Under a pro-growth Trump administration, both dynamics could flourish, creating sharply divergent opportunities for long-term investors and short-term traders alike. Unlike past Bitcoin cycles that culminated in definitive peaks, 2025 may not follow the traditional script. What happens when your toughest challenges become your biggest opportunities? On this episode of Leveraging Thought Leadership, host Bill Sherman dives deep with Neri Karra Sillaman—an Entrepreneurship Expert, TEDx Speaker, and Professor at ESCP Business School—about how her early life as a refugee set her on a path to becoming a thought leader and entrepreneur. Neri shares the story of her childhood, growing up as part of a Turkish minority in Bulgaria during the 1980s, facing forced assimilation, and eventually being expelled from the country. With only two suitcases, her family fled to Turkey. From those humble beginnings in refugee camps, Neri realized education was her key to changing her life. This powerful experience laid the foundation for her future work in entrepreneurship and academia. But how does a life of survival translate into thought leadership? Neri discusses how her research took her on a journey to understand why immigrants create businesses—and more importantly, why some of those businesses endure. Her "ah-ha" moment came when she found that many studies focused on the why of immigrant entrepreneurship but few explored how these businesses achieve longevity. This insight sparked her upcoming book, which distills the strategies of immigrant founders that any entrepreneur can apply. Her message is clear: business longevity isn't just for immigrant entrepreneurs. It's for anyone who wants to build something that lasts. Neri is working to bridge the gap between startup challenges and the principles that help businesses thrive over the long term. When asked how she moved beyond academia to practice thought leadership, Neri explains how she transitioned from writing academic papers to producing content for HBR, Fast Company, and other platforms that directly impact business leaders. She challenges thought leaders to think about how they can make their work accessible and actionable. Three Key Takeaways: • Adversity can shape success – Neri's experience as a refugee shaped her drive and resilience, which became the foundation for her entrepreneurial journey and thought leadership. • Immigrant entrepreneurship holds key lessons for all – The principles that help immigrant businesses endure are applicable to any entrepreneur looking to achieve long-term success. • Practical thought leadership matters – Moving beyond academic research, Neri emphasizes the importance of creating accessible, actionable content that resonates with business owners and drives real impact. Neri has spent her life seeking success in academia and entrepreneurship. If you want to find that same success in Thought Leadership take a moment to watch this short video from Thought Leadership Leverage COO Bill Sherman on successfully launching a thought leadership team.
Strategy in Action Davide Sola is Co-founder of Strategy in Action. He is a Professor at ESCP Business School and a listing professor at other leading business schools. He has more than 20 years of experience in strategy consulting at McKinsey and 3H Partners. Davide has written lots of articles, policy papers and his book "How to Think Strategically" can be purchased on Amazon. Now, married with 3 kids, living in London, he hails from Turin. Summary of the Podcast Introductions Graham and Kevin introduce Davide Sola, a professor at the ESCP business school in London. Davide provides background on his career. He's got previous experience in investment banking and private equity, as well as his current roles as a professor and entrepreneur. The connection between strategy and innovation Davide explains that strategy and innovation are closely linked. Strategy involves making choices to go from point A to point B, and innovation is the result of those strategic choices. He emphasises that strategy without innovation, and innovation without strategy, are both problematic. Successful strategy requires making tough choices about where to play, how to win, and what capabilities and systems to put in place. Aligning the organisation around strategy Davide discusses the importance of aligning the entire organisation around a clear strategic vision and set of objectives. He notes that often different departments or leaders have divergent views on the company's strategic priorities. Davide addresses this with techniques like the "strategy one-pager" to create a shared understanding. Moreover, there is a need for frequent strategic reviews. Plus, the courage to make difficult decisions about what to stop doing. Using technology to enable strategic agility Graham asks about the role of technology and AI in enabling more frequent strategic reviews and analysis. Davide explains that his company, Strategy in Action, aims to make strategic planning more accessible and iterative. This will be done through the use of frameworks, data, and intelligent AI agents that can surface insights and prompt strategic questions. Recap and next steps Graham and Kevin wrap up the discussion, thanking Davide for his insights. Clips from the Podcast We Don't Have the Staff! When you think about cultivated meat, Thailand isn't exactly the first country that comes to mind. Sure, you may think about the US, Netherlands, Israel, and Singapore. But the Southeast Asian kingdom is where Israeli cultivated meat juggernaut Aleph Farms recently announced its