Devin: What is your superpower?Michael: I have what we might say in Yiddish is intellectual shpilke. I have difficulty focusing on one issue. I like to think across boundaries.Michael Shuman, one of the real OGs of crowdfunding, has managed to elude an invitation to be a guest on my show for the past decade, but today we remedy that situation. He is an economist, attorney, author and entrepreneur who focuses on local community investing via crowdfunding. He publishes the Main Street Journal, which is also here on Substack. He noted a fundamental principle that guides his work—and mine—in the local investing community: “We're too few in number to be competitive. We've got to be as collaborative as possible.”Michael has a fascinating superpower, evidenced immediately in a one-sentence bio. He describes it as “intellectual shpilke” using a Yiddish term some describe as ants-in-your-pants. His education and practice include law, economics and entrepreneurship.AI Podcast Summary* Michael H. Shuman is an economist, attorney, author, and entrepreneur focused on community economics.* He played a significant role in the creation of the 2012 Jobs Act and various state laws on crowdfunding.* His passion for local investing stems from his own experience of struggling to raise capital for his businesses.* Michael believes that local businesses are crucial for economic development, job creation, and community success.* He emphasizes the need for a massive organizing movement to shift the investment ecosystem towards supporting local businesses.* Some strategies he suggests include creating groups that bring businesses and investors together, providing information on local businesses seeking capital, and promoting the use of funds for local investment.* Michael publishes the Main Street Journal, which highlights news and innovations in local investment.* His superpower is the ability to integrate various subjects and perspectives to explore bottom-line truths.* Michael encourages reading across boundaries, subscribing to different publications, and engaging in civil conversations with those who have different viewpoints.* To connect with Michael and learn more about his work, visit the Main Street Journal website, his personal blog, or his Twitter account. How to Develop Intellectual Shpilke As a SuperpowerMichael shared a story to illustrate his superpower:'So there is a storyline that I developed during the conversation about creating the Jobs Act that I think was very effective with skeptics. In securities laws, you have securities lawyers who are like twins because they speak to one another all the time early in their childhood. Their speech gets stunted, and they don't even realize it. And one of the things that securities lawyers babble to one another all the time is that we don't want Grandma to buy swampland in Florida, which is a totally reasonable argument. You don't want people to get defrauded. And that's why we have all of these securities laws, strictures to protect grandma from buying swamp land in Florida. What I started to point out to people, and this is back in the late 2000s when my mother was still alive, is that my mother being a grandmother living in Saint Louis, I don't want her to buy swamp land in Florida. But what did she do with her money and her time? She would go to one of a dozen casinos in Saint Louis. And when she entered the casino, she. Would she get a question? “Excuse me, Mrs. Shuman, but can you prove that you are an accredited gambler?” That never happened. And when she sat down to play blackjack, would they say, “Listen, before you enter this risky enterprise, will you please read this thick booklet of all of the risks of playing blackjack and sign?” And that never happened, either. So I pointed out to people that we have two risky activities going on in the US economy. One called gambling, where you could lose everything and probably will–independent of your income. And another called local investing and saving your community, where we're not going to let you play unless you pay a lawyer $25,000. Every human being except a seasoned securities lawyer can understand the logic of that. So, you know, you get people to laugh a little bit. And my mother was sort of amused by the story. But I feel like it's through laughter and through just poking holes with sort of folksy logic that you can move mountains. What a great example! His intellectual ants-in-the-pants helped him cross-pollinate ideas to create a compelling metaphor for legal change. With it, he helped to change federal securities laws.Michael has some simple advice to help you develop your intellectual shpilke, “To help, one of the things that I have my students do to develop a little bit of this is I have them do something that they never do anymore—most people our age would find this shocking—which is to subscribe to a newspaper or a magazine.”By following Michael's example and his advice, you can increase the intellectual ants in your pants to help you cross-pollinate ideas and potentially create a new superpower that enables you to do more good in the world. When co-founders and partners Matthew Herman and David Kien started developing Boy Smells, they weren't exactly sure they had a brand. In fact, Herman said the process of making candles in their living room in 2016 was a side hustle. Both Herman and Kien were working in fashion at the time; Herman was a designer at Nasty Gal and Kien worked in production at The Elder Statesman. "We didn't have a ton of high aspirations for the brand when we first started it because we really wanted it to be a recreational little side hustle. It was in years two and three that we really started to get serious. We left our jobs. We were running the entire business out of the living room, then it was the living room and kitchen, and then the living room, kitchen and sunroom. All of a sudden, there was inventory in the hallways," said Herman on the latest episode of the Glossy Beauty Podcast. While "genderful" Boy Smells launched at Sephora this month, it first launched into retail via independent stores like Boy George in Austin and now closed Barneys New York, positioning the line as for a fashion savvy person but sold at a more accessible price. Equally thoughtful is the brand's perspective on collaborations. After the runway success of Boy Smells' Slowburn candle with singer-songwriter Kacey Musgraves, it would have been easy for the team to take a rinse and repeat mentality to other partnerships. But Herman said whoever Boy Smells works with has to represent what Boy Smells is all about, which led the brand to its latest work with Grace Jones. In essence, Hermand said, "[We asked ourselves], 'If we could choose one person that represents our genderful values and who we are as a brand, who would we want to work with?' And we went after that person, who is not the person that the digital people who want to inform every decision about ... audience reach or whatever [would choose]. We went after the person that we really felt represented our brand values," said Herman.

