April 3, 2025 ~ The Detroit Free Press Marathon won USA Today's 2025 10 Best Readers' Choice Award as the best marathon in the U.S., marking the first time it has topped the national ranking. Race President Aaron Velthoven joins Guy, Lloyd, and Jamie to share the iconic course wrapping around the city, the heavy reliance on volunteers, and so much more!
In S4Ep18 of the PRP, Adam chaotically converses with decorated all distance runner, passionate Altra enthusiast, infamous local legend and all around family man Mike Andersen who has been preparing for the Detroit Free Press Marathon on Sunday October 20th, 2024. Katie Andersen, sabbatical'd ultramarathoner, mama bear extraordinaire, and Mike's better half joins the show (along with their daughters Ally & Maddy Andersen) to offer their take on all things running, Red Robin, and of course how many times dad poops each morning. Buckle up as this conversation comes in HOT with frantic family banter on everything from candy corn to corn hole. Ally plays lacrosse and loves to run, but did you know Maddy is a Swiftie?! They both play basketball and really love it, oh yeah did we mention that they love Diet Coke? But seriously they're not supposed to drink it on school nights but that's ok cuz tonight is special. Oh wait, wait, Maddy likes to run too!! Keep up, if you can! Things settle in and start to get vulnerable when Mike reflects on his running journey and ruminates on how becoming a family man has reshaped his relationship with the sport. Being a husband and father come first, and then running fits into the cracks. Mike shares some valuable anecdotes about what it means to walk the fine line between balance and force as he explains the less expectation he carries with him to the starting line, the better he has come to perform. He's found magic in just letting things happen - a practice in which he credits Katie for helping him fully understand, but more importantly, accept. Without Katie's ability to help Mike communicate, reframe, prioritize and let go he admits he's not sure where he'd be in life, or running. One thing is for sure, Mike's successes on the pavement, trail and track are a TEAM effort, and everyone in the Andersen family is on the roster! What on earth is the 10 year trifecta?! Who's Barkley? Hoopin? Poopin? Newton? 5 nanners at once?!? Uh oh, did mom just say a swear word?! 2-a-days every day?!? Chief Pontiac, Border Patrol & billboards oh my! This and so much more in this wholesome, energetic and enraptured episode of the PRP! After watching the documentary, Breaking Three Hours: Trailblazing African-American Women Marathoners, we were thrilled to welcome the creator, Tony Reed, who is the founder of the National Black Marathoners Association (NBMA). The NBMA is the country's oldest and largest, not-for-profit organization of Black American distance runners. The objectives are to encourage Black Americans and others to pursue a healthy life-style through long distance running and walking and serve as a vehicle for Black American distance runners across the nation to meet in mass at a single marathon. Tony shares why he wrote and directed the award-winning documentary, which is now streaming on Amazon Prime. Unbelievably, at the time of the creation of the documentary in 2022, only nine African American women had broken three hours in the marathon. The documentary shares the stories of these incredible trailblazing women: 1. Marilyn Bevans (1975 at Boston (2:55:52) 1979 Boston Marathon (2:49:56) 2. Ella Willis-Glaze 1981 Detroit Free Press Marathon (2:59:29) 1989 Detroit Free Press Marathon (2:38:22) 3. Michele Bush-Cuke 1981 Avon Marathon (2:39:07) 1991 CA International Marathon (2:37:41) 4. Michele Tiff-Hill 1980 Fiesta Bowl Marathon (2:57:14) 1983 Sri Chinmoy Marathon (2:50:19) 5. Ingrid Eugenia Walters 2014 Chicago Marathon (2:54:58) 2019 Los Angeles Marathon (2:48:03) 6. Alisa Harvey 1999 Richmond Marathon (2:49:28) 7. Samia Akbar 2006 New York City Marathon (2:34:14) 8. Sika Henry 2020 Tidewater Striders Marathon (2:57:13) 9. Shawanna White 2011 Kiawah Island Marathon (2:55:30) 2018 One City Marathon (2:45:19) In addition to discussing the documentary, Tony shares more about his own record-setting accomplishments, why representation is so important, and how the running community can better support African American marathoners to ensure more than a handful of women break three hours and beyond in the marathon. In S2Ep18 of the PRP, Adam rhapsodizes with first time marathoner, proud empty nest father, MetLife client operations czar and running-can-change-your-life