James Majure returns to the pod from Athens, GA for a two-part episode on Michael Mann's Manhunter, a box office and critical disappointment in 1986 that has emerged over the decades into being extremely influential not only on Mann's future works but on film and television in general, from genre conventions to forensic procedurals on TV. In part 1, we discuss the various cuts of Manhunter in existence, the source material, Thomas Harris' bestselling novel Red Dragon, Mann's tremendous empathy towards all the characters in his adaptation, the ways Manhunter's themes keeps turning up in Mann's later works, and how the Miami Vice series seems to have been a test kitchen for a lot of Mann's preoccupations as a film stylist.  Plus: a Michael Mann update with the surprise arrival of The Keep to Bluray and the 25th anniversary of The Insider. Part 2 of our discussion about Manhunter, including the Brett Ratner remake Red Dragon and a mid-series episode of Miami Vice that feels a lot like Manhunter, is available on the Junk Filter Patreon feed.  Over 30% of all Junk Filter episodes are only available to patrons of the podcast. linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This month is Masterclass Month at Catching Up On Cinema! September 2024 marks our 6th anniversary of podcasting, and to commemorate the occasion, we take a month to do a deep dive on a popular, long-lived movie franchise. For this year's Masterclass, we'll be reviewing the Hannibal Lecter series of films! Created by author Thomas Harris, Hannibal Lecter is a charismatic serial killer that, across multiple novels, films, and most recently, TV series, has consistently captivated global audiences since his inception in 1981. This week, our Masterclass continues with a review of confirmed piece of shit, Brett Ratner's, Red Dragon (2002)! The second adaptation of the first of Thomas Harris' Hannibal Lecter series of novels, Brett Ratner's, Red Dragon (2002) is a sanitized, and by the numbers adaptation of the classic novel of the same name. Once again produced by mega producers Dino and Martha De Laurentiis (who also produced Hannibal), Red Dragon, in spite of also featuring the talents of cinematographer, Dante Spinotti (who also shot Manhunter), and Ted Tally (screenwriter of Silence of the Lambs), is somewhat bland, and considerably less stylized rendition of Thomas Harris' novel than Michael Mann's, Manhunter (1986). Just a short year after the release of Hannibal (2002), Anthony Hopkins returns to reprise his role as Hannibal Lecter, with Edward Nortion starring as Will Graham, previously embodied on screen by William Petersen. An early example of a fanservice oriented prequel/sequel, Red Dragon goes out of its way to remind viewers at every turn, of the vastly superior Silence of the Lambs. Cast members, characterizations, iconography, and locations from Silence are all exploited, not without justification, but quite readily, and in a fashion that was not yet en vogue in Hollywood. In spite of its weaker presentation as compared to Manhunter, Red Dragon nevertheless benefits greatly from the novelty factor of its adaptation featuring additional scenes with Hannibal Lecter, and from ,pre greatly emphasizing the characterizations of Francis Dolarhyde and Reba McClane (played by Ralph Fiennes and Emily Watson respectively), who in Manhunter were given considerably less screen time. Blunt, and not especially confident in it's presentation or storytelling, Red Dragon is almost entirely buoyed by the efforts of its exemplary cast of players, with Ralph Fiennes and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman both making enormous contributions to the entertainment value of the film, in spite of the otherwise pedestrian filmmaking from director and confirmed piece of shit, Brett Ratner. The film is at once the story of the the tremendous power of corporate entities to take down those who seek to share the truth with the American public and an expressionist masterpiece that showcases some of Mann's most disciplined and mature directorial work. We discuss the film's seismic lead performances from dual leads Al Pacino and a career-best Russell Crowe. Then, we praise the Michael Mann & Eric Roth script, and its critical portrayal of its subjects, avoiding lionization. Finally, we discuss the story's terrible prescience, and how the film's shock at corporate media interests overruling the efforts of journalists can sometimes feel quaint by today's standards. Read Marie Brenner's profile of Jeffrey Wigand "The Man Who Knew Too Much" in Vanity Fair. ....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish

