Although he found early success as a rapper, Travis Mills always liked the idea of being in a band. He grew up admiring blink-182, MxPx, and The Used. Early groups didn't work out for various reasons, and he found solo success with tracks like "Diemonds" and "Young & Stupid." In drummer Nick Gross, Mills found a musical partner with the drive to make their band a success. Together as girlfriends, the duo has embraced the music that shaped their youth. They enlisted producer John Feldmann, the Dr. Dre of pop punk, to complete their sound. Over two albums and an EP, they've created anthems that sound like artifacts of the early 2000s, rather than recreations of TRL rock. Their recent single "shut & kiss me" sounds like it could have been on the Road Trip soundtrack. It's the first new music for the band since the EP Over My Dead Body last May. This summer, girlfriends will join Avril Lavigne on her North American tour. Mills and Gross talk to Jordan Edwards about their experience with girlfriends, touring with Lavigne, and making music at The Noise Nest.

Over the past 499 episodes, Desmond Reddick has spoken with some interesting guests and cohosts, but this week, to celebrate the 500th episode of Dread Media, he decided to talk to the people who make it all worthwhile: the listeners. Dreadites of three different countries (four if you count a background chime-in) get their voices heard this episode with a wide-ranging variety of topics. Songs played this week: "Answering the Phone" by The Mountain Goats, "Gruesome" by Gruesome, "Get the Fuck Outta Here" by Diemonds, "Can't Stop the Monster Kids" by The Other, "Twin Peaks - Fire Walk with Me" by Fantomas, "For Fuck's Sake" by Nailbomb, "Carry the Coffin" by Ghoultown, "Boss DJ" by Sublime, and "Computer, this Is Not What I..." by Mutation. For the fourth consecutive year, the Canadian Decibel Geek team of Wallygator Norton and Rich "The Meister" Dillon, the Hoser Heavy Metal Twins, return to the Decibel Geek airwaves. In what has become a yearly tradition in which regular weekly podcast hosts, Chris and Aaron take their Thanksgiving off and the Canadians host the episode, the duo from The Great White North present an episode jam-packed with music from Canadian artists. Hoser Heavy Metal Hour Vol4 Due to schedule alignment issues, mainly caused by a trip to Tokyo, the boys were unable to record with their planned guest host in time. As a solution, they reached out to some of their favorite Canadian bands and artists, some popular and some more underground, and had them choose the music for this hour-plus episode. You'll hear tracks by Refugee, Rush, Public Animal, April Wine, A Foot in Cold Water and more as chosen by artists like Brian Vollmer (Helix), Sarasin, Gerry McGhee (Brighton Rock), Diemonds, A Rebel Few, and Shock. The holidays are over. For many of us, that means our loved ones who have become parasitic monsters in our homes have gone home. Well, this week, we look at some unwelcome visitors in the horror genre. First up, Desmond and Darryll love Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett's The Guest. They love it so much, that Darryll refuses to leave! Desmond invites Duane over, but he can only call in to review the last film Wingard and Barrett did together, You're Next, a very different uninvited guest film. Then, because not all victims of bad visitors are human, Desmond looks at Brian Kaufman's latest novella: The Wretched Walls. There are, of course, some songs to kick off your New Year as well: "Get the Fuck Outta Here" by Diemonds, "Uninvited Guest" by Mercyful Fate, "Looking for the Magic" by The Dwight Tilley Band, "Old House (Bark at the Moonlight)" by Man's Gin, and "We Destroy the Family" by Fear.
