In February 2011, I had the maven of mavens, Seth Godin, on the show to discuss the end of the industrial age. “So why are you so popular?” I asked the best-selling author, entrepreneur and teacher. “I notice things,” he explained. Luckily for all of us, nearly fourteen years later, Godin is still noticing things, especially the obvious stuff that most of us miss. The problem, as he notes in his new book, This is Strategy, is that we mostly think tactically and thus overlook the strategic insights that enable us to plan a good life for ourselves and our community. And so we struggle to establish agency over our own lives, which is a particular problem in what Godin calls our era of carbon & AI. That said, Godin remains cautiously optimistic about all of our futures because, as he asserts, “we are hardwired for hope”. I hope he's right - thereby probably proving his theory. Welcome to the What's Next! Podcast with Tiffani Bova.    This week I'm welcoming back a good friend and a fan-favorite on the What's Next! Podcast, Seth Godin. In this episode, I'm sharing our recent LinkedIn Live chat.    Seth is the author of 20 books that have been bestsellers around the world and have been translated into more than 40 languages. He writes about the post-industrial revolution, how ideas spread, marketing, quitting, leadership, and–most of all–changing everything. His latest book is The Song of Significance: A Manifesto for Teams.   You might be familiar with his books Linchpin, Tribes, The Dip, and, my favorite, Purple Cow. In addition to his writing and speaking, Seth founded both Yoyodyne and Squidoo.    His blog, which you can find simply by typing ‘Seth' into Google, is one of the most popular in the world. Seth is in the Guerrilla Marketing Hall of Fame, the Direct Marketing Hall of Fame, and most recently, the Marketing Hall of Fame.    THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… anyone who feels like we've largely lost the human element in our organizations.    TODAY'S MAIN MESSAGE… the role of the leader has gotten fuzzy over the years. The key responsibility is not to be the conduit between the stock market and the stock options but to create an environment that is generative and attracts people who can create an impact.    WHAT  I  LOVE  MOST… the distinction Seth makes between managers and leaders. He says managers use power and authority to tell people what to do while leaders explore the liminal state between here and there. Being a leader, that's the difficult part.    Running Time: 33:30   Subscribe on iTunes   Find Tiffani on Social: Facebook Twitter LinkedIn   Find Seth Online: Seth's Blog LinkedIn Instagram   Seth's Latest Book: The Song of Significance: A New Manifesto for Teams

Welcome to episode #883 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast - Episode #883. I could not tell you how many times Seth Godin has been a guest on this show. I don't say this to brag. I state this, because he has (truly) influenced everything from my thinking about work and the future, to how I've built worked on my own professional development and career (more on that here: Dear Seth Godin). As soon as I caught wind that he was publishing a new book, The Song Of Significance, I locked in a time for us to not only discuss this incredible book/manifesto about what it means to be human, to be a part of a team, and to make work that really matters, but to also drill down into how the world is changing (artificial intelligence, politics, work from home, being an entrepreneur and more). For those who don't know, Seth is an oracle. He has been sparking minds and inspiring people to level up for over three decades. His daily blog, a beacon of wisdom and insight, has been my constant in the ever-changing digital landscape for more than ten years (when he first started publishing). Seth is an artist with words. He's the author of 20 bestselling books, translated into nearly 40 languages. Also worth noting is his Carbon Almanac project. And Seth's journey isn't a straight path. It's filled with intriguing detours and exciting projects. In 2015, Seth brought to life the altMBA, a transformative 30-day workshop that's changed countless lives. It's part of Akimbo, an independently owned B corp, crafting innovative ways to learn. Seth's online courses, including The Marketing Seminar and several on Udemy, have been taken by over 60,000 people. He's a member of the Guerrilla Marketing Hall of Fame, the Direct Marketing Hall of Fame, and most recently, the Marketing Hall of Fame. Seth's free ebooks on the placebo effect and education are worth a read, and his five TED Talks are a must-watch. So, with that... let's get into his new book and the changing world of work, building a business worth working for and the future. Enjoy the conversation... Running time: 58:22. Seth Godin joins us for the kick-off episode of Season 5 to discuss his new book and project: The Carbon Almanac: It's Not Too Late. For the few who may not know, Seth is an internet pioneer, best-selling author of 20 books, host of the Akimbo podcast and one of the world's most sought-out keynotes speakers. Most importantly Steve was also best man at Seth's wedding. As individuals, citizens and members of the retail community we all have an opportunity and, one could say, an obligation, to address the climate crisis. We go beyond the myth of the "carbon footprint" to delve into