Narcissists, sociopaths, psychopaths, or those with any of those tendencies are incapable of sincere apologies. In fact, they are also incapable of apologizing at all! That's why they can only make a "near apology sounding" few words! Unsatisfying? Yes! Underwhelming? Yes. But, too many people buy into them because there hope is high. Today I would like to offer a quick comparison of leader and manager behaviors.Though I am comparing Would like to emphasize that neither side is better than the otherEvery one of the behaviors that I talk about today can and should come into play at some pointNo specific way that will always be the correct path to takeStatementManagers deal with things while leaders deal with peopleOne of the first things that are different would be the use of authorityManagers tend to retain authority while leaders trend towards sharedEnsure that things were done in the correct way and get the job done as planned and expected.Another mentor of mine took me aside one day and asked why I felt it was necessary to do everything myselfI explained that I had been taught to maintain constant controlHis counter to that statement was just because you release some authority and delegate effectively does not mean that you are not in controlWhat an eye-openerI could delegate and in the process get more accomplishedOver the years I learned how to establish what style fo manager or leader I would need to be during projectsCertain jobs would allow for freedom while others would require set parametersNext discovery for me As a manager, I was trained to plan and define limitsWe would create detailed plans and the expectation was that the plan be followedAs I grew and matured in my roles I began to learn about expanding limits. We could stick to the plan but think outside the box as well Try new ways of doing things. Perhaps enhance the way we were completing tasks daily and become more efficientWould like to stress new and excitingYou can create itInnovate And expand in so many waysThis is why I love my subject matterI can go about it in a new fashionI get to expand the limits of leadership and management My next comparisonManagers enforce while leaders reinforceIn management roles, we are often in controlThe enforcement of parameters and set process falls to the manager to ensure that things are done correctly While the leaders perspective is very similar there is a slight change in attitude The focus is still on the end goal but also on the people and how they can make them do betterExpanding forwardManagement many times causes the rules to be strict. It restricts creativity and completes tasks in a set fashionWhile leaders encourage creativityCertain jobs and tasks require us to manage while others will allow us to leadWe must learn when and how to decide which to useIn the final trait, we will speak about todayWe will talk about communication and the difference between the two Managers use a one-way communication tactic while leaders would be more in the two way communication campManagers are often called upon for difficult tasks and conversations or when the details of a task need to be clear and concise. The manager needs to know how to talk while others listen and take note of what they are saying.Leaders would use a more open discussion style fo communicationThey would ask the team members what they thought prior to making decisionsTeam members are encouraged to give input and ask questions This is very much a set of behaviors that aBuzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! Matt has successfully crowdfunded two projects, the Crane Lamp and the Solstice Clock together raised over £100k on Kickstarter. Join us as we talk about the highs and lows of manufacturing in the UK and in China. If you had advice for someone wanting to make their own product, what would it be?Start with something small and less complicated and don't aim for massive numbersTry to use this to learn how to do it, but not necessarily at scale. You can also use this to begin to build your audience and the people who might buy your next product.Visit manufacturers - face to face meetings are still very important, and if they have met you, they will take you more seriously and you can build a stronger relationship with them.Try to do as many things yourself as possible the first time round, even if you get things a bit wrong. If you later want to employ other companies to do your PR etc, you will be able to speak their language having done it yourself the first time around.more manufacturers you visit the more specific you can be, you will enter each conversation wiser.Should manufacturing a product just be left to designers? Or can someone with a good idea do it.Definitely not - anyone can do it. And designers don't necessarily have the best ideas! But if you are not a designer it is probably best to work with a designer to get your product looking and functioning as you want it to - before approaching a manufacturer.Leaving unsolved design questions and the look of a product to manufacturing stage is risky - difficult to have controlWhat's it like manufacturing in the UK?Its a mixed bag. It is very difficult to build complicated products in the UK, with lots of parts. There are few contract manufacturers who offer this. Brands have built up their own manufacturing facilities but do not make other peoples products. Its also difficult to find UK companies! There is no alibaba in the UK, and websites of manufacturers are often terrible and rank badly in google. You might find all the individual ingredients in the UK, PCB manufacture, CNC houses, assembly houses. But you will have to manage it and it will be very expensive.UK is best for specialist manufacture - where quality is key, and low volume. What's the biggest challenge with getting something manufactured in China. Communication - figuring out a bomb proof technique for communicating with the factory, to explain problems etc. But once you have it you can re-use it.Distance and time zonesIf you were to start again what would you do differently.I would try some smaller products that are easier to make first rather than jumping straight in with quite complicated productsI would try to do everything faster - because I am doing everything the first time - I am more cautious and might do too many rounds of samples because I want to be 100% sure. If someone has an idea for an invention, what would you suggest they do first?I think the first thing to consider is making a lifestyle change to allow it to happen. Go to 4 days a week from a full time jobFind a makerspace or somewhere you can prototype it if its physicalStart going to pitching events or crowdfunding events - surround yourself with people doing the same thingMake an incubator for it.What's your advice on marketing physical products?Beautiful imagery and videos of product butWe're brought to you by onthejobmarketing.comIf you're a tradesperson, you need a website and marketing to get more customers. You cannot have unconditional love until you become powerful. Common Excuses Not Pursue God:An excuse is often something that we use to shift responsibility from us to our circumstances.I don’t have time.I already know it.It’s boring. There is no hope. I’ve gone too far. Something to do with how God views you.7 Tips to Becoming a Powerful Pursuer of GodEstablish purpose and vision for your pursuit. Become disciplined.Discipline is embracing the necessary consequences to get to where you want to go.1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 ESVRejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.Remember that you are in a committed relationship. Don’t be ruled by your desires, manage them.Galatians 5:16 ESVBut I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.Never give up.Never allow external circumstances to pull you from your pursuit of God.Determine, and then surrender to, God’s truth.Mark 10:29-31 ESVJesus said, 'Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last first.'James 1:12-16 NKJVBlessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.