MIKE FERGUSON IN THE MORNING 0:00 SEG 1 Gov. Scott Walker on remembering 9/11 21 years after. As the anniversary of 9/11 approaches, hundreds of high school and college students from around the country will be commemorating the lives lost during the attacks by participating in YAF's 9/11: Never Forget Project. Students will plant 2,977 American flags, and recognize a moment of silence. These students are taking the initiative to host this project, because without them, most schools would just have a normal school day––without honoring the tragic loss of life. The project has really taken on a life of its own over the years since YAF founded it in 2003––we've seen so many schools and communities host the display who don't even realize where it started! This year especially, most college students on campus were not even alive on 9/11––underscoring the importance of carrying on the memory. https://students.yaf.org/initiatives/911neverforget/  11:42 SEG 2 AUDIO: Ron DeSantis vs California (33 secs)Larry Elder says he's considering a run for president in 2024.- Who else would you like to see consider a run?The Elder Statesman? Charlie has interviewed Hamish Mackay many times for his Youtube channel and this interview is a poignant reminder that whilst the principles of regenerative agriculture, and specifically Biodynamics, remain the same, its application and adaption to landscapes and communities is ever changing and definitely on the rise. Hamish takes listeners for a ride into the world of Biodynamics, leaving us with very practical and compelling steps we can take to produce better food and improve the health of our planet. To start a dialogue and converse more about topics raised in this podcast, please visit The Regenerative Journey Podcast Facebook Group.   Episode Takeaways : Hamish grew up near Braidwood, NSW on a family sheep and cattle farm | Andrew his brother is his major mentor | Travelled Australia before going home to the farm and Alex Poloinsky visited the farm in 1972. Alex showed him his farm through different eyes | Alex made Hamish aware of his farm in a physical sense, made him aware of soil health | Hamish was also involved in the wool industry and worked at the famous Demeter Bakery in Glebe, Sydney | Change in the agriculture world is slowly happening and now building momentum | The practice of Biodynamics is very easy and is a form of environmental and food security when inevitably we meet challenges in the food production and environment health space | It will be important to have people in the world who are practicing Biodynamics to ensure food security as conventional practices continue to fail | 1960s was the start of change in the dairy industry in Australia | Currently there are many people in agriculture as a result of obligation to their family, rather than because it’s their destiny and are passionate about it | Spiritual science uses scientific methodology to investigate ‘things we can’t see’ | People are becoming more aware of value in organic produce both economically and nutritionally | We need to collaborate, not be competitive, in the regenerative agriculture world | Consumers are ultimately in the position to ‘judge’ the success or otherwise of regenerative farming practices | Regenerative farming is not prescriptive agriculture. That is one if its defining characteristic that sets it apart from industrial farming | The diaries of early white explorers identified that indigenous peoples managed the landscape as a ‘parkland’ like landscape | Bill Gammage in ‘The Biggest Estate on Earth’, Bruce Pascoe in ‘Dark Emu’ and Joseph Jenkins in ‘The Diary of a Welsh Swagman’ highlighted this phenomena | Our landscape is now a bit like teenagers going through puberty - its chaotic, and the recent Summer bushfires were a reflection of this | The Australian landscape was once managed, prior to white settlement. Now it’s being pillaged. It is ‘managing’ us. Again, the ferocity and complete disruption and destruction of bushfires reflects this | Biodynamic food and pasture is more mineral dense and therefore harder to digest and makes organs work harder (which keeps them healthier) In addition, one needs to eat less of it (and it is also harder to burn which makes it potentially more fire resistant) | Healthy humic aerated soil retains moisture and biology even in a drought | All mental illness has a physiological basis | Current industrial medical system treats symptom, not the cause | Nutritionally dense food impacts positively the social fabric of individuals, families and communities   Episode Links :  Hamish Mackay - Farming Secrets profile Hamish Mackay & Charlie Arnott | Biodynamics Workshops  - 2021 workshop dates will be announced soon. Pro Tip: When speaking about polarization with Newt Gingrich within seven days from a Presidential Election, prepare for a wild ride. Our thirty-five minutes together is all at once the shortest, most dense, and perhaps most consequential discussion we've had on this series. At 77, Newt is at once the storied Republican Warrior, fighting an existential threat where through this election, the fate of America hangs in the balance, and concurrently the softened Elder Statesman, calling conservatives to listen and seek common ground with the other side. In our short time, he offers his thoughts on the history of our divisions, systemic racism, and prescriptions for how businesses, media, and politicians can pull us out of our "cycle of cynicism and negativism." Newt’s comparison of today to the pre-Civil War Era where the prospect of war became inevitable, are concerning to say the least. As a historian and political practitioner, few have lived that have known more about the occupants of our Highest Office. We explore our contrasting expectations of Trump's behavior, George Washington's position on parties, and the secret to his success in collaborating with Bill Clinton. For extra credit, he regales us with a story about the time Richard Nixon gifted him a strategy that later resulted in the Republican Revolution, his position as House Speaker, and perhaps a clue that explains our union's current state. If it makes you feel better, we also talk about podcasts. "For the country's sake, it would be really helpful if starting in December or January, people could just listen to each other." It doesn't matter if you love or hate the man or his policy positions; this interview is an education.