first commercial factory will be. Having just received Israel's first regulatory approval to sell cultivated meat—and the world's first regulatory approval for cultivated beef in particular—Aleph Farms CEO Didier Toubia discusses his company's rollout strategy with me in this conversation. As you'll hear, Aleph wants to start by selling limited quantities in Israel within 2024, but the company intends to operate its first plant in Thailand with what Didier calls an “asset light” pilot facility capable of producing 1,000 tons a year. For those of you who aren't mathletes, that's about two million pounds of finished cultivated meat product—”finished” meaning finished goods that are a hybrid of animal cells and plant-based ingredients as well. Of course, two million pounds is a vast quantity compared to the volume of cultivated meat that's been produced thus far, but it's not even a rounding error in Asia's meat demand, let alone global meat demand. So how long will it be before Didier thinks the cultivated meat sector will make a real dent in animal meat demand? You can hear his answer in this episode! Despite negative headlines surrounding the space lately, Didier claims he's more optimistic than ever before about his prospects for success, and that he's still fighting to have $1 billion in revenue within the next 10 years. You can hear him explain why he thinks that's realistic in this conversation. Discussed in this episode This episode is the fifth in a multi-part podcast series on cultivated meat. The previous four episodes include Eat Just, Fork & Good, Mosa Meat, and New Harvest. We discussed Aleph Farms and the impact of the 10/7 Hamas massacre in Israel in our recent episode with Kitchen CEO Jonathan Berger. Aleph Farms' recent announcement to move to set up shop in Thailand, partnering with Fermbox Bio. Didier attended The Better Meat Co.'s Night Under the Fermenters. The global meat market is worth about $1.5 trillion. Didier's recent Fast Company op-ed explaining his regret about cultivated meat timeline predictions. More about Didier Toubia Didier Toubia is the Co-Founder and CEO of Aleph Farms. He's a Food Engineer and Biologist who led two medical device companies and co-invented over 40 patent families; Co-Founder and CEO of IceCure – went public in 2010, and CEO of NLT Spine – acquired by SeaSpine in 2016. He was trained at AgroSup in Dijon, France, and was awarded with a specialized masters degree from ESCP Business School. Didier holds a joint Executive MBA degree from the Kellogg and Recanati business schools, USA and Israel.

Etienne Salborn is the founder of SINA (the Social Innovation Academy), a talent campus in Uganda. He also serves as a lecturer for social entrepreneurship at the Management Center Innsbruck and the ESCP Business School, resource person for the Asian Productivity Organization and facilitator for the ChangemakerXchange. His expertise and leadership have earned him recognition as an “AACSB Influential Leader 2021” and he was named an Innovation Ecosystem Builder Fellow by MIT D-lab in 2018.The Berlin-born social entrepreneur has had quite the life journey since taking off for Uganda at age 18 for a volunteering community service (an option to eschew the German military service). In his conversation with Anne, he tells her about how he set up his first and then second non-profit organisations after he found his life's mission: to support the empowerment of marginalised youth in rural Uganda. We discuss his very special master's program in Austria, called Peace, Development, Security and International Conflict Transformation, and how it led him into a journey of self-discovery and experiential learning (which included simulation of a conflict war zone as well as mindfulness, meditation and contemplation on Austria's mountains in minus 27 degree Celsius).Etienne explains how SINA came to be, what three pillars underpin the project and how young students, or SINA scholars, are onboarded and grow their roles within the community, built as a self-organised system that runs on what the concept of ‘freesponsibility' (freedom + responsibility). With people living and working in the community, Etienne explains how they have used models from Nonviolent Communication, holacracy, and his master's program facilitation tools to help navigate change, conflict and feedback — something of a challenge in a flat structure of 60+ individuals. SINA's goal is to help young people unleash their potential, create their own change and build their own social enterprises. Etienne shares how SINA has grown into a replicable model, building a new generation of social entrepreneurs who are solving challenges for society and the environment. With more than 12 communities across Uganda and other African countries, Etienne talks about what's next, how we can support, engage with and even visit SINA, and why we should all explore the power of community. A unique interview with a thoughtful and impact-driven changemaker. Managing rapid growth is a huge challenge for young businesses. Even start-ups with glowing reviews and skyrocketing sales can fail. That's because new ventures and corporate initiatives alike have to sustain profitability at scale, according to Harvard Business School senior lecturer Jeffrey Rayport. He has researched some of the biggest stumbling blocks to long-lasting success and explains how to make the tricky transition out of the start-up phase successfully. With professors Davide Sola and Martin Kupp of ESCP Business School, Rayport cowrote the HBR article “The Overlooked Key to a Successful Scale-Up.”