the need for true systemic change and how that can be manifested. We also discuss the critical role for the retail industry in demonstrating sustainability leadership and talk about what brands like Patagonia are doing to make a difference. As usual, we kick things off with a fast-paced look into the big retail news of the week, including the need for the industry to "buckle up Buttercup" in the face of growing headwinds,  what to make of Kohl's being left at the alter and what Mark Triton's departure from Bed, Bath & Beyond means from the brand's future. Steve also predicts that some CEO's at digitally native vertical brands might want to update their resumes.Steve's Relevant Forbes ArticlesIs Kohl's New Strategy Merely A Slightly Better Version of Mediocre? Here's Why Amazon Should Buy Kohl's--with One Big CaveatAbout SethSeth Godin is an Author, Entrepreneur and Most of All, A teacherSeth is an entrepreneur, best-selling author, and speaker. Welcome to the What's Next! Podcast with Tiffani Bova for this What's Next! Reload.  This week I am bringing back an episode with my wonderful friend Seth Godin on the human side of business. Seth is the author of over 18 books that have been bestsellers around the world and been translated into more than 35 languages. He writes about the post-industrial revolution, the way ideas spread, marketing, quitting, leadership, and–most of all–changing everything. You might be familiar with his books Linchpin, Tribes, The Dip, and, my favorite, Purple Cow. In addition to his writing and speaking Seth founded both Yoyodyne and Squidoo. His blog, which you can find him by typing Seth into Google, is one of the most popular in the world and he was recently inducted into the Direct Marketing Hall of Fame–one of three chosen for this honor in 2013.    THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… humans is sales and marketing.    TODAY'S MAIN MESSAGE… Seth loves to talk about making something happen. He is a huge fan of doing the right thing in business. The “right thing” means not caring about stock options or your career and still caring about what you're making.  He promotes focusing on service to deliver consistently and maintains that great marketers should spread ideas, not make sales.  Your job as the marketer is not to sell what the factory makes, but to serve the people the company seeks to serve. This is the human side of business.       WHAT  I  LOVE  MOST… Seth's advice for the new marketer and what to do if you feel trapped and/or like you aren't doing good work.    Running time: 34:48     Subscribe on iTunes     Find Tiffani on social:  Facebook  Twitter  LinkedIn     Find Seth on social:  Twitter  Instagram  LinkedIn

Seth Godin is a best-selling author, entrepreneur, speaker, and, above all else, a teacher who gives people the tools they need to make the impactful changes they want to see in the world. By focusing on everything from effective marketing and leadership, to the spread of ideas, Seth has been able to motivate and inspire countless people around the world. He is a global thought-leader on the post-industrial revolution, how ideas disseminate, marketing, quitting, leadership, and most of all, changing everything including the uneven distribution of food, unequal access to medicine, and our energy system. Seth has famously made the bold statement that climate change is a marketing problem, not a technology problem. His blog on marketing, tribes, and respect was named by Time among its 25 best blogs. In addition to launching one of the most popular blogs in the world, Seth has written 20 best-selling books addressing various aspects of marketing, advertising, business venturing, and leadership, including The Dip, Linchpin, Purple Cow, Tribes, and What To Do When It's Your Turn (And It's Always Your Turn). His books, This is Marketing, was an instant bestseller in countries around the world. Free Prize Inside was a Forbes Business Book of the Year in 2004, while Purple Cow sold over 150,000 copies in more than 23 print runs in its first two years. The Dip was a Business Week and New York Times bestseller; Business Week also named Linchpin among its "20 of the best books by the most influential thinkers in business" on November 13, 2015. Seth is also known as "the ultimate entrepreneur for the information age". Though renowned for his writing and speaking, he also founded two companies, Squidoo and Yoyodyne. Yoyodyne, launched in 1995, used contests, online games, and scavenger hunts to market companies to participating users. In August 1996, Flatiron Partners invested $4 million in Yoyodyne in return for a 20% stake. At Yoyodyne, Godin published Permission Marketing: Turning strangers into friends and friends into customers which describes and promotes a non-traditional marketing technique that advertises goods and services when advance consent is given. In 1998, Seth sold Yoyodyne to Yahoo! for about $30 million and became Yahoo's vice president of direct marketing. In March 2006, Godin launched Squidoo, a revenue-sharing writing site and by July 2008, Squidoo was one of the 500 most visited sites in the world. Godin raised more than $250,000 from readers with a Kickstarter campaign In June 2013, which in turn secured him a book contract with his publisher for his book "The Icarus Deception." He was also one of just three professionals inducted into the Direct Marketing Hall of