pupil Jerry Przywara who has been preparing for the Detroit Free Press Marathon on October 16th, 2022. The PRP listenership is regaled with the story of how running, although present in his life at a young age, slowly crept back into Jerry's life to take the crown as hobby king - first as means to an end but now as a passionate love affair. Jerry gets vulnerable when admitting that for a stint of time in the early 2000's he struggled to maintain movement as a core pillar of his life. Add to that a poor diet and before he knew it Jerry found himself in a place where his health, mood and morale were suffering big time. From treadmill walks inside, to slow five minute walk/runs outside, to his first 5K, to his first half marathon Jerry opens up about what that process has meant to him, how he's tackled it one step at a time, and most importantly he shares some of the key lessons he's learned along the way. Brendan Przywara, on again off again runner, digital story telling extraordinaire, video game designer and Jerry's son joins the show to offer his take on his fathers long and evolving journey. Although Brendan's high school career as a cross country runner was a primary stakeholder in motivating Jerry to get moving again, he admits that the tables have now turned a bit as he has begun to source movement based inspiration from his father's journey. The three then deep dive on what it takes to build a race training plan for a first timer. For Jerry, building his own plan of attack to conquer this goal was an important part of the entire process. By picking up tidbits here and there from podcasts and other athletes he is connected with on Strava Jerry was able to create his own plan that provides him with the ample time and grace necessary to be present for himself both personally and professionally. Who's Pat?! What happened years ago at the Rochester Hills Hometown Hustle?! What the hell is Plunder Panic? Who is Denny from DizRuns Radio and why should you be tuning in to his show?! Ummm, what is Salmon Sunday and are you invited?! Armada Michigan?! Harvard on the Rouge?! We double dipping quotes?! Wait is Jerry secretly grammin'?! In episode 6 of the PRP, Adam connects with first time marathoner, public health guru and vegan food blogger Kayla Romero who has been preparing for the Detroit Free Press Marathon on October 17th, 2021. Kayla sheds some insight on what inspired her to gear up for this challenge, how she decided to prepare and admits that perhaps there was a bit too much Googling done throughout the process. Kayla gets vulnerable as she takes listeners on the journey of her growth as a runner; from last summer, when a 10-miler was unthinkable, to this summer when she was knocking out double digit runs every weekend. Kayla's story is a text book example of the importance of a strong mental game when preparing to tackle a goal of this magnitude. As her training began to blossom, so did her perspective on what she felt was possible for her to accomplish. Guest host, Evan Romero, who is Kayla's husband enlightens listeners with the tale of how the two met back in college. Did someone say forbidden love? Evan is also a first time marathoner who is gearing up to run with Kayla in Detroit. Evan admits that although it was his original idea to run the marathon, Kayla has been the heart and soul of putting together the training plan and lining up their weekend long runs. The couple puts on an incredible display of how a healthy and productive relationship should function as it pertains to being involved in the same sport. The balancing act of of being competitive vs. being compassionate is a true art form, and the two seem to have cracked the code on knowing when to push each other vs. knowing when to have empathy for one another. To cap the episode Kayla, Evan and Adam take a deep dive into race morning "code brown" routines, and discuss how many poops is the right amount of poops before hitting the starting line. Are they single deucers, double deucers or perhaps triple deucers?! Tune in find out! If there is one thing I know about Lori Brauer, it's her enormous heart. You can feel it the moment you meet. For the past 15 years Lori has been engaged in work with non-profits, raising funds and attention for less than fortunate people and worthy causes. The other thing about Lori is that she is self-effacing. Her sense of humility comes out during our conversation as you'll hear, always giving credit to others and drawing it away from her. We also talk about Lori's entrepreneurial ethic of figuring things out