Alex is a product designer and engineer who recently quit his job in pursuit of building and growing his online businesses - he has two products on amazon doing alright and a small etsy store. Luke is an ex-architect turned online entrepreneur who started his biggest business 'Van Woof' on this podcast as a 3 week challenge. It makes amazing Dog Portraits and regularly brings in over $1000 a day in revenue, yeah it's official, he won that challenge. If you're thinking about starting a business and desperate for good advice, we're not your guys but we do love talking about business, marketing and yes even seemingly boring shit like packaging and operations. Alex is obsessed with packaging actually. Join us every week. P.s. this is not a long form sales funnel intended to hook you in with our free content, then eventually sell you a course. Our thoughts and opinions are our own and not intended to extract precious cash from your pockets. In fact, we don't even have a website let alone a sales funnel...

EP#42 - The 7 Best Business Books that We Actually Recommend Reading, from Our Combined Twenty Years of Learning

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 31, 2020 62:02

In this episode Luke and I discuss our favourite entrepreneurial books from the last ten years of educating ourselves each in the space. We heavily caveat this episode to say that if you really want to start a business, don't bother reading all or any of these books - better to start actually doing business and get better at that rather than reading the rule book inside and out before getting started. If you are interested in finding out our favourite picks and a summary of what makes them great then this is a good episode for you. If you're too busy and just want the list now, then here it is: 1. Shoe Dog - Phil Knight - The best solo entrepreneur book and a bit of the inspiration behind the title of this podcast, as Phil Knight pretty much embodies the best aspects of an Adventure Capitalist. Top book, more like a movie than an educational book. 2. The Snowball - Warren Buffet. Biography of Warren Buffets journey from selling coke and pepsi tops to buying out companies and stripping out their assets and making the last few bucks having fired the entire workforce. That little guy has got some pretty ruthless stories in the vault, but also tells you how you could see business as a functional capital creating machine rather than people's livelihoods. He's currently the 4th richest person on earth so it's packed with value, he's also very straightforward in his advice in general. If you want to learn the fundamentals of value investing this is a good read. 3. The Personal MBA - Josh Kaufman. This is like a cheat sheet for an entire MBA course, good set of theory and principals for business. Very academic and a little bit dry but Alex read this back to back and got a lot of value from it. 4. Atomic Habits - James Clear. How can you build new productive habits and break bad ones. Worth a read and could spell the difference between building a future you want and shrugging off elements of your personality you'd rather not live with. 5. Critical Business Skills for Success: the Great Courses. (Audible) This is a 36 hour long lecture series and covers everything from Marketing, Strategy, Operations, Finance and Accounting for people wanting to learn the full suite of what it takes to run a business. Honestly, Alex listened to most of this as he was driving to and from work, in hindsight he should have been taking action at this point and not just theorising all day long. (his words)6. 4 Hour Work Week - Tim Ferris. It's a classic, if you haven't read this it's worth a quick read. All about how outsourcing can build the fundamentals for a life without work. He's the ultimate work-life balance guru and it's inspiring stuff. 7. 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. An old one with some still very relevant and good advice. Enjoy. We're brought to you by onthejobmarketing.comIf you're a tradesperson, you need a website and marketing to get more customers. Alex and Luke breakdown the worst things that have happened to then over the years. At the end they talk about why they do sell on Amazon....The reasons why you shouldn't sell on Amazon FBA -They charge you higher fees than any other platform and aren't that clear with when you get charged.Organic Ranking - You are at the mercy of the algorithm. You are competing with hundreds of other sellers for the top 10 positions, and the competition is fierce. It's sold as a get rich quick scheme and not a proper business model. In reality you have to invest thousands or tens of thousands into stock before even knowing if a product will be successfulExpectations vs reality of creating products and packaging is difficult. Alex is a seasoned product designer with over 10 years experience, and even he still encounters issues. You can't necessarily control the review or sentiment created by customers. The review average seems arbitrary that's set by amazon. A bad review can destroy a products sales. The competition can change very quickly and your brand positioning is unstable.Your listing can get hijacked by fraudsters.Amazon customer service for sellers is one of the worst customer services for businesses.Amazon has a number of programs for sellers, and not all of them work how you expect them to, and it's hard to have a direct conversation with anyone working in those departments We're brought to you by onthejobmarketing.comIf you're a tradesperson, you need a website and marketing to get more customers. We are not experts on the subject of economics or politics, we just think it's important and fun to discuss subjects like this, and we hope that we give a good argument to why capitalism is good for everyone. The main points we go over in this episode -Fosters innovation and continuous incremental improvementAllows at the higher end of the spectrum, the ability to gain financial freedomActually creates a vacuum where arts and creativity are appreciated, outside of a financial reward incentive.Capitalism is pretty much dog eat dog. Generates huge income for governments to be able to pay for services. It can help people from lower economic backgrounds to change their situations. You are inevitably going to see extremes - the very rich and the very poor - what do we do about homeless, people who aren't able to compete etc. Capitalism doesn't mean right wing - the government takes a cut and it can operate in a way that is supportive of societal goals. Some definitions -CAPITALISM - An economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state.SOCIALISM - a political and economic theory of social organization which advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole.COMMUNISM - a theory or system of social organization in which all property is owned by the community and each person contributes and receives according to their ability and needs. We're brought to you by onthejobmarketing.comIf you're a tradesperson, you need a website and marketing to get more customers. Without location holding people back, they're free to roam the world and capitalise on countries with much lower living costs. We cover the following questions:1. If cities are no longer the place to find work, what happens to cities property prices?2. What happens when there is much more competition for remote jobs online?3. How will you stand out in a more competitive job market?4. What skills should you be learning now to make sure you stay ahead?Talking Points:Work will shift to remote working - Corona virus forced companies to make people work from home. The experiment in working from home has proved there is no need for office based working 5 days per week - this means it's worth investing in lower economic, beautiful countries as they will become richer and more sought after locations.Property prices will drop in cities and go up in more rural, more scenic locations. Commercial lets and office space will drop in value. Career changes will happen more frequentlyAutomation will destroy a lot of jobs - truckers, delivery drivers, checkout workers, but also create a lot more jobs. Opened up the service based work globally like the manufacturing industry. Lower level jobs will become higher in competition, higher level strategic roles will be difficult to fill.Innovation hubs will no longer be localised - goodbye silicon valley, it will be based on the cloud. This means your cv, personal brand, website needs to be easily accessible from these companies. Google encouraging working remotely, as is Yahoo. This may mean slightly higher competition for roles as you're now competing worldwide. How does this affect wages? This means that more countries around the world's gdp will become more equalised.Higher education will be online only, less and less people will be educated in physical university buildings and more people will opt to take accredited online coursesWe're brought to you by onthejobmarketing.comIf you're a tradesperson, you need a website and marketing to get more customers.
