A petition has been launched to develop Clare's first ever dog park. It comes as Shannon residents are rallying for a dedicated facility for their four legged friends to serve the growing population. In July, the Shannon Municipal District passed a motion calling for a dog park to be established in the South-East Clare area. The local authority then promised to put together a committee in collaboration with community representatives that would aim to identify a site and appropriate funding streams that would bring the plans to fruition. A petition launched by local resident Margaret Curtin has since garnered 160 signatures. She believes the facility is essential and would serve as an important community hub. Between 2016 and 2022, Shannon's population grew by 10%, with over 10,200 people now residing in the town. Shannon Sinn Féin Representative Shane Doody says a dedicated space is urgently needed.

The guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Michelle O'Neil, author of the book Dog Park. Michelle also authored the memoir Daughter of the Drunk at the Bar. She has a background as a freelance writer in Washington DC, and her work has been featured in Literary Mama, Brain Child, Age of Autism, The Bark!, Cool Cleveland, and other publications. She is an RN, BSN, and teaches yoga in a large retirement community in SC. In her book review, guest-host Carole O'Neill stated Dog Park: Tales of Heartbreak, Laughter, Community and Hope is a wonderful contemporary fiction. You don't even have to like dogs to enjoy this book. Every time I drive by the dog park in our neighborhood, I try to imagine the stories playing out among the owners. Michelle has captured the socialization happening within those fences. From widows using the park to prevent an otherwise lonely afternoon, to the young girl escaping the abuse of her father, each story will make you realize there is more going on than what first meets the eye. The optimism, strength and sadness I read about throughout the book gave me a new outlook on the pet owners who spend time at the park – an actual community behind the gate. O'Neil's characters are engaging, full of engaging backstories. I haven't had a dog for many years, but this book has given me a reason to revisit that decision. Kewanee Parks Director Andy Dwyer joined Wake Up Tri-Counties to explain the reasons why motorized or electric scooters, bikes, golf carts, skateboards, and similar devices are banned in Windmont Park; the dog park grand opening on July 3rd; the splash pad update; the wiffle ball league; and the movie in the park on June 27th. A host of changes and new activities are underway in Kewanee parks. The Park District has issued an immediate ban on motorized and electric scooters, bikes, and similar devices at Windmont Park, citing ongoing safety concerns. Only manually powered options are permitted, with pedestrians prioritized on all paths. Meanwhile, anticipation is growing for the Chautauqua Park dog park's grand opening on July 3rd at 10 AM, providing a vibrant social space for dogs and their owners alike. The splash pad's debut depends on weather-related delays, and registration is open for a new wiffle ball league beginning July 13th. Visit the district's website and Facebook page for more details.

What if your house changed colors like a mood ring? A viral innovation is making that dream real with climate-responsive paint—developed by a guy inspired by mood rings and temperature swings. It shifts from dark to light depending on the weather, and the internet is loving it (and also wondering what happens when it starts peeling). Then, from high-tech homes to low-volume parks: A dog park in Montreal is going viral for issuing fines up to $2,000 if your dog barks, whines, or howls. The team can’t stop laughing at the irony—especially since barking is kind of the point of a dog park. Naturally, this leads to a hilarious debate about noise complaints, pop patrols, and parking ticket cops trying to flex too hard. If it's trending, Nina’s talking about it—and this episode is packed with innovation, absurd regulations, and that one guy who's just a little too excited to give you a ticket. Nina's What's Trending is your daily dose of the hottest headlines, viral moments, and must-know stories from The Jubal Show! From celebrity gossip and pop culture buzz to breaking news and weird internet trends, Nina’s got you covered with everything trending right now. Mount Jackson's parks and recreational areas are booming with new developments. In this episode of The Valley Today, host Janet Michael invited Olivia Hilton, the town manager, to provide all the inside details. Initially approved in January, the master park and pedestrian connectivity plan, or MP3, is Olivia's primary focus. It all starts with Lions Park, the main community park, which is set to have a new entrance from Route 263 and better restroom facilities. Additionally, the park has expanded by 20 acres, thanks to strategic land acquisitions. The new Jacktown Bark Park for dog owners is also a hit. Located downtown on King Street, it's designed to be a convenient and enjoyable space for local residents. It's equipped with artistic installations, water fountains, shade, and benches, as well as plans for future expansions based on community feedback. The grand opening will be held on Saturday, June 28th from noon til 3pm. The celebration will feature local groomers, baby pools, and plenty of treats for dogs and their owners. Red Banks Park is another significant project in the works. The park will offer 11.5 acres of river access, complete with parking, restrooms, picnic spaces, and fishing drop-ins. It's all part of the town's broader goal to connect various green spaces through pedestrian paths and crosswalks, creating a comprehensive outdoor experience for residents. Mount Jackson's community engagement doesn't stop at parks. The monthly farmers market, organized by the Mount Jackson Hometown Partnership, offers local produce, crafts, and baked goods. The town also supports a vibrant library program and summer events that aim to bring the community together. Looking forward, Mount Jackson plans to host movie nights and continue its crowd-pleasing Tater Fest. This festival, which celebrates the town's famous Route 11 potato chips, will feature quirky events like mashed potato sculpting competitions and the hilariously unpredictable cow pie bingo. Olivia announces that the event will always be held on the 4th Saturday of September, so mark your calendars now for September 27, 2025. As Olivia continues to lead the town towards recreational and communal harmony, residents eagerly anticipate each new development, proving that in Mount Jackson, there's always something fun and engaging to look forward to. Kewanee Parks District Director Andy Dwyer and intern and University of Illinois baseball player Coltin Quagliano joined Wake Up Tri-Counties to talk about the splash pad, dog park, Northeast Pool, baseball clinic with Coltin, and golf league. The splash pad and dog park are weeks away from completion, depending on the weather. Andy talked about opening the pool in Northeast Park and what is required to open the pool. The temperatures prevented the pool from opening by Memorial Day this year, but the Oasis swimming pool officially opened on Saturday, May 31st. Once the pool opens, staff are needed to maintain the pool and pool house, lifeguards need to be on duty when the pool is open, and supplies are needed to keep the pool water safe. Coltin Quagliano plays baseball for the University of Illinois. Coltin graduated from Wethersfield High School in 2021 and started his college baseball career at Illinois Central College in East Peoria. Coltin is a senior and in his third year playing baseball for the University of Illinois. Coltin is an intern this summer for the Kewanee Park District. He will provide one-on-one instruction in baseball and softball, as well as organize and conduct a two-day baseball clinic over the summer. Coltin has held baseball clinics in Kewanee in past years, but this year he will be hosting the clinic in partnership with the Kewanee Park District. Stay tuned to the Kewanee Park District Facebook page for information as it becomes available.
