I'm back with Sam Thompson for part two of our two-part conversation (if you missed the first one, go check out Ep. #157). In this episode, Sam walks me through the custom task management app he built for himself using Lovable, and how it completely changed how he handles his time. We go deep on what makes good productivity tools and how to think like a “vibe coder”.We also talk about how he sold his AI cooking app, how he's helping someone scale it, and why more businesses should start fast, test faster, and sell what people are already asking for. Toward the end, we riff on why people always pay for shortcuts, from dunk training posters to rucking programs (PDF), and how momentum is the most underrated asset for entrepreneurs. You can find Sam on Twitter at @ImSamThompson and check out what he's building at unlimitedcontent.com.Timestamps below. Salespeople's biggest struggle isn't caring about what they sell, it's convincing prospects why THEY should care. There's a group of salespeople who are expert at selling ideas before anything tangible appears – and you've seen their work. To learn how to apply this expertise to our own sales process, we sat down with Julie Barlow and Jean-Benoit Nadeau, professional writers and small business coaches. They shared the techniques they've honed over careers of selling ideas and helped us build a system that any salesperson can use to show prospects why they should care about what we're selling. It's all in this week's Bulletproof Selling podcast!
Today's conversation is centered around The Back of the Napkin (Expanded Edition): Solving Problems and Selling Ideas with Pictures by Dan Roam
In today's leadership spark, I speak with Loran Nordgren, Professor at Kellogg School of Management. We dive deep into the concept of friction theory and the importance of focusing on barriers rather than just appeal in driving change and selling ideas. He emphasizes that while many people believe that elevating appeal and adding more value is the key to success, it is often the barriers or frictions that hold ideas back. Drawing an analogy to a bullet's flight, Loran explains that simply adding more gunpowder (fuel) does not help if the bullet lacks aerodynamics to reduce resistance. Similarly, in organizations, the key is to identify and address the frictions that hold ideas back. By making ideas more aerodynamic and removing barriers, real progress and growth can be achieved. ___________________ This episode is sponsored by AvePoint. So you're hoping to propel a cause into the public eye in a way that's thoughtful and effective? What do you do? For David Fenton, the longtime progressive PR guru who began his activist work in the late 1960s alongside figures like Abbie Hoffman and Yoko Ono, the answer has been to stick to some simple rules: straightforward and understandable messaging, repetition, effective storytelling, and the other principles that he lays out in his book, The Activist's Media Handbook. We spoke about his activist origin story and how he's paying forward his decades of experience, as well as how he's continuing to put the PR rules he writes about into practice to fight climate change. How do you show you care? Sometimes simple is better. In fact there are a few simple things you can do that can have a huge impact on someone else. I begin this episode with those things which I am sure will come in handy at some point in your life. https://news.butler.edu/blog/2012/01/5-surprising-ways-to-show-your-love/ When you want to make a point or sell your idea or convince someone of something – nothing can do it like a picture. But what if you suck as an artist? Well, according to Dan Roam, that doesn’t matter. Any picture is better than no picture at all. Dan is the author of the book, Back of the Napkin: Solving Problems and Selling Ideas with Pictures (https://amzn.to/2PwDRsc). He joins me to explain the science of why visual representations (pictures) can be so much more powerful than words. As the saying goes – a picture is worth a thousand words. When you hear Dan you will understand just how true that is. Even if your artistic skills are less than impressive. So here is something I am sure has happened to you… you take your clothes or towels out of the dryer and you find a bleach stain. But you didn’t use bleach in the laundry, so how could you have a bleach stain? Well, it happens all the time. I’ll explain why and how to prevent it. http://www.realsimple.com/home-organizing/cleaning/bleach-stains-towels Do gentlemen prefer blondes? Do high heels really make women more attractive? Can the scent you give off actually repel some people while attracting others? Jena Pincott has the answers to these and other questions about human attraction. Jena tells the story of how she had to break up with a guy just because of his scent. He didn’t smell bad – it was just his natural scent she couldn’t stand. You have to hear the story. Jena is author of the book, Do Gentlemen Really Prefer Blondes?: Bodies, Behavior, and Brains–The Science Behind Sex, Love, & Attraction (https://amzn.to/2ByZpS2). I think you’ll enjoy what