Fame. In an astonishing turn of events, in May 2018, he was inducted into the Marketing Hall of Fame as well. He might be the only person in both. "This world is changing faster than it has changed in 10,000 years. The real urgency in front of us is to get clear about what the change we seek to make is and who we seek to change, that it might feel good to push people to use grocery bags that can be reused 100 times instead of 30 times. But it feels to me like it's way more urgent to stop mining coal. And we have just got to come up with our priority list. Be really clear about how we're going to tell stories around those things. So that urgently people decide that they were right all along, in wanting this problem to go away. They were right all along and choosing to act a certain way. And people like us, we do things like this. What are those things? And we're missing that component right now of passionate, generous, dignified storytelling." This week, The Entrepreneurial You podcast celebrates 200 episodes and Seth Godin joins Host, Heneka Watkis-Porter for a second appearance to celebrate. Seth is the embodiment of ruckus, generosity and creativity. Listen to this powerful conversation surrounding how to ‘just do it.' You don't need the approval of anyone to create your ‘ruckus' but you must start. Doing the LIVE conversation was super amazing. Thanks to all who joined us live and to you who will listen after.   HERE ARE THREE REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD LISTEN TO THE FULL EPISODE: Find out what the most Jamaican thing Seth ever did. Discover how to "pick yourself." Learn what it means to do the "practice." EPISODE SOUND BITE Every Blog Starts With Fewer Than 100 Readers "It's easy for somebody to say you can do X Y or Z because you're your Seth. But they weren't around when I got 800 rejection letters in a row and was eating black beans and rice every day because I wasn't Seth. And when my blog started, the first 200 posts had fewer than 100 readers. Every blog starts with fewer than 100 readers. Every PODCAST starts with fewer than 100 listeners that's the only way it can start.   Different People Will Find Different Fuel Every day I say what would my mom and dad be proud of if I did this and every day I say what did all the people who open the door for me, what do they need from me today that's my fuel. Different people are going to find different fuel. But I believe there is an endless amount of enthusiasm and momentum and reserve if we just tap into the people who came before...   The Roadmap? The number of roadmaps in the world is close to infinite. First, you have to decide where you want to go. So if I said to you, how do I get to Kingston. Well, we can look at Google Maps; we can look at Bing; we can look at Rand McNally. Finding the map is pretty straightforward. The hard part is deciding to go to Kingston, committing to go to Kingston, saying, I'm going to get from here to there. And that's the thing we ignore because everyone's afraid of failing. Everyone says show me the proof of all the steps. Exactly, the guarantee that I'm going to get from here to there and that's not how it works, so, you know, Miles Davis was first, and the one and only and recorded the bestselling Jazz album of its time in four days. No guarantees right. When Bob Marley showed up and did the work he did, there was no model. There was no do it exactly like this. Chris Blackwell helped but it was Bob believe." ABOUT SETH GODIN Seth is actually a repeat guest on The Entrepreneurial You podcast. He is an entrepreneur, best-selling author, and speaker. Seth Godin is an elite entrepreneur and the author of 19 best-selling books, including The Dip, Purple Cow, and, most recently, This is Marketing. He is a prolific blogger and has written over 7500 blog posts. In 2013, Seth was one of just three professionals inducted into the Direct Marketing Hall of Fame, and five years later he also earned a spot in the Marketing Hall of Fame. He teaches a variety of workshops, including his life-changing altMBA program, and hosts the renowned Akimbo podcast. In this episode… In 2020, personal injury attorneys are having a hard time differentiating their practice from the hundreds of others in the industry. Many are screaming on TV, rolling out billboards, and blasting ads with little to show for their efforts. But what if there was a tried and true way to make your personal injury law firm remarkable? According to elite entrepreneur and best-selling author Seth Godin, the problem with marketing a personal injury law firm is that the clients aren't as knowledgeable about the practices of the industry. This means that personal injury victims may not know when to seek out justice, and, even when they do, they tend to feel alone before, during, and after the legal process. This creates a unique opportunity for personal injury lawyers to differentiate themselves by addressing the unique challenges of their clients—even if it means niching down to the smallest viable market. In this episode of The Rankings Podcast, host Chris Dreyer sits down with renowned blogger, entrepreneur, and speaker Seth Godin to talk about how to make your personal injury law firm remarkable. They discuss how the “purple cow” analogy relates to law firms, the best strategies for differentiating your practice, and which marketing books you should pick up today. Stay tuned.

