The World of Eora: an Avowed & Pillars of Eternity Lore Podcast
NO SPOILERS :) The World of Eora is a news & lore podcast about the fantasy setting created by Obsidian Entertainment for their cRPG series, Pillars of Eternity, and their upcoming action RPG: Avowed. This week's episode discusses the major city settlement in the second Pillars game (Deadfire), "Neketaka". We look at the city overall, with some of its history and culture, before doing a brief dive into each of the city districts. Finally, we top the episode off with a look at some ancient ruins beneath the city and what that might imply for the Huana peoples living in the region. worldofeora@gmail.com @worldofeora ko-fi.com/worldofeora
The World of Eora: an Avowed & Pillars of Eternity Lore Podcast
The World of Eora is a news & lore podcast about the fantasy setting created by Obsidian Entertainment for their cRPG series, Pillars of Eternity, and their upcoming action RPG: Avowed. Warning: Major spoilers for Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire in this episode. This week's episode discusses the lost city of Ukaizo, which is an ancient city of mythology and legend in the Huana culture (the tribes that live in the Deadfire Archipelago, the setting for the second Pillars game). What Ukaizo represents to Huana (but also the other factions in play during Deadfire) is more than just a city with gold. worldofeora@gmail.com @worldofeora ko-fi.com/worldofeora

NOTE: there's an important question near the end of the episode (in the 44min area) that I'd like some feedback on. This week's episode was very randomly decided upon, but the bottom line is: in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire there are some sea shanties you hear sung when sailing throughout the Deadfire Archipelago (the setting for that game). While the lyrics to these songs aren't plumbing the depths of esoteric lore, they do allude to ideas and moments that occur within this fantasy world; and I think it's writing like that which really gives life to a fictional world. So, in honour of that, let's take a look at the lyrical content for the Sea Shanties from the second Pillars of Eternity game... worldofeora@gmail.com @worldofeora ko-fi.com/worldofeora

Josh Sawyer of Obsidian Entertainment has one of the more robust CVs in game design: Iceland Dale 1 and 2, Fallout: New Vegas, Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2 and most recently, the highly-praised historical role-playing game Pentiment. We focus on various aspects of the production of Pentiment: avoiding burnout, drawing from meticulously-researched historical material, dealing with religion (both as a nexus of temporal power and a daily spiritual presence in peoples lives), as well as covering gameplay and narrative aspects. 00:00:00 - Introduction 00:01:00 - Life post-Pentiment, comparison with the aftermath of Pillars of Eternity: Deadfire 00:04:20 - Managing production stress and preventing burnout, for individuals and for teams 00:06:50 - Balancing personal vision, and the requirements of publishers. For their next project, team morale will be the number one priority. 00:08:30 - Allowing team members to play to their strengths. 00:11:30 - Dealing with history and religion as opposed to fantasy worlds. Engaging with "microhistory" as opposed to top-down, ruler-first historiography; examining the daily lives of the people of an era. 00:16:56 - The difference between taking inspiration from history and literature, as opposed to games that draw primarily on other games. 00:21:26 - Religion in Pentiment: "I consider myself an atheist but, like, who cares." The personal nature of characters' engagements with God, the Devil, spirituality, and the church as a political entity. 00:31:41 - The politics of power in Pentiment 00:43:02 - Gameplay and narrative consequences in Pentiment - major (plot-altering) and minor (aesthetic, dramatic, personal) 00:50:50 - Contrasting this kind of design in Pentiment with consequences in the final act of Deadfire 00:51:50 - Dramatic immersion in Pentiment: keeping the dramatic intimacy through rituals and role-playing mini-games.

The World of Eora: an Avowed & Pillars of Eternity Lore Podcast
The World of Eora is a news/lore podcast about the world and development of Obsidian Entertainment's Pillars of Eternity series and their upcoming release: AVOWED. Today's episode continues on-track with our recent episodes in looking at factions featured in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire. This time we will be talking about the Vailian Trading Company, a lawless mercantile group formed for the explicit purposes of making the Vailian Republics rich - by any means necessary. You interact with this faction mainly in Deadfire as the company tries to get a stranglehold on the frontier region of the Deadfire Archipelago. worldofeora@gmail.com @worldofeora
The World of Eora: an Avowed & Pillars of Eternity Lore Podcast
"The World of Eora" is a news/lore podcast about the fantasy world used in Obsidian Entertainment's Pillars of Eternity series, as well as their upcoming release: AVOWED. Today's episode focuses on the recent history of the setting for second Pillars game, "Deadfire" (short for "Deadfire Archipelago"). Taking place only three years after the events of the first game, but in a far off smattering of islands. Filled with island tribes, and new factions from faraway empires, the events that occur in the Deadfire show both the breadth and depth of Obsidian writing. As far as the world's lore is concerned, it shows the events of some of the world's major players, and could affect Avowed, depending on when it takes place in relation to Pillars II. worldofeora@gmail.com @worldofeora
The World of Eora: an Avowed & Pillars of Eternity Lore Podcast
The World of Eora is a news/lore podcast about the fantasy world found in Obsidian Entertainment's Pillars of Eternity series, and their upcoming release: Avowed. Today's short bonus episode dives (pun intended) into the lore of the art/magic of Watershaping, as well as the Watershaper's Guild. All found within the second Pillars game: DEADFIRE. Note: to those Pillars II lore experts I omitted a spoiler-y aspect to today's lore, so if you're wondering why I don't mentioned [Redacted], that's why. This episode is more focused about the art of Watershaping itself, and the forms that Periki, Guildmaster of the Watershapers, teaches. worldofeora@gmail.com @worldofeora on twitter

