193: The POWER of a NAP Sleep inertia in the form of a short nap will add years to your life and life to your years. Today's topic is the POWER NAP Today's Lexi: Συνήθειa – Synítheia – Habit In Today's Episode: My father, Tasso, God rest his soul, lived to the age of 90. He naturally abided by a healthy, Mediterranean lifestyle. All my life I was struck by his habits; slow chewing of whole foods, moving his own body to lift, move, and carry things. His zest for life was evident as he was always ready for Kefi time. Although all of that was part of his regular routine: the one staple he always participated in without fail was to nap. He laid down for 30 to 60 minutes every single day. Tassos' Good Health/Nap scenerio is living proof that resting is good for the mind and body, but there is also scienticfic research to support this healthy habit. . Napping, Nani, siesta, la somme, pisolino and drzemki – however you refer to it, is a nutrient for the body and the mind Kiki shares more on the benefits of a POWER NAP during today's episode. A power nap is a short sleep which is long enough to give an energy boost, but not so long that you enter deep sleep. The term was coined by American social psychologist James Maas, a professor at Cornell University. Science shows that power naps could be of benefit to employees in the workplace, where efficiency is key. Sometimes, a power nap lasts just a few seconds, in which case it's referred to as a microsleep. Dali would do it in a seated position, holding a spoon between his fingers. When he started to fall asleep, his grip on the spoon would loosen and the sound of the spoon hitting the floor would of course wake him up immediately. So I can just fall asleep at my desk and my boss will be OK about it? Will I become smarter if I have a power nap every day after my lunch break? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! „Everybody says I love you“ - ein grandioser Filmtitel. Having trouble getting thru the day? Sometimes a power nap isn't enough. The latest trend is the "Nappuccino!" And sleep experts are saying there might be something to it.
An afternoon nap can be refreshing, but experts say it also can help you at work or with other activities. Research shows that so-called power naps lasting less than 30 minutes allow the brain to rest in a way that makes you more alert. Geneviève Albouy, PhD, Associate Professor and Co-Director of Graduate Studies, in the Department of Health & Kinesiology at the University of Utah's College of Health joins the show to share her insight on what the perfect power nap looks like and the benefits that can come with it.
SummaryIn this conversation, Jason and Mindy discuss various topics including trouble sleeping, weight loss drugs, online trolling, different types of naps, and what their friends and family would assume they had done if they were arrested. They also share an inspirational quote and mention their upcoming merchandise on their website.https://www.lowtreestudios.com/https://www.youtube.com/@lowtreestudiosWeight-loss drugs are taking a big bite out of the food business. People taking meds such as Ozempic, Rybelsus and Wegovy — originally developed to treat diabetes — spend less on groceries and have healthier choices in their basket, according to a new study on shopping behaviors. Analytics firm Grocery Doppio found that semaglutide-takers purchase 47% fewer baked goods; 28% less soda and sugary beverages; 17% less booze; and 13% less processed foods. On the other hand, they are buying more healthy foods, thanks reduced appetites and changes to their taste buds. A new study published in Behavioral Sciences determined that those with dark humor are more likely to engage in online trolling. And what's more, they don't appreciate it when their antagonism turned back on them. In other words, trolls don't like being trolled. Online trolling is a social behavior characterized by deception and disruption. A troll tries to incite controversy simply to watch people turn against each other. And now, the doozy: The researchers' findings also indicate that people who possess a dark sense of humor are more likely to demonstrate sadism and Machiavellianism (being cunning, scheming, and unscrupulous).NAP RAPPIN':It's Tuesday. Maybe you were up late watching Olympics or your favorite show. Sounds like a good excuse for a nice nap, right after work. Here are 4 types of naps, and how to choose which one is perfect for you…“Power Nap.” For most, a classic “power nap” of 10-20 minutes in the early afternoon will help them shake off that post-lunch blahs, and feel OK for the rest of the day. This is great if you often feel lethargic for a few hours in the afternoon.“Coffee Nap”: If a short nap isn't much help, try this. Drink a cup of coffee quickly, then lie down. It takes caffeine about 10 minutes to affect you, and about 45 minutes to reach peak concentration in your blood. That means you can get a power nap in, then wake up just as the caffeine hits, giving you an amplified sense of sharpness and clarity. “Convenient Nap”: Scheduling a nap is great, but what if your schedule is all over the place? An imperfect nap is better than no nap at all. Nap when the baby is sleeping, while on public transit, or during your lunch hour. “Performance Nap”: If you have a stressful or physically demanding task coming up, such as a presentation or a marathon, a short nap a few hours ahead of time can definitely boost your performance.

Chinstrap penguins may be contenders for the title of “world's greatest power nappers.” A recent study found that penguins that are watching over their eggs or chicks nod off more than 10,000 times a day—for an average of just four seconds per nap.Chinstrap penguins live in Antarctica and nearby islands. Adults stand about two and a half feet tall, and weigh up to 10 or 12 pounds. They get their name from a thin line of black feathers that look like a chinstrap. They return to their nesting grounds every October or November—hundreds of thousands or more in a single colony.Males and females take turns watching over the nests while the other spend days fishing. Other chinstraps may try to steal the pebbles from their nests. And birds known as brown skuas try to grab the eggs or chicks. So nest-sitting is a full-time chore.Researchers studied 14 adults on King George Island, off the coast of Antarctica. They used sensors to record the penguins' brain activity. They also logged location, motion, and other data. The instruments revealed that nesting parents frequently nodded off, then quickly popped back awake. The brain monitors showed that the parents were catching frequent naps—sometimes with only one side of the brain, sometimes the whole thing. The naps added up to 11 hours a day. That behavior wouldn't be healthy for most animals. But it didn't seem to bother the chinstrap penguins. Instead, it helped them protect their budding young families.