What is your idea of marketing? If you think it's merely promoting a product and persuading people into buying it, think again. Marketing Hall of Famer Seth Godin believes marketing should go deep into what your customers believe in, identify as, and the narrative they tell themselves when they purchase your product or service. Episode 492 of The (award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing Show is a stimulating conversation with Seth, as he explains why marketing is work that matters for people who care. I guarantee you'll get fresh perspectives and inspiring marketing advice from this episode. Make sure to tune in to find out the truths about marketing and how you can be successful in it. About Seth Godin Seth Godin is an author, entrepreneur and most of all, a teacher. Seth is an entrepreneur, best-selling author, and speaker. In addition to launching one of the most popular blogs in the world, he has written 19 best-selling books, including The Dip, Linchpin, Purple Cow, Tribes, and What To Do When It's Your Turn (And It's Always Your Turn). His most recent book, This is Marketing, was an instant bestseller in countries around the world. Though renowned for his writing and speaking, Seth also founded two companies, Squidoo and Yoyodyne (acquired by Yahoo!). By focusing on everything from effective marketing and leadership, to the spread of ideas and changing everything, Seth has been able to motivate and inspire countless people around the world. In 2013, Seth was one of just three professionals inducted into the Direct Marketing Hall of Fame. In an astonishing turn of events, in 2018, he was inducted into the Marketing Hall of Fame as well. He might be the only person in both. Seth's riffs on marketing for small business What is marketing? ‘Marketing is the generous act of helping someone solve a problem—their problem'. It has to do with whether you have earned trust and attention by making a promise and keeping it. ‘Marketing is work that matters for people who care'. Marketing is the story that you live and being able to identify who it is for. ‘Marketing helps others become who they seek to become'. It is not advertising, and it is not concerned with trivial hype. Some of Seth's important ideas What you need to do is to matter, even if only for a few specific people. You should have empathy for customers and strive to give them what they need. ‘Price is the last refuge for the marketer who has nothing better to say'. Your goal should be for your past clients to be confident in vouching for you. ‘The magic of a small business is not to pretend that we're a big business that got shrunk. The magic of small businesses is to embrace the fact that we don't need to be Walmart to be happy'. If you figure out who your base is, you need to make things for that group of people. Standing out VS Being remarkable Standing out is easy to attain, but it won't give you the following you seek. ‘Being remarkable means that the people you care about will talk about you to other people you care about, and they'll talk about you in a positive way that causes forward motion'. Being remarkable is self-cleaning and self-limiting. The right marketing attitude Don't become selfish and cut corners because that becomes a problem. Don't try to persuade people to go to you. Instead, make sure that enough people are already going to you regardless. It's all in the belief in the product and not the product itself. What story are you letting people tell themselves? Social media marketing Remember that you are not the customer. You, your data and your attention are the product. Buy attention only when you have to; earn and treasure attention when you can so it doesn't cost you. What your audience wants you to do is to lead them and connect them. Stay true to yourself by not conforming to the feedback of people whom your content is not intended for. There is no such thing as authenticity. Everyone is playing a role. Seth is an entrepreneur, best-selling author, and speaker.  He has written 19 best-selling books, publishes one of the most popular marketing blogs, and speaks to audiences around the world. He also founded two companies, Squidoo and Yoyodyne which was acquired by Yahoo.  Seth has been inducted into both the Direct Marketing Hall of Fame and the Marketing Hall of Fame. His latest book is called This Is Marketing: You Can't Be Seen Until You Learn to See.    Some interesting insights from this episode:  In the old days, money bought you attention and you could use that attention to grow your business. Today attention is too precious for you to buy at any cost.   Being an effective marketer in this day and age means having the empathy to see what the other person dreams of and what they fear.  Since 1997 not one significant brand has been built with consumer advertising.  There's no longer any advantage to being a mass marketer. There's only an advantage to being a very specific marketer.   If you build a network effect, if you understand people's status roles, if you engage with people where they need to be, with a product or service that helps them get to where they want to go, that is marketing.  Marketing is about how human beings are going to interact with what you make and whether or not they will talk about it and miss you if you're gone.  The mistake most marketers make is to sell average stuff for average people in an attempt to appease everyone. But what's most important for brand building today is to find a “minimal viable market”. The idea is to pick the smallest possible group of people that can sustain you and delight them so they will then tell their friends and spread the word.  A brand is not a logo. Rather, a brand is a promise, an expectation of what you're going to get.  People don't generally know what they want. It's our job to watch people, figure out what they dream of, and then create a transaction that can deliver that feeling.