even when she doesn't know a thing and is not afraid to dive in to make things happen for others. One of the tools in her quiver is story-telling, and we talk about how this essential entrepreneurial skill comes to play. Currently committed to a non-profit startup, the OMPT Foundation, whose goal is to provide the basis for even the most disadvantaged kids "to have a success story." OMPT Foundation is currently working with schools in the Ferndale, MI school system with basics: food, hats, gloves, socks, underwear. Lori's bent as an entrepreneur has helped the Foundation grow from just one to four schools in less than a year. We spend the beginning of the episode talking about this current work helping these kids and her history in non-profits, which include stints with the Michigan Council of Women in Technology and The Epilepsy Foundation of Michigan. Lori expresses her passion that even the smallest contribution helps. Lori's entre into the non-profit world was a natural extension of her running. A tragic family event while training for the Detroit Free Press Marathon led her to raising money for Multiple Sclerosis Society and running the marathon with the name of her sister-in-law written on the insoles of her shoes while calling on her spirit to help Lori through the long 26.2 miles. Ten years later, in prepping for a celebration for her 50th birthday, Lori decided she wanted to skydive. There was another family loss, this time her Dad was stricken with cancer. In true fashion, Lori decided again that "it can't just be without me." While mourning the loss of "my biggest fan", Lori raised money for both the American Cancer Society and the MS Foundation. And she did the jump: https://youtu.be/wxxwyJWaOkc. if you watch the video, you might even see Lori's husband Rick, whom I'm told wasn't as excited as Lori about jumping out of an airplane. Lori's passion for running comes back around when we turn to her work designing and making jewelry. As far as artists go, Lori is very kinesthetic. That's why, she says she was attracted to designing and making jewelry. I met Lori on the marathon expo circuit when she was selling running and other sport-themed jewelry she made at her workshop at home. We then turn to her sense of what motivates creatives and how to overcome blocks and her sense of what creatives do. Running comes up as a theme again when she met her husband Rick through a local running store and their mutual passion for running. In fact, Rick and Lori started the US arm of Parkrun, which started in the UK as a free, weekly timed 5k run. Since the very first Parkrun in Livonia's Bicentennial Park in 2012, it has grown to 41 different Parkruns in the US.

Episode #103: Julie Millen on running for others and logging 100 miles during Detroit Free Press Marathon weekend this October This October, during Detroit Free Press Marathon weekend Oct. 14-15, ultra runner and mom of five Julie Millen will take on her second 100-mile run—the Joules Athletics Warrior 100 Mile Run and Relay—to help raise funds for Brayden Trombley, an 8-year-old Mt. Pleasant, Mich. boy who has leukemia. This is not the first time (and definitely won't be the last) Julie is running for someone else. Spend any amount of time with Julie, a native Michigander now living in Houston, Texas, and you'll quickly realize how kind and giving—and humble—she is, not only as a runner, but as a human being. Her love of helping others is infectious and inspiring. She joins Heather in the studio—she and her family were vacationing in nearby Northport, Mich. this past month—to talk about the upcoming October run, which is totally self-supported and will coincide with the Detroit Free Press Marathon and Half Marathon. This is how it'll work (and anyone interested can join): A "base camp" will be at Brew Detroit, and runners will complete approximately 80 miles by running a 3/4 mile loop. Runners will leave Brew Detroit at 5 a.m. on Oct. 15 to run to the start of the Detroit Free Press Marathon and Half Marathon to complete the rest of the race. All solo runners and one relay runner must register for either the Detroit Free Press full or half marathon to complete the 100 mile run. Julie shares with Heather how she got started running, why Detroit will always be home to her, why going long (really long!) speaks to her heart, why she feels it's important to run for others, the individuals who have impacted her running journey, and so much more. In addition to running and raising a family, Julie also is the founder of a women's athletic clothing company, Joules Athletics.