Control? What control? My first broken leash in heavy waves and a massive celebration where I couldn’t understand a word
My guest this week is Dr. Bryce Carter, who has a fascinating background as both a highly trained practitioner and instructor of martial arts and a practicing clinical psychologist. On the surface these two areas might seem to have little overlap, but in fact they're highly complementary, as I learned from our discussion. Bryce and I explored the many benefits of training in the martial arts, such as karate, tae kwon do, and jiu jitsu. Some of the topics we discussed included: How martial arts can build self-confidenceWhite Crane Silat (similar to kung fu)Cultivating spiritual developmentMindfulness in actionEastern spiritual principles in the martial artsDeveloping patienceAging and acceptance of physical changesBalancing progress with acceptance of limitationsEmbracing paradoxesThe relationship between instructor and studentEffects of martial arts on relationshipsLearning how you respond under stress, and building resilienceDeveloping the ability to stay calm and focused during conflictUnification of the mind and bodyInstilling discipline and self-controlWhat makes for an effective fighterDealing with anxietyBrazilian jiu jitsuIdentifying where our struggle or impasse really liesHow to deal with unhelpful thoughtsThe state of effortless flowFlow experiences as a psychotherapistOverlap between psychotherapy practice and martial arts trainingSimilarities between CBT and martial arts principlesChoosing among the various martial arts disciplinesSelf-defense coursesThe vibe to look for when choosing a martial arts studioBenefits of martial arts as our bodies ageBeing willing to receive whatever is appearing before us Bryce described a women's self-defense course called Model Mugging; check out their website for training information and locations. Here's more info on Krav Maga, which Bryce mentioned. Bryce Carter, PhD, began his martial art training as a teenager after being on the losing end of a few too many childhood altercations. He achieved the rank of black belt in Yun Mu Kwan Karate in New York under master Min Pai. Bryce then traveled to Indonesia to begin his 30-year long study of the martial art of White Crane Silat. He trained under the late Grandmaster Subur Rahardja at the training center in Bogor, West Java, Indonesia. Upon his return to the US, Bryce taught Silat in branches in New York, Dallas, and San Francisco. In 2001 Bryce became the head trainer of White Crane Silat for all North American branches and he has led workshops in France, Germany, Spain, Bali, as well as throughout the US. Many of his students have gone on to become teachers as well. In addition to Silat, Bryce has studied a variety of martial arts including Russian Systema and Wing Tsun, and is currently a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Bryce is also a licensed clinical psychologist and currently works as a Behavioral Specialist and psychotherapist at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and in private practice in Philadelphia. If you're interested in taking a class with Bryce, he teaches adult and children's classes at Main Line United Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Ardmore, PA, and children's classes at his home studio in Havertown, PA. You can find Bryce on the web at Mindful Move; email him at bryceacarter@gmail.com (please note the “a” in the middle).

"Worrying is like paying interest on a loan that may never come due." But, is there really no value in worrying? It's a great question and one worth considering. What is the value of worry? Why have we been given this capacity to worry? It turns out that worry can be damaging and a great waste of time and energy. However, there are many instances where worry serves a tremendous purpose; to get us off our butts— to take action! So how do you know which type of worrying is beneficial? There are essentially two types of worry; things you can influence and control and things that you can not. To worry about the weather next week is likely a waste of time and energy. However, when you worry about things that you can influence and it forces you to think and act resourcefully then the worry provides great value. Examine your own worry patterns; when and where you place your time, energy and attention particularly when it comes to things beyond your sphere of influence. The subject than reminds Martin about the old, “Serenity Prayer” that goes something like, “God grant me the serenity to accept the things i can not change. The courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference. There is a reason that is called the serenity prayer— knowing the difference helps one avoid worthless worry and at the same time can bring great peace and serenity. After all, why pay interest on a loan that may never come due?