A New Kind of Forgotten Western - Sam Raimi's The Quick & the Dead This week Mr. Chavez continues to travel and I continue my exploration into the vast number of films that I've somehow missed in this lifetime. There are quite a few films on this list and this podcast allows me the opportunity to watch them and assess their value. This week's choice is the 1995 Sam Raimi-directed, Sharon Stone lead (a rarity in the Western genre) The Quick & the Dead. This is by far not a great film or a forgotten masterpiece, however it is somewhat fascinating in its snapshot look at mid-90s Hollywood filmmaking. The beginning of an independent filmmakers dive into studio filmmaking (at this point, Raimi had directed The Evil Dead series and Darkman but was yet to take on the Spiderman series) and Sharon Stone's emergence as a powerhouse star and producer after Basic Instinct. With supporting performances from a nasty, vile, and dangerous Gene Hackman, and early appearances from Russell Crowe and Leonardo DiCaprio, Raimi's film is filled wtih beautiful cinematography (Dante Spinotti) and exceptionally strange and compelling production design. It's a good time and I'm thrilled that I had the opportunity to watch it for this show. I hope you enjoy it. Questions, Comments, Complaints, & Suggestions can be directed to gondoramos@yahoo.com. We discuss the real life story of Chicago detective Chuck Adamson, whose coffee break with career criminal Neil McCauley inspired Mann's film, the iconic first-ever onscreen scene between acting heavyweights Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro, the many parallelisms between Hanna and McCauley, Michael Mann's collaboration with celebrated cinematographer Dante Spinotti (which began with Manhunter in 1986), the incredibly well-researched screenplay, the loneliness of existing outside regular society, and the rigorous training the actors went through to perform their roles. Robby Baumgartner began his film career 28 years ago in New York City. His interest in lighting inspired him to choose the unconventional route to DP via Gaffing. This career path allowed him to light films and learn from some of the most talented DP's in the business: Rodrigo Prieto, Chris Menges, Robert Elswit, Dante Spinotti, Darius Khondji, Janusz Kaminski, and Emmanuel Lubezki. Some of the films include: “8 Mile”, “25th Hour”, “21 Grams”, “Babel”, “Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada”, and “There Will be Blood”.In between Gaffing gigs he took every opportunity to DP or camera-operate on feature films, 2nd-unit photography, commercials, and shorts. Then in 2008 “There Will be Blood” shot by Robert Elswit, won the Oscar for Best Cinematography; the highest honor for any DP/Gaffing team. That event was the impetus for Robby to stop gaffing and DP exclusively. In 2009 Robby joined the International Cinematographers Guild as a DP. Since then he has gone on to shoot 2nd unit on both “Hunger Games” l and ll, “Water for Elephants”, and “Argo” amongst other films. For the last 5 years he has been concentrating on shooting main unit for films such as “The Guest”, “Blair Witch (2016)” and now “Blindspotting”, which has been selected for competition in the US Dramatic category at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival.W: http://robbybaumgartner.com/about/Like to have a ASC cinematographer as a mentor?Have you thought of upgrading your cinematography game? More Movies Please!

On the podcast this week, Steven and Sean are crashing into armored cars and knocking off downtown banks in the classic, electric Michael Mann film, Heat. We’re pretty astounded that this film is now as old as it is (and will only continue to get older because that is indeed, perhaps unsurprisingly, how time works) considering how timeless it is. Sure, there are still pagers shown in this movie and the cops would never be able to make it to the downtown bank that’s being robbed because there’s so much more traffic there now, but it still somehow feels evergreen! Let’s put that down to the magic of filmmaking. In a movie that’s nearly three hours long, it’s amazing how engrossing and energetic it still feels. Is it any wonder why when it stars so many phenomenal actors? I mean, you’ve got your De Niros, your Pacinos, your Kilmers and Judds and Brennemans. And then you throw them all on the screen together, sometimes even at the same time? It doesn’t get any better than this movie! And we haven’t even gotten to the intense action sequences. Seriously, the opening armored car robbery and the bank robbery that happens midway through are still some of the best pieces of action that have ever been put on film. If you can, make sure to watch this one with great speakers. You’ll feel like you’re living in the movie and also probably upset your neighbors. The sound design in Heat is on another level. The bank robbery scene is a great example of how the audio in this film elevates every other moment in it. There’s a reason why this film and that particular action scene is still so well-loved. We think it’s due in large part to its realistic sound design. ‘90s era Los Angeles has also never been shot better than it was by Dante Spinotti in this film. There’s a certain glittering realness to how everything looks that just isn’t easy to achieve anymore. We loved every moment of this film. Robby Baumgartner began his film career 28 years ago in New York City. His interest in lighting inspired him to choose the unconventional route to DP via Gaffing. This career path allowed him to light films and learn from some of the most talented DP’s in the business: Rodrigo Prieto, Chris Menges, Robert Elswit, Dante Spinotti, Darius Khondji, Janusz Kaminski, and Emmanuel Lubezki. Some of the films include: “8 Mile”, “25th Hour”, “21 Grams”, “Babel”, “Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada”, and “There Will be Blood”. In between Gaffing gigs he took every opportunity to DP or camera-operate on feature films, 2nd-unit photography, commercials, and shorts. For the last 5 years he has been concentrating on shooting main unit for films such as “The Guest”, “Blair Witch (2016)” and now “Blindspotting”, which has been selected for competition in the US Dramatic category at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival.

