The intense drama and riveting action in the newest primetime CBS hit series FIRE COUNTRY is accompanied by spectacular firestorms: The work of visual effects leaders CBS VFX which was selected by producers to create the namesake infernos and deliver other critical visual effects for the most watched new network series of the season. Led by VFX Supervisor Colin Strause, whose career includes such big-screen blockbusters as RAMPAGE, SAN ANDREAS and THE AVENGERS, CBS VFX brings together a visual effects crew of more than 100 people to deliver as many as 135 effects shots in every episode of the series from Jerry Bruckheimer Productions and CBS Studios. To make fire into a palpable antagonist in the series and to showcase the many different and terrifying forms that fire can take, the work from CBS VFX incorporates multiple elements, sometimes including actual pyrotechnics that were filmed on set in highly controlled circumstances. Although the series is set in Northern California, it is shot in British Columbia where extremely dry conditions mostly prevent the large-scale use of physical fire. FIRE COUNTRY is the largest in an impressive range of recent projects for CBS VFX, which have also included the acclaimed series ONE PERFECT SHOT for HBO Max and ARRAY Filmworks; and innovative virtual production solution to COVID-relateds challenges for THE DREW BARRYMORE SHOW; and special productions for the 2021 MTV Movie Awards and NCAA Final Four.  CBS VFX has developed groundbreaking technology and created visual effects for multiple series across many networks, including Apple TV's ROAR, THE OFFER for Paramount +, THIS IS US on NBC, Netflix's DEAD TO ME, and BIG SHOT on Disney +. Brothers Colin and Greg Strause have charted a meteoric rise from self-taught artists working on local cable commercials in the suburbs of Chicago, to renowned visual effects gurus. Their careers began on the original run of THE X-FILES television show before working their way onto early CG-driven features, THE NUTTY PROFESSOR, VOLCANO, and the iceberg sequence of James Cameron's TITANIC. Founding their own VFX house, Hydraulx in 2002, the brothers have worked on visionary sequences for over ninety feature films including AVATAR, THE AVENGERS, SKYFALL, 300, CAPTAIN AMERICA, 2012, IRON MAN 2, BATTLE: LOS ANGELES and THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW. Their work on the latter brought Greg a BAFTA for Best Achievement in Special Visual Effects. In this Podcast, Allan McKay interviews the VFX Supervisor, Director and Producer Colin Strause about his start in VFX – from launching his own company Hydraulx to directing feature films – his learning on the job and working on the challenging fire sequences on FIRE COUNTRY on CBS. Welcome to "Starlite Starbrite: Special Unearthed Episode #000.0: The Naming of the Podcast."  Recorded on June 10, 2020, this is the first of two practice sessions that Dave, Dave, and Todd recorded to prove that the podcast could become a reality -- six weeks before publishing their movie review of "The Martian" as episode #001 on July 21, 2020.  In this first unearthed episode, the Geeks discussed & decided on the name of the podcast.  - Which possible podcast names did each Geek advocate for, and which names got shot down?  - Which Geek came prepared with a color-coded spreadsheet of over 60 possible names to work from (this should be an easy guess)?  - How fast did the Geeks come to a decision, and how did each Geek contribute to a portion of the final name?  - After the decision was made, how did the discussion turn to the movie "Battle: Los Angeles," which the Geeks eventually reviewed in episode #086?  - How did the discussion then turn to favorite sci-fi TV characters, and which characters were mentioned?  Which co-hosts mentioned their #1 favorites, and who were they?  You may know the answer to this question if you tuned in to our Favorite Sci-Fi TV Characters topic in episodes #037 & #039 (not a typo; we published a "WandaVision" review between Parts 1 & 2 of the characters discussion).  - And, why does the name of this bonus episode start off "Starlite Starbrite" -- a reference to the trailer park (and neighboring convenience store) in the movie "The Last Starfighter," which we reviewed in episode #033?  Hint:  It's in honor of Dave Teague.  Listen to the first few minutes of the episode for context. We hope you enjoy this stroll down memory lane, appreciate a peak behind the scenes at our process for naming the podcast, and forgive us for the sound quality of recording from 2020 Discord chat using our first set of microphones. : : And, stay tuned all March as we pay tribute to David Charles Teague, who we greatly miss. : : You can contact us at... - E-Mail:  discerninggeeks@gmail.com - Facebook:  #DiscerningGeeksPortal - Twitter:  @discerninggeeks Please rate or review us wherever you listen to podcasts. This week, we review the 1987 sci-fi action flick, "Predator." - Why did Dave T. pick this? Sadly, Dave T. passed away before our review (listen to episode #095 for details), but we honor him by still reviewing his pick. - How many co-stars of "Predator" ran for public office, and how many of those were actually elected? - Which co-host loved this movie? - Did any co-hosts find the movie formulaic? - One co-host compared this movie to the original "Alien" movie. Did he feel "Predator" was better or worse? - Which co-host liked that this movie felt like a classic war movie at first? - Which co-host(s) cited the creature design as being a strength in the movie? - Which co-host compared this movie's handling of characters to "Battle: Los Angeles"? - Which co-host(s) appreciated the intelligence of some of the characters? But, were characters smart enough...often enough...and consistently enough? - Which co-host said he could feel the testosterone in his face? (Gross.) - What did Dave S.'s wife think of this movie? (Note: No big surprise, but this movie was not deemed kid-friendly.) - Which co-host felt one special effect was so bad that it made him laugh? - Did the Predator have too many technological advantages to still claim some sense of honor or victory from the "hunt"? - Were any co-hosts okay with the vulgar jokes told by Shane Black's character? - Which one of Dutch's defensive techniques has been scientifically disproven by several TV, YouTube, and publication sources? - Which cheesy visual technique in the movie was compared to the TV show "The A-Team"? - Which co-host thought Dutch was actually killed in the final explosion (he did watch this movie, didn't he)? - What is "Presidor"? - And, what did we all think