Follow the AstroGuy on his eclipse adventure that involved more than 24 hours of driving, 2 countries, clouds, clear skies, LOTS of traffic, totality and more! Thank you to Donna Harris, Scott Badger, Bill Griffeth and Bobby Marinov for their spectacular images of the eclipse. Something is a little different about this episode. Normally, I work from a script, but for this episode, I worked off of an outline. So, please forgive any extraneous “ums” and the like.
In this episode of the podcast, host Roger Knecht engages in a dynamic conversation with Donna Harris, founder of Bookkeeping Made Simple. Together, they dive deep into her journey of starting an accounting business and navigating the life changes that come with being an entrepreneur. This is a great look at how professionals from all walks of life become accounting entrepreneurs, as well as how it's possible to achieve the work/life balance you desire at the owner of your firm. Your Host: Roger Knecht, president of Universal Accounting Center Guest Name: Donna Harris Donna founded Bookkeeping Made Simple with the understanding that small businesses are the heart of the American economy. After offering to do books for a friend who said he didn't have enough work to keep someone in the office 20 hours a week, she recognized the need for an efficient, online system. She has 20 years of bookkeeping and accounting experience and is excited to help small business owners achieve their goals. She enjoys spending time with her family and traveling whenever possible. She is the firstborn of eight children and a mother to five. She also loves hiking, camping, cooking, yoga, and fitness. A huge believer in lifelong education, she recently earned her MBA and is currently working on her Master's of Accounting. Highlights: Donna shares her journey from studying Computer Science in college to working with family members and acquaintances who needed bookkeeping services at their companies. The only problem, they said, was that there wasn't enough work to hire someone full time. Donna saw opportunity and founded Bookkeeping Made Simple. They discuss the value of niching, and specifically the opportunity that exists in working with solopreneurs or micropreneurs, who may not have the resources to hire big accounting firms. Donna reveals the challenges that come with being a single mother and starting a business, including developing boundaries and a comfortable work/life balance. Starting an accounting business and working from home allowed her to homeschool her kids. Roger and Donna explore how Donna's upbringing motivated her to work hard and live up to her responsibility to care for those in her life as a professional. They emphasize the difference in tax code for large corporations like Amazon and Space X compared to small businesses, to whom saving money and cash flow are of paramount importance. Donna introduces specific examples of how she navigates communicating with clients and offers strategies for identifying transactions, like using a SharePoint folder to upload receipts. They share insights on how aspiring entrepreneurs can start an accounting business, a bookkeeping business, or a tax business, and highlight the importance of learning bookkeeping online and taking online tax courses. Donna explains the importance of taking a step back from the business and trusting your employees to handle business on their own when personal or family issues require attention outside of the business. Notable Quotes from this episode: “I've been reading a lot in the industry news that there's a real shortage of accountants and accounting professionals. I know everyone has a hard time finding employees because no one really wants to go into the field or they think that we're all going to be replaced by AI. I don't see that happening. There's too many judgment calls and accounting.” “I saw firsthand how entrepreneurship really is the backbone of America… I think that's what really drove me to choose the very small businesses as a niche.” “I know a lot of big businesses are really, really pushing a return to the office and I think those are going to be the ones that get left behind.. I think working from home, remote work is an expectation now.” “The most common misconception is that I'm a CPA. I am not. I have a bachelor's in accounting and I have an MBA, but I have never fulfilled the requirements to have a CPA license and I don't need it. I don't do auditing and I don't work with publicly traded firms, so why go to all that trouble?” “The client, they don't know what they don't know. We have to be very upfront and tell them, we need these bank statements and this bank access from this date to this date, we need these receipts. And this is why.” Join Roger and Donna in this thought-provoking discussion as they highlight the momentous opportunity that exists for accounting professionals with an entrepreneurial spirit. Discover the ability that anyone with a basic understanding of accounting has to help business owners in their community with their books. If you're considering starting an accounting business, a bookkeeping business, or a tax business, or if you want to learn bookkeeping online and explore online tax courses, this episode is packed with valuable insights for aspiring entrepreneurs. A little under 15 years ago, Donna Harris made history when she was hired to be the president of Minnehaha Academy — a private, pre-K-12 Christian school in Minneapolis. Harris became the first woman and the first person of color to lead the school in its 100-year-plus history, but her path to lead the Christian academy wasn't something she planned. Before, Harris was working as an assistant superintendent in northern California, also with Christian roots, until she started to receive a number of recruitment messages