On this week's Chat Log, Mollie and Lauren talk with Harvey Randall about one of the most divisive topics: categorizing games. Sure, things are easy when we're just talking RPGs—unless it's ARPGs versus action RPGs. Don't even get us started on cRPGs. What about the Metroidvanias and the Roguelikes—and are Soulslikes a real genre too?
Get bonus episodes on Patreon! You guys weren't kidding, Path of Exile is ENORMOUS. The locations are boundless, the enemy variety is staggering, and the character customization is nothing short of incredible. But the bigger this game gets, the more there is to miss out on. In this episode we consider the idea that there is no one right way to play a game. It's all up to you – how much you engage with the story, the choice to use build guides, the decision to play end game content at all – these sprawling ARPGs can be whatever you want them to be. Featuring: Ammosart, Ashgar, Belghast, Kodra, Tamrielo, and Thalen Hey Folks! We start off with a topic that has been bumped for time a few weeks in row as we discuss how complex video games can stick the landing with their denouement. Bel has been playing Alan Wake 2 and talks about how Remedy finally has achieved seamless integration of FMV and rendered gameplay. We talked a bit about Risk of Rain 2 and the buildcraft surrounding the game. Kodra has officially gone further in Path of Exile than the rest of us and talks about his adventures in bossing. We wrap up the show discussing how Path of Exile does a poor job of telling its story in spite of actually having a very good one compared to other ARPGs. Topics Discussed: The Ending Payoffs for Complex Games How to stick the landing Alan Wake 2 is Great Risk of Rain 2 Buildcraft Kodra Kills Against the Bosses ARPGs attempting to tell stories

EP 56 Twitch BANS Gambling Sites & Are We Headed Into A Recession? Follow DIVIJ: https://instagram.com/divijvaswani Follow Christian: https://www.instagram.com/christianyi_/ Email/Business: Divij@DivisionMedia.Co The #1 Podcast In The World, And It's A Fact. Vlogging personality who is widely known for his SnewJ YouTube channel. He has gained popularity there for his fitness, motor, and lifestyle vlog entries. Jake Paul vs. Anderson Silva is an upcoming professional boxing contest between Jake Paul and Anderson Silva. In a recent policy update, Twitch expanded upon its gambling ban by adding an addendum that websites with supposed consumer protections—such as waiting periods, age verification systems, and free social versions—will also be banned if they host gambling content and are unlicensed in the U.S. or other regions. On Sept. 20, Twitch addressed the issue of gambling on the livestreaming website after months of heated discourse among viewers and streamers alike. The platform stated its intention to prohibit some forms of gambling, including slots, roulette, and dice games, though notably retaining sports betting as an accepted form of gambling. Now officially taking effect as of Oct. 18, Twitch clarified today that this ban extends to all websites regardless of supposed consumer protections. We are tightening our rules to also prohibit any streaming of listed sites that contain slots, roulette, and dice games and are unlicensed in the U.S. or other jurisdictions that offer consumer protections, like deposit limits, waiting periods, age verification systems,” Twitch said. The streaming platform reiterated that referral codes to such websites will remain prohibited and link sharing to specific gambling websites barred from streaming will also not be allowed in chat. The website emphasized that its sweeping ban of specific gambling forms will include “free social versions” of gambling websites that allow users to gamble without actual money. Though Twitch has named several specific websites that have aggressively partnered with some of the platform's top creators, it will likely add more to the growing list as the websites become known. Effective today, Twitch will give offending streamers a grace period by issuing initial warnings before applying suspensions to violating content creators. While there's certainly no shortage of ARPGs available on digital platforms, LINE Games' recently released UNDECEMBER offers something unique to the genre: complete class freedom. While other titles will task you with picking either a starting class or sticking with a very specific path of progression, UNDECEMBER eschews that by allowing players to determine their own destiny in its dark fantasy world. Right from the starting moments, you'll be given a variety of different weapon types with no prerequisites to wield them. While many may opt for the melee-based sword to get to grips with UNDECEMBER's flow and combat, you're not locked to that decision at any point. If you feel like switching to a bow or magic staff, you can do it at your leisure. In other games, specific skill points will dictate which playstyle you'll stick with, but UNDECEMBER is different. Your intelligence stat still garners your overall mana, but leveling up strength will increase the potency of your magic spells. Not content to let intelligence be only magic-related, putting levels into that stat increases your overall ability to dodge incoming attacks. There's a nice balance between specificity and general usefulness that encourages players to top up all of their stats instead of focusing solely on one.

Well... Here it is. The final showdown before the semi-finals. We suspect that, regardless of the outcome, someone is walking away from this one less than thrilled. Will it be the grandpappy of ARPGs or the definitive life simulator that moves on to greater glory? Only one way to find out!

