In the early morning hours of September 14, 1982, a man broke into a home in Newport News, Virginia and beat 30-year-old Jesse Perron to death with a crowbar. Then, over several hours, the attacker sexually assaulted Perron’s 22-year-old wife, Teresa, leaving bite marks during the assaults. Teresa and Jesse Perron’s home was located near the shipyard where the U.S.S. Carl Vinson was harbored and where Perron worked as a welder. Over several months bite mark impressions were taken from hundreds of sailors on the Carl Vinson. Police had no suspects at that time. Keith Harward had been among those whose teeth were examined in the immediate aftermath of the investigation, but he had been ruled out as the source of the bitemarks on Teresa by a civilian dental consultant working with the Newport News City medical examiner. When Harward came to court, Teresa was there, but could not identify him as the attacker. After police asked Harward to submit to a second procedure to perform bite mark analysis, they determined that Keith’s bite marks matched the ones found on Teresa. Harward was subsequently convicted of capital murder, rape, robbery and burglary and sentenced to life in prison. The Gouge is a term derived from the second World War. Many of the World War II Navy crews were inexperienced. The Gouge developed as a culture where sailors shared important knowledge and proactively trained each other in their duties to prepare to emergency situations. The Gouge philosophy guided Vice Admiral Robert Harward through forty years in the Navy and a successful career as an international corporate executive. Much of Hayward's career was spent with the Navy SEALs.  During his warfighting experiences in Bosnia, Panama, Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq and Yemen, he never lost a single man under his command. He also served as Deputy Commander of both US Joint Forces Command and United States Central Command. Harward describes The Gouge as “the contract we all have with humanity –sharing the best of everyone for the collective well-being of all.” A military child, Harward was raised overseas and one summer his father encouraged him to spend the break hitchhiking across Iran and Afghanistan. He says the region was a much different place back then but emphasizes that the world is still generally a safe place and encourages young people to get out and pursue adventure. Harward cites several examples of how The Gouge impacted decisions on missions he commanded. One involved the capture of oil facilities during the initial invasion of Iraq. Harward was convinced it was a potential suicide mission so he checked in with the team members and allowed them to make the final decision. He trusted the combined knowledge of his team and the mission was a success. We also spend some time also discussing how The Gouge can help military members making the transition to civilian life and the scourge of Veteran suicides. Following his retirement, several of his “shipmates' convinced him to put his experiences with The Gouge into a book so that others could benefit from his experiences. The result is “The Gouge! Steve Harward served in the Scotland, Edinburgh Mission from April of 2000 through May of 2002. Steve always had a kinship to Scotland from his seminary teacher sharing about serving his mission there and was overwhelmed with joy when the call came. He shares an epic story about using a trash shoot in a council flat as a toilet in an emergency, his budget-friendly mission gear falling apart early mere moments into the mission, NEDs mooning him, and sending a "Dear Jane" letter to his then girlfriend simultaneously when she mailed her own "Dear John" to him! Today's guest is a historian of the Romanian military experience Grant Thomas Harward. Grant is a historian with the US Army Center of Military History in Washington, DC. Before going to Ft. McNair, Grant was a historian with the US Army Medical Department Center of History and Heritage in San Antonio. He received his BA in History from Brigham Young University, then took an MA at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. He completed his PhD at Texas A&M University, under Friend-of-the-Pod and brisket coneseur Roger Reese. Grant is the author of Romania's Holy War: Soldiers, Motivation, and the Holocaust (Cornell), which was awarded the Barbara Jelavich Book Prize by the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies. He is also the co-author, with Johnny Shumate, of the forthcoming book Romania 1944: The Turning of Arms against Nazi Germany (Osprey). Grant's articles have been published in the Journal of Slavic Military Studies, Studies in Ethnicity & Nationalism, Army History, and Air & Space Power History. In 2017, he was the Norman Raab Foundation Fellow at the Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies of the US Holocaust Memorial Museum. Admiral Robert Harward is one of history's most accomplished US Navy SEALs. After graduating from the US Naval Academy, his NSW career began when he graduated with BUD/S class 128 in 1984 and joined SEAL Team Three, where he served as a platoon commander. From there, he screened for NSW Development Group, the US Navy's tier-one unit, known at the time as SEAL Team Six, where he served as an assault team leader and operations officer. He earned his master's degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College. Then he served as the task group commander during Operation Desert Thunder in Kuwait, the Joint Special Operations Task Force commander for Operation Rugged Nautilus, the deputy commander of the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force in Bosnia, the Special Warfare Plans Officer for the Commander of Amphibious Forces in the U.S. Seventh Fleet; USSOCOM Aide-de-Camp to the Commander-in-Chief; then as the Executive Officer of NSW Unit ONE and as the commanding officer of SEAL Team Three.Admiral Harward assumed command of NSW Group One in August of 2001 and deployed to Afghanistan shortly after the 9/11 attacks. He commanded a multi-national task force named Task Force K-Bar and directed special reconnaissance and direct action missions throughout the country.The following year, he deployed to Iraq as the commander of Task Force 561, where he commanded NSW Task Group Central.