from Minnehaha Academy. The phone calls were often brushed off, until she decided to visit the Minnesota school and she saw what it was all about. The academy left an impression on her and she says she could not get the academy out of her mind. Gallery: Minnehaha Academy Harris has said that she answered “a calling” to lead the academy. In 2017 one of the most traumatic chapters unfolded in the school's history. A massive explosion killed two beloved staffers and leveled the middle section of the academy's high school. MPR News host Angela Davis talks to Donna Harris about her leadership at Minnehaha Academy and guiding the school through some of its challenging moments — rebuilding from the 2017 explosion and the COVID-19 pandemic. Guests: Donna Harris is the president of Minnehaha Academy. She holds a doctorate in education. The business of veterinary medicine has evolved greatly over the past few decades. With the pandemic, the increase in technology, and more, the veterinary industry is constantly having to pivot—and with that, the schools are having to change how they're teaching students. So, how has the business of veterinary medicine developed, and what does this mean for the future of veterinary care? Joining us to discuss these topics and more are Donna Harris, Assistant Professor at Michigan State University, and Peter Weinstein, President of Simple Solutions for Vets. You can find show notes and more at: https://bit.ly/3RtqSqu
Veterinary practices have been busier than ever since the beginning of the pandemic. Due to this increase in transactions, the inefficiency of the veterinary business model was exposed. There was more money coming in, but there was also a lot more stress put on the vets and nurses. So, how can we find the perfect middle ground between profitability, sustainability, and work-life balance? In this second half of our two-part episode, Donna Harris, Assistant Professor at Michigan State University, and Peter Weinstein, President of Simple Solutions for Vets, answer this key question and more. If you are a committed coach in a relationship you are going to want to listen to this podcast. If you are the committed spouse or partner of a coach you are really going to want to listen to this podcast... In this, the first in a two part series of EvelChat, Derek talks to Donna Kaye-Harris, lifelong coach, sport builder & researcher, on interviews she did with 10 Olympic coaches & their partners prior to the 2016 Rio Games. In part 1 we discuss the feedback from the data on the partners of coaches, in part 2 we discuss the data from the coaches themselves. Donna interviewed each person in the cohort separately & independently, collecting feedback on how the coaching profession (obsession?) has impacted their partnership, family life, health and other important areas. While her findings are unpublished, her raw data, easily digestible & organized around quotes from both the coach & partner, can be viewed https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1jlychd2TdCh-GAzPvBDBei7UN-Oy2MoH?usp=sharing (here.) This is a fascinating discussion on the impact coaching has on a marriage, partnership, relationship and family and should not be missed. Donna Harris, ChPC, is a Chartered Professional Coach skilled in program development and implementation. She holds a Master of Arts in Kinesiology; her thesis explored the impact of passion on the performance and lives of elite coaches and their partners. The research outcomes lend insight into the requirements high performers need to be successful as well as the impact being a high performer has on the individual, their partner and their family. The architect behind Athletics Canada's revised coaching education program, she understands the components of performance and the steps necessary to draw out the best from everyone. Topics: “They're not quite present in family life” “Knowing that you're second place” “I got to go, I went to Beijing, I went to Athens” “The coach's career trumps my career” “You're not really making a lot of the decisions that affect your life” “Worrying (about job security) doesn't really help a whole lot” “It's a job of passion, not a job you count hours” “. . .and then it consumes you” “Tell me a coach that was great and had good work-life balance”

Welcome to A Counselors Journey To Private Practice. I'm your host, Juan.About Donna Harris-RichardsDonna Harris-Richards LICSW, CST is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker and AASECT Certified Sex Therapist and Couples Therapist located in the charming New England coastal seaport city of New Bedford, MA. Born and raised in New York City, she's a sex-positive sex therapist with a mission to help individuals, couples and families embrace and integrate sex-positive thinking into daily life for optimal health, including sexual health and wellness. She says, “We go for annual mammograms, gynecological exams and prostate exams for physical sexual health. We owe ourselves check-ups on the emotional and mental aspects of sexual health for optimal health and wellness.” Listen to her podcasts and read her blogs at www.sexandcouplestherapy.comHome VisitsDonna did a lot of home visits. It was suitable for her clients. Also, it helped keep her census up. Sometimes people couldn't get to the office. So she would need to go to them. It's all about meeting our clients where our clients are at. However, it was a struggle. At some points, Donna struggled with being a sex therapist and having the private practice in her home. There's no sex that takes place in the office, there's no touching, there's none of that. Of course, those clear boundaries will keep your practice extremely ethical and establish transparency with folks.Trust Yourself Donna wishes that she hadn't waited too long to trust herself