of the ice fishing basics for beginners but also shares plenty of quality information for the more experienced hole hoppers out there. Did you know that a lot of great ice fishing tips can also be used to up your game on open water? Please give Bro a listen!Dan Johnston from St. Croix is with us to give tips on how to deal with cold weather and the impact it has on fishing. He's not talking about ice, just the cold weather that most all of us face at this time of year.Joe Opager, Director of Communications for Major League Fishing is with us to talk about the upcoming MLF season, the huge Redcrest Cup Championship and the amazing Redcrest Expo!

In this episode of the hard water fishing show Jeff and Jason talk to Colby Sabutis, who is a ice fishing guide based in New Hampshire and Vermont. Current Events Catch and Cook https://www.catchandcook.net/ On of my new favorite you tube channels is Jay Siemens https://bit.ly/3nQdXmh He is also the creator of catch and cook. A great alternative to shore lunch for cooking fish. I had some this summer and it was excellent. Probably even better because someone else cooked it for me. FYI no sponsorship for this, just a product I like. Here is the video we spoke about with fly in fishing https://bit.ly/2ZtFtg8 Here is a video about first ice https://bit.ly/2ZtFtg8 Utility Trailer to ice fishing shack Listener Cody sent in some pictures of a converted utility trailer to an ice fishing shack. These are posted over on Facebook and Instagram. Rogers on Red Predicting fishable ice first week on December, but we will see. https://bit.ly/3I012Xc Gear Home made ramp for ice shack Get a aluminum extension ladder, used for cheap. Cut it down and put a series of rollers to get your shack on and off of your pickup truck. Jason will post some pictures on our page. You can also get a winch and mounted in the front of a picket, mount the winch in the front of the pickup and then you can use it to load and unload your heavy ice shack without risk of injury. Pickup Truck Jason gave some great advice on pickup truck buying. If you want a fast pickup truck get a red one. The red ones are always faster than the blue ones. Lure Storage Jeff talked about using tackle box containers and how they are making a mess. I am thinking of changing the way I store tackle. I am thinking of getting similar smaller ones that are fully open and then put some foam in them to prevent damage. Basically remove the cons from these two products. What I am using right now I have one of each of these https://amzn.to/3FUgXEx or this https://amzn.to/3FQDdPv . This is a trophy angler box I used for my tungsten jigs It has foam on one side and on the other we have hard plastic. This is what I used for my smaller panfish jigs. https://bit.ly/2ZploHG Pros 1. You can fit them in your pocket 2. They are cheap 3. You can have on per species or fishing type. I have one for tip ups, one for pan fish and two for spoons. Cons 1. They can get messy fast 2. The hard plastic can damage your lures Hard Water Expo https://bit.ly/3xs8epX Attended the Hard Water expo It was a small show and I did not stay to long, but found a few new notable things. Fish Daddy Lures https://bit.ly/3cRsJmz Specializes in LED jigs. We had Andy from Fish Daddy Outdoors a few seasons ago, you can find the interview here S2E9- What Food To Bring Ice Fishing and Interview with Andy from Fish Daddy Lures They have a new lure out that looked interesting the jig flare spoon, an alternative to using those glow stick spoons. https://bit.ly/3nX0s4t Go Athletic Apparel https://bit.ly/3cP5Gcb Got a head sock and also a neck Gater at the show. https://bit.ly/3DW5BiP Balaclava https://bit.ly/3CWP5h9 can you eat Baklava in your Balaclava? They are made in the USA. My plan is when I am on a snowmobile to wear these to keep warmer. BassKhang https://bit.ly/3xquW1K These shuttles look really cool. Looking at them they seemed very high quality. Maybe Jason can field test one in the future with his helix 7. This caused Jeff to digress into talking about how it can be hard to use his Helix 7 outside on very sunny days, and how a traditional flasher may be better. Clam x100 Pro Thermal https://bit.ly/3xsPjLz This is a one man clam that looks like the ultimate, really like this. The poles are huge but they don't collapse so you can move quickly. This thing is super spendy though and super heavy. Clam Kenia https://bit.ly/3nUBeDB This one is another really comfy option that I look at every year. I like that it has poles that don't have to extend and also its much lighter. Jason talks about how even on his Nanuk he does not collapse the poles because you can move quickly. Eric Wallace Decoys https://bit.ly/3cRv0OD Eric Wallace had these awesome decoys for spearing. I lack the words to describe how beautiful these are. I would feel back using