This week, the World Health Organisation launched a new Commission on Social Connection. It may sound like an online dating group; it's not. The Commission aims over the next three years to focus on ways to address the ‘pressing health threat' posed by a global epidemic of loneliness. Loneliness is considered a health issue because it has serious impacts on our mental and physical health. Research shows it can increase the risk of heart disease, arthritis, type-2 diabetes, and can increase the risk of premature death and accelerate cognitive decline. Earlier this year, the U.S. surgeon general published an advisory claiming the health risks associated with loneliness are equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. So how did we get to the point where something each and every one of us should be able to do something about needs to be recognised as a global epidemic and health threat? Covid gave us a reality check - our children were isolated from their peers, workers isolated from office culture, and our elderly isolated from family and friends. It's something we should all be aware of. What's interesting about what the World Health Organisation has come out with is that rates of loneliness are similar all over the world, regardless of a country's status and level of income. And we've already seen some countries take it seriously – in the UK a Minister of Loneliness was appointed in 2018. Apparently the announcement was greeted with humour on both sides of the Atlantic, but since then the Japanese Government and the Victorian state Government have done the same, in 2021. It turns out they were on the money when they recognised this growing issue. We've been measuring loneliness in New Zealand for a while. The latest survey in May found younger people (aged 15-24) are more likely than other age groups to be lonely. It makes sense; we're not just talking about social isolation, but also social alienation, a feeling of not ‘fitting in' which so many young people struggle with. The other demographic who struggle are older people. Yesterday, Newsroom ran an article from researchers Claire Dale and Susan St John talking about who is going to care for us when we grow old – the article deals with a different subject, but their stats were eye opening. “By mid-century the numbers over 65 years are expected to nearly double (from 790,000 in 2020 to around 1.4 million). The baby-boomers will all be over 85 where the numbers roughly treble (from 88,000 in 2020 to around 300,000).” If we're going to care for this 'looming tsunami of older baby boomers' then the WHO is onto something. Maybe starting to think about strategies for dealing with loneliness – for all ages - now isn't as silly as it sounds. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
One woman's fight for a uniform rule and greater penalties for misusing mobility parking spaces continues. Claire Dale petitioned Parliament last year - asking for higher penalties for people who park in a mobility spots and to expand it to include privately-held land that's used by the public - retail spaces and supermarkets, for example. She'll be making her case in person to the Petitions Committee later today. The Ministry of Transport provided a report on the issue to the Committee, saying it was "reviewing regulations" over the issue but that enforcement is complicated. In an interim report the Committee said it was "hopeful" the fine would be raised and that an education campaign would help educate people about misusing the parks. Kathryn speaks to Claire ahead of her select committee appearance.

He was about teaching us about love. Effect on Emotions Mindfulness helps me deal with my emotions by questioning how I feel when someone criticizes me. I used to be triggered by criticism a lot because I experienced it frequently while growing up. Now, I remind myself that it's just someone's opinion, and I evaluate if there's any truth to it. Our thoughts turn into emotions, and those emotions can become beliefs if we dwell on them. I don't want negative beliefs, so I stay aware of my emotions and thoughts. I also consider that the person criticizing me might be having a bad day, so I try not to judge them. Being mindful means being aware of my feelings and thoughts and choosing the beliefs I want to hold onto. Thoughts on Breathing Take a moment, sit on a bench, and breathe the fresh air. It can make you feel so much better. For me, nature is essential; I grew up in the mountains, and it's a big part of who we are. I recommend going out there and feeling nature, even touching the grass with your feet. Suggested Resources Book: The Direct Way: Thirty Practices to Evoke Awakening by Adyashanti App: Listening to Podcasts on Youtube or Spotify Bullying Story Regarding bullying, Janet talked about how being aware and mindful of our words and actions is crucial, especially when we interact with children. Our beliefs can pass down to them, so it's essential to set a positive example. Bullying often happens when someone lacks self-esteem and hasn't learned how to treat others with kindness. While we must protect ourselves from harm, it's also important to have compassion for the bully, as they might have learned hurtful behavior from somewhere else. Words of Wisdom I would say that success in every area of your life is real and obtainable. But the power is always in our hands. Because we get we've been given choice. That's the one thing we have given choice and free will. And so when you can look at the landscape that way, if you see something that's not working for you, or you're not living the life that you want to live, go out and figure it out, sit down and sit in the feeling of where it's coming from because you'll discover it, and then you can change it. Robert Stephenson no longer carries trinkets in his pockets. His need to wear crystals that represent his spirituality has lessened. This, he says, is because he has come to embody the meaning of those items in his very being. This shift has characterised an important period in Robert's life, in which he has departed from his role as director of Animas Centre for Coaching and launched his own coaching business, Fan the Flames Ltd.Robert talks about openly and honestly about why he left Animas and the impact this change has had on him, and he describes how he has truly stepped into his power since his first appearance on The Coach's Journey Podcast in July 2021. Back then, Animas provided a framework – or scaffolding – for Robert's work. So what happened when that scaffolding was no longer present? Our conversation explores Robert's transformation in depth, offering valuable lessons about how to manage change and how to grasp opportunities that arise when our circumstances change.Robert explains how he made decisions led by intuition, discovered through play, or inspired by dreams, as he took ownership of his future while embracing his "nowness". In this episode, we talk about:Recognising change in ourselvesWhat are the stabilisers we use in our lives? And can we take them off?Embracing endings and managing changeListening to our bodies and accessing our deeper knowledgeHow to move "from loss to legacy"Robert also talks about the courage it takes to remove the masks we wear in our lives and careers, and the new ways people relate to us when we show up as ourselves. To learn more about