Welcome to episode 205 with Dr Ross Ellenhorn, who is a sociologist, psychotherapist and social worker. Dr. Ellenhorn is encouraging mental health professionals to be more present with patients and think outside the box when it comes to treatment methods. With offices in Boston, New York and LA, he offers the types of care that serve and empower anyone who has been diagnosed with psychiatric and substance-use issues and helps them recover outside of hospital, in their own communities. In this episode I chat to Ross about his incredible work, how he began working in the mental health space and how that informed his ground breaking approach to working with so called complex states of mind and mood. We chat about using a human first approach, the medicalisation of the human experience, approaching therapy as improv, the importance of play and curiosity and why human conformity is the illness that gets in the way of being authentic. Ross has spent many years researching change. More specifically why as humans we find it so hard to change, even when staying the same is killing us. We talk about this work; we talk about why we struggle to do things differently and how underpinning all of this is a fear of hope. I never say this lightly, but this is one of the most powerful episodes that I have recorded. If you've spoken to me in person over the last few weeks, I've probably told you about it and I've been taking a deep dive in to Ross' work regularly since we spoke. Last week, I shared eight signs of fearing hope. It's in our best interest to take a look at our lives for signs of fearing hope, because as we gain awareness of where we do that, THEN we're able to stop criticizing ourselves and, if we choose to, work to change. Fear of hope doesn't mean you feel less hopeful - it means you are connecting your sense of self worth with the outcome of your goal: if you achieve it, you take it to mean you're worthy. If you don't, you take it to mean there's something wrong with you. That's why you fear hope, because hope is connected to who you are as a person. People who don't experience fear of hope are able to separate the goal outcome from who they are - the goal and all the possible disappointments are NOT threats to their self worth. They are simply goals for which to strive, chances to grow, and/or learning opportunities. Today I'll be sharing eight tips to overcome fear of hope, from Dr. Ross Ellenhorn's book “How We Change and Ten Reasons We Don't”. As he explains, “Making personal change is all about the risk of authentically approaching your life. The risk is real, because you're being at your most real.” As you learn to move forward through the fear of hope, and manage the gap that your brain doesn't like, you will begin to see your forward progress, and be empowered by it. Whenever we have a goal that includes a personal change in some way - weight loss, behavior change, ways of communicating, parenting style, our role in a relationship… no matter what it is, we are always taking a gamble on ourselves when we are trying to change that thing about ourselves. And gambling means risk - some of us do better with that than others. To make personal changes, your level of hope matters. Believe it or not, there is a state of mind called “fear of hope” that is quite common, and it's important to understand because only as we understand ourselves and why we do the things we do that we are able to begin to change. It explains the natural tension created between when we recognize that where we ARE is different from where we want to BE. Ross is trained as a sociologist, psychotherapist, and social worker and specializes in the integration of psychology and sociology. These two disciplines are typically rigidly separated in academia and as such, psychiatric problems are usually understood -- and treated -- only as psychological phenomena. In contrast, Ross views psychiatric disorders through a unique psychosocial lens. For over 20 years, he has been helping individuals suffering psychiatric symptoms to find the psychological and social means for remaining outside of institutional settings. He is the CEO and founder of Ellenhorn, the first fully-operating intensive hospital diversion and wrap-around program in Massachusetts. Ross also created and led one of the first Programs for Assertive Community Treatment (PACT) teams in the Commonwealth. Dr. Ellenhorn is a published author and his 2007 book, Parasuicidality and Paradox: Breaking Through the Medical Model, addresses psychiatric hospital recidivism and techniques for diverting hospital use. He is a graduate of the UCLA School of Social Welfare and is the first person to receive a joint Ph.D. from the Florence Heller School for Social Welfare Policy and Management and the Department of Sociology at Brandeis University. His new book, published by Harper Collins, and titled “How We Change (and the Ten Reasons Why We Don’t), will come out and May, and addresses many of the issues we’ll discuss today. Three main talking points: 1. Ross speaks about his personal experience of becoming aware of the power of psychological labels and stigma in his own life and how that stigma led to him feeling like he had less control over his own future. 2. Virgil speaks with Ross about how, as a young social worker in mental healthcare, he began to notice that clients, families and colleagues were having conversations about the importance of recovering hope. Ross will tell us about his observations that led him to believe that the recovery of hope is essential to the overall process of recovering from psychiatric symptoms. 3. Virgil and Ross discuss how fear of hope is a concept that exists within and outside of the mental health field and is something that is likely relevant to most of us at some point in our lives. We will ask Ross about his research and the consequent methods he has found to help clients and families overcome their fear of hope.
