In late August of 2020 the Kentucky State Police Special Response Team attempted to execute search and arrest warrants on a family compound in Johnson Hollow, a heavily wooded and very rural area of Kentucky.  The suspect, who was being sought on potential murder and drug related charges, had hiding locations and weapons throughout the compound and had built a series of hardened firing positions from which to attack officers.  In the 48 hours that followed, the team would have two Officer involved shootings with two different suspects all on the same compound.  This event would stretch the team and its resources to their limits, yet the team rose to the challenge yielding a successful outcome despite almost impossible conditions. This case provides numerous lessons learned and teaching points about rural operations and the dangers of unexpected challenges.  My guests today are Sgt. At least 68 journalists and media workers have been killed in the first 10 weeks of the Israel-Gaza war, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. No other conflict has taken so many journalists' lives in such a short timeframe, with Palestinian journalists in Gaza accounting for the vast majority of the victims. FRANCE 24's Erin Ogunkeye spoke to Tim Dawson, Deputy General Secretary of the International Federation of Journalists, about these killings and the widespread claims that journalists are being deliberately targeted by the Israeli military.

It turns out there are plenty of parallels between the sharp-end of healthcare and the battlefield. This podcast put On Combat on the EM map. Retired Army Lieutenant Colonel and renown author Dave Grossman essentially created the field of killology. His books On Killing and On Combat have made an entire generation of military, law enforcement, and first responders more ready for the stressful, sometimes violent situations they face. Long after his active duty career, Dave has continued to teach the stress-response techniques outlined in his books, traveling to hundreds of bases, posts, and precincts over the years. In this episode, you discover what happens in the body during combat. Visual distortion, auditory exclusion, memory distortion, vasoconstriction, and loss of bladder control are all physiological effects that Soldiers and law enforcement personnel experience in extreme stress but rarely prepare for. Dave Grossman's books and instruction prepare combatants and protectors for the challenge of face-to-face violent stress and infuse confidence in those who have never experienced it before. If you have a team who might face violent stress one day, they need to hear this conversation. Personally, I can tell you that reading On Killing and On Combat made me more prepared for my own combat experience. I invite you to do the same. Read more about Dave Grossman's work at Killology Research Group and check out his books On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society and On Combat, The Psychology and Physiology of Deadly Conflict in War and in Peace. ATTENDEES Lt. Col. Dave Grossman / Josh Hockett / Walker Show Notes Lt. Col. Dave Grossman: Bio - Lt. Col. Dave Grossman is an internationally-recognized author, scholar, soldier and speaker. He is one of the most sought after experts in the field of human aggression, the causes of violence and violent crimes. He is a former West Point psychology professor, Professor of Military Science, and Army Ranger. Using his experiences and knowledge of killing in war, the psychological costs of war, the causes of violent crimes, and the process of healing those who fall victim to violence, Col. Grossman coined a new field of scientific study termed “killology”. Col. Grossman is the author of the books On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society and On Combat: The Psychology and Physiology of Deadly Conflict in War and in Peace. Col. Grossman presents evidence that humans have a fear of killing and committing violent acts. Therefore, soldiers must be specifically trained to not only kill, but learn and understand the physiological and psychological reactions before, during, and after using lethal force. Col. Grossman has presented at more than one hundred colleges and universities worldwide and is highly sought after for training law enforcement and first responders at the state and federal level throughout the United States and the worldwide. In this episode, we discuss the following questions and topics with Col. Grossman: How did you begin your research in the psychology and understanding of killing in war? Explain reality-based training and how it helps soldiers and first responders perform during high-stress situations. Is there a connection between how physically fit a soldier is and his or her ability to perform and recover from high stress situations? What are your suggestions for mentally and physically preparing soldiers and first responders for the job? What are your suggestions for those trying to recover from having to kill in the line of duty? For more information on Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, check out the following: http://www.killology.com/

In this episode, Susan interviews Mel Duncan, the Founding Director and Director of Advocacy and Outreach of Nonviolent Peace Force (NP) which provides unarmed civilian protection in the world's most deadliest of conflicts. In this moving account of the power of “the third side”, Mel talks about those who put themselves in harms way, both nationals and internationals, in conflicts in S. Sudan, Colombia, the Philippines and elsewhere. Mel also talks about how 90% of current victims of current warfare are women and children. Rape, for instance, has become a central strategy of most violent conflict today and NP has tremendous success in stopping further atrocities as Mel describes. He reflects on the origins of NP, as well as his own life path to begin this work when first challenged by a Sufi teacher to “enter the heart of his enemy and work from a place of unity”. He was then further inspired to continue by his stay with Thich Nat Hahn at Plum Village in Southern France.

Humanitas Visiting Professor in Statecraft and Diplomacy 2013: Gareth Evans The Humanitas Chair in Statecraft and Diplomacy has been made possible by the generous support of Mrs Angelika Diekmann. Professor the Hon Gareth Evans AC QC FASSA (Chancellor of the Australian National University) will give a series of three public lectures and a concluding symposium. Abstract Are there any grounds for believing that, when it comes to violent conflict between and within states, the world – contrary to daily media reporting, and nearly all our instincts – is in fact becoming safer and saner? If that really is the trend, what are its foundations, and what can be done to reinforce it? Gareth Evans will draw in this lecture on his long experience in conflict prevention and resolution, in particular as Australian Foreign Minister (1988-96) and President of the International Crisis Group (2000-09).
