Before Your Very Ears
From Song to Cinema: How Cary Brothers Writes With His Eyes and Ears

Before Your Very Ears

Ever wondered how songwriters capture scenery and stories so vivid that they seem to jump out of the song and into real life? Cary Brothers can offer some insight. In addition to releasing three full-length solo albums, the Los Angeles-based musician's songs have been featured in dozens of film and TV productions, including Grey's Anatomy, ER, Scrubs, One Tree Hill, Smallville, 90210, Garden State, and more.Brothers moved to Los Angeles to work in film, but eventually turned to focus on writing music. His experiences in Hollywood gave Brothers a keen visual sense in music—and a deep appreciation for how sounds and visuals can augment one another. This time out on Before Your Very Ears, Brothers joins hosts Sean Watkins and Peter Harper to talk about how to balance the desires of both our eyes and ears while arranging tunes. The end result is a deliciously striking last-call serenade. It starts with a Pogues-esque keys motif, then blossoms into a Waits-meets-Springsteen, back-of-the-bar heartbreaker. The details get filled in as the writing session goes on—the local watering hole with its broken jukebox and laissez-faire doorman—and before long, the cinematic, lonesome ballad takes shape. This episode is sponsored by Berklee Online: https://online.berklee.edu/Join our Patreon: http://patreon.com/beforeyourveryears

Chad Fischer's early work was being a drummer for the band School of Fish ("Three Strange Days"), founded by his college friend Josh Clayton-Felt. Fischer replaced the original their original drummer in 1991; however, he did not play on the band's second album due to a fallout with a producer and was replaced by Josh Freese. Mr. Freese pops up repeatedly in this episode. Nevertheless, Fischer still stayed with the band to perform live. The only official commercial School of Fish release that included his drumming was the single "Take Me Anywhere," which you can hear in this episode.  After School of Fish disbanded in 1994, Chad Fischer built his own recording studio and started writing new material. He signed to Almo Sounds label and formed the band Lazlo Bane, whose debut album, 11 Transistor, was released in January 1997. During the early years, Chad Fischer met Colin Hay, with whom he became a close friend. Fisher played drums on Hay's 1994 album Topanga, while Hay contributed guitar and vocals to Lazlo Bane's cover of "Overkill" from their debut album.  Since then, Chad Fischer took part in the recording of Hay's subsequent studio albums up to Next Year People in 2015. Chad wore many hats, from session musician and songwriter to mixing engineer and co-producer. Chad Fischer's early work on TV scores includes shows My Guide to Becoming a Rock Star and The Class. In 2007 Chad Fischer and Lazlo Bane guitarist Tim Bright started scoring the American medical drama series Private Practice. During its run Fischer and Bright won BMI TV Music Award four times: in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2012. The show concluded after six seasons in 2013. After Private Practice, Chad Fischer started providing music for another ABC show, Scandal. For his work, he won the BMI TV Music Award six times from 2013 to 2018. Oh, yea, and Chad wrote "I'm No Superman" - the theme song to the show Scrubs.  The highly acclaimed Garden State soundtrack, released in 2004, subsequently winning a Grammy Award in 2005 and receiving platinum certification, featured two songs produced by Chad Fischer: "Blue Eyes" performed by Cary Brothers and "Winding Road" performed by actress Bonnie Somerville. Other musicians and bands Fischer produced include Everlast, Lisa Loeb, Colin Hay, and The Good Luck Joes. Are you still reading this?  You should really be listening. San Francisco born producer, engineer, mixer, musician, and songwriter Eric Robinson's first job in the music business was given to him by legendary Grammy-winning producer Steve Lillywhite. He never anticipated a short email to his hero would find him recording Trey Anastasio of Phish and watching Lillywhite mix U2 at the age of 19. Following his summer in Vermont and New York, Eric landed an internship at Royaltone Studios in LA. This quickly turned into a position as a runner, and not long after Eric was assisting on sessions for Barenaked Ladies, Ricky Martin, and Lifehouse with producers Ron Aniello, Mario Caldato and more. After 3 years at Royaltone, Eric left in 2005 to go freelance. In addition to recording, Eric was also getting busy as a sideman in 2006, playing guitar and keys for notable acts in the burgeoning Hotel Cafe scene such as Cary Brothers, Sara Bareilles, Joshua Radin and Jessie Baylin. This lead to international touring, television appearances and a live concert film with Sara Bareilles. On the studio side, Eric simultaneously struck up a working relationship with producer/songwriter Marshall Altman and the two had immediate success. The first album they worked on together was Kate Voegele’s debut for Interscope/MySpace Records. Eric played all the keyboards, most of the guitars, mandolin, accordion, and banjo on the record, as well as recording and mixing it. Kate’s record sold 250,000 copies in the US and the songs were licensed extensively on TV. Next up came Matt Nathanson’s album Some Mad Hope, which Eric recorded with Altman. The album spawned the double-platinum single, “Come On Get Higher.” Then came albums with Natasha Bedingfield, Trevor Hall, William Fitzsimmons, Walker Hayes, Rosi Golan, Bethany Dillon and Adema, spanning genres from pop to folk to country and metal. After establishing Marlay Studios in North Hollywood in 2010, Eric worked with artists such as Taylor Swift, Sia, Michelle Branch, Natasha Bedingfield, The Milk Carton Kids, Carney, Aqualung, Dan Wilson, P!nk, Rachael Yamagata, Brooke Fraser, Switchfoot, and Boyd Tinsley from Dave Matthews Band. Along the way, Eric gained valuable experience working alongside hit producers such as Ryan Tedder, John Alagia, Dan Wilson and Charlie Peacock. In 2014, Eric was nominated for a Grammy for Album of the Year for his engineering work on Taylor Swift’s “Red” album. Eric focuses on mixing music and film score in stereo and 5.1 surround and producing/co-writing with artists. Recent projects include OneRepublic’s Netflix “Once in a Lifetime” in 5.1 surround, indie band The Lighting, the main title to the Netflix show, “The Haunting of Hill House”, country artist Nora Collins and pop band Castro. Eric works out of his own studio in Los Angeles, Marlay Music. eric-robinson.com