The World of Eora: an Avowed & Pillars of Eternity Lore Podcast
The World of Eora is a news/lore podcast about Obsidian Entertainment's original fantasy setting, EORA, used in Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, as well as their upcoming release: AVOWED. Today's episode comes nearly a week late (sorry, #NewDad), but in it we take a look at the introduction to the Deadfire Archipelago (the setting for Pillars II) as read in the official Guidebook for the game. We learn about the importance of Luminous Adra, we overview the geography of the region; as well we stop to read about some metal_AF creatures that exist in the LORE (but not necessarily the game). I wonder what, if anything, from the Deadfire will be carried over into Avowed? worldofeora@gmail.com @worldofeora

Happy New Year one and all! To celebrate yet another new beginning, we've brought back old guests Greg (Creative Director of Supergiant Games, and writer of Bastion, Transistor, Pyre, and Hades) and Kate (Narrative designer on Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, all of its DLC, the Outer Worlds, and was a narrative co-lead on The Outer Worlds: Peril on Gorgon) to chat with us about working from home during COVID, work/life balance, Early Access, the keys to writing memorable shopkeepers, the beauty of em dashes, themes that they gravitate towards, working with ensemble casts, what kept them up at night the most on the last game they worked on, murder hobos, games being adapted into film/TV, collaborating with other disciplines more closely, and more, more, more! Our Guests on the InternetGreg's TwitterKate's Twitter and InstagramStuff We Talked AboutHadesThe Outer Worlds (and its DLC: Peril on Gorgon)PyreTransistorBastionResident Evil 4 (specifically this guy)UltimaNetflix's Castlevania showAnnihilation (book and movie)InsideHouse of Leaves by Mark Z. Our two adventurers set sail through the Deadfire archipelago, hot on the heels of the keep-stomping, giant-stealing, adra-devouring God, Eothas, in Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire. But with Ben playing as impatient neutral and Tao as dignified evil, can they get along? They spill secrets of their raunchy (on-screen) romances, question the rising trend of maritime oriented games, and probe the merits and disadvantages of diving too deep into the ‘role playing’ in role playing games. Major spoilers from around half way, also spoilers for the original Pillars of Eternity. Content Warning: PEGI 15. Strong language. Slavery, colonialism, backstabbing, and ribald crewmates bragging in explicit detail of sexual conquests. Clarifications: This game was released in May 2018. The first one was released in March 2015. The party member is correctly identified by Tao as Pallegina. The original soundtrack is composed by Justin Bell who also scored the first game. The original sea shanties were written and performed by Nils Brown and Carrie Shaw. “Stanley’s Parable” is a reference to The Stanley Parable game. In the words of its designers: “an experimental narrative-driven first person game...an exploration of choice, freedom, storytelling and reality.” Netflix has not officially cancelled Mindhunter, but show director David Fincher has strongly implied it will be discontinued. This week we play the sequel to the award-winner RPG by Obsidian Entertainment, Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire. This game changes the scenery to a series of archipelagos where you and your team follow an exciting and deep story from island to island. We also play the official release of The Forest with the help of one of our listeners Scott. He joins us to talk about why The Forest is a survival game you need to play. In our news, we focus heavily on the Red Dead Redemption 2 trailer which showcases some new story bits as well as some surprises of who and what we see from the original game. In other news, Boston Uprising is on fire in the Overwatch League and TotalBiscuit (aka the Cynical Brit) is retiring due to his health. Our discussion this week is all about the rise of Fortnite. It's huge, there's no doubt about that, and we dive deep into it's slow start and rise to the top. PUBG definitely has a competitor on its hands and Fortnite shows no signs of slowing down.
