Kristy Ashton is a portrait photographer who was born in Australia but now lives and works in Scotland. Kristy's great great great grandfather was George Washington Wilson, one of the pioneers of outdoor photography who photographed Queen Victoria and John Brown in 1863 - so her connection to photography and to Scotland runs deep. Kristy's unique style is a culmination of a number of ingredients from her personal journey - an innate sense of creativity, a romantic dream of scotland and a love of renaissance painters resulting in images that are somehow otherworldly and completely authentic all at the same time. Our conversation covers Kristy's road to Scotland, the ups and downs of running a photography business through a global pandemic, why Merinos are my favourite kind of sheep and much much more - here's my conversation with Kristy Ashton. Episode 58: The Digital Convergence Podcast crew - Chris Fenwick, planetMitch, and Carl Olson talk with special guest Charley Voorhis of Voortex Productions. Charley is also an video production instructor for Wanatchee Valley Tech. His passion for video shines through in his videos, and that passion carries over to his students at Wanatchee Valley Tech. Last year Charley's students placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place at the regional Skills USA film contest. The students did so well, that it prompted a controversy: should the Canon 7D camera be banned from use by students who enter the contest? Does shooting with a Canon 7D give students an unfair advantage over other students using older video equipment? Should the equipment used matter? What does this say about the art of filmmaking - is the camera or the person that makes the art? It's an interesting discussion! planetMitch brings us up to date on the latest pricing and pre-order information about the Canon C300 and the new Canon Cinema series T-stop lenses. We learn what the difference is between T stops and F stops and why it matters to high-end video production.

Episode 42 - Featuring Victoria Taylor-Gore, artist, educator, and filmmaker - with host Carl Olson (http://16x9cinema.com) and co-host Chris Fenwick (http://chrisfenwick.com). Victoria Taylor-Gore's pastels have been exhibited professionally for over 20 years with representation in premiere art galleries in Sante Fe and Taos, New Mexico. Her pastels have a luminous quality - ordinary scenes appear backlight with warm light emanating from an unseen light source. Victoria recently begin experimenting with a Canon 7D to produce short films featuring her art and antique miniatures. She has also ventured outside captuing such scenes as Cadillac Ranch along Route 66. Victoria says "the Canon 7D has changed my life - what a magical tool." Victoria continues: "Painting, filmmaking, and photography deal with the same essential design components... composition, light, color, emphasis...it's all part of visual storytelling." In this episode, Chris and I are amazed by Victoria's visual story telling and the clever, experimental approach she takes to accomplish her vision. She clearly has an eye for visual story telling. In this episode Victoria delights us with her narative as to how she "paints as a director" and how film is affecting her pastels in new and exciting ways. You will be inspired by Victoria's new found passion for filmmaking with the Canon 7D.

Kyle Roberts, whose day job is working with pro broadcast video, talks to us about how he stood in line for the iPhone 4 as soon as it was available and decided to attempt to make on of the first music videos made on an iPhone 4. He connected with Dr. Pants and filmed the video for their song - Sarsaparilla Girl - at Pops (one of the largest root beer stores in the USA) along Route 66. Kyle's video received mentions on NPR and in USA Today. Kyle talks about his stop-motion filmaking with a Canon 7D camera and Dragon Stop-Motion software. Episode 23 - Nino Leitner and Sebastian Wiegaertner - The Philip Bloom Interns - on the Digital Convergence Podcast by 16x9 Cinema with host Carl Olson - a visual artist, photographer, and filmmaker based in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Nino Leitner is a filmmaker, DP and film producer based in Vienna, Austria. Nino focuses mainly on commercial work as well as documentaries. Sebastian Wiegärtner is an experienced graphic designer who recently started filmmaking with a Canon 7D. Both Sebastian and Nino recently worked together as interns in Prague with Philip Bloom on the George Lucas film Red Tails. A few days ago, I had an amazingly delightful conversation with these two brilliant filmmakers in Europe. I did my best to pry secrets out of them about working with Philip on the Red Tail feature film production by George Lucas. However, my cunning was no match for the steely resolve of Nino and Sebastian. They didn't budge. Next time I'll make sure there's a round of beer available. Nonetheless Nino and Sebastian talk extensively about using the Canon T2i and 7D for their video work.

Episode 13 of the Digital Convergence Podcast by 16x9 Cinema with host Carl Olson - a visual artist, photographer, and filmmaker based in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Within every Hollywood film is a love story. Our guest for this episode of the Digital Convergence podcast is a filmmaker who has pioneered the development of the wedding concept film: Kevin Shahinian of Pacific Pictures. Kevin has a talent for making a documented event look as if it had been scripted, staged, and produced by a Hollywood movie studio. Viewing Kevin's work on the Pacific Pictures Vimeo channel, you can readily see that Kevin is a master of producing concept films in a number of different genres. His productions range from Bollywood comedy / musicals to intense thrillers (with a happy ending of course!). Recently, Kevin undertook the ambitious challenge of merging a wedding concept film with documenting the actual wedding event. Teaming up with an amazing and talented film crew - including Patrick Moreau (Stillmotion), Joe Simon (Joe Simon Wedding Films and featured in Episode 4 of the Digital Convergence podcast), and Casey Warren (MIND|Castle Studios) - Kevin set off to Udaipur, India, to the breathtaking region of Rajasthan. This area is also known as the "City of Lakes." Entirely shot using video DSLR's (Canon 5D Mark II, Canon 7D), "City of Lakes" was filmed entirely on location during the 3 day long wedding event. In this episode Kevin talks with me about the challenges of producing "City of Lakes. Were the results worth it? "City of Lakes" premiered for the first time at NAB 2010 in Las Vegas. Kevin talks about the positive reaction to the film. He talks about those who were present for the premiere and their reaction to his work. Kevin talks about why he chose to use video DSLRs to shoot this film and the challenges inherent to the format. "City of Lakes" will be released in full on Pacific Pictures' website on Friday, April 23. Kevin was in the process of encoding and uploading "City of Lakes" as we spoke for a few minutes about him and his work. It was indeed a treat talking with Kevin. No doubt we'll be seeing more from this talented story teller and cinematographer!