You're listening to the 64th episode of the Humans 2.0 podcast, solo-series, FLOW! I'm recording today's episode on what I learned from my Seth Godin experience. Seth Godin is the author of nineteen international bestsellers and demi-god of the internet that have been translated into over 35 languages, and have changed the way people think about marketing and work. For a long time, Unleashing the Ideavirus was the most popular ebook ever published, and Purple Cow is the bestselling marketing book of the decade. He's a recent inductee to the Marketing Hall of Fame, and also a member of the Direct Marketing Hall of Fame and (go figure), the Guerrilla Marketing Hall of Fame. His book, Tribes, was a nationwide bestseller, appearing on the Amazon, New York Times, BusinessWeek and Wall Street Journal bestseller lists. It's about the most powerful form of marketing--leadership--and how anyone can now become a leader, creating movements that matter. His book Linchpin came out in 2008 and was the fastest selling book of his career. Linchpin challenges you to stand up, do work that matters and race to the top instead of the bottom. More than that, though, the book outlines a massive change in our economy, a fundamental shift in what it means to have a job.Since Linchpin, Godin has published two more books, Poke the Box and We Are All Weird, through his Domino Project. He followed these with The Icarus Deception via Kickstarter, which reached its goal in less than three hours. Joined by Watcha Gonna Do With That Duck and V is for Vulnerable, those books are now widely available. In late 2014, he announced his latest, What To Do When It's Your Turn, sold directly from his website. In addition to his writing and speaking, Seth was founder and CEO of Squidoo.com,. His blog (find it by typing "seth" into Google) is the most popular marketing blog in the world. Before his work as a writer and blogger, Godin was Vice President of Direct Marketing at Yahoo!, a job he got after selling them his pioneering 1990s online startup, Yoyodyne.Seth Godin has taught and inspired millions of entrepreneurs, marketers, leaders, and fans from all walks of life, via his blog, online courses, lectures, and bestselling books. He is the inventor of countless ideas and phrases that have made their way into mainstream business language, from Permission Marketing to Purple Cow to Tribes to The Dip. Now, for the first time, Godin offers the core of his marketing wisdom in one compact, accessible, and timeless package. This is Marketing shows you how to do work you're proud of, whether you're a tech startup founder, a small business owner, or an executive at a large corporation. Great marketers don't use consumers to solve their company's problem; they use marketing to solve other people's problems. Their tactics rely on empathy, connection, and emotional labor instead of attention-stealing ads and spammy email funnels. When done right, marketing seeks to make change in the world. No matter what your product or service, this book will teach you how to reframe how it's presented to the world, in order to meaningfully connect with the people who want it. Seth employs his signature blend of insight, observation, and memorable examples to teach you:* How to build trust and permission with your target market.* The art of positioning--deciding not only who it's for, but who it's not for.* Why the best way to achieve your marketing goals is to help others become who they want to be.* Why the old approaches to advertising and branding no longer work. * The surprising role of tension in any decision to buy (or not).* How marketing is at its core about the stories we tell ourselves about our social status. You can do work that matters for people who care.Get Seth's Book: https://amzn.to/2DmIbqhWebsite: https://www.sethgodin.com/Please do NOT hesitate to reach out to me on LinkedIn, Instagram, or via email mark@vudream.comLinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-metry/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/markmetry/Twitter - https://twitter.com/markymetryMedium - https://medium.com/@markymetryFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/Humans.2.0.PodcastMark Metry - https://www.markmetry.com/Humans 2.0 Twitter - https://twitter.com/Humans2Podcast