Dave T. would have given as his rating for this movie, since it was his pick? This week, we review the under-rated and under-appreciated military sci-fi, alien invasion thriller, "Battle: Los Angeles." And, we have a lot of nice things to say about it. No, really, we do. The four of us like or love it to varying degrees, but I think we're all a bit baffled as to this movie's low scores & negative reviews. - How many cast & crew names does Todd butcher during the rundown? - Which co-host(s) agreed that this is not a deep or thoughtful movie (at least not all the time) but that it does have great moments & depicts people being well-trained, skilled, and working well together? - Which co-host(s) appreciated the movie's small mission for its protagonists, rather than the save-the-whole-world-at-once missions common in more typical Hollywood action movies? - What strategies & other military aspects of both the humans & the aliens did the co-hosts appreciate. - Which co-host brought up the movie's appreciable lack of shaky-cam, and how many co-hosts immediately agreed? - What other cinematic techniques & narrative aspects did the co-hosts like in the movie? - There's one scene that is a favorite of 3 or 4 of the co-hosts because of how smart & well-trained it depicts a main character. What is the scene, and who was the first one to bring it up? - Which co-host teared up a little bit upon the last line of dialogue in the movie, and which co-host had the last line of the movie as a major nitpick? - And, which co-host gave this a top rating? Listen now for the answers to these and other questions. Grab your 8 to 10 magazines of ammunition, first aid kit, combat rifle & bayonet, bivy shelter & sleeping bag, poncho, knee & elbow pads, multi-tool, helmet with night vision optics, 3 MREs, 1 gallon of water, extra socks & undergarments, 2 to 4 grenades, a white smoke grenade, a yellow smoke grenade, a thermite grenade, a phosphorus grenade, handgun, and assorted maps & compasses -- all 65 pounds of typical Marine gear -- as we face off against aliens in Battle: Los Angeles. And, be careful. That's "Battle - colon (:) - Los Angeles." "Battle *of* Los Angeles" is a TV movie made for Syfy by The Asylum. Stay tuned in future weeks for our reviews of Jack the Ripper thriller, "From Hell;" one of the best conclusions to one of the best trilogies, "Back to the Future, Part 3;" and the romantic time-travel fantasy, "About Time" (probably in that order, but BttF3 definitely episode #088). Susie Abromeit trains in her craft the same way she trained as an athlete. As a tennis player, Susie dedicated hours a day to perfecting her game and eventually earned the title of #6 top tennis players in the U.S. Despite her incredible success as an athlete, it was performance that always lit up her soul. Growing up in Florida, Susie spent much of her childhood drawing, writing stories, and being encouraged by her teachers and parents when it came to her natural acting talent. After reflecting on whether or not tennis was still serving her dreams and goals, at 18, Susie began to step away from tennis and started writing her own songs which eventually led her to perform alongside hip-hop artist Fat Joe for Atlantic Records. Applying that “killer instinct” from her tennis days, Susie went after what she knew she wanted in her acting career, and has shaped an impressive resume with roles in projects such as “Jessica Jones,” “Sex Drive,” “The Forever Purge,” “Chicago Med,” “The Haves and the Have Nots,” “Battle: Los Angeles,” “Devious Maids” as well as two upcoming projects including the holiday film, “Much Ado About Christmas,” and an appearance alongside Will Smith in the biographical drama “King Richard” set to release this November. Today, Susie shares how she believes stories help us make sense of the world around us. She believes that instead of making our lives into art, it is art that shapes our lives. She leaves listeners with helpful tools such as how to use character development as a form of line memorization, how she went about creating her own project, and she gets honest about the realities of the “machine” that is Hollywood. Tune in as she concludes with an incredible story of how she was able to leave an impression on the legendary Will Smith in a scene that demanded moment to moment actor discovery. Welcome back to the show everyone, on this episode we have a submission from our friend Joe. He goes on to tell us about his aunt who had multiple encounters with UFOs, including a missing time experience. Then we dive into the great Battle Los Angeles. Steve runs us through the history and the mental state of everyone at the time. Once we break into the actual situation it seems super suspect. They change the story several times but the proof still remains. They had three radars pick up a craft, they have photographs of search lights focusing on something and the military fired 1400 anti aircraft rounds at what is explained off as balloons. Something doesn't add up here per the usual military explanation. Annnnnd here's a new episode just for you! We share some news announcements including upcoming tech, an album release, livestream show, casting, and a virtual film festival that's opening with a film about a lovely group of dancing dudes from the Maritimes called The Bhangra Boys. One tidbit that surfaced has K SUPER stoked. There are a fair amount of streaming suggestions too, from a star-studded drama to a LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special (no no, not THAT one). T reviews Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order as it showed up on Game Pass. Much to our chagrin, we continue to be unimpressed with season 2 of The Mandalorian, and share the whys of that. The Simon Says assignments had K sampling Mike Tyson Mysteries and T sharing his thoughts on the Good Omens limited series. We tell you why psychologists think taking trips down pop culture memory lane is good for your mental health and take a little journey of our own back to the days of compilation CDs like Frosh and Big Shiny Tunes. Our last segment is one of our most favourite, Hidden Treasures and Guilty Pleasures. T tells us why folk have been wrong to pan the sci-fi war film Battle: Los Angeles, and K talks about one of her favourite humorous novels (and novelists), a perfectly apt-for-the-season read, The Stupidest Angel by Christpher Moore. One of the things we love to do most is to give independent artists a chance to share their work, and so we finish the recording off with Cevilain's awesome cover of Miley Cyrus' Midnight Sky (thanks guys!).We hope you enjoy!