Episode 3: A Moment of Zen Life is stressful. Games shouldn't have to be. That is why we have chosen six games that we feel help us escape from the hustle and bustle of the real world and allow us to relax. Today's criteria are: games on the go, games to pay after a long days' work, and games that we feel have an overall relaxing asthetic. Crian's Picks https://ac-pocketcamp.com/en-US (Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp (game on the go)) For those who can't get enough Animal Crossing (or those who don't have a Switch), this can help fill that hole in your life. Available for android and iOS, this game will take you on peaceful camp in the woods. And for those of you who do have a switch, you can link your account and grab benefits for the main game. https://civilization.com/ (Civilization VI (after a long, hard day)) Is your brain fried? the last thing you need is fast paced gameplay. Thankfully, Civilization VI (a.k.a Civ 6) has you covered. Pick your civilization so you can start from the stone age and work your way through history into the future. Help your people expand their territory, make allies, make enemies, and create your very own wonders of the world. Multiple victory conditions also make this a great game for warhawks and pacifists alike. Finally, a game where we can talk about religion and politics in (relatively) polite company. https://www.nomanssky.com/ (No Man's Sky (asthetic)) Boldly going where no man has gone before, No Man's Sky will see you exploring the stars in a way no other game has done before. Originally earning its share of controversy, the latest update, Origin, delivers on many of the promises we've been waiting to see come to fruition. Hop from planet to planet building a network of outposts, engage in dogfights in space, and build your own fleet to travel the stars. What do you call a sandbox in zero-G? Adam's Picks https://nonogram.com/ (Nonogram (game on the go)) If you enjoy logic puzzles like sudoku, you should definitely check this game out. You're given a grid with a series of numbers along the top and side indicating sequences of "on" squares. Using your powers of deduction, you must figure out which squares are "on" and which are "off". Multiple difficulties for those who are looking for a quick solve or more of a challenge. https://www.ea.com/games/the-sims/the-sims-4 (The Sims (after a long, hard day)) The ultimate god simulator, The Sims allows you to control every facet of your characters lives. From their clothes, to their houses, personalities, relationships, and even day to day activities, you can be as hands on or hands off as you like. Perfect for helicopter parents who need a bit more control in their lives. http://www.okami-game.com/ (Okami (asthetic)) An oldie but a goodie, there's a reason this game has been re-released on every generation since the PS2. Great for fans of puzzle focused ARPGs a la The Legend of Zelda, Okami follows the story of Amaterasu as she saves feudal Japan from a looming darkness. If you know someone who claims games aren't art, this is the only example you'll ever need. Okami looks and feels like a living painting. In fact, use of the "celestial brush" to "draw" across the screen is a major mechanic in the game. An absolutely beautiful game that is as unique today as well as it was back in 2006.

