FURTHER REEDING (the world's finest Oliver Reed-themed podcast) returns with Oliver Reed's first starring role: the 1961 Hammer horror classic CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF! Despite Reed's starring credit he doesn't appear until the half-way mark of the film, but within minutes he shows his potential for stardom.. and that's before he turns into a hairy, drooling monster! A much different werewolf tale than the Universal classics, it's filled with pathos and sadness, but still gives you plenty of carnage in the final twenty minutes or so. LET'S TALK ABOUT IT! The post Episode 276 – Further Reeding – Curse of the Werewolf (1961) first appeared on Cinema Smorgasbord.
The Reptile and The Gorgon are essentially Hammer werewolf films, but here we go with their only one that featured an actual werewolf.

Based loosely on Guy Endore's novel The Werewolf of Paris, Hammer's only werewolf movie is a unique take on the usual lycanthropic fare, positing it as a spiritual curse tied to a person's environment rather than something you catch from a werewolf bite. Set in Spain, the film follows Reed as a young man who gets a job at a wine vineyard… cursed to transform into a werewolf when the moon is full. His only hope for a normal life depends on the love of a good Catholic woman. Complications ensue. Despite its controversial violence and memorable werewolf transformation effects, the film was initially unsuccessful but has since garnered a cult following and is now considered one of Hammer's best. Reed's tragic performance, mirroring his future troubled life, adds depth to this dark tale. Plus: some great quotes from Oliver's 1979 autobiography “Reed All About Me” and Meg's takes on some of the other Horror FX movies now streaming on Criterion Channel, along with The Curse of the Werewolf. HALLOWEEN HUMPFEST has officially begun and last year we tackled some Hammer Horror starring ( mostly) Christopher Lee. This year, every Wednesday, we're rocking even more Hammer Horror movies with another actor that will (mostly) appear. We're talking about Mr. Funtimes himself, Oliver Reed. Today we discuss an emotional Oliver Reed performance in the 1961 film “THE CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF” directed by the prolific Terence Fisher and also starring Clifford Evans, Yvonne Roman & Catherine Feller. A young boy, whose conception is from a sexual assault, is born on Christmas Day. Apparently anybody who is born on this day, that isn't Jesus, is cursed. If that's not sad enough his mother dies after going through labor. A kind man and his housekeeper raise the boy as his own. A good kid is given a chance but fate says “fuck them kids” because the man's feral curse is bigger than any kindness. Actual wolves are easier to tame than this poor Werewolf who becomes a serial killer every full moon by no fault of the man inside. Our first of three werewolf features this month and they're all pretty much tragedies. Reel Britannia - a very British podcast about very British movies...with just a hint of professionalism This week...more from the great Hammer studios as we continue our Hammer horror retrospective The Curse Of The Werewolf (1961) A man with brutal and macabre origins, Leon Corledo (Oliver Reed) was raised in the home of Don Alfredo Corledo (Clifford Evans), his kind and loving adopted father. When he leaves Don Alfredo to find work, Leon discovers that he has increasingly violent urges. Although these tendencies are calmed by Leon's love for the beautiful Christina (Catherine Feller), he ultimately cannot contain his curse and transforms into a werewolf, terrorizing the Spanish countryside. It's Christmas and what better way to celebrate than with Hammer's first festive film, Curse of the Werewolf (1960, Terence Fisher). Welcome back to the Crestwood House podcast presented by the Cult Film Club. On this episode we finish out our Cycle of the Werewolf by taking a look at the 1961 Hammer flick, Curse of the Werewolf starring Oliver Reed.
Sixty years after its initial release, Surgeons Saul Muerte and Meredith Murphy look back at the Hammer Horror film starring Oliver Reed, based on the Guy Endore novel. Does it still stand the test of time? Time to sink our teeth in and find out.
Hammer fanatics, get ready! Because the Summer of Hammer is here to seduce you, with a pair of creature features! Oliver Reed uses his charm, and a typical passionate performance, to win our hearts. Despite the fact that he would prefer to eat us. The full moon will have you howling for this early Hammer classic, Hammer's only feature film foray into werewolf lore. It's The Curse of the Werewolf (1961)! And then from there, just what is Ingrid Pitt up to, in the role that made her a cult horror icon? The answer is: vampire stuff. Obviously. Mircalla? Carmilla? Marcilla? It doesn't matter what her name is! And your gender is irrelevant, too. If Ingrid wants you, she's going to use her vampire wiles to seduce you. Good luck trying to resist! You know, if you even want to...in The Vampire Lovers (1970)!