them on the ice. Jeff and Jason talk about our one failed spear fishing attempt. The water was so cloudy we could not even see the decoy in the hole. Here is a video we spoke about https://bit.ly/3HTFiMv where his work was featured on Minnesota Bound Listener Request Jason is requesting a picture for a better setup for his Camera. He is not happy with his storage and how its hard to use. He would like to make it easier to deploy the camera. Please send us your idea and pictures hardwatershow@gmail.com If you have something awesome maybe we will have you on the show to tell us about it. Guest / Legend Colby Sabutis is an ice fishing guide in NH and we are super excited to have him on the show. He tells us all about ice fishing in New Hampshire and Vermont. Also a fly fishing guide Local Fire Department in NH Works for Woodstock inn and resort https://bit.ly/2ZpytRi as a fishing guide https://bit.ly/3nUg9ZU Beverages 1911 Cranberry Hard Cider We did beverages with Colby. Colby brought a 1911 hard cider out of New York it sounded really good. Here is a link to the page for more information https://bit.ly/3CX1v8L Great Lakes Brewing Company Eliot Ness https://bit.ly/3xozrtL Old Milwaukee Jason continues his tour of old man beers. Species Colby targets trout a lot more than in the mid-west. When they fish in Vermont the will target Crappie, Blue Gill and Pike. For trout we are talking about Rainbows, Brooks, Browns and Lake. Cusk AKA eel pout or Burbot. Also maybe Toad or Lakers. White perch and yellow perch. What is Different about ice fishing in New Hampshire? Ice castles, are not really used, usually Bob houses are home built items. Ice Fishing Traps? This is similar to what we would call a tip up in the Midwest. But they are different than a beaver dam. Heritage Laker Traps more information can be found here https://bit.ly/3FQhPKh You can have 2-6 lines per person depending on the regulations on the lake. Colby uses Ifish Pro also. These seem to be coming more popular. Here is a link to Amazon https://amzn.to/2ZwMEUU . This is a tip up rig for your rod. Auger Started with a hand auger, but moved to a Jiffy. Partnered with Eskimo fishing and have a gas auger from Eskimo now. Lures Here are a few of Colby's favorite lures. Clam Leech Flutter Spoon https://amzn.to/3nVl7G7 Pinhead minnow https://amzn.to/3p6P05k Jason has also had some good success for Walleyes in the mid-west with this lure. Swedish Pimple https://amzn.to/3oXPTNI Clam Dingledop https://amzn.to/3lc7uAe Clam Epoxydrop https://amzn.to/32pyyFJ Bait Shiner and smelt live smelt Rods - 28 - 36 inch heavy or medium heavy ( limit creek outfitters) - Colby uses Limit Creek rods. Here is a link for more info. https://bit.ly/3FNcBio - Also working with Driftwood rods https://bit.ly/32pxVvR I did not see ice rods on the website I think they might be new. - 2 in is longest rod Colby uses for Lakers. Reel Colby uses Pflueger or Shimano spinning reels. This Pflueger reel is one both Jason and I like. https://amzn.to/3D8b8BH the 20 or 30 size works nice for ice fishing. I have started to prefer the bigger size to reduce line twist. Line Braid with a floral leader. 6,4, or 8 lb test depending on situation. Lake Winnipesaukee Ice Fishing Derby https://bit.ly/32D5kn1 Colby talks about a huge ice fishing derby he has participated in the past. In 2022 its February 13-14 Electronics Garmin Striker with a boat transducer and a Lowrance hook 4 also use Navionics Fly Fishing We also talked about fly fishing, Colby has been fly fishing for a bit over 11+ years. Attended Orvis advanced fly fishing school. Have been two years as a guide at the Woodstock Inn. Colby did 100+ fly fishing tips this year! Legend Colby tells a legend about catching over 55 Lakers in four and a half hours. Talks about how to stuff your lake trout with crab meat and bread crumbs and how great that is.
This is not a podcast to interest everyone. It is about the Burbot, only fish in the UK that has been declared extinct in known history. Please also be warned that this podcast is recorded in one take with no editing and there is a dog snoring in the background. and I stumble over some words and make some mistakes.I make podcasts that interest me and I cannot be bothered to spend an age recording the perfect podcast. In fact I recommend that you do not listen to this podcast unless you are interested in the natural history of the burbot. I have not given any sources, but the Southampton University Report on the possibility of reintroducing the species (available online) has a long list of sources for anyone interested. My next podcast will be a paranormal podcast for Halloween.

Rob and Ryan discuss the article, the dangers of fishing for spawning fish, social media influencers, his guiding business, remote travel, and those that lived in Wyoming thousands of years ago.