It's a real "show of shows" this week on BEHIND THE LENS as we welcome back the fabulous DEON TAYLOR for the entire hour! Take a listen as we go in-depth talking about Deon's latest film – THE INTRUDER plus Deon's journey as a filmmaker to arrive at today with a wide release feature film that debuted as the #1 new release at the box office and only second to "Avengers: Endgame". A man who has always kept his eye on the ball, his story is an inspiration to every filmmaker or wannabe filmmaker. And he is as affable, energetic and entertaining as can be while staying grounded, grateful, and humble. Dennis Quaid affectionately refers to him as "Mr. Excitement." One of the hallmarks of his filmmaking finds Deon with an uncanny knack for lulling one into a false sense of security when it comes to both his characters and his audience. He shows us ordinary people who become victims to terrifying circumstances, but who somehow find the inner mettle to survive. He also excels at showcasing the power of family, love, and that inherent will to survive, relying on the first two to propel the third. We saw it in "Supremacy". We saw it in "Traffik". We even saw it in the dark comedy "Meet the Blacks." His films boast dark forces and faces that we often don't see or knowingly look away from. And now Deon Taylor gives us THE INTRUDER. He once again brings terror to our home and our hearts and lays it on our doorstep, literally and figuratively, immersing us in true moments of jump out of your skin, heart pounding fright. You think you were afraid of monsters in the closet and under the bed before? Thanks to Deon and his vision, in true Hitchcockian style, the monsters in THE INTRUDER are more frightening than ever thanks to an award-worthy, insanely brilliant performance from Dennis Quaid. Knowing Dennis and knowing Deon, I only wish I had been a fly on the wall during the filming of THE INTRUDER. Coming from the world of professional basketball, Deon finds many aspects of sports analogous to filmmaking and talks about this during the hour. He also speaks from the heart about his journey as a self-taught filmmaker complete with the pitfalls and triumphs. And Deon is not shy about crediting the artisans who he works with, collaborates with, and learns from at every turn. We go into a detailed discussion about cinematography and use of color, and his work with cinematographer Daniel Pearl on THE INTRUDER, as well as Dante Spinotti's work on "Traffik". Plus, we talk about Deon's BE WOKE web campaign to engage the youth and African-American community to get out and vote, and get involved in their communities at the grassroots level and beyond. Good messages in this video series for everyone! And BE WOKE was recently nominated for a Webby Award! Sit back and take a listen now and let DEON TAYLOR "intrude" on you for the next hour with the filmmaking lessons he's learned in traversing the industry, sticking to his guns, following his instincts, and of course, THE INTRUDER. http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

We're putting the pedal to the metal on this episode of BEHIND THE LENS with writer/director/producer DEON TAYLOR talking everything TRAFFIK. Already an established, and admittedly self-taught, director, TRAFFIK is completely representative of Deon as a storyteller and as a filmmaker. Listen as we talk about working with legendary cinematographer Dante Spinotti, not to mention the film's sound design, employing sound and visual to create some riveting and striking sequences within the film. And how about the casting of TRAFFIK? Paula Patton, Roselyn Sanchez, Omar Epps and Laz Alonso all go against type and deliver outstanding performances under Deon's guidance and collaborative style. Deon's candor and forthright discussion is eye-opening for freshman filmmakers and veterans alike. But before we get to Deon, take a listen to an excerpt of our exclusive interview with writer/director GREG CARUSO talking his latest film FLOCK OF FOUR. Regular listeners will recall Greg previously appeared on BTL talking about his documentary MAKING THE AMERICAN MAN. Well, get ready for something totally different from Greg with FLOCK OF FOUR as he delves into 1959 South Central Los Angeles, the West Coast Harlem, and takes us into the world of jazz. From an incredible and unforgettable original score to cinematography and the entire genesis of the story, the result makes FLOCK OF FOUR a "must see" film. Listen as Greg talks about the initial development of the story and film. . .and his love of jazz. http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

It's an honour to bring you a chat with one of the greatest living cinematographers, the legendary Dante Spintotti (cinematographer of THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS & HEAT). In this bombshell laden discussion, Dante and I discuss joining the film four weeks into production; his contribution to the film's aesthetic and constructing the titanic face-off between Magua (Wes Studi) and Chingachgook (Russell Means).ABOUT DANTE SPINOTTIDante Spinotti was born in Tolmezzo, Udine, in the northeastern Italian Region of Friuli. He began his career at RAI (Italian T.V.), before that he spent a lot of time in Kenia as cinematographer for his uncle. In 1985, producer Dino De Laurentiis offered him a chance to work in the USA for the first time with Michael Mann for the feature Manhunter (1986). From that experience, Spinotti became one of the most appreciated cinematographers in Hollywood. His particular vision gives a movie a great sense of reality. Among his works are The Last of the Mohicans (1992) (Academy Nomination), Heat (1995), L.A. Confidential (1997) (Academy Nomination), The Insider (1999) (Academy Nomination), and Wonder Boys (2000).