she has to say. PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS! https://bestfiends.com Download Best Fiends FREE today on the Apple App Store or Google Play. Kip Ioane, Special Situations We Aren’t Prepping For Guest: Kip Ioane, Willamette Basketball Head Coach In this week’s coaching conversation, Willamette head coach Kip Ioane joins the Basketball Podcast to discuss special situations we aren't prepping for. His "Teams of Men" program that the Willamette men's basketball team has put into action in recent years is designed to develop character among Bearcat basketball players and is discussed at length on the podcast. Kip Ioane (pronounced "eye-own") is in his 11th season as the head coach of the men’s basketball team at Willamette University in 2019-20. He is in his 19th season on the coaching staff, including eight years as an assistant coach under Gordie James prior to being named the head coach when James retired prior to the 2009-10 season. Off the court, Ioane’s basketball program sets out to develop men of character, create a family and build a legacy — in that order. In this episode, I will highlight some of the useful life tips I’ve picked up from various books over the years. Here are 11 quotes that capture the tips: Demote the importance of email. Your inbox is other people’s priorities (Craig Jarrow, Time Management Ninja) To make networking successful, follow up is everything (Jayson Gaignard, MastemindTalks). Scaling requires grinding it out and pressing each person, team, group, division or organization to make one small change after another (Robert Sutton, Hayagreeva Rao, “Scaling Up Excellence”) . Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain – and most fools do (Dale Carnegie, “How to Win Friends and Influence People”) Unless you give at least forty-five minutes to careful, fatiguing reflection (it is an awful bore at first) upon what you are reading, your ninety minutes a night [of reading] are chiefly wasted (Arnold Bennett, “How to Live on 24 Hours a Day”). The acid test for creativity is simply stated: has the domain in which you operate been significantly altered by your contribution? (Howard Gardner, “Five Minds for the Future”) Keeping things “just in case” indicates a lack of trust in the future…Good things cannot easily come into your life if you block the flow of energy by persistently clinging to outdated clutter (Karen Kingston, “Clear Your Clutter with Feng Shui”) Judging is what the mind does, I discovered. But what you can begin to do is write your judgments down and question them. That will give you a sane and happy life (Byron Katie, “Who Would You Be Without Your Story”). Great presenters have the ability to tell you something you already know, in a way that gives it new and more powerful meaning (Jon Steel, “Perfect Pitch: The Art of Selling Ideas and Winning New Business”). What we fear doing most is usually what we most need to do (Timothy Ferriss, “The 4-Hour Work Week”). “Politics is when people choose their words and actions based on how they want others to react rather than based on what they really think” (Patrick Lencioni, “The Five Dysfunctions of a Team: A Leadership Fable”). If you want someone to know you really care for them and that they are special to you, there are a few simple things you can do that can have a huge impact. I begin this episode with those things which I am sure will come in handy at some point in your life. http://www.caring.com/articles/5-surprising-actions-that-show-loveWhen you want to make a point or sell your idea or convince someone of something – nothing can do it like a picture. But what if you suck as an artist? Well, according to Dan Roam, that doesn’t matter. Any picture is better than no picture. Dan is the author of the book, Back of the Napkin: Solving Problems and Selling Ideas with Pictures https://amzn.to/2PwDRsc. I’ll explain why and how to prevent it. http://www.realsimple.com/home-organizing/cleaning/bleach-stains-towelsDo gentlemen prefer blondes? Do high heels really make women more attractive? Can the scent you give off actually repel some people while attracting others? Jena Pincott has the answers to these and other questions about human attraction. Jena tells the story of how she had to break up with a guy just because of his scent. He didn’t smell bad – it was just his natural scent she couldn’t stand. You have to hear the story. Jena is author of the book, Do Gentlemen Really Prefer Blondes?: Bodies, Behavior, and Brains--The Science Behind Sex, Love, & Attraction https://amzn.to/2ByZpS2. Dan Roam, Author of The Back of the Napkin How much would you pay to become creative and innovative? You may only need to pay $16.47. That's the Amazon price of Dan Roam's new book: The Back of the Napkin: Solving Problems and Selling Ideas with Pictures. Roam contends that any problem can be solved with what he calls "visual thinking," a simple system of drawing. Don't like your drawing ability? That's ok, because Roam says it's not artistic ability that matters. It's time to open your mind to new possibilities and opportunities with visual thinking.