and feel good about the work she was doing. Getting started is slow. There are a lot of people in the world who really don't think they need to change. It can be hard to trust these types of people. Sadly, these people are not curious enough. They're a little rigid; they're a bit too furious. Most people need to take time to figure out how to step into themselves and become more confident. The more competent you become, the more confident you become. As a therapist, Donna says to trust the process. Tune in as we chat about having better boundaries with clients, outsourcing marketing in your private practice, and why Donna stopped taking insurance. with guest Donna Harris, Praxis | Builders and Backers Afghanistan's drug economy is one of the most lucrative in the country. But what happens when a new business provides communities with jobs cultivating tea as an alternative agriculture? That's when you get something truly helpful: “redemptive entrepreneurship”. In this episode, Donna Harris of Praxis talks about “redemptive entrepreneurship” and how this can be embedded into the bones of a business with a desire to help—it's not just about making money and giving part of it away; it's about structuring a business to meet the needs of its community. "You can build beautiful things, and you can be a leader that exhibits kindness and concern as well as grows a highly scalable business. It's a different way to think about the gift that entrepreneurship can be in the world". Donna is a prairie girl who grew up in small towns in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. An RCMP kid, her family moved several times through elementary school and middle school. In addition to always feeling like the “new” kid, she was also one of the only students to blend a commitment to sport and music, a sometimes challenging combination that would prepare her for the balancing act that would become her life. After university, her journey involved working and coaching at the national level in sport. A decision to walk away from a national team coaching pathway coupled with illness from stress due to a life load that was out of control led to graduate research that uncovered the role of culture, recovery, and connection play in sustaining performance. The research, while rooted in sport, has applications across many contexts. One of Donna's biggest takeaways from the research was the discovery that we usually see leaders (in the case of the research, this was coaches) as one dimensional. We don't realize that there is a whole other dimension or dimensions to that person and a group of people who share that human, their human (partner, parent, friend, sibling, child) with the world, thus enabling them to lead or coach. When we learn to see people multidimensional, we have the opportunity to really see them, to understand them, and to connect with them. When this happens, we not only help them be at their best; we also uncover the heroes in our midst.

Andy Crouch interviews Donna Harris, Founder of Builders + Backers, a movement of community-focused entrepreneurs. They discuss the biblical practice of lament as an essential step to deal faithfully and productively with the uncertainty and loss that all of us face in a worldwide pandemic. Lament is an encounter with God that precedes redemptive action. In lament we approach God in a way that “enfolds complaint with trust” in his sovereignty and goodness. Donna discusses a six-part flow of lament: 1. Crying out to God2. Affirming trust in God3. Petitioning God to restore 4. Making additional arguments5. Expressing rage against loss and injustice6. Praising God in assurance of his promises to hear us Donna's main thesis is that lament is not only essential for processing our grief, but also for effective problem-solving and creative action in the face of crisis. She reveals how lament has fueled the Be a Neighbor Campaign, which mobilizes volunteers and entrepreneurs to serve needs and solve problems created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Approval is something we all long for. We long to be found as enough, as acceptable, as good. In fact, it's not whether we will seek approval or not but where we will seek it. When we look for it in the wrong place, the approval we find will never satiate our desire for acceptance. But when we realize nd truly believe that our drive to find approval is meant to be met and satisfied in the work of Jesus Christ on the cross, our endless search for the approval of man can end. We can see that Jesus fulfills every desire we have for approval by doing what we were powerless to do. Donna and I talk through some of the ways we wrongly seek approval and how we see in scripture that God is the only One who can offer sound and true approval of us. A leader sets the tone for the culture of a community. A leader models the ethos of a place and of a community. This could certainly be said of Dr. Donna Harris, president of Minnehaha Academy, a private K-12 Christian school in Minneapolis, Minnesota. On August 2, 2017, unexpected tragedy befell the over century-old school when an explosion leveled the middle portion of the Academy’s high school. In the midst of losing two beloved employees and the ensuing grief and uncertainty, Dr. Harris forged ahead in wisdom, fortitude, and faith. That same steadfast faith characterized my time with Dr. Harris. In our time together, she spoke of how to see beauty at work in the wake of tragedy and how a community can emerge from such an event with renewed vigor for loving one another well.
In this clip, Louise Harrison recalls the process of her landing a regular role in "The Bill". Not releasing on Soundcloud until next April, Sgt Patrons of the Podcast can enjoy this Podcast and much more content now on patreon.com/thebillpodcast
