On this week's Random Encounter, we're playing an updated classic, a spin-off of a modern classic, and talking about the weirdest game I have heard of in a long time!First up, Mark is taking off his nostalgia goggles to give the recent remaster of the CRPG classic Neverwinter Nights 2 an updated look! Neverwinter Nights 2: Enhanced Edition follows many other enhanced editions of classic CRPGs like Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale. Does this new version live up to his fond memories of the original? Then, Sean is here to chat about the newest entry in the AI: The Somnium Files series, No Sleep For Kaname Date – From AI: The Somnium Files. Does it live up to his expectations of the series so far, or did it lull him to sleep unlike poor Kaname Date?Oh, and then we talk about an insane horse-girl-gacha game for a while because I honestly can't believe this thing exists! Neste episódio, recebemos novamente Felipe Pepe, autor e organizador de The CRPG Book: A Guide to Computer Role-Playing Games, que voltou a nossa mesa virtual para conversar sobre o livro de Brendan Keogh, The Videogame Industry Does Not Exist: Why We Should Think Beyond Commercial Game Production.

After 5 years, MzMedooza (formerly CardiaPlays) returns to the podcast! We get to catch up and talk about what has been going on the past 5 years! After catching up, we talk about her experience playing cRPGs (also known as ISO RPG's) like Baldur's Gate and Pathfinder: Kingmaker, and her switch to games like Elder Scrolls Online, Helldivers 2, and the original Fallout games. From there, MzMedooza talks about her change and experiences on Twitch and going hand in hand with mental health. We have an extended discussion about streaming and the need for mental health and taking time away from streaming.
During the first few months after Baldur's Gate 3 released, I heard a similar refrain coming from my friends and people on social media- people would say something like "I normally don't play RPGs like this, but I love Baldur's Gate 3! Flash forward 6 months and now Baldur's Gate 3 has swept the major award shows and broken into the top 10 most-played list on Steam. How did a game from such a niche genre break into the mainstream? In order to answer this, I invited CRPG historian and writer/editor for The CRPG Book, Felipe Pepe, on to the show to talk about all of this. Topics discussed include: * How he got into RPGs and why we love the genre * The state and role of CRPGs through history, including discussions about Fallout, Ultima, Wizardry, Baldur's Gate, Pillars of Eternity, Morrowind, Arx Fatalis, Skyrim, Disco Elysium, Wasteland, The Gold Box Series, Shadowrun, Dragon Age, and many more games. * Why Baldur's Gate 3 broke out in such a big way * Recommendations for other CRPGs through history for new fans of the genre * The CRPG Book project You can follow Felipe on Twitter (https://twitter.com/felipepepe), check out the free PDF version (https://crpgbook.wordpress.com/) of The CRPG Book, or purchase a wonderful hardcover edition (https://www.bitmapbooks.com/products/the-crpg-book-a-guide-to-computer-role-playing-games) from Bitmap Books (all author's proceeds to go charity)! Judge Dredd satirizes fascism but can tell multi-layered stories. Godzilla finally wins an Oscar. Godzilla as a metaphor. The essence of the Punisher. It's been a while, but Shane rants a bit (and David loves it). The Krakoan X-Men scare Shane and David's ready for the era to move on. Current Beast makes David pine for Dark Beast. Three Jokers?? The 80s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles RPG and real-life urban ninja action. Shane's defining Han Solo moments. David recommends Dreamsnake by Vonda N. McIntyre. A key to being an adult is being able to separate the creator from the creation in terms of enjoying entertainment. What D&D-related incident made a young Shane cry? On this week's Chat Log, Mollie and Lauren talk with Harvey Randall about one of the most divisive topics: categorizing games. Sure, things are easy when we're just talking RPGs—unless it's ARPGs versus action RPGs. Don't even get us started on cRPGs. What about the Metroidvanias and the Roguelikes—and are Soulslikes a real genre too?