Robert, visit https://www.linkedin.com/in/robert-stephenson-2491a21/ or listen to his first appearance on the podcast https://www.thecoachsjourney.com/podcast/episode-27-robert-stephenson-animas-how-to-say-yes-and-become-a-conduit-for-change For information about my wider work, my writing or to buy my books, visit www.robbieswale.com.Music by My Good Man William: listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/4KmeQUcTbeE31uFynHQLQgTo support the Coach's Journey, visit www.patreon.com/thecoachsjourney and to join the Coach's Journey Community visit www.thecoachsjourney.com/community. Jason Azevedo created his first manufacturing company with just $600 when he was only 15 years old. At this young age, he was able to establish business with some of the greatest companies in the world such as Starbucks, Nike, Disney, Marvel, Volkswagen, Audi, Lucas films, dodgers, and NBA teams. By the time he was 20 he was already making millions in revenue. Jason is one of the most dynamic people you will meet. He owns and operates the last standing MADE IN AMERICA factories (IN CALIFORNIA NO LESS!) and has hatched a plan to give back the factories and some of his wealth to the American workers. In 2009, Jason co-founded Mosaic, taking on the role of CEO — his talents are far beyond running the company, with duties touching on conceptual development, engineering, and deployment. Since 2009, Jason's been at the helm of growing the company year-over-year, acquiring several entities, and creating several others to round out manufacturing efforts. His emphasis on Made In America is a driving force for how the various companies he's co-founded operate. He also assists with business development and client strategy and is an integral part of how we operate. He is here today to talk about mindfulness in manufacturing. There was a singular event in which he could snap me out of a spiral I was in that completely changed my future. Effect on Emotions I've never been a big yeller. But I used to get very, very upset when things weren't right. My brother, and I used to get into large arguments within the organization. We finally started switching and going. Because every time I'm upset, something happened. I'm the leader. What did I do to cause this, and that changed how our decision-making happened. We just want to fix what we did. Thoughts on Breathing I also did breathwork for the first time two years ago, an actual breathwork session. It was the biggest game-changer mentally for business I've ever done, it actually changed how I live a chunk of my life. So I live out in the country and one of the most important things to me, I'm going to take a walk and just breathe as deep as I can to just kind of let things move through me. Suggested Resources Book: Principles for Dealing with the Changing World Order: Why Nations Succeed and Fail By Ray Dalio App: Oura Bullying Story So I'll take about five, six years back, we had a supervisor, and the supervisor effectively got results, that put up some of the best numbers in the company. But it was weird, you walk anywhere in our buildings, and people are smiling, talking joking around, also, you go into their sector, and that wasn't the case. So we started looking into it and understand that while they weren't getting results, they were doing it by surely bullying their employees. It was like if you didn't hit your numbers, you're near a piece of this. We took this person's side and said, Hey, I need you to really think about what you are here. And they're like, Well, what I gotta be forceful on everybody. I gotta do this. Think about what you're doing? And what, what do you mean? What is this really about? Take the fear away, take what can we do today to fix the problem that and you fall in and out of traps like that on a regular basis. Elaine’s story of being a rental retiree may become very common in the future. It’s estimated that by 2053 almost half of over-65s will be renting in this country. Already, around one in four people between 50 and 65 don’t own the home they live in, based on data from the 2018 census. Dr Claire Dale from the Retirement Policy and Research Centre has been tracking the decline in homeownership and she believes it’s a concerning trendSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Fed up with people who misuse mobility parks, Claire Dale has launched a petition for tougher enforcement and stiffer fines. 150,000 mobility parking permits are currently in use nationwide through a scheme that's been administered by CCS Disability Action since the late 70s. But the enforcement falls to the carpark owner - the local council, if it's a public space, or the private landowner, in the case of malls or supermarkets. Claire joins Kathryn to explain where she thinks the current enforcement is weak, and what she hopes from presenting the petition at Parliament tomorrow. Also joining the conversation is Raewyn Hailes, an access coordinator for CCS Disability Action who runs the organisation's app for reporting mobility park misuse. Who are the biggest offenders and which companies turn a blind eye?
Shouted at and even pushed - Claire Dale says challenging anyone over illegally using a mobility park is a risk. But as a person who suffers pain simply to walk, she is determined to fight for her rights. So she has launched a parliamentary petition seeking bigger fines for those who take her park.

We are a cocktail of chemicals, says Claire Dale and when we understand this, we can fill our energy tanks, unleash our personal power and rock our day, every day! A highly relevant, practical discussion in which Claire shares her four-part strategy to tap into personal power for a life that is more balanced, fulfilling and satisfying. Feeling pulled in all directions and crashing through each day in a state of tension and crisis creates a vicious cycle in our bodies, often resulting in illness. Claire holds a mirror up to us and urges us to grow our understanding of Physical Intelligence, control our breathing and movement, call upon the right chemicals at the right time and dance through life more lightly in the knowledge that we are truly in control. With a chemical for every occasion, we can create our own optimal lives if we embrace the brilliance of our own physical design which according to Claire underpins our cognitive and emotional intelligences. Not only is Claire a Physical Intelligence guru, but she turns her generous spirit to highlighting the realities of modern-day slavery in our world. She adds momentum and support to raising awareness by flying the banner of an organization at the rockface of this human travesty called The Empowerment Collective. It has never been more important for leaders to master their own emotional and cognitive intelligence. In times of crisis everyone is under elevated levels of stress, but leaders bear a greater responsibility to manage their responses with equanimity and empathy. EQ and IQ are important to effective decision-making, but science is revealing that these intelligences begin in our bodies, as part of a complex system of neurochemicals and hormones. This system can be refined through basic behavioural changes that lead to increased individual and organisational performance. Claire Dale and Patricia Peyton are experts in somatic optimisation and are authors of the groundbreaking book, Physical Intelligence.