John Lewis: Good Trouble Review

Giving John Lewis His Due John Lewis: Good Trouble, like The Pieces I Am did with Toni Morrison, explores the richness of the Elder Statesman's public life through archive footage and present day interviews. This is a look through his eyes at his days in the civil rights movement and beyond. It couldn't come at a better time.  "we are in a much better place. when I hear people say nothing has changed. I just want to say, come and walk in my shoes..."  In 2014, the National Center for Civil and Human Rights opened an exhibit focused on the life of John Lewis. It was the chronology of his life as a timeline of change in the United States. In the same vein, this documentary directed by Dawn Porter is about giving Lewis his flowers while he's still walking among us. But don't expect Porter to cross the line into his personal life.  In terms of a documentary storytelling, leaving the personal costs out unexplored makes for a bit of unevenness. There's plenty of humor, a few glimpses behind the veil, and definitely a broader contextual understanding for his continued optimism to be hand. However, very little - even in this non-linear narrative- that delves into the unknown or unexpected. This documentary raises as many questions as it answered when it comes to John Lewis. Focus on any less favorable events or periods in his life is few, far between and given very little screen time. Lewis has always carefully protected his home and family. So, it's unsurprising that Good Trouble's lens remains  focused squarely on his public life and persona.  It also silently demonstrates that when John Lewis doesn't wish to be moved, he won't be.  Which in a way, tells its own story.  A Legacy Still In The Making  In 2016, Lewis explained his decision to get involvement in the civil rights movement with, “I was inspired [by doctor King and Rosa Parks] to get in trouble. I was inspired to get in the way.”  So this film stands as a sharp highlight of what it means to get in "good trouble" and why John Lewis continues to answer the call...and why we as a community need to be ready to collectively get in the way as well.  Shortly before his assassination in 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. said: "Now our struggle is for genuine equality, which means economic equality. For we know that it's not enough to integrate lunch counters. What does it profit a man to be able to eat at an integrated lunch counter if he doesn't have enough money to buy a hamburger?"  As the progressive veneer many state's boast about shreds to nothingness, the severe lack of equity and continued socio-economic vulnerability of Black people in the United States is abundantly clear. John Lewis: Good Trouble is a reminder (or lesson for the unaware) that the steps that lead to change are always deliberate and and methodical. And the next steps to retaining and expanding our rights and protections must be as well.  John Lewis was more than a man who "marched with King" and Good Trouble does a more than fair job of bringing that fact into focus. It's also clear by the end that this man is far from done putting in work.  The Evolution of an Activist By examining Lewis' life and his choices, Porter brings new perspective to not only the path of a movement but the thoughts driving the man. Good Trouble humanizes Lewis in ways that'll send you in search of more information (this well is deep and there is mess), thoughtful about crafting further ways forward, and hopeful about recapturing the mindset that this is a battle for liberation.  This isn't the usual direction of a documentary nor is it the expected focus on a life lived.  Given the positive focus of the present day interviews, you'll came away with a potentially deeper understanding of why the man garners so much respect. And to the people Porter's truly aiming Good Trouble at, it's message will be clear. The archival footage and glimpses of Lewis with his chief of staff, Michael Collins,

Paid advertisement Paid advertisement As we age, people like to use that as an excuse for why they can’t lose weight or get their body into shape. After all, we all KNOW your metabolism slows down, your bones become brittle, you lose muscle, and it’s a hopeless situation to prevent obesity and declining health from happening as you enter the twilight years of life, right? But somebody forgot to tell that to my podcast interview guest today–Arthur DeVany. At the age of 71, he’s an inspiring athlete consuming a low-carb nutritional program he refers to as Evolutionary Fitness. In this episode of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore,” we hear from former economics professor and former professional minor league baseball player Arthur De Vany who tells us about how his wife’s diabetes drove him to the low-carbohydrate way of eating to control her insulin, why carbohydrates are driving obesity and disease, and how his Evolutionary Fitness program is helping people get their nutrition and fitness routine in order by getting back to the diet of our ancestors. He says the hunter/gatherer ideology is a model that we should all attempt to follow. This is one man you will LOVE to hear from in today’s interview.   Paid advertisement