Beware the moon! The wolfsbane is blooming and trouble is brewing as we dissect Universal’s THE WOLFMAN and Hammer’s THE CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF. We have two very different takes on the monster legend as one uses a more traditional angle, and the other creates its own myth that is still being repeated in modern horror. How does European sensibility impact the story of the wolf? Has Chaney’s bouffant fallen flat? And is it actually charming to peep in a woman’s window? --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/creepinitreel/support
Things get hairy as SimonUK and Ryan take a look at two movies where a fellow is really not feeling himself. We look at the classic Universal take on werewolves and the lesser known entry from Hammer (Spanish werewolves!), which are wildly different in some ways, but really agree on the "sorry, you're doomed" angle when it comes to curses that turn one into a ravening beast who still politely wears trousers.

'Don't Let Fear Run Your Life!'Season One - Episode TwoIn tonight's episode we start with an exciting invitation (though we understand some of you in the church aren't keen). Next, we hear some sad (and messy news) about our church cleaner. We also welcome Mr. Straker to our congregation. The church is helping to sponsor the grand opening of Barlow and Straker Antiques in town, so it's lovely to have him join us. Even if he is a little abrupt (only kidding, Mr. Straker! ho ho)Little Ralphie Glick shares our Bible reading, and then in Peter's talk, he encourages us to not let fear run our lives. He also shares something that scared him in Florida, which is amusing, as many of us hear in the Cove thought it was not scary at all, when we went on our big Florida trip last winter. But anyway...we do not judge you Peter - and thanks for the encouragement! Our church pianist, (the renowned composer John Russell) plays during our meditation and prayer, then our band close the service by leading us in a tender new song that was written especially for this service - 'I'm Scared of Werewolves'. We do hope you enjoy our 'broadcast'! Do subscribe for more episodes, or join the congregation for even more shivers! This episode is dedicated to the memory of our thirsty cleaner Shawna Brokenbridge (1988 - 2020) See you on the other side, Shawna!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/creepycove)

This week on The Spectator Film Podcast… The Curse of the Werewolf (1961) 10/11/19 Featuring: Austin, Maxx Commentary track begins 14:46 — Notes — Terence Fisher by Peter Hutchings — An engaging and insightful book on the director of many of Hammer’s greatest movies, Terence Fisher. Peter Hutchings is a wonderful writer, and this book fits right in with a lot of his other writing. There’s a brief section here discussing The Curse of the Werewolf. A New Heritage of Horror: The English Gothic Cinema by David Pirie — This study by David Pirie was one of the foremost academic examinations of the gothic tradition in British filmmaking. The book isn’t exclusively dedicated to Hammer, but Pirie still discusses Hammer films extensively, while also dedicating an entire chapter to Terence Fisher. Recommended for anyone looking to learn some more about Hammer. This episode combines two of the DDG's favorite things: the genre character sculptures of artist Mike Hill and our combined love for werewolves in the movies! Mike Hill is an English artist and sculptor who is literally a monster maker. His life-size figures of movie characters including Lon Chaney as The Wolf Man, Boris Karloff as the Frankenstein creature and many more have been featured displays on horror conventions and are prized collectibles by genre devotees including Guillermo del Toro. The painstaking attention to detail and character Mike puts into his life-size figures brilliantly capture the likeness of his famous film subjects as well as those iconic movie moments that reside indelibly in the minds of monster kids like us. We discuss with Mike how he accomplishes sculpting and recreating these characters from classic films like FRANKENSTEIN, THE CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF, recently I WAS A TEENAGE WEREWOLF at Monsterpalooza, plus Mike's stunning adaptation of the classic Aurora Wolf Man model kit in life-size form! Hill is also famous for his realistic figures of real world monster makers including Ray Harryhausen and Jack Pierce. The DDG and Mike also delve once again into a favorite topic of film werewolves, a subject that launched Hill's fascination with genre films, model making and art. A lively discussion ensues about how the underlying concept of dual personalities and repressed human impulses has remained a relevant theme in genre movies and literature for over a century. Enjoy our howling good Damn Dirty Geeks podcast with artist Mike Hill and be sure to visit our website for a photo gallery of Mike's sculptures to fully appreciate his amazing talents and love for monsters! If you're a fan of werewolves too, be sure to check out the DDG's episode devoted to lycanthropes in film, literature and pop culture as well.
