Here's why we love the 40 hour work week: Everything you do while you're on (or off) the clock for work is financially rewarded… right? Laughing. Out. Loud!! No matter if you're currently working full time or the last ”official” job you held was in high school (SAHMs we see you!!) we know that the effort you put forth at work each day is not always rewarded financially or at all (again, SAHMs, we see you!). If that's the reality of the world we live in, why do we use that approach with our kids when it comes to school and grades? Today we're doing a little call back to a past episode where we shared that we DON'T financially reward our kids for good grades and let us tell you - this was a hot topic! We're breaking down why we - and the research - believe that giving your kids money for “good” grades can be harmful, not only in their learning, but to their overall perception of worth at such a formative age. We'll cover how to approach good grades and broach the not so good ones too. We hope you enjoy this week's episode as we head into report card season! Jeff and Phil welcome Pawan Dhingra, associate provost and associate dean of the faculty at Amherst College and current president of the Association for Asian American Studies. He talks about the newly minted AAPI Studies program at Amherst -- the first of its kind for liberal arts colleges -- what's behind the seemingly sudden surge of interest in Asian American Studies, and how the field still needs to grow and expand. Pawan also talks a bit about Kumon, the South Asian stranglehold on the spelling bee, and his incredibly titled book Hyper Education: Why Good Schools, Good Grades, and Good Behavior Are Not Enough.

Dr. Ai spent 15 years as a college professor before quitting to establish Classroom Without Walls, an organization committed to helping teenagers and young adults develop needed skills to become career-ready, life-ready, and achieve a high level of success, whether they have good grades or not. In today's episode, Dr. Ai joins Jonaed Iqbal to analyze the issues plaguing the education system, including its stifling effects on innovation, how grades and exams negatively impact students and the reluctance of educational institutions to evolve. Listen in to find out how a student's purpose and personal connection to learning fosters motivation and the importance of parental roles in education.Timestamps (00:00) — Introduction to podcast(01:18) — Introduction to Dr. Ai | Journey from academia to education reform(06:11) — GPA, perfectionism, and innovation (07:07) — Steps taken towards disrupting the learning status quo (08:47) — The breaking point; leaving academia foster a disruptive cause(11:24) — Why 'Classroom Without Walls'?(14:32) — Approach to learning at "Classroom Without Walls"(17:55) — Key point to gaining motivation to learn; discovering the "why"(22:31) — Lessons learned from starting a business and approaching learning differently(25:19) — The importance of diverse paths to success and different career interests(27:45) — The lack of urgency for change in traditional education and its consequences(30:08) — The role of parents in traditional education and exploring different educational options(32:14) — Follow and support Dr. Ai's work Key Points - Dr. Ai left academia to address its shortcomings, such as the lack of intellectual spark in students who are conditioned to study only for exams, by starting Classroom Without Walls to foster genuine learning. - Dr. Ai emphasizes that learning should be connected to personal interests and purposes, and that having clarity on one's values, strengths, and purposes can transform unmotivated students into passionate learners. - The traditional education system is being forced to change due to external pressures from alternative educational pathways, industry certifications, and a decrease in university enrollments, highlighting the importance of diverse approaches to success beyond just obtaining a college degree. - The traditional education system often focuses on grades and exams, which can hinder students' love for learning and innovation. - Motivation is driven by purpose and personal connection to learning, rather than external factors like grades. - Starting a business requires investing in mentors and coaches who can provide guidance and support. - Schools need to adapt to alternative forms of education and embrace the diversity of paths to success. Michelle knew something was wrong. That she was "different." At times she could not distinguish reality from her troubled thoughts. She begged her parents to bring her to a professional to get help. But they were afraid a diagnosis of mental illness would prevent her from getting into a good college or from "finding a husband." So, because of stigma, ignorance and fear, Michelle suffered. While paying kids to improve their grades can result in better studying habits and improved scores, it may not effectively encourage them to engage with school. Studies have shown that rewards incentivize students to do the minimum necessary to receive their prize, after which point they lose interest. This doesn't mean you shouldn't give incentive programs a try however. But there are some things you may want to consider. If you're considering paying your kids for their school work, make sure all of your kids understand what they can each do to earn their rewards. In this episode I interview Liz Bayardelle author of Clean Your Plate! 13 Things that Good Parents Say that Ruin Kids' Lives. This book covers all sorts of unintended consequences that good parents say regularly like Get Straight As, Don't Hit, Sit Still, Don't Be a Quitter and many more. She goes into detail in all these areas and has wonderful ideas about how to combat our natural tendencies to push our kids in ways that might backfire. We talk specifically about the impact of parents choosing to say GET STRAIGHT A'S often sends our kids looking for extrinsic motivators like money, extra computer time or other external rewards. These rewards often work in the short run but can put a damper on intrinsic motivators that allow our children to own their own success. In order for our kids to have their own internal motivations there are four key factors:Autonomy - this is where they "own" the ideas, doing things because they're invested in them and not doing them for other peopleCompetence - that kids believe they are capable of a skillRelatedness - kids are social and if they can see how what they are doing relates to other people they want to be with or emulate they can motivate themselves to push past the work at handPurpose - the task at hand relates to some other passion or goal they are trying to achieveBy encouraging a GROWTH MINDSET we can move away from nurturing kids who aren't fulfilling their potential to growing kids who WANT to achieve goals and move forward. Get a copy of Liz's book here!CLEAN YOUR PLATE! 13 Things Good Parents Say That Ruin Kids' LivesAs always, email Mary at mary@parentingdecoded.com or join her Facebook Group: Parenting Decoded 2021 to hear from Mary more.