In This Episode: We talk about where we stand with the Final Fantasy franchise right now. There's the FFVII Remake Demo on PS4, some FFXIV Shadowbringers talk, and even Void getting to the FFXV DLC that really should have been part of the main game! FF7 Remake Demo, Misc Thoughts: Void - Combat is fine. Not the best, not the worst. Curious to dig into the materia system. Beej - it’s not great, but at least it’s not totally button mashing with no real depth Void - Likes it better than FFXV. It feels more responsive. Beej - It feels like Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy XV had a baby, and XV has the dominant genetics Void really wants to replay it in “classic” mode to see how it feels. No jump button. Beej hates. You jump like in older 3d Zelda games, by running up to a ledge. It’s awkward. And I want to jump while running around, dangit. The buttons change their function based on combat, so if you get aggro and expect to dash away, think again. You’ve just opened up your tactics menu for a party member. The character swapping/menu opening during combat seems counterintuitive. Pressing X to open the menu instead of the D-Pad Up/Down made Beej constantly swap party members back and forth when all he needed was a Potion or to cast Thunder. Other SE games trained us that D-pad was how menus work in real-time ARPGs. Why change it now? WHY? It’s already obvious that it’s going to be much more fleshed out, both in terms of the world and the story. It will be filling in the gaps between the screens of the original while still making everything logically connect on the map is super impressive. Our primary concern is making the city of Midgar not seem samey all over. We want diverse locations and neighborhoods. The voice acting is top-notch -- except for Barrett. If he never speaks again, it will be too soon. Cloud and the others are all distinct and unique and it never felt out of place the way some voices feel in games. Talking to you as you move through the levels like in FFXV, getting to know your companions organically. Hype Level and Final Impressions? Void - much more excited (and I was already excited) BJ - I’ll buy it now. (Had cancelled my preorder and was waiting on initial opinions from people I trust) FFXV DLC Gladio - What if FFXV was a series of melee battle challenges? Prompto - What if FFXV was a Third person shooter? Ignis - What if FFXV was an area control game? There’s a part of Ignis’ story that should 100% be in the main game and not the DLC. Can’t believe this got cut from the story of the main game. If there’s one DLC that you should play out of all of them… it’s this one. Ardyn - What if we had more of the background story of the main villain of the game? Makes him even more sympathetic and understandable Comrades - Just bad. Bad bad. Bad...bad. Bad. Final Fantasy XIV Austin started playing again with a new account on Leviathan, and so did Beej. Austin's character is Vinn Astoltia and Beej is Lesser Wyrmsbane. No idea how much either of us will be on, but feel free to hit us up. We have a Free Company called Bluth. It's Arrested Development themed, and we have a house in Mist. Beej is kind of tired being the human lady he was through Heavensward and Stormblood. Likely gonna toss a tenner at the Mogstation to get a vial of fantasia to change my appearance. Let's be honest, he's gonna probably go back to Lalafell. Because Beej. Support the G2G Network! Tons of content at geektogeekmedia.com, more coming every week. Dragon Quest X on Switch Austin’s how-to post did super well on the site and people went nuts on FB for it since someone broke it down on how easy it was to get working in the US. (https://geektogeekmedia.com/geekery/dragonquestaustin/how-to-play-dragon-quest-x-in-america-on-nintendo-switch-for-free/) The whole of 1.0 and part of 2.0 are basically a free trial now, and you can play up to 440 hours. Prologue is short, and you don’t really need to know Japanese to do it. (https://geektogeekmedia.com/geekery/dragonquestaustin/adventures-in-astoltia-part-1-playing-the-prologue/) Combat is interesting. It’s not MMOish at all. Turn-based and menu-based, too. Void: Waking Sleeping Beauty is great. Watch it to learn about how Disney almost wasn't an animation studio. Dooku Lost really feels like they’re trying to wrap up the prequel trilogy expanded universe with new canon material. A lot of the most recent books touch on that time period and clone wars is coming back out This is the first Dooku focused story that I’ve actually liked. It's put together as a full-cast audio drama This feels like them tying a bow on some things and cleaning up dangling plot threads before the High Republic era kicks off Support the Podcast on Patreon You can go to https://patreon.com/geektogeekcast to support the podcast, and you can get some cool stuff, too. Episode 178 – The Year of the ARPG Neinball is joined by special guest Leviathan to discuss s19, Diablo IV, and just how many other ARPGs are coming out this year in how competition is good for the industry as a whole.
Over the past year, the Retro Spectives Podcast has started to see a small community of gamers join up to our discord server. We talk old video-games, new video games, and tend to get into a lot of arguments over exactly which ARPGS suck and why.As we end this year, we thought it would be fun to open up our mailbag for questions from these users. And they all delivered with some fantastic questions! We got to talk in depth about games and their mechanics, both from the show and 2019. We got to revisit old arguments and even got into entirely new ones! Thanks to everyone who submitted questions, keep ‘em coming! On this episode, we discuss:What are the worst opinions of both James and Pat according to the other person? It took hours to narrow down from the available possibilities, but we got there in the end.Is there anything that games of the past used to do that new games no longer feature? Were they changed for the better, or has something been lost in the process? How many times can Patrick mention Dark Souls in an hour and 40 minutes? The estimated over/under is 10.We answer these questions from our listeners, and many more on the 26th episode of the Retro Spectives Podcast! We’ll see you in a fortnight to conclude our 2019 wrap up with our GOTY episode! If you enjoyed the episode or wanted to submit questions for future episodes, then come and hang out with us over on discord and for everything else, checkout our website at rsPodcast.net for all sorts of articles about the games we love and hate!
ARPGs, CRPGs, JRPGs, oh my! We talk about a bunch of RPGs including the newly released Fallout-like first-person RPG, The Outer Worlds. Death Stranding's getting a PC release, Blizzcon's going to be interesting and the Playstation 4 is doing pretty OK.

Diablo 1 laid the groundwork for the action-RPG genre way back in 1996. We have Diablo to thank for genre staples like colour-coded loot, elite mobs and town-portal scrolls. But since then, ARPGS have evolved into incredibly complex beasts, with sprawling skill trees, crafting systems and character customisation that makes Diablo 1 look quaint in comparison. But is high-complexity necessarily better than a game which is simple and refined? Are more realistic graphics with their anti-aliasing and 3D Graphics better than basic yet haunting hallways? Has Diablo 1 stood the test of time, or is it better left forgotten as a relic of the ARPG genre? In this episode, we discuss:What creates good atmosphere? How well does Diablo 1 immerse you in its experience, and how does it compare to modern ARPGS like Diablo 3 and Path to Exile? The amount and types of loot available to you while playing through Diablo is quite limited - does this make loot feel more meaningful, or does it just make the game less interesting?Pat and James continue their classic argument about respecs. Are respecs something every game should have, or is something essential lost when you can change the nature of your character with ease?We answer these questions, and many more, on the 19th episode of the Retro Spectives Podcast! If you enjoyed the show and would like to continue the conversation, feel free to head on over to our Discord which you can find here or on our website. Thanks for listening!

--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/greek-titans/message

Back in the day I loved this game, and now thanks to backwards compatability I can once again enjoy it! This is probably one of the best ARPGs you've never heard of.
Jessica and Mark delve into what makes Diablo III different from other ARPGs, and Jessica unearths a secret contract that all game developers must sign.