Featuring: Ashgar, Belghast, Grace, and Tamrielo We have a pretty small group this week as we are down a Kodra, Ammo, and Thalen for various assorted reasons. We start off the show with Tam talking about Viewfinder a bit which winds its way to Bel talking about the coin pusher indie Clockwork Owl. Grace has been playing a lot of XVI and we talk about the Giant Kaiju Battles that take place when two Eikons fight. Bel got into the Palia beta this week and he talks a bit about what feels like Stardew Valley the MMO. Many of us stopped playing whatever we were playing this week with the launch of Baldur's Gate III, so we spend a bit talking about that game in largely general terms. This leads to a discussion of JRPGs and CRPGs and how they are generally telling stories in very different ways. We close out with a few topics and Bel shares that he no longer has concerns about Path of Exile II. Fallout: New Vegas is a true classic of the modern RPG. It perfectly bridges the gap between the dense, if unfriendly CRPGS of the 90's and early 2000's, with the modern experience of games such as 'The Witcher 3' Join us for the first half of our conversation as we break down how this game presents its systems and tells its stories, as well as discuss some of our favorite quests and concepts. This week I'm joined by my great friend Dave Jackson to talk about one of the coolest CRPGS to ever come out of Estonia! (I challenge any of my listeners to name more games than this which actually originated from that country) Dave gives us a behind-the-scenes look at his show, Tales from the Backlog, and gives our viewers a peek into his gaming and content approach. This is a special one folks. You're going to hear from me about this game again. Without a doubt this is already in my GOTY contention. From it's early roots in 1990s CRPGs to the modern open-world incarnations, Fallout has been a staple of the video gaming industry for decades. On this episode of Psitanium Mine, we're going to look at the origins of Fallout from the time it diverged from Wasteland, the time that Interplay spent making CRPGs and other experimental projects, the Bethesda era, cancelled entries in the series and what to expect in the future. Also, what makes the series so iconic and influential?

Them Sweet Boys get whacko for THAC0 when they travel to the Sword Coast in this very of its time CRPG. We discuss our relationship with CRPGs, Dungeons and Dragons, and of course this very foundational title from Bioware. While this game didn't grab us like we'd hope it would, it is still an interesting game to talk about.

ARPGs, CRPGs, JRPGs, oh my! We talk about a bunch of RPGs including the newly released Fallout-like first-person RPG, The Outer Worlds. Death Stranding's getting a PC release, Blizzcon's going to be interesting and the Playstation 4 is doing pretty OK.
October marks the release of a bunch of old CRPGs ported onto Switch, and the panel shares their opinion on whether they are worth playing. After that, they discuss some of their favourite CRPGs and debate on whether we'll ever see Final Fantasy XVI.
[Class Close-up: Cleric](https://dwarves.podiant.co/e/36b2cb69bbed4c/) (episode 43) ### What is a class? (1:50) A place in the world (a “job”), a role in the party, and mechanics to match. “Relationship”, the main *connection* that the class is about, what their personal conflicts usually revolve around. ### Classes as relationships (3:30) > Barbarian: Their own emotions > Bard: The audience > Cleric: The divine > Druid: Nature > Fighter: Prowess > Monk: Discipline > Paladin: Duty > Ranger: Surviva--- I mean, environment > Rogue: The situation > Sorcerer: Their lineage > Warlock: Their patron > Wizard: Power ### What can we do with this? (24:00) It simultaneously lets you see the main focus of a class while at the same time exploring ways to enhance or expand on the basic idea. * Deepen - Create a more meaningful relationship * Sideways - Create new relationships, with things that are related to the topic or surround it * Opposition Create new relationships with opposing topics/concepts * Severed relationship - Either as a backstory, or an interesting occurrence during your game ### Tools to help you develop this (32:40) Consider these points: Is it external/internal? How can you switch this around? Is it interactive/passive? How can you switch this around? ### Summary (35:35) ### Taking the load off (37:30) Uri - Swashbuckler is lost. Eran - Putting some time into CRPGs, increased my involvement with City of Mist. ----- Email us at show@dwarfcast.net with questions, topic suggestions, and comments on this episode. Hey everyone! I have a new podcast episode up. I wish it was a little bit more organized; I might write an article later on that presents these ideas in a more coherent and organized way, but with that out of the way, I have a lot of things to say about a certain kind … Some thoughts about CRPGs, and why I want to make one Read More »