This is episode 3 of a 6-part special series on sleep with Dr. Matthew Walker, Ph.D., a professor of neuroscience and psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, and leading public educator about the role of sleep in health, disease and performance. We explain how our sleep architecture changes as we age. We also cover how childhood development and aging affect sleep biology and needs. We also discuss whether polyphasic sleep (multiple short sleep periods) is beneficial. Then, we discuss naps, including their positive benefits, individual variability, those who should not nap, and alternative rest states like non-sleep deep rest. Dr. Walker shares protocols to optimize nap duration, timing and effectiveness. We also explore the effects of caffeine on sleep and other health aspects, as well as the optimal timing for caffeine intake. This episode describes many actionable science-based tools for optimizing sleep, naps and caffeine use for better health and performance.

It's Tuesday, December 5th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson Nigeria imprisoned woman who condemned the martyrdom of a Christian Incredibly, a mother of five children has been languishing in a Nigerian prison for allegedly sharing a video in which she condemned the lynching of Deborah Yakubu — a student who was murdered and set on fire by her classmates -- for sharing her Christian faith. The imprisoned woman, Rhoda Jatau, was almost killed by another mob for sharing the video on What's App. She was subsequently arrested, and has been imprisoned now for the last 18 months. The United Nations has condemned the Nigerian government's treatment of the case in a letter signed by the Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief and the vice-chair of communications of the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention. The representatives noted that “Both cases appear to be related to the legitimate exercise of the right to freedom of thought, conscience, and religion and of freedom of opinion and expression. Both are members of a religious minority.” Pray for Rhoda's immediate release. ISIS killed 4, wounded 54 in Philippines Four people were killed in an Islamic terrorist attack in the Philippines on Sunday. According to the Manila Times, 302 people were gathered when an explosion ripped through the auditorium, wounding 54 and killing 4. ISIS, a Muslim terrorist group, has claimed responsibility for the attack on these people made in the image of God. Argentina's libertarian president-elect pulls out of BRICS Argentina's president-elect, Javier Milei, has called off Argentina's participation in BRICS — the international, intergovernmental organization made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, reports Voice of America. This comes despite warnings from China's foreign ministry -- produced in a news briefing a week ago, where Mao Ning, the Communist spokeswoman, announced, “It would be a grave mistake if Argentina were to cut off ties with great powers such as China or Brazil. China is Argentina's important trade partner.” Argentina's new president takes office in five days. Milei has signaled closer ties with the United States. Russia banned homosexual propaganda In other international news, Russia's Supreme Court has ruled last week that the “international LGBTQ movement is in violation of Russia's Law on Countering Extremism.” Last December, the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, signed a bill into law banning LGBTQ propaganda, suggesting that homosexual relationships are “normal.” Siberia hit 69 degrees below 0 You think it's cold where you live? The Sakha Republic in Siberia hit negative 69 degrees Fahrenheit yesterday, while Moscow and other parts of Russia were clobbered with record snowfall. Biden blocks school lunch funding if they don't push LHBT propaganda Here in America, the Biden administration is blocking school lunch funding to schools that will not abide by its new pro-homosexual guidelines. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is redefining sexual discrimination to include “discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.” Senate Republicans have already attempted to overturn the new requirements, but failed by a 47-50 vote. The new requirements will most likely be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court for a final decision. Time Magazine's Person of the Year short list Dictators and pop stars made the list of Time Magazine Person of the Year finalists. Xi Jinping, Taylor Swift, Barbie, King Charles III, Vladimir Putin, the people who have prosecuted Trump, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, all made the list. The Psalmist cries out in Psalm 12:1-2. “Help, Lord, for the godly man ceases! For the faithful disappear from among the sons of men. They speak idly everyone with his neighbor; With flattering lips and a double heart they speak.” German Catholic Church more liberal than U.S. Catholic Church The New York Times compares the liberal German Catholic Church with the U.S. more conservative Catholic Church on issues like abortion and LGBT. Germany's liberal clergy is aging, with “only 48 new seminarians in Germany in 2022, for a church that still serves 21 million self-identified Catholics.” On the other hand, the U.S. Catholic Church counts 3,000 seminarians for 73 million Catholics — most of whom are conservative on social issues. Construction of manufacturing plants up due to promised gov't subsidies Construction spending on manufacturing plants has almost tripled since 2021 — largely due to a huge government subsidy promised to manufacturing industries to the tune of $52 billion. The industry sectors affected are semiconductors and Electric Vehicle battery manufacturers. At the same time, U.S. factory orders have declined 3.6% month over month — the largest drop since April 2020, during the COVID crisis. Penguin power naps And finally, talk about power naps. Scientists have discovered that God made penguins with the ability to sleep at the drop of a hat. A recent study found that penguins take thousands of naps a day, averaging 4 seconds each, and amounting to a total of 11 hours of sleep per day. Psalm 104:24 says, “O Lord, how manifold are Your works! In wisdom, You have made them all. The Earth is full of Your possessions.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Tuesday, December 5th in the year of our Lord 2023